Tonight's find in the grocery store: Commodore Perry IPA!!! omg @ussporcupine I've finally made it! To the land of—to the other land of Commodore Perry.
I'm drinking one now, to see for myself if it is "Victoriously hopped, with an arsenal of caramel malt flavors befitting the Hero of Lake Erie."

"Cyrus Tiffany in the Battle of Lake Erie, September 13, 1813," mural -  Martyl Langsdorf + Carol M. Highsmith
The Battle of Lake Erie, sometimes called the Battle of Put-in-Bay, was fought on 10 September 1813, on Lake Erie off the shore of Ohio during the War of 1812. Nine vessels of the United States Navy defeated and captured six vessels of the British Royal Navy. This ensured American control of the lake for the rest of the war, which in turn allowed the Americans to recover Detroit and win the Battle of the Thames to break the Indian confederation of Tecumseh. It was one of the biggest naval battles of the War of 1812.

“You have got to be kidding me,” The Shadow Singer grumbled as the High Lord told him we’ve been partnered for his next mission.
“Unfortunately, he’s not,” I huff to the tall male, just as annoyed as him. “Rhys with all due respect, I work alone,” Azriel contended and I scoff. “Does that apply to your love life too?” I quip but they both ignore me. “I know Az, but Eris likes her, he’s more likely to play by our rules if we use her as bait,” Rhys says. “It’s just a meeting, the both of you only have to get along for a few hours,” He hums and I roll my eyes, I couldn’t refuse the offer, he was paying me double for this. “Fine,” Azriel uttered, the fool agreed for free.
“Good, you leave at sunset,” The half-fae instructs then quickly dismisses the both of us when his mate comes into his office, a babbling Nyx in her arms. “Hi sweetie,” I coo at the two-year-old as I pass Feyre on the way out. “Auntie!” He exclaims with a bright smile. The High Lady waved at me and I returned it. “Be careful on your mission tonight,” She advises and I brush her off. “It’s just a meeting, nothing to be worried about.” I smile. “Oh, I wasn’t referring to your assignment,” Her eyes flick to Azriel and my lips form an ‘o’ shape in realization. She chuckled then gave me a wink as the Shadow Singer passed by me, muttering a curse under his breath. I return her smile then nod in a farewell and go the opposite direction down the hall.
The Spring Court was a lot duller than I had expected. Sure the flowers were in bloom and the sun still seeped through the trees but, there was no vibrancy to the colors. “Feyre really did a number on this place,” I hum, looking out at the deserted Court. It still held some beauty, the crystal clear lakes with lily pads floating heedlessly, the rolling hills, and flower fields.
“I kind of feel bad for him,” I mutter, bending down and plucking a daisy from a patch sprouting out the trunk of a maple tree. “Don’t,” Azriel huffed. We were on the border between Spring and Autumn so there was a weird merging between wildlife, the magnolia trees slowly shifting into maples, bunnies sectioned from foxes, and lush forests morphing into rustic woods.
“Are we early or is he just trying to make an entrance?” I sigh, already bored. “Early,” He replies and my shoulders sag. “Can you only respond with one-word answers?” I narrow my eyes on the Shadow Singer. He smirks. “No,” He says and I grit my teeth, looking down at the daisy in my hands.
We go silent for a moment. I stare out at the dusky sky, the last of the sun slipping below the hills. He seems content to continue staring at me, much to my dismay. I didn’t know what for, it’s not like he had to keep an eye on me, and there was nothing I could do that his shadows wouldn’t report back to him, they were often all over me, seemingly out of his control when I was around.
“What?” I snap my head back to him after only a minute, his stare becoming too physical, like I could feel the way his eyes traced my features. “Why are you dressed like that?” He tilts his head. I look down at my gown with creased brows. It was a silk slip, a rich mocha color. I look at what he’s wearing, his usual leathers. “It’s a meeting Azriel, we’re not battling warriors,” I remark. “Is it because we’re meeting with Eris?” He tilts his head. I cross my arms. “What’s that supposed to mean?” I bite back. “That you’re trying to impress him,” He surmises.
“Nuh-uh!”
“Nuh uh?” He mocks. “That’s your defense?” The brunette scoffs and my frown deepens, leaning against the tree at my back. “I wore the dress ‘cause I didn’t wanna change, okay?” I explain with narrowed brows. “And it’s not my fault he admires me,” I add. “Not that you know the feeling,” I murmur under my breath but of course, he heard it.
He takes a menacing step forward, shadows turning sporadic around him and I roll my eyes on the dramatics of it— anyone else would’ve been begging for forgiveness just by looking into the darkness of his eyes. “What was that?” His hand comes to my chin, forcing my head toward him. I jerk out of his hold with a grimace.
“I said you don’t know what it’s like to be admired, or do you need a reminder that you’ve been chasing the same girl for five hundred years?” This time I was the one to take a step forward, my chest nearly pressed to his. “Because newsflash Az, she doesn’t want you—” I start but his hands come to my wrists and pull them up above my head, pinning me to the tree, his other hand on my hip so I can’t thrash.
His nostrils flared, eyes ablaze and I nearly laughed. “You’re constantly teetering on that edge huh? Can’t ever keep your temper in check?” I arch a brow up at him, my smirk only widens as I watch him grit his teeth. He knew what I meant. Knew that he pounced on anyone who damaged his fragile ego, and talked down on his precious family, gods forbid I mention Morrigan. His hold moves from my waist to my neck, wrapping his large hand entirely around my throat, softly squeezing.
“You’re choking me,” I whisper out and the sadistic fuck has a smile on his face. “You seem like the type to be into that,” He presumes and he wouldn’t be far off if this was a different situation. I flush pink at the idea, it’d be a lie if I said I hadn’t imagined the Spymaster on top of me more than once. My cheeks were burning hot, I was beyond embarrassed, and slightly turned on.
“Not so talkative now, are we?” He was so close, so close his body was pressed to my own, our breath shared as his face hovered above mine, cauldron damn his height.
“Let me go,” I pull at my wrists but his grip is iron, and maybe my attempts were halfhearted because, in all honesty, I didn’t want to leave this position one bit. “You learn your lesson yet? Or are you gonna keep being a brat?” He hums and arousal pools in my panties. I quickly glamour the scent, praying he didn’t recognize it before I got the chance. “Fuck you,” I seethe, continuing my futile attempts to escape. “Such a filthy mouth, you wanna put it to better use?” He asks and if I wasn’t red before I definitely was now. “In your dreams,” I hiss. “Oh love, it is,” He smirks, and my brain stutters. What’d he just say?
My pointed ears perk before I can reply, noticing an unfamiliar pair of footsteps. Not Eris.
“Someone’s coming, kiss me,” I say with a rushed tone. “What?” His hand loosened around my neck. “Just—” I don’t finish and interrupt myself by lifting onto my toes and crashing my lips against his.
He seems taken aback for a moment then to my surprise, leans into it. I melt at the feeling. He was tentative at first but once I showed him this was what I asked for he seemed almost, hungry. His hand slips from my throat and cups my jaw instead, calloused thumb pulling at my bottom lip and forcing them open. I can’t help but obey his silent command, parting my lips wider so he can capture me fully. His mouth seals over mine yet again and my stomach ties into knots, the thrumming sensation in my ribcage making me realize this was a point of no return.
