there's this biology teacher i know who's the most terrifying man on earth. the best way i could describe him to someone doesn't know him is this: if i didn't know better, i would've assumed that he deliberately modelled his entire personality after manfred von karma (down to the finger snaps and setting "time goals" and getting mad and blaming others when they "delay" him. seriously.) but he's too old and doesn't play videogames.

anyway we'd be so terrified by him that several students dropped out just so they don't have to make eye contact with him (you'll say we were imagining it out of fear, but seriously his eyes looked like a snake's.)

he didn't do anything in particular to frighten us. like he wouldn't threaten us or anything. it's literally just his presence that would freeze us with fear. those of us who had older siblings who'd already gone through him (like i did) know that they were still terrified even at the mention of him, even after they graduated. he's kind of like a celebrity that way.

one time i got to class early and he was there and it was just him and me and i could've passed out from dread but he'd already seen me and it would've been infinitely more awkward if i immediately turned around and walked away after seeing him.

he beckoned me over. oh god. this is it. i'm going to die today, i thought.

then he said "do you like dalida?"

i said yes. he said, "I thought so. you look like someone who appreciates dalida. not enough people do these days."

i was still deer in headlights but the other students came in and class proceeded as normal, only that occasionally he'd do a little "hello there" gesture at me after that day. whenever that happened my classmates would look at me as if i'd used forbidden magic to make him friendly. but no, it was just a common love for dalida.

i got sentimental about this contender for top 3 weirdest interactions i've ever had in my life because i recently heard that he got diagnosed with lung cancer 😔

what you’ve got to understand about working conditions in education (and also other care-oriented careers) is that if they’re shit, two things are true at once:

that does not ever excuse being cruel to a kid, no matter what

until those conditions are fixed, education will continue to suck absolute shit

this is because when working conditions for teachers are really bad, many of the good teachers who recognize when they are reaching a point where they can no longer be the sort of teacher the kids deserve due to burnout WILL quit. they will do the responsible thing and go away for their own sake and the sake of the kids. and you end up stuck w a combination of new teachers who are trying their best but won’t last long, burnt out teachers who are trying their best but have nothing left to give and therefore aren’t very effective at actually teaching, and cockroach shitheads who take out their misery on the kids.

we have all had terrible experiences with bad teachers, many of them flat out traumatic, but for fuck’s sake please try to look at the systemic underpinnings of the problem for one minute. spitefully declaring that teachers don’t deserve good working conditions or even the right to complain about bad working conditions because ms. whoever in 5th grade was a bitch is only going to create more of her. if you want good teachers then we need an education system they can survive in

I thought my housemates were pretty nice until one of them told me that what I’m studying in Uni which is teaching (he knows because we always introduce ourselves by asking where we’re from and what we’re doing etc) is useless unless I plan to become a mother and have children…. And I told him that I don’t want to have children and become a mother and he was like “but that’s your priority as a woman” and I’m so appalled that I had to explain to him that teacher ≠ mother and that I have my right and my own choice to decide then this mf said “then you’re not a woman, you’re a man” as if I was offended by that…. like be fucking for real, come up with a sensible explanation then
