St Lucia, nyår och dagarna kring

Den 29/12 gick flyget strax efter lunch mot St Lucia via Barbados.

Du milde. Att jag så ofta skall få problem med mitt bagage när jag flyger!

Nåja. För att göra en lång historia kort: bagaget kom fram dagen efter och alla mankemang kopplade till detta (laddare, körkort, Mastercard, et.c.) ordnade upp sig. Senare samma dag mötte jag upp familjen Dorninger och vi åkte upp till Rodney Bay för att njuta och fira nyår! Mycket god mat, trevliga stränder och lite kontakt med ARC-kontoret för att hitta nästa skjuts norröver hanns med under dessa dagar, utöver en massa trevlig social tid! På nyårsafton åt vi först en riktigt god middag ute på Pigeon Island innan vi begav oss ned till stranden och betraktade nyårsfyrverkerierna som fyrades av på de olika stränderna runt Rodney Bay. En upplevelse minsann! Inte minst att fira nyår i badbyxor och kortärmat!

Den 2/1 åkte vi söderut med bil mot Soufriere för några dagar. En liten, vacker och mysig stad, med en massa trevligheter i närheten! Vi började med några dagar och middagar på stränderna i närheten. Men där finns mer att upptäcka: Grand och Petit Piton, zipline-färder, djungelturer, lerbad i varma vulkankällor, mineralvattensbad från varma vulkankällor, chokladtillverkning, et.c.. Allt hanns inte med men lerbad, mineralvattensbad, chokladtillverkning och en kortare hike upp på en av höjderna mellan Pitonerna blev det. Allt var välordnat och vi hade väldig tur med vädret då det sällan regnat så mycket under januari som just under dessa dagar. Chokladtillverkningen med tillhörande sticklingsodling och fabriksvandring var klart intressant!

Vi avslutade Soufrierevistelsen med en natt på ett makalöst vackert beläget hotell uppe på ett berg alldeles söder om Soufriere, Crystals Villa Hotell! Dessvärre drabbades området av tropiska regnskurar och stormbyar under natten så det blev sisådär med sömnen för sällskapet. Men trevligt hade vi ändå.

Dorningers lämnade slutligen av mig i Castries för att påbörja sin hemresa via Martinique. Själv ville jag vara kvar för några dagars båtletande på St Lucia, både digitalt men också med ett kort besök i Rodney Bay igen.

Imorgon den 8/1 blir det färja till Martinique för ytterligare båtletande men också turistande. Kanske lite mer surfande också...

OW, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, OW

So I'm in the middle of rewatching "Grace Under Pressure" for the first time since maaaybe? university? many years ago and I'm losing it because I fully forgot that one of the reasons this episode is so beloved is not only because it's Rodney all alone with a head injury, it's also Rodney trying to convince himself that anyone cares enough about him to try and save him.

Meanwhile: EVERYONE IS TRYING TO SAVE HIM.

ESPECIALLY JOHN SHEPPARD.

CARTER: Look, I hear what you're saying and I'm telling you -- you're wrong. You have some very smart, very motivated people on the surface, and the only thing any of them are working on right now is rescuing you. McKAY: Oh, come on! They are planning my memorial service. CARTER: If your plan fails -- and it probably will -- you could jeopardise their plans. [GateWorld - "Grace Under Pressure" Transcript]

I completely forgot the whole Atlantis portion of the episode over the years and basically only retained how incredible of an actor David Hewlett was in it.

MEANWHILE! John is all, "I will absolutely order that scientist to risk his life to save my scientist, and I will pretend I have any authority to do so because my scientist is in danger and I am prepared to make all kinds of unethical decisions for his sake," and now I'm ensconced in all the mcshep feelings of my past.

SHEPPARD: Well, Doctors Moore and McNab are here to study the ocean on M8R-1229, which happens to be under a thick sheet of ice, so they brought a thousand-foot cable and a pretty powerful winch to lower their instruments. WEIR: OK. SHEPPARD (gesturing to a nearby scientist): And Edgar over here is responsible for the magnetic grapple designed to lower the F-302s into our Jumper Bay. WEIR: And you intend to put the two together. SHEPPARD: Like chocolate and peanut butter.