His tongue explored my mouth like it was his and his alone, he was devouring me and I savored every moment. An energy buzzed between us, my wrists still pinned up by his hold, but I wasn’t any less greedy with my lips. I wanted him to taste me, to memorize me, and never forget the feel of his lips on mine, I wanted it to hurt when he had to pull away. Languid movements with his tongue turn into messy, impatient strokes, needing all of me right then and there— and I would’ve given it to him if not for that pair of footsteps returning, so much closer this time.
“What’s going on here?” A gruff voice demands answers and Azriel hesitantly detaches, like he was unwilling.
It takes me a moment to even open my eyes, gods if he’s got me this paralyzed over just a kiss who knows how much more I could take? Azriel lets go of my wrists and I regain consciousness.
“I’m sorry Officer,” I put on my most innocent smile. The male in front of me was Autumn Court patrol, lower in rank based on the patches on his arms. “What’s an Illyrian doing so far from home?” He snarled the word like it was a curse. “We’re traveling sir,” I say, intertwining my hand with Azriel’s. He stiffens at the action as if I didn’t just have his lips on mine. “Travelin’?” The officer scoffs. “Out here?” He hums. “Yes sir, it’s our honeymoon,” I grin wildly, trying to capture the excitement of newlyweds as I hold our linked hands up.
The officer raises his brows a fraction, he was buying it. He was visibly older, you had to be ancient as a fae to start having wrinkles and this guy had plenty. “You know, I feel like I recognize you,” He hums and I swallow thickly. It was more likely for Azriel to get recognized out of the two of us, so the Shadow Singer didn’t take his chances and stuffed his face into my neck, lining kisses from my shoulder to my jaw. My hand goes into his hair, weaving my fingers into his soft, dark locks as I continue carrying on the conversation.
“Really? What from?” I tilt my head, resting my luck. “Not quite sure…” He thinks for a moment. “Ah, forget it probably just confusing you with my granddaughter, she’s lovely like you,” He says and I giggle light-heartedly. “That’s sweet to hear,” I smile. “Alright you kids be safe, perhaps find an inn somewhere,” He starts his trek once more. “Thank you, officer!” I call to him and he gives me a wave.
I nearly cackle as Azriel pulls away from my neck, my lipgloss smeared along his lips. I reach up and wipe it away with a teasing smile. “Not much of a spymaster if I’m the one saving you, hm?” I say, hands cupping his cheeks. “You were the one distracting me in the first place,” He defended, crossing his arms and I snicker. “Awh, poor Illyrian baby is pouting 'cause I’m better at his job,” I taunt, his gaze on my lips as I talk.
“Well, that was quite the show,” A familiar, smooth voice intones from a short distance away and I whip my head towards the figure, leaning against a tree with an unmistakable foxlike smirk on his face. “How long have you been standing there?” Azriel questions and it seems like the Heir might laugh. “It’s truly a wonder how your shadows didn’t find me, though I suppose they’re preoccupied at the moment,” He gestures to the ground beneath me where they were pooling at my feet, flicking up and twining at my ankle every now and again, completely forgetting what their job was in my presence.
The meeting went smoothly, Azriel was a bit on edge with the lack of his Shadows but other than that Eris complied easily, he seemed to have something up his sleeve but we’d worry about that at a later date, we were only ensuring his loyalty was still with us.
He updated us on some information including his father, the two males briefing over a plan to take down Beron, and as I stood there I realized I was just for show, a shiny jewel for Eris to look at, keep his attention before he got the idea that he could survive on his own. Not that I minded being looked at by the Heir, he was quite pretty— hel, I’d be lying if I said I haven’t dreamed about both the males in front of me, at once, more than once.
Azriel shadow-walked us back to the House of Wind when we were finished, or rather when he was finished. I probably could’ve stayed a few more minutes just to admire Eris in the pale moonlight, but my plans just had to be foiled by the Shadow Singer.
Az flew me the rest of the way into the house bridal style— since you couldn’t winnow straight in due to the wards. His hold on me felt more familiar than usual, and when he put me down he didn’t step away so neither did I.
“Hey,” Cassian said from the dining table, a mouthful of food muffling his voice. We both swivel towards the male, sat next to Nesta who couldn’t be bothered to look up from her book to greet us. “How’d the mission go?” The brunette at the table said once he swallowed his food. We both stiffen, the memory of that kiss has been replaying in my head over and over since it ended and yet it felt odd for anyone else to bring it up.
“Uh, went nice…” I shrug. Nesta looks up from her page, eyes piercing as they read me like the chapters in her book. “Really?” She intervenes and I nod. “Yup, just, so normal,” Azriel blurts out, and for a Spymaster, he was awfully bad at lying. Cassian creased his brows, clearly concerned for his brother. “Why are you acting so weird, then?” Nesta interrogates and the male and I share a look. “I don’t think he’s acting weird,” I scoff. “Do you think you’re acting weird?” My words are fast like I only have one breath to finish my sentence. “Pshh, never,” He shakes his head, looking down at his feet then back up to Lady Death.
“Right, well, man am I exhausted,” I stretch, feigning a yawn. “Yeah, the mission really wore me out,” He sighs, rolling his shoulders like there’s a weight off of them, following me up the stairs towards the bedrooms.
Nesta looks to her mate, a small smirk on her lips. “What?” The lord of bloodshed says cluelessly. “They’re totally going to fuck,” She hums, sinking into her chair a little and picking her book back up.
Azriel and I split off into our respective bedrooms, just across the hall from each other.
I paced beside my closed door, wondering what the fuck was I thinking when I let him kiss me. Sure I’ve always thought he was pretty but that was always a stupid fantasy, not something I would ever pursue… until now. Fuck, I am so finished. I repeatedly hit my palm against my forehead as I racked my head for any thought that didn’t immediately trace back to him. I couldn’t even look at my own hands without thinking about his hands, how they held my jaw— no. I wasn’t going to let myself romanticize this, it was just a mission. Nothing more. Just a kiss. A yearning, passion-filled kiss that fed all my cravings and somehow created new ones.
I groaned, deciding that this was the finest form of torture. I now stand still in front of my door, hoping that if I stare hard enough at it, he’ll come knocking and kiss me again because, fuck, I do want him.
I can’t sit here and wait for him to come rescue me from my own torment so I do it myself, hand coming to the doorknob and before I can psych myself out, I fling the door open.
To my shock, I’m immediately met with Azriel’s figure, his hand up like he was just about to knock.
“You couldn’t even let me make an entrance?” He tilts his head and I roll my eyes. “Shut up and kiss me already,” I grab him by the collar of his leathers and pull him in, the door closing behind him as his lips crash onto mine yet again.

Things You Probably Never Knew About The Great Lakes.....
1. Lake Superior is actually not a lake at all, but an inland sea .
2. All of the four other Great Lakes, plus three more the size of Lake Erie, would  fit inside of Lake Superior.
3. Isle Royale is a massive island surrounded by Lake Superior. Within this island are several smaller lakes. Yes, that’s a lake on a lake.
4. Despite its massive size, Lake Superior is an  extremely young   formation by Earth’s standards (only 10,000 years old).
