1961 Catalina Sport Sedan 4-speed, ordered with the Police Group Package. This is a great example of how back in the day, if you were persistent, you could order a car exactly the way you wanted it. From an article in Smoke Signals not too long ago, here's the story.
A doctor in Eugene, OR placed an order for a 1961 Catalina Sport Sedan, the lightest of the Catalina body styles, and requested specific heavy duty equipment. The car arrived at the dealership, but not what the doctor ordered, so he rejected the car. The dealer then placed an order for a 1961 Catalina Sport Sedan with Option 788 (Police Group). Normally it was a against policy to provide a police car to non-law enforcement, but the order was processed. What makes this most unusual is that the car wasn't built with the standard police car 389 engine, it was built with the 389/333hp 4-bbl known as the 425A (425 referred to the torque output) and a 4-speed transmission.
Standard equipment in Option 788 (Police Group) included:
• Heavy duty brakes with front finned aluminum brake drums
• Heavy-duty cooling with fan shroud
• Heavy-duty frame
• Wiring for rooftop flasher light and extra roof bow
• Heavy-duty steering
• Heavy-duty shocks and springs
• 15-inch reinforced steel wheels
• Heavy-duty seat springs and foam cushions, reinforced seat backs
Back in 1964, the doctor replaced the 4-bbl intake and carb with a tri-power unit. Records show just 123 Pontiacs were equipped with the 389/333hp and a manual transmission, and being this is a rare 2-door Sport Sedan model, just a handful were made.
These "non-law enforcement" police car Pontiacs are quite rare.