It's absurdly emotion-fueling that John's really not a social person, but look at him assembling his own li'l team of people to go save his shouty nerd boyfriend. :')

McKAY: Well, we'll never be able to stop it. CARTER: I'm not saying that we could -- we're just trying to buy time here. McKAY: In order to make death as long and as drawn-out as possible, huh?! CARTER: Just max it out, McKay.

Underwater cameras have captured a unique dolphin behavior off the coast of Western Australia in what scientists suspect is a world-first. For decades now, bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) and local crabbers in the Bunbury area, roughly 160 kilometers south of Perth, have been locked in a battle over bait. When a crab pot is dropped in Koombana Bay, the local dolphins swoop in to snag the dead fish, usually before any pincered arthropods can come crawling along. When wildlife conservationist Rodney Peterson heard of the problem, he feared for the dolphins' safety, given the risks of net entanglement. Peterson approached the Dolphin Discovery Center in Bunbury – a non-profit organization that funds education, research, and ecotourism projects – about the possibility of filming the thieves in action.

i left the pizza biz a few months ago (i believe april), and man, i'm so glad to be out. i found a car wash job for a couple of dealerships, so i don't even have to deal with customers!!! dealer techs bring the cars to us, we wash them, then bring them back to the service advisors and never have to deal with customers. the most interaction i've had with customers is them asking "oh where is the used car section?", "where is x dealership?" or, "which way do i pull into the service bay?" all simple questions that require 10 seconds of conversation. i haven't been yelled at in months by anyone. pay is better, hours are better, an hour break in the day, and weekly pay! the only downside to this job is that it gets hot as FUCK outside and some of my coworkers are absolute idiots. but i can deal with both of these things if it means i get to be happy. this goes out to anyone who thinks they're stuck, that you aren't! there is always a better job out there, and you should 100% quit (if you can) to get something better. you deserve better!!!!

When I get the notification that Rodney's carpool is coming, I let him do what he obviously wants to.

In addition to Rodney hating his job, he and Calvin have almost no overlapping time during the day, and he's still working a full 5 days a week. The Business career doesn't reduce hours as you advance at the same rate the other careers do.

This is probably not the best choice for the family finances, but it's definitely the best for their quality of life. And, heck, Rodney brought §5000 with him, and that's more money than the Riffins have seen in one place since their parents died.

I might be wrong about Chantrelle and Rodney being in conflict. Despite their differing opinions on technology, they're both introverts who like cerebral hobbies. As soon as she got up from the breakfast table, Chantrelle rolled this wish.

So that's the first thing to do with our newfound savings! Buy a chess board!

The Barnacle Bay chess board isn't terrible thematic for these guys, but it's cheap and charming.

📝❤️&❓- which characters of yours are your favorites to write?

📝 what stages are you currently in your WIPs?

Which one I'm actively working on varies wildly - I've actually been mostly working on kiss scenes (which I'm about 80% done with) and that quasi-canonical Sheri story (which I'm about 25% done with) - but for my 4 main wips:

TFA: trying to dig into Anni and Zel's dynamic and figure out how to tie together Anni and Dez's separate trajectories, thematically or otherwise. They spend a lot of the story in two different places doing two different things. Because of shifting things around I'm not sure how much actually will stay in this draft but let's say I've written like 20% of a full draft.

Triad: haven't actually worked on this one in a while, and I will be starting a new draft when I get back to it. I've been replotting it to make the plot align more with non-romance goals such as stealing birds and also give us more time with Keearo's family.

AOM: like TFA, suffering from "what do you mean I have to write the middle", though to be fair I also haven't been motivated to write most of the beginning stuff in Ensaum because I need a better hook for myself than Colin & Sid's weird doomed romance. The next thing to do is flesh out the dynamics that will be present on Phil's boat when Horatio, Sid, Sorian, and Avis all join her for the trip to Imni. It's not pretty.