5. There is enough water in Lake Superior to  submerge all of North and South America in 1 foot of water.
6. Lake Superior contains 3 quadrillion gallons of water (3,000,000,000,000,000). All five of the Great Lakes combined contain 6 quadrillion gallons.
7. Contained within Lake Superior is a whopping 10% of the world’s fresh surface water.
8. It’s estimated there are about 100 million lake trout   in Lake Superior. That’s nearly one-fifth of the human population of North America!
9. There are small outlets through which water leaves Lake Superior. It takes two centuries for all the water in the lake to replace itself.
10. Lake Erie is the fourth-largest Great Lake in surface area, and the smallest in depth. It’s the 11th largest lake on the planet.
11. There is alleged to be a 30- to 40-foot-long “monster” in Lake Erie named Bessie. The earliest recorded sighting goes back as early as 1793.
12. Water in Lake Erie replaces itself   in only 2.6 years, which is notable considering the water in Lake Superior takes two centuries.
13. The original publication of Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax contained the line, “I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie.”Fourteen years later, the Ohio Sea Grant Program wrote to Seuss to make the case that conditions had improved. He removed the line.
14. Not only is lake Erie the smallest Great Lake when it comes to volume, but it’s surrounded by the most industry.Seventeen metropolitan areas, each with populations of more than 50,000, border the Lake Erie basin.
15. During the War of 1812, the U.S. beat the British in a naval battle calledthe Battle of Lake Erie, forcing them to abandon Detroit.
16. The shoreline of all the Great Lakes combined equals nearly 44% of the  circumference  of the planet.
17. If not for the the Straits of Mackinac, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron might be considered one lake.Hydrologically speaking, they have the same mean water level and are considered one lake.
18. The Keystone State  was one of the largest and most luxurious wooden steamships running during the Civil War.In 1861, it disappeared. In 2013, it was found 30 miles northeast of Harrisville under 175 feet of water.
19. Goderich Mine is the largest salt mine in the world. Part of it runs underneath Lake Huron, more than 500 meters underground.
20. Below Lake Huron, there are  9,000-year-old animal-herding structures   used by prehistoric people from when the water levels were significantly lower.
21. There are  massive sinkholes in Lake Huron that have high amounts of sulfur and low amounts of oxygen, almost replicating the conditions of Earth’s ancient oceans 3 million years ago. Unique ecosystems are contained within them.
22. Lake Huron is the second largest among the Great Lakes, and the  fifth largest in the world.
23.  In size, Lake Michigan ranks third among the Great Lakes, and sixth among all freshwater lakes in the world.
24. Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is entirely within the borders of the United States.
25. The largest fresh water sand dunes in the world line the shores of Lake Michigan.
26. Because water enters and exits Lake Michigan through the same path, it takes 77 years longer for the water to replace itself   than in Huron, despite their similarity in size and depth. (Lake Michigan: 99 years, Lake Huron: 22 years)
27. When the temperature of Lake Michigan is below freezing, this happens.
28. Within Lake Michigan there is a “triangle” with a similar reputation to the Bermuda Triangle, where a large amount of “strange disappearances” have occurred. There have also been alleged UFO sightings.
29. Singapore, Mich., is a ghost town on the shores of Lake Michigan that was buried under sand in 1871. Because of severe weather conditions and a lack of resources due to the need to rebuild after the great Chicago fire, the town was lost completely.
30. In the mid-19th century, Lake Michigan had a pirate problem. Their booty: timber. In fact, the demise of Singapore is due in large part to the rapidly deforested area surrounding the town.
31. Jim Dreyer  swam across Lake Michigan in 1998 (65 miles), and then in 2003, he swam the length of Lake Michigan (422 miles).
32. Lake Michigan was the location of the first recorded “Big Great Lakes disaster,” in which a steamer carrying 600 people collided with a schooner delivering timber to Chicago. Four hundred and fifty people died.
33. Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes in surface area, and second smallest in depth. It’s the  14th largest lake   on the planet.
34. The province Ontario was  named after   the lake, and not vice versa.
35. In 1804, a Canadian warship, His Majesty’s Ship Speedy, sank in Lake Ontario. In 1990, wreck hunter Ed Burtt managed to find it.  Only, he isn’t allowed to recover any artifacts until a government-approved site to exhibit them is found. He’s still waiting.
36. Babe Ruth hit his  first major league home run   at Hanlan’s Point Stadium in Toronto. It landed in Lake Ontario and is believed to still be there.
37. A lake on Saturn’s moon Titan is named after Lake Ontario.

Hello! Could you please write a story where the reader disobeys orders given by Eris, and then she is hurt and Eris is angry? Thank you!
Didn’t Listen
Eris x reader
A/n: over protective scared Eris
Warnings: some angst and blood
The current situation you and your guard, Alfie, are in is your fault. You had talked Alfie into going out to the rock wall just behind the Forest House. Eris had told you a thousand times, ‘stay off the rock wall, it’s dangerous.’
You were currently hanging from a ledge on said rock wall, your foot slipping. Alfie was yelling at you to get down, but you honestly didn’t think you could get down. It also didn’t help that you were hanging over the Deep Lake. Another part of nature in Autumn you were told to never go near.
The myth of the Deep Lake was that the bottom was never ending. Not even the water nymphs came back from exploring the blackness of the bottom.
You were trying to your hardest not to panic and to do that you needed Alfie to shut the hell up. “ALFIE! I need you to be quiet so I can focus!” “Yes my Lady!” You rolled your eyes at the sarcasm lacing his tone. You inched one of your hands over slowly. Feeling the rock crumble you snap your hand back, you let it dangle before putting it back on the ledge.
“I’m getting Eris!” Alfie yelled, sprinting back to the house. You were panicking because now you were alone. And if you fell alone, with no one to potentially pull you from the lake before you drifted into the darkness scared the living hell out of you.
Your heart was thundering. You were doing everything to keep from shaking. If anything, you were disappointed in yourself right now. You knew Eris could climb the wall no problem. But that was because Eris and his brothers climb it when they were younger.
You just wanted to prove to Eris that you weren’t some fragile thing that always needed to be watched over. Lost in thought, you feel your hands sweating causing you to slip. “Oh no, no, no no.” You couldn’t get your grip back. You tried with all your strength to grip the rock, your nails breaking from scratching at the hard surface. You feel blood leaking from your cracked nails.
The mix of blood and sweat coating your hands forced you to let go. A blood curdling scream leaves your lips and your stomach drops. All you can do is close your eyes and try to force your body to a safe space.
As you fall a few more feet you hit a wide ledge. You hear your bones crunch, landing on your side. You let out a whimper. Tears prick your eyes as you roll onto your back, clutching your arm to your chest. The pain was burning your skin.
Your vision was going in and out, your eyes threatening to close. You force them open. If you closed your eyes you were afraid you would die. In your battle for consciousness you didn’t hear Eris and Alife sprinting to the wall.
The last thing you saw before you closed your eyes was Eris’ face.
When you finally opened your eyes you were in bed. Eris was sitting in a chair holding your good hand. His long red hair tousled from the amount of times he ran his hands through it from stress. Tears ran down his cheeks silently. He hadn’t noticed you were up yet. You could tell Eris was zoned out, his eyes had a distant look.
