First Tiaras for Spanish Royals

Princess Leonor turns 18 on Tuesday and I feel pretty confident in saying that her first tiara will be the Princess Victoria Louise's Prussian Diamond Tiara because it’s used as a starter tiara within the family. For example...

Queen Sofia, back when she was Princess Sophia of Greece, started wearing tiaras a little before her 18th birthday in November 1956. (Joining Princess Anne in proving that these are not the strict rules people in the fandom think they are.) The picture on the left is from the Greek state visit to France in June 1956 and the one on the right is labelled as her debutante ball. I don't know if that's accurate and I can't find a date for when her debutante ball would have been but she looks to be about the same age.

Infanta Elena turned 18 in December 1981 but the first dated pictures I’ve found of her wearing a tiara are from the Swedish state visit in March 1983. It’s possible that she wore Queen Maria Christina’s Diamond Floral Tiara before that because she also wore it often when she was young.

Infanta Cristina turned 18 in June 1983 and the earliest pictures with dates that I've found are from the state visit from Nepal in September 1983.

Queen Letizia's first tiara was on her wedding day in May 2004. The Prussian Diamond Tiara was her primary tiara starting out but like the other royal women she moved on to other pieces.

Princess Leonor can choose whichever tiara she wants for her first one but the Prussian Diamond Tiara seems most likely. I have a post coming tomorrow with some more possibilities. Even though she probably won't wear a tiara for awhile yet, it's still fun to think about!

GODPARENTS OF NICHOLAS II

Born during his grandfather's reign on 18 May (New Style) 1868 at the Alexander Palace, Tsarkoe Selo in Saint Petersburg. He was the eldest son of Alexander III and his wife Maria Feodorovna (then, the Tsarevich and Tsarina of Russia). He was christened on 1 June at the Chapel of the Resurrection of the Catherine Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, by the confessor of the imperial family, protopresbyter Vasily Borisovich Bazhanov. His godparents were:

ALEXANDER II, EMPEROR OF RUSSIA - his paternal grandfather, the Russian Emperor stood as one of the godparents. He became the Emperor of All Russia in 1855. Alexander’s most significant reform as emperor was the emancipation of Russia’s serfs in 1861, for which he is known as Alexander the Liberator. He was assassinated in 1881 when the young Nicholas was only 12 years-old, to which he became the heir apparent upon his death.

PRINCESS MARIE OF HESSE AND BY RHINE, EMPRESS MARIA ALEXANDROVNA OF RUSSIA - his paternal grandmother, the consort of Emperor Alexander II, was another of his godparents. Known for her intellect, she was one of the founders of the Russian Red Cross Society. However, she suffered from tuberculosis from 1863 and spent long stays in southern Europe to avoid harsh winters. Although she and her husband were unofficially separated sometime after the death of their eldest son, Maria was treated with respect and love by her surviving family. Maria passed away from illness when the young Nicholas was still a child.

PRINCESS LOUISE OF HESSE-KASSEL, QUEEN CONSORT OF DENMARK - his maternal grandmother was listed as one of his godparents. Louise became the Queen consort of Denmark upon her husband's - King Christian IX - accession in 1863, just few years before her grandson Nicholas' birth. She, herself, was a niece of another King of Denmark (Christian VIII). The great dynastic success of Louise's six children was to a great extent a result of Louise's own ambitions - through them, she was a grandmother of not only the future Tsar of Russia (Nicholas II), but also that of King George V of the United Kingdom; King Constantine I of Greece; King Christian X of Denmark, and King Harken VII of Norway.

GRAND DUCHESS ELENA PAVLOVNA OF RUSSIA - his great-great-aunt, the wife of the late Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, was one of his godparents. Born as Princess Charlotte of Württemberg, she became a close friend of his grandmother the Empress Maria Alexandrovna, and was known as an intellectual. She was also considered the most exceptional woman in the imperial family since Catherine the Great.

KING FREDERICK VIII OF DENMARK - then, the Crown Prince, his maternal uncle stood as one of his godparents. During the long reign of his father, he was largely excluded from influence and political power. Upon his father's death in 1906, he acceded to the throne at the advanced age of 62. In many ways, Frederick VIII was a liberal monarch who was much more favorable to the new parliamentary system introduced in 1901 than his father had been, being reform-minded and democratically inclined.

Day 14 - Favorite Emerald Tiara

Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, Emerald setting

Made for Grand Duchess Vladimir of Russia, this tiara was sold by her daughter, Grand Duchess Elena Vladimiranova of Greece (Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent's mother) to Queen Mary in 1921. Inherited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, the tiara has been worn with its original pearl drops, without drop stones, and with the pendant emeralds.

Three years after Queen Mary purchased the tiara, she commissioned Garrard to work on the piece. Mary’s collection included the Cambridge emeralds, a cache of gems that had belonged to her mother’s family. She had incorporated many of the stones into the Delhi Durbar Parure, and in 1924, she had the Vladimir Tiara adapted so that it could be worn in a third setting, with a series of fifteen cabochon drops from the Cambridge emerald collection. From then on, the emerald version of the tiara was often worn with pieces from the Delhi Durbar suite.

As per usual the BRF put on a shambolic display of precedence at Constantine's Service of Thanksgiving 🤡

First let me start out by requesting an answer as to how the FUCK Sarah Ferguson and her nonceband take precedence over A REIGNING KING AND QUEEN?

As much as I enjoy seeing my girl Lady Sarah Chatto take precedence over the play pretend royals that are Pavlos and MC's children, can you even imagine how slighted the BRF – let alone their stans – would've been if the tables were turned and Princess Alexandra of Greece and Nicolas Mirzayantz took precedence over Charles and Camilla?

On to the seating:

How exactly do you have Andrew (a non(ce)-working royal 🤡) take precedence over the Duke of Kent (a working royal)? 🫠 Honest to god, looking at the BRF front row, it looks like he ACTIVELY snatched Edward's seat because it makes zero sense for him to be seated behind the Gloucesters but ahead of the Kents 🙃

This is also just to say: Make no mistake, the next time Harry attends a BRF function and is seated five rows down "because hEs nOt a wORkiNG rOyAL DUH", remember how these weirdos are clearly more willing to let a sexual predator back in the fold than a man addressing the racism his wife endures 🫶

And then we return to Sarah, live-in (non-royal) divorcee – the only one of her kind that apaz assumes the precedence of her (royal) child at an official function – let alone takes precedence over her 🤡 Are we supposed to take this as a sign she and the Duke of Nonce have remarried? Princess Alexandra of Greece (second cousin) and Alexander of Yugoslavia (first cousin once removed) take precedence over Elena, Cristina, Gustav and Alexandra (nieces and nephew) – but somehow not over Felipe and Letizia (thereby honouring Felipe's position as reigning monarch – a position that would since be shat on by Lord 4th on I'm a Celeb 2022) who take precedence over JC and Benedikte (brother- and sister-in-law). Queen Noor (unrelated 🤪) takes precedence over both Gustav and Alexandra (nephew and niece)... but NOT over Elena and Cristina (nieces).

And don't even get me started on the precedence somehow afforded to Chantal Miller... 🤡