Nicea: extremely fragmentary and coming together as I think of more things. Next on my loose list is to write Isabel saying goodbye to Darnell (has Darnell actually gotten married? is he pregnant again? I have many questions) and maybe get back to the sex scene between her and Tatya. I also need to orchestrate a meltdown for Declan and write Spinder working with the engineering bay gear.

❤️ what are your favorite scenes from your WIPs?

AOM: Avis unintentionally making Sorian choke on his water because she needed to be mean Right Now. Also Horatio talking about funerals over toast like it's the most normal thing in the world. Sid's face off against his parents and also his sexy scenes with Colin. Emma fucking tearing into Donovan about the letters the second he comes in the door.

Nicea: Fabian and his vibrator necklace. The scene where Tristan accidentally breaks the gravity. Tatya's introduction. Rodney's adventure to find the keys to Declan's storage unit, mostly because Martin and Kara are my favorites forever. Also probably any scene where someone is having a chat with Tatya. Cady and Declan's various reunion scenes.

TFA: one that hasn't made it into the current draft where Dez is sitting under the stars with Nidilaenn and Ellery and tries rooting for the first time. Vinnek's introduction. Dez getting in trouble for saying bad words at the library. Anni and Zel chatting on the train. Another scene that may or may not happen in the current draft but I feel like it should - Dez talking to Hoven one on one for the first time over translation work. Anni talking books with Mel. Anni making it through customs with Dez in a suitcase (this one might be my most favorite actually).

❓which characters of yours are your favorites to write? This is such a fun one. A few that I particularly enjoy writing:

Avis. I just Get her voice. It helps that she's opinionated as hell

Syndy. Same deal as Avis but also android. Actually all of the androids are so fun to write

Tirias. My baby. Mx. Women Are My Favorite Guy but she's both the women and the guy. Just so full of sass and drama and in love with the world

Rolf and also Snap. They're just my goofy sexy lil guys

Bean. He's one of those magical children's book guides like Mary Poppins except he's just a regular human middle school teacher (this is part of his magic) and also transmasc (for Red at least this is also part of his magic)

Julian. He's not easy to write exactly but I just really like him and think he's interesting. He is the most guy forever

Leon and Edith. They're so full of life, laughter, and sarcasm and they play off of each other so well

Martin and Kara. Like Leon and Edith except more understated. Martin is always leaning against something amicably and Kara is always doing something and they're very in love your honor

Isabel. She's not quite as easy to write as Avis even though they have some of the same vibes, however, I feel like I did myself such a disservice not writing from her perspective in Old Canon. Also she curses a lot and it kinda seems like the more curses the more fun it is

Graham. The way he speaks is directly based off Bill and Ted. The kind of person who would say "women are my favorite guy" and take a refined sip from his space Red Bull

Hi! Before we continue the story, I just want to announce/clear up/declare/whatever one thing lol.

For those who are easily confused/bored by my storytelling woes, skip to Here is what I’ve done. The first two paragraphs should be enough to sum up the changes. But if you ask questions later, I will not hesitate to defer to this post. 😜

You storytellers out there know the deal. Aging, sim time, distance, oh my! I solved the aging problem, and sim time is whatever I say it is LOL. Distance, however, has been a thorn in my side. My collab with @ladybugsimblr​ forced me to create distance between the San Myshuno metropolitan area and “the west coast” which is Del Sol Valley and Strangerville. Oasis Springs should be on the west coast as well, but I struggled to make the separation because it has been such a frequently visited world throughout the entirety of the story. I just couldn’t take all that stuff away from my sims and make it a plane ride away. And some of the sims who live there, like Rodney, are supposed to be local (local meaning wherever the main character lives). But pretending like Oasis Springs is on the “east coast” is bonkers lol! That has never set well with me, and I’m sure it confused you guys too. 

Here is what I’ve done. 