You squeezed his hand, his head snapping to you. His mouth set in a frown as he focused on you. “Hey,” you forced out, your throat dry from screaming, “Eris I’m ok.” He shakes his head slowly. “No. How can you say that? Why? Why did you do that? I’ve told you so many fucking times to stay away from the wall. And you blatantly disobey me.” His words were too calm. You went cold at his tone, the realization finally hitting you of how dangerous the wall truly was.
Eris’ tongue darted out, wetting his lips. He turned his face from you, closing his eyes and squeezing out unshed tears. “Eris, I’m sorry. I just wanted to show you I was strong…b-but it didn’t go how I wanted.” Eris scoffed his eyes opening. “Really?”
You swallowed the lump in your throat. “What did the healer say?” You wanted to change the subject before it turned into another fight. Eris takes a deep breath. Trying his best to stay calm. “You have a few bruised ribs, a broken arm but she fixed it, and a concussion. A few scrapes. Other than that you’re ok.” You nod against the pillow.
“Have I ever told you why I wanted you away from the wall?” Avoiding his gaze you answer, “No.” still clinging to your hand he rests his forearms next to you. “When my brothers and I were younger our father made us climb it. He told us whoever got to the top was the strongest and would be worthy of inheriting his power and title. We knew it was another bullshit competition he had come up with between us, but we couldn’t risk not participating.
He didn’t tell us that the rock was frail in places. It looked like it would hold us but was unnaturally thin. If we didn’t climb fast enough or grab the right places we’d fall, like you did. All seven of us were climbing one afternoon, I was almost ahead when Lucien slipped. I couldn’t let him drop. So when he slipped again I went back down and helped him.
I lost and was punished that night for showing compassion. For not taking what was rightfully mine and letting my heart get in the way.” Now you were crying. You had no idea. There was a lot Eris still hadn’t talked about when it came to Beron. There were decades of trauma he was working on sorting through.
You hated how this was how it came out. You scared him, probably sent him back to that moment when he saw you laying on that ledge. “I -“ His voice cracks, you cut Eris off by bringing his hand to your lips leaving a gentle kiss on the back of his hand.
“I’m sorry I scared you. That wasn’t what I wanted. I was just mad about yesterday and I didn’t know that was why, about the wall. And I’m so sorry he made you do that. But thank you for telling me, I know it’s hard to talk about it. Any of it. It’s just another weight off your chest my love and I’m proud of you.”
Eris gives you a small smile. “And I’m sorry about yesterday. You are strong, I’m just so scared to lose you.” You scoot over patting the spot you were just in. Eris climbs into bed and you rest your head on his chest.
“You’ll never be rid of me my love.” He lets out a breathy chuckle. “Good.”

Seuss’s The Lorax contained the line, “I hear things are just as bad up in Lake Erie.”
Fourteen years later, the Ohio Sea Grant Program wrote to Seuss to make the case that conditions had improved. He removed the line.
14. Not only is lake Erie the smallest Great Lake when it comes to volume, but it’s surrounded by the most industry.
Seventeen metropolitan areas, each with populations of more than 50,000, border the Lake Erie basin.
15. During the War of 1812, the U.S. beat the British in a naval battle called
the Battle of Lake Erie, forcing them to abandon Detroit.
16. The shoreline of all the Great Lakes combined equals nearly 44% of the circumference of the planet.
17. If not for the the Straits of Mackinac, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron might be considered one lake.
Hydrologically speaking, they have the same mean water level and are considered one lake.
18. The Keystone State was one of the largest and most luxurious wooden steamships running during the Civil War.
In 1861, it disappeared.

Counter to all those Elain's book arguments
Contains TOG Spoilers
"Elain's book can't be next because she was barely in SF"
Throne of Glass - Chaol 492 mentions
Crown of Midnight - Chaol 604 Mentions
Heir of Fire - Chaol 400 Mentions
Queen of Shadows - Chaol 480 Mentions
Empire of Stroms - Chaol 12
Tower of Dawn - Chaols Book
The book before Chaol got his own he wasn't even on page. His name was only mentioned through other characters. Though he had previously had his own POV in other books, SJM chose to completely eliminate his POV in Queen of Shadows in favor of waiting until his own book.
"Elain's book can't be next because she isn't connected to the plot"
In Empire of Storms Aelin, Rowan, Aedion, and Lysandra rearrange a meeting with the surviving lords of Terrasen but they reject her as a ruler due to her age.
Witch armies fly to Rifthold so Aelin send Rowan to rescue Dorian while she leaves for the coast to gather allies.
Elide is hunted by Ilken.
Aelin wants an alliance with the pirate king.
There is a battle scene and Aelin is taken by Maeve.
If Elain can't have the next book because she's not connected to the plot then how was it possible for Chaol to have his own book when he had nothing to do with the plots of EoS?
Not to mention Elain is connected to some of the major plots of ACOWAR / FAS / ACOSF:
ACOWAR - She went on before I could answer. "I do not have much time left - before I must return to the lake. To him."
ACOFAS - But Vassa's freedom would end. Lucien had said as much months ago, and still visited her often enough that I knew nothing in that regard had improved.
ACOSF - He should have asked someone before coming here how much time remained before Vassa would be forced to return to the continent.
Koschei said, "Tell my Vassa I'm waiting"
Elain had always wanted to visit the continent to study the tulips and other famed flowers.
Elain is the only one who had visions of Koschei, the girls along with Vassa who are trapped at the lake, as well as visions of the onyx box that's important to him. Elain is connected to Lucien who is living with Vassa who is a captive of Kochei and who is the driving force of a lot of the unrest in their world, whispering on the winds to stir up trouble. Beron now wants to ally with him and that also involves Lucien and Eris as his sons. Az may have always hated Eris but he's Lucien's brother and SJM started building the idea that they'll be reconnecting back in ACOWAR and continuing through SF while SF basically had the NC using Eris as a pawn.
ACOSF - With a new war possible and Briallyn up to her bullshit with Koschei, we need a strong ally. We need the Spring Court's forces.
"No. But we need to summon Lucien." "We need to tell him the news and permanently station him at the Spring Court to contain any damage and be our eyes and ears."
Nesta's throat constricted, and she surveyed the swaying cerry blossoms overhead. Elain would love this place. / But Elain...The Spring Court had been made for someone like her. / Too bad her sister refused to see her. Nesta would have told Elain to visit this place.
So yes, Elain is connected to some of the most pressing concerns in the ACOTAR world. Not to mention with the peace treaty remaining unsigned, that's definitely more of an Elucien story than an Azriel one.
"Cassian and Chaol had Bonus Chapters and got the next book so Az will get the next book since he got a Bonus"
Cassian's Bonus hinted at his mating bond but it wasn't accepted until 2 books and almost 2 years later on the timeline. He didn't actually get the next book after his bonus because Feyre got the next book (ACOWAR).
Azriels Bonus did hint at his mating bond but just as Cassian and Lucien's bonds were introduced / hinted at but not accepted for years, it's possible Az's bond won't be accepted for years.
Neither Lucien or Elain needed a bonus to hint at their mating bond because their mating bond was introduced into the actual series.
Also, the Chaol bonus chapter had nothing to do with hinting at his endgame love interest and is different from either Cassian or Az's bonus because on the timeline his story picked up immediately after his bonus while neither Cassian or Azriel's did.
