Leslie Howard, Gertrude Lawrence, and Reginald Owen in Candle Light. The play, from a book by Siegfried Geyer adapted by P.G. Wodehouse, opened at the Empire Theater on September 30, 1929, and ran for 128 performances.
Reginald Owen has the distinction of having played both Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in film. He played Watson in 1932 in SHERLOCK HOLMES with Clive Brook as Sherlock Holmes, and he played Sherlock Holmes in 1933 in A STUDY IN SCARLET with Warburton Gamble as Watson.
By sheer coincidence, three of the most essential versions of A Christmas Carol have connections to Mary Poppins.
Reginald Owen, the Scrooge of the 1938 version, played Admiral Boom in Mary Poppins, while the 1951 Alastair Sim version features Hermione Baddeley, who played the Banks's housekeeper Ellen, as Mrs. Cratchit, and Mervyn Johns, father of Glynis Johns (Mrs. Banks), as her husband Bob.
And then David Warner, who played Bob Cratchit in the 1984 Christmas Carol with George C. Scott, replaced the long-deceased Owen as Admiral Boom in Mary Poppins Returns.