I shuffled households and lots between worlds in a way that make the most sense. Oasis Springs is now officially on the “west coast” in between DSV and Strangerville, and Melanick will hangout there when they move. I have made over that whole world, so it shouldn’t look the same. Well...those two houses we went to are still there, but all the non-residential lots are different.

Rodney, his mother, and SolCaf are now in Willow Creek. The taqueria and other places from Oasis Springs (like Melanick’s first date cafe) are now in Newcrest.

I can’t change what’s happened in the past, so these changes are NOT retroactive. But everyone’s memories will be altered lol. If a character recalls a moment/event that took place in Oasis Springs, they will more than likely remember it happening in different world.

I don’t remember who made this map, but it was NOT me. There is a similar map I liked a lot, but San Myshuno, Willow Creek, and Newcrest weren’t as close as I make them out to be in the story, so this one works better for me although there are things I don’t like about it as well. (Thanks @tabbyrhsims4simblr​ for bringing that map back to mind and sparking all this madness LOL)

The area in red is the aforementioned San Myshuno metropolitan area. I live in the Atlanta metropolitan area, and I see San Myshuno just like that with Willow Creek, Newcrest, and now Evergreen Harbor as its suburbs. Brindleton Bay claims to be included in the area, but everyone says nah fam you don’t even share a border lol. 

Minutes are by car, and hours are by plane. I’ve never viewed my corner of the multiverse as being massive, so plane rides are no more than 6-8 hours. 

Because my universe is small, I see Sulani located more where Jamaica is than Hawaii. That makes sense for the story too seeing as the Piersons get there and back pretty quickly.

Forgotten Hollow doesn’t really exist in this world and is more like an urban legend because I use it for my own purposes. My photo studio and “retirement homes” are there lol. That’s why it’s ex’d out.

I don’t have High School Years yet, but from looking at everyone’s pics, I imagine Copperdale would be in between Brindleton Bay and Henford (which would be somewhere where Forgotten Hollow is, I imagine). Or maybe in between Henford and Britechester? What do you guys think? And has anyone seen an updated map yet??

Sheppard's face when Ford's sister asks him if Ford's trust in Sheppard is misplaced makes me sad. Sheppard is asking himself that same question: are his people safe with him or will he get them killed? Can they trust him?

I love Rodney's courage in this episode every step of the way. I love Elizabeth backing Sheppard, claiming him, encouraging her misfits. That moment when they have to beam Sheppard back onto the Deadalus, Elizabeth pats Rodney on the back and smiles at Sheppard. Scientists and Generals may not want them, but she does.

I adore the moment Sheppard and Rodney go to the 302 bay because up to now Rodney's been doing his thing, Sheppard's been doing his thing, but now the buddies are together to take this thing out!

Caldwell, at the start, says something along the lines that no one is saying Sheppard doesn't show remarkable courage and ingenuity, but he's only a major. Lieutenant Colonel Sheppard's courage and ingenuity saves everyone.

So, the answer to the question, can we trust Sheppard with our lives is yes, yes we can. But, he's only a man. A good man, but only a man.

I'm watching "Enemy at the Gate", am about halfway through, and hold these truths to be self-evident:

1. Everyone is so damn hot in this episode. Did y'all have a spa day beforehand? Jesus Christ. I don't know where to look first, give a girl a break!

2. Todd is just magnificent. The sass! The snark! Best antagonist ever.

3. John threatening Todd is hot. John threatening anyone is hot.

4. I will be forever angry that this is the final episode. Just one more season to wrap it all up would have been amazing. And hearing from Joe Flanigan in last week's podcast how SGA was raking in NINE FIGURES a year in profits and MGM were being morons, it hurts even more. Killed by greed and stupidity. They had solid gold on their hands, the equivalent of five fully powered ZPMs, and they blew them up in the parking lot. I'll never forgive them.

5. Here's where my superpower comes in: my ability to ignore things I don't like. So this is just another season finale, because the last thing this beautiful jewel of a city needs is to end up blocking San Francisco Bay like the Ever Given blocked the Suez Canal.