"Elain hasn't hit rock bottom"
Throughout SF, Elain faced pushback from Nesta. They had the worst fight they'd ever had in all their years, Nesta tried blaming Elain for their fathers death, she faced opposition from Nesta on choices Elain made for herself, and she dealt with rejection from Azriel, ending his bonus with hurt and confusion.
In comparison, Azriel began his bonus with feeling put out at his lack of a mating bond, jealousy toward Lucien, then mad at Rhys and himself. But by the end of his bonus he left feeling more hopeful and at peace. And in the actual book there was nothing to indicate that Az was at rock bottom.
I'm not sure either is truly at rock bottom (Elain already reached hers in ACOWAR and I don't think she's ever going back to that) but Az is definitely not worse off than her. Especially when his issues were a sum total of "why don't I get someone to love" while Elain's dealt with people calling her entire character into question.
"Elain isn't ready for a book, she hasn't had enough development."
Elain cocked her head. Didn't dissolve into the crying mess she usually became when Graysen came up.
Elain, surprisingly held her ground.
Challenge filled each word. Challenge - from Elain, of all people.
"Using me."
"You do not decide what I can and cannot do, Nesta."
"I am not a child to be fought over."
Feyre said to her, gratingly gentle, "It wasn't an easy choice for me to ask Elain to endanger herself like this."
"You think Elain is boring?" "I think she's kind, and I'll take kindess over nastiness any day. But I also think we haven't yet seen all she has to offer."
"Let's focus on helping one sister before we start on the other."
"Including Elain, who is more than capable of defending herself against the darkness of the Trove, if she chooses to. Don't underestimate her."
When Feyre had offered to let her remain home, Elain had squared her shoulders and declared that she was a part of this court - and would do whatever was needed.
Wasn't the entire point of the first half of the Feysand bonus chapter telling us all about Elain? How she surprised them? How she's probably capable of more than they had given her credit for? How Feyre didn't mention anything to her but thought how if Elain had accepted Lucien's gift (metaphor for Lucien himself), no harm would have come to her? How after they help Nesta they'll focus on helping Elain? Didn't SF also demonstrate the same?
People keep saying Elain needs to be more involved in the ICs business to have a book but Nesta began her journey refusing everything to do with the IC. And if Elain is not staying in the NC, why would she be majorly involved in what they're doing?
Elain herself said she's ready for more. Rhys and Amren confirm it as well. All that now needs to happen is her putting that into action in her own book.
"Elain isn't connected to the crossover"
First off, Az isn't connected to the crossover in the ACOTAR series, there were no hints that Truth Teller was part of prophecy in SF. I imagine SJM will eventually merge the two storylines but we don't know if that's going to happen in the next ACOTAR book. As it stands, these series are still marketed on Bloomsbury and SJMs websites as standalone series and SJMs website still says you can read them in any order you want.
If you look back over SJMs interviews she once said she knew who the first two books of the spin-offs were going to be about but was leaving the third open (and was considering a book set in the past). She had already done research for Elain's book at that time which to me logically means the Koschei storyline was never going to extend past book 2 and she wasn't sure whether Az would have a spin-off book.
In another interview she said her initial pitch for the spin-offs hadn't changed and that SF simply expanded the world. You can interpret that a few ways but one of those interpretations is that Elain's book is still second as she originally intended and now that the world expanded she knows who the third book will be about (and any books beyond that). And that does mean Koschei could still be dealt with in the second spin-off, paving the way for possible crossover storylines to be introduced in the third (and later dealt with in any future ACOTAR books she may have signed on for). Remember, the point of SF was to try to stop another war in their world from happening, they are trying to prevent a repeat of ACOWAR.
Everything above is based on facts though my own interpretation.
This part is a complete personal opinion and not based on any fact but, I truly don't think Az deserves his HEA right now. He called Elain a mistake yet he gets to end up with his mate in the next book? That would be a little like Tamlin finding his HEA before Feyre after what went down in book 2. Az barely blinked at the thought of killing Lucien and is insanely jealous of him yet Lucien deserves to continue suffering for another book while Az gets rewarded?
I don't think Az is deserving of anyone until he realizes that Lucien is a good male and that he's happy for Elucien.
Cassian was jealous of what Rhys and Feyre had but he was still happy for them, still felt no one deserved it more. When it comes to Lucien, Az is resentful through and through and until he can see Elain happy with Lucien and not feel bitter, I don't think he's in a position to end up with his own mate.
Also, the series started with Feysand and I know some feel the series should end with an Archeron sister but that makes less sense to me. The series started with Feysand and the Night Court. The series should end with the Night Court.
Chaol's journey took us away from Aelin and Rowan to a part of the continent only he had reason to travel to then SJM brought all the characters back together in the final book in the main lands. It doesn't make sense to me to have an Elucien book that would end the spin off series in Spring, Day and the continent as I don't think much of their storyline will take place in the Night Court. To me it makes the most sense to step away from the NC in the next book then eventually bring it back to where Feysands story started. Az is part of the IC and I imagine his book will deal with Feyre and Rhys a bit more than Elain and Lucien's will.
Then if there is going to be a more major crossover storyline down the road, the current spin-offs will have ended with Feyre and Rhys in the mix of things (they represent the "Dumbledore" or "Gandalf" of the series, nothing new happens without their involvement).
I think either an Elucien or Gwynriel book is still a possibility but I don't agree with the arguments as to why Elain's can't be next. And I really hate the arguments claiming that anyone who thinks Elain could be the next book is delusional.
And it's not just about Elain. Lucien's story has been coming since book 1 and when the author talked about getting into the groove of writing ACOTAR 5, where she's got that feeling of having a crush, a possible Elucien book that would most likely feature Lucien (with fire in his blood), Helion (who she's weirdly obsessed with), Eris, Elain (who shares her own real life energy), Jurian and Vassa could absolutely be a reason for her to feel smitten. That is a book filled with a whole lot of sass, snark, and side characters who she'd finally have a chance to explore in greater detail.

Look for the Light Chapter 4
Tumblr media
- Summary: Aly finds herself trying to escape the Boston QZ. What Aly doesn’t know is Tess is pairing her up with Joel to go on a dangerous mission to find Tommy. Will Aly survive the brooding, moody Joel or will she find herself falling hard for him?
Joel’s POV
You’d spent the last two days treading tirelessly on the road. The days were long, and the nights were spent pretty much sleepless. You couldn’t remember the last time you’d had a full night’s rest. You averaged maybe four or five hours a night, if that.
The nights were getting longer as October hit. As you drove down the endless highway, you could see leaves of every shade of fall. There were bright yellow, deep red, and orange leaves. The massive red maple trees lined the highway. It was quite the view. You had always liked this time of year.
Aly sat in the passenger seat, staring mindlessly out the window. You could see Lake Erie a few miles to the right of you. Maybe she was admiring the view. Or maybe she was wishing she wasn’t in the truck with you.
You gave her the cold shoulder the past two days. She was probably sick of your bullshit. She hadn’t even tried to talk to you since the first night you set up camp back in Boston. That was okay though. You didn’t really feel like arguing with her today.
You passed a sign that said “Now Entering Cleveland, Ohio” and Aly sat up straight in her seat at the sight of the sign. You wondered what got into her but didn’t ask.