My headcanon is gonna give everyone two weeks shore leave until they get sick of Starbucks and traffic jams. Rodney can dump Jennifer - sorry girl, but you trying to change him isn't endearing. Then he goes up to his sister's house only to see that a certain Air Force Colonel got there first. And the guest bedroom has Only One Bed™️. Heh. They fly Atlantis back to the Pegasus Galaxy. Make it an Ocean's 11 type of heist, only we're stealing a city. Let's declare independence while we're at it. And off to many more adventures!

And now, there is only one thing left for me to do. Well, three actually. Read the novels. Watch the DVD extras and episode commentaries. And, of course, start again.

At least a couple people seemed to enjoy my fic rec post last week, so...gonna heap some more on the pile!

1) Teenage Kicks by Rheanna | ~26k, rated E It's not about changing the past. It's about letting the past change you.

(Further explication of the "underage" warning on AO3: John and Rodney are their canon selves re-experiencing part of their lives when they're around 16.) (Additional warning to my future self when I inevitably go to re-read this one having forgotten what happens in it: mom death, but the fic is worth it)

Oof, this one had me nearly crying. The helplessness, the intensity of feelings, the way that John and Rodney turn to each other for support...oooh it's all so real and crushing and perfect. I feel like a lot of what I could say will give away the central conceit of the fic, which is a gut-punch in the best way, so I'll just say...it's good, it's very very good.

2) In a room, alone by commatme | ~2k, rated E It’s just that sometimes, when they’re in a room alone (John’s, Rodney’s, the science lab, the jumper bay that one time right up against jumper 9), John will get down on his knees and unzip Rodney’s pants and pull him out of his underwear and swallow him down until Rodney comes hard and bitter and gasping down John’s throat.

My favorite trope rears its head again: pining for someone whilst having a sexual relationship with them. John's POV in this is so beautiful and painful, the way he's both greedy and self-denying, and Rodney invoking the concept of peer review in order to segue into reciprocation is, just, gloriously nerdy and perfect for them. Ambiguous ending but in my head they work it out and get married and live happily ever after!!!

3) Something More by seperis | \~14k, rated E He's out of practice with dealing with John, and it shows.

For unknown (to Rodney) reasons, John left Atlantis three years ago and hasn’t been seen since. Rodney tracks him down to a secluded beach house in Mexico and tries to get him to come back. What I really love about this one is how it unfolds, slowly but surely and you get these glimpses of where the time apart has taken both of them, and then it hits this absolutely perfect emotional crescendo once you’re all wound up, and, yes. Good stuff.

Minor note: if, like me, you are finicky about formatting, you may want to give up when encountering the use of asterisks instead of italics, and I say to you: keep going, it is worth it.

4) Euler's Jewel. by Basingstoke | ~1k, rated M In which John is a geek.

Oh, this just delighted me. I like John being smart, I like Rodney liking John being smart. Sweet like the cookies they share at the end of it :3

5) Frequently Wrong But Never In Doubt by busaikko | ~4k words, rated E Rodney's in Vancouver attending his nephew's birth, when he gets a late-night visitor.

There’s always something kind of interesting about fics where John and Rodney get together on earth. It’s like they have to be stripped of their usual context in order to really notice that what they’re feeling is that deep, that enduring? Going into this I thought I was in for a nice little PWP which, it kind of is, but the way it deals with John’s reaction to getting the thing he wants is really visceral and beautiful, and it just takes the fic to the next level in a really nice way.

Person who just delivered a parcel to the charity shop I work in: I just got a ticket for parking in loading only parking delivering to your shop, I need you to write an official letter on paper with your official letterhead and logo on it to prove I was delivering to you so I can fight the ticket.

Sorry you got a ticket but there's non loading bay spaces you could have used and we don't paper with our logo and an official letterhead on it. You can pass our manager's details on in case they want to contact her to prove one way or another when you fight it but we can't do a letter on official paper with our logo in a letterhead as we don't have that sort of paper.