She quickly pulled out the large map and ran a finger down the blue line that was trailed from Boston to Salt Lake City. Her blue eyes went wide and she looked over at you. “This city is where the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Museum is,” she stated excitedly.
“And?” you asked casually.
“I always wanted to go since I was a little girl. Can we please go?” she asked with hope in her voice.
“No.” You said sternly.
“Please?” she asked again, desperation in her voice.
“I said no.” This time your voice went deeper, you wanted her to know that no meant no. You were coming up on the exit sign quickly, just a couple of miles from it.
“Oh come on, Joel. This is the only thing I’ll ever ask you to do. Pleaseeeeee.” She turned to face you and batted her eyelashes. You turned your head to look at her, and she had the most innocent look on her face. She knew what she was doing. She was trying to pull on the old heartstrings and make you say yes. That wouldn’t work on you, though. Not a chance.
“Can you please act your age? Pressuring people with the whole innocent eyes look isn’t going to get you anywhere fast.”
She frowned. “I think a 35 year old can get pretty damn far with the right kind of influence,” she huffed back at you. So that’s how old she was. You figured she was in her early 30’s.
“Well, trying to coax a 50 year old man like that isn’t gonna work.” She rolled her eyes back at you.
You glanced back at the road for a few seconds and then back at her again. Her eyes looked sad this time, almost like she was about to tear up. She faced back towards the window and away from you, sighing quietly.
Focus, Joel. Don’t let a girl influence you. You can’t give in. You were struggling hard with your thoughts as you were only feet away from the exit now. You gripped the steering wheel hard and concentrated on the road.
You glanced back over at her from the corner of your eye, and she was leaning against the glass now just staring out. Don’t do it, Joel. Keep your eyes on the road. You screamed internally as you lost the battle. Goddamn it.
You turned the steering wheel hard to the right and got off the exit. The exit that would take you straight to the museum. Aly sprung to life as she pulled away from the window and stared at you. Her eyes lit up like Christmas lights. There was a huge smile pinned across her face. “We’re going to the museum?!” she asked excitedly. She was practically bouncing up and down in her seat. “I knew you’d budge!” she said proudly.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’m not doing this for you. I want to stop for the night and get some rest. This seems like a good spot,” you snapped at her. She rolled her eyes and smiled triumphantly.
You shook your head and looked back at the road. A small smile turned up at the corner of your lips, but you quickly wiped it away before she saw.
The road was desolate as the truck rolled down the wide street. There were a couple of vacant cars parked along the way, but it seemed pretty bare. Lake Erie glistened as small waves moved in the distance. You hadn’t been here since before the virus started. Trees blew quietly as colorful leaves fell to the ground and blew across the truck. It was actually pretty peaceful. You embraced the peace knowing that chaos was just around every corner.
You suddenly stopped the truck and parked in front of the towering building. As you and Aly climbed out of the truck, you saw the big, bold letters across the center. It said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in big white letters with a red background, making the letters stand out.
The museum was shaped like a pyramid and had long, sky-high windows. The entire front of the building was made of glass. Not all of the glass was intact anymore. There were a few broken windows with vines hanging out of them. But overall, it still looked like the same old museum. The building was seven stories high and still magnificent in its own way.
“Wow,” Aly said in amazement as she looked over the building with awe in her eyes.
“Yeah. It’s quite something,” you said.
“Come on, let’s go in,” she said as she walked up to the front doors in a hurry. As soon as she latched onto the handle and pulled, the door wouldn’t budge. She tried pulling harder and nothing happened. Frustration flushed over her face and she silently cursed.
You walked up to her and pulled her hand away from the door. She turned around and scowled. “Hey, calm down. You see that small opening above the sign?” you said, pointing overhead. Her eyes followed. “I think I can lift you up and get you through there. You think you can manage to get the door open from the inside?”
“I don’t see why not.”
“Alright, step up and I’ll get you up there.” You knelt down and held your hands out, waiting for her to hop up. She placed her left boot in your hands and grabbed onto your left shoulder to steady herself. You stood up straight and lifted her in the air.
“Just a little higher, I can almost reach,” she called overhead. You lifted a little higher and she grabbed onto the small awning and pulled herself on the ledge.
You watched her disappear and heard a thud as she jumped down to the ground on the inside of the building. You waited a few minutes as you heard large items being moved around inside. Then there was silence. “Aly, you good?” you asked, concern in your voice. The last thing you needed was her getting attacked when you weren’t in the building with her. Not that she couldn’t take care of herself.
A few seconds later you could hear a large board being pulled off the door, and then the heavy doors were being pulled open. The doors were old and squeaky, and it echoed through the halls. You cringed. “You think you could be a little quieter?” displeasure thick in your tone.
She rolled her eyes and made a face at you. “Sorry I opened the door for you then. Please tell me something else that I could annoy you with.” As she turned around, she ran into an old, black office chair. The chair fell on its side and made a loud crashing sound throughout the foyer.
“You sure do know how to do the opposite of what I say don’t you.” You shook your head, annoyed again.
She turned around and gave you a dramatic look. “It’s apparently what I’m here for, to annoy you and not listen to a thing you say.” You laughed under your breath when she turned the other way. This girl really was a spitfire. She knew how to throw things back in your face and make a comeback.
She walked further into the main entrance. Old Rock albums hung from the walls with signed autographs on all of them. Vines were littering the walls, intercepting the albums. It kind of reminded you of that scene in Jumanji where the house becomes a jungle. It was just missing all the water and crocodiles. You laughed at that image. Imagine an apocalypse and include it with a doomed board game.
“How many floors does this place have?” she asked you curiously.
“Seven.”
“This place is even bigger than I imagined. It’s incredible,” she breathed.
Before you knew it, she was running up the stairs.
“Hey, wait up. Be careful,” you huffed.
“Come on, slow poke. I’ll race you,” she said as she continued up the winding staircase. You were in no mood to try to argue. She’d just fire back at you. You sighed as you climbed up the worn stairs.
You ended up on the third floor. You found Aly running her hands over a display case with Pearl Jam displayed in big, colorful letters. Their poster hung overhead. Acoustic and electric guitars were sprawled across the dimly lit walls. The guitars were out in the open, waiting for the taking.
You ran a hand over Eddie Vedder’s 1934 Martin 0-18 acoustic guitar. The guitar was smooth. There wasn’t too much dust on it. It was still in pristine condition. You carefully unmounted the guitar and took it down.
You found a small platform and sat down, the guitar in your hands. It felt so good to hold one again. It’d been so long since you played. Maybe about 20 years now. You still remembered every single cord to every song you knew.
The acoustic guitar fit in your hands perfectly. You ran your hands along the strings and closed your eyes, soaking up the moment. You opened your eyes and started playing softly. The guitar came to life in your hands. You were playing “Around the Bend” by Pearl Jam. One of your favorites.
Aly turned and looked at you, curiosity swirling in her blue eyes. “Hey, you’re playing Around the Bend.” A soft smile spread across her pink lips.
She knew Pearl Jam? You were impressed. “You a Pearl Jam fan?”
“Am I a fan? Absolutely!” She laughed as she spoke, “My dad took me to their concert when I was a little girl, and I was instantly hooked into the Rock and Roll scene. My dad really influenced my taste in music.” Her smile dropped and sadness clouded her eyes. Her mind was somewhere else in that instant. You guessed something had happened to her dad. You wouldn’t ask her though. No need to pry in a place you didn’t belong.
You interrupted her deep thoughts as you asked, “What’s your favorite Pearl Jam song?” You were curious. Even though you shouldn’t be.
She looked back up at you. “You’re playing it right now,” she whispered quietly. You locked eyes with her in that moment. Her dark blue eyes looked like they were sparkling. She just continued staring at you, listening intently to the song. Something shifted inside you. Something you hadn’t felt in a long time. You shoved that feeling aside and buried it deep in the ground where it belonged.
You broke her gaze as the song ended. You quickly started another song. “Rosemary” by Deftones echoed through the room.
She took a couple steps closer to you and stopped. “How’d you know that was my favorite song of all time?”
You looked up and stared at her. Your eyes wide. She was focused fervently on your hands as they strummed up and down the strings smoothly. Then she was looking back up into your eyes. Shit. Keep those feelings down, Joel. You’re not going there. You kept staring at her though, your eyes moving down to her lips. They looked soft, inviting. She really was attractive and had the same taste in music as you. Intriguing.
Her dark hair fell in waves past her shoulders. Her eyes looked like sapphire diamonds. Beautiful. Soft features played across her face. She wore a grey tank top, tight blue jeans, and dark brown hiking boots. A black hoodie was wrapped tightly around her waist.
She was toned, maybe she was a gymnast back in the day. And her legs. God her legs went on for days. She really was a vision. You hadn’t given yourself the chance to really take a good look at her from the first day you met her. You were too busy trying to make her hate you. And you’d do everything in your power to make her feel that way. You didn’t really want to do that though. Not really.
“Deftones huh? Your favorite band?”
“My favorite,” she purred back. A chill ran down your spine nice and slow. Like a shot of morphine running through your veins. Steady but deadly…
A glimpse of something caught your eye. You could’ve sworn you saw movement in the corner of the room, but nothing was there. You continued playing, but kept your guard up.
A few seconds later you saw something creep slowly in the distance. Your heart sped up and you stopped playing the guitar. Silence filled the room. Aly started to say something but you signaled her to stay quiet as you brought your index finger to your lips.
You stood up and moved lightly towards Aly. One foot in front of the other, carefully making sure you didn’t make too much noise. Something was staring straight at you behind the corner in the shadows. You squinted to try to look past the darkness. Silence.
You took two more steps forward, and a piece of wood cracked underneath your foot. You stood still and held your breath. Seconds later you heard a loud screech as something came barreling towards you.
“Aly, move!” you screamed with alarm filling your voice. She quickly jumped out of the way. You took the acoustic guitar and bashed it right over the creature’s head. It instantly sank to the floor as pieces of brain splattered across the floor. Eddie Vedder would’ve been proud. At least his guitar died taking out an enemy. The guitar laid in pieces, littered all over the ground. Damn. That was a good guitar too.
“What was that thing?” Aly asked in shock. Surprise written all over her face.
“Stalkers,” you said with a snarl. “They’re silent. They hide and sneak up on people. That’s how they get them so easily. I think they’re more dangerous than clickers. They thrive off stealth. Once they stake out their victim, they move just slow enough that they can’t be heard. Then once you’re caught off guard, they pounce.” You were afraid there might be infected here. The museum was just too big. You shouldn’t have come.
“Do you think there’s more?” She asked cautiously.
“If there’s one that means there’s multiple others.” Fear shot across her eyes. You wouldn’t lie, you were scared too.
“We need to stay on guard. They could be anywhere.” Aly nodded her head in agreement.
“Uhhh, Joel,” she said too safely.
“What?” You turned towards her and saw what she was staring at. Two more stalkers appeared in the shadows behind a display case. They were both crouched down, sneaking glances. Their eyes glowed in the dark. They were white and lifeless. Fungus was growing out of their skulls, almost like they had antlers or horns. Their bodies were deformed and scratches lined their hollow bodies.
“Holy shit,” Aly whispered. She pulled her 9mm semi-automatic pistol out of her pocket. You heard the clicking sound of the grip safety go off. She brought the gun up to eye level and was ready to shoot. You loaded your shotgun and got ready to blow some brains off some stalkers.
The two stalkers came running. They were faster than you remembered them being. If you didn’t keep your eyes on them, they could pass you by in an instant. They were fast as lightning.
Aly shot at the stalker on the right side of the room. It came crashing through a display, knocking over records and guitars. A bullet went through the side of its neck, and that seemed to make it more mad. The creature made a terrible croaking noise and got down on all fours. It jumped at Aly, and she shot it right through the forehead. The stalker made one last crying sound as it died. The other stalker tried to reach you, but you shot a hole in its face. It dropped on top of the other lifeless stalker.
“Let’s get the hell out of here,” you demanded.
“You don’t have to tell me twice.”
Your feet hit the floor as you ran towards the stairs. Vines were lining the stairwell, and the steps were starting to crumble from decay and rust buildup. Aly followed quickly behind you, making sure to stay in close proximity.
As soon as you made it down the stairs, you stopped dead in your tracks. You slowly backed up against the wall and stayed in the shadows, making sure you two wouldn’t be seen or heard. You pulled Aly behind you, trying to shield her from what was in the room with you.
The front door was now completely blocked by two clickers. Son of a bitch. This place was infested by infected. The two clickers paced the floor, stopping every few seconds to listen for possible victims. Their heads were just giant fungal growths, and thankfully they were blind. But that just meant they had outstanding hearing. They could hear a pen drop from across the room.
You needed to find another way out if you could. If you drew the attention with your shotgun, other infected might come out of the shadows and attack. You looked to the left of you, and there was the entrance to the auditorium. You looked back at Aly and nodded your head, signaling her to follow.
The two of you crept silently around the corner and turned into the auditorium. There was a large black stage with red curtains draped over the sides. Rows of violet theatre chairs lined the front of the stage. There were five rows all together. Small cracks lined the floors with roots coming up from the openings.
The lights were off in the auditorium, and you couldn’t find the light switch. The sun set about half an hour ago, so the room was filled with darkness. The only light that crept in was the dimly lit lights from the main entrance. You turned your flashlight on and shined it across the room. You couldn’t see any form of escape from here.
Shit.
You stayed low to the ground as both of you crept warily towards the massive stage. Low screeches could be heard in the distance. That meant more of those fuckers were around. You couldn’t tell where though.
Aly held up her flashlight and headed behind the dust covered curtain. “Joel,” she whispered excitedly. “I think I found a way out.”
You hurried over to where she was and saw a big metal door with a red glowing sign that read Exit. Aly pushed the door open, the door slightly creaking as you both went through.
What lay ahead was a narrow, long hallway. A leak in the right corner of the ceiling was dripping, making a soft pattering noise on the ground. Dark rust covered the walls. You made your way cautiously down the never ending hallway. Two doors on opposite sides of the wall sat at the end of the hallway.
“Which way do we go?” Aly looked between both doors.
You scratched your head, thinking. “Let’s try the left door first and see where it takes us.” She nodded and followed you as you turned the rusted door knob and walked into pure darkness.
An ominous stairwell going downstairs sat in the middle of the room. The rest of the room was filled with old cardboard boxes that had mold growing on the sides. It smelled like mildew and dust, disgusting.
“I’m not going down there,” Aly said, shaking her head in defiance. You didn’t blame her. You weren’t planning on going down there either.
“Let’s try the other door,” you said as you walked out of the room. As soon as you tried to turn the other doorknob it wouldn’t budge. You slammed your body up against the door and still nothing. “Shit. I guess we need to go back the way we came then.”
“Should we try to get back to the main entrance? Maybe the clickers moved,” Aly said with hope in her voice. You nodded in agreement.
“I don’t see many other options we can try.” You moved silently but quickly down the eerie hallway and opened up the stage door. As soon as the door closed a loud crash sounded across the stage. The entire left side of the curtain collapsed to the floor with a loud thud.
You both froze in place. Before you could react, the same clickers that had been guarding the front door ran wildly into the room. Knocking over display cases as glass went crashing to the floor.
“Run!” You screamed, horror filling your voice. You and Aly ran as fast as you could across the stage and jumped for the ground. Just as your feet hit the ground, you tripped over the end of one of the theatre chairs and tumbled to the ground. Pain shot through you, but you shook it off.
As you turned to get up off the ground something hit you fast and hard, pinning you to the ground. A mouth full of sharp teeth and a head made entirely of fungus gnashed in your face.
“Joel!” Aly screamed in horror as she ran in your direction. She was a few feet behind you the last time you laid eyes on her.
You grunted as you used all your strength to hold back the clicker from biting into your neck. There was no way you could reach your knife or gun at this point. You were using everything you had mustered inside you to hold this clicker back. It was thrashing and fighting your hold.
You were about to lose your grip as the clicker closed in on you. The next thing you saw was Aly jumping on the clicker’s back, jamming a knife right through the side of its skull. The clicker went lifeless as its body fell to the ground.
Another clicker came from behind you, making squealing sounds loudly. You could hear heavy footsteps and glass being thrown around. Aly whipped the pistol out of her pocket and shot a bullet straight through its eyes. The clicker dropped instantly.
She let out a long breath as she relaxed her body. You were still laying flat on your back, shock running through your system. She helped you stand up as your body shook off the pain from the fall. “Thanks,” you breathed heavily.
“Don’t mention it. Let’s just get the hell out of here,” she said with exhaustion taking over her voice.
Muscle soreness and sleep were trying to overtake your body as you walked through the auditorium doors and into the main entrance area. You could see a clear passage to the front doors you had originally come through. You were almost in the clear. Aly was a few paces ahead of you.
All of a sudden the floor caved in about a foot in front of you. Panic sliced through you as Aly fell through, the floor swallowing her. Her scream echoed throughout the room, horror clouding your body.
“Aly!” you screamed, terror charging through you. You ran to the edge of the gaping hole and looked down. As you looked down, it seemed to reach down 20 ft. Moss consumed the hole and vines crept out of the opening.
Aly was holding on for dear life with both hands on a winding root that was sticking out of the moss. “Joel, help!” she screamed out in fear, holding on for dear life. You reached out for her hand but couldn’t quite reach her. You tried again, but it didn’t budge. You wished you had rope right at this moment. You looked around for something to use, but there was nothing like that lying around.
You looked back down and out of the corner of your eye you saw something moving at the bottom in the darkness. You flashed your light into the moss covered hole and your heart instantly sank.
“Aly, whatever you do, don’t look down.”
“Don’t tell me that, Joel. Seriously, now I do want to look and that’s going to make me lose my concentration!”
What lay deep beneath her were around 20 clickers that were clawing at the earth trying to climb up the steep wall of moss. Holy shit. Aly slightly glanced down and spotted the death trap beneath her.
“Oh my God, Joel! What do I do? I’m gonna fall. My hands, they’re slipping!” Tears started streaming down her face, white knuckles gripping tightly on the roots.
“Hey, look at me.” She didn’t budge and continued looking down in horror. “Aly, look at me!” You said desperately. She instantly looked up and locked eyes with you. Deep blue eyes pierced through you. She looked so scared in that moment. Adrenaline pumped through you as dread filled your body. “Focus on me and only me. Breathe.” Her eyes relaxed a little as she stared into your eyes. “You’re going to have to jump to me. That’s the only way,” you said with concern filling your tone.
“No, no. I can’t. I can’t do it.” She shook her head as she looked down again.
“Alyson! Look. At. Me,” you demanded. Your voice was desperate, pleading. She looked back up to you, attention in her eyes. That was the first time you said her full name. You’d never done that before.
“You can do this. You have to try, okay?” Your eyes were wide, waiting for her answer.
She closed her eyes for a few seconds and then looked up at you. “Okay, okay. Tell me what to do.”
“Swing your body and get a little momentum going, then jump towards me. I’ll catch you.”
“You promise?” She looked so scared. You were scared too. Scared something would go wrong or that she’d slip to her death. No. You wouldn’t let that happen.
“I give you my word,” you breathed back.
The clickers were becoming more violent as they were now jumping and sinking their long nails into the bed of moss. You had no doubt if you waited long enough the clickers would find a way up out of the hole in the ground. You needed to hurry and fast.
“On three you jump. Got it?” Aly shook her head in agreement, her pupils getting bigger as fear consumed her. “One.” Aly started shifting her weight, trying to swing herself over to you. “Two.” She took a deep breath. You swear your heart skipped a beat, anticipation filling your gut. “Three!” you yelled.
She got as much momentum as she could and jumped. You had your leg wrapped around a desk, trying to give you something to latch around so you wouldn’t fall in. You caught Aly’s arms and held on tight.
As soon as you started pulling her up, a clicker reached up and pulled hard on her leg. A scream escaped her lips as one of her hands slipped out of your grasp. The clickers roared to life underneath you, victory closing in on them. Or so they thought.
You held on so tight to her arm, your knuckles were white as snow. You wouldn’t let go no matter what. “Throw me your gun!” you yelled fiercely.
“What!”
“Do it. Now!”
She reached into her pocket and tossed the gun. You caught it immediately, holding onto it like it was your lifeline. The clicker had a tight grip on her ankle, doing everything in its will to bite into her flesh. “Bite this, fucker!” You pulled the trigger and a bullet landed squarely through its skull, releasing its grip from Aly’s ankle.
You quickly used the rest of your strength to pull Aly up to safety. She was in shock and crashed against your body. She was exhausted. “Hey, we need to get out of here,” you said, jolting her upright.
“You saved me. I was almost…” her voice trailed off as she searched your eyes. Your eyes softened. She looked so scared, so lost. You wanted to hold her right then and there. You didn’t though. You couldn’t…
Clickers started to push their way to the top of the opening as at least a dozen appeared in sight. “We have to go, now!” you yelled as you grabbed Aly’s wrist and pulled her up off the ground. Your feet hit the floor as you dodged broken glass and displays scattered everywhere.
You barged through the doors and ran as fast as your legs could carry you to the truck. You threw yourself in the truck and Aly slammed the door shut after jumping in. You jammed the key in the ignition and the engine roared to life. You put it in drive and put all your pressure on the gas. You peeled out of the parking lot and gunned it. In the distance you could see clickers pouring out of the museum, trying to follow your trail. You escaped just in time. Your heart was in your throat.
Aly let out the biggest sigh and sunk into the passenger seat. You were breathing heavy, focusing on the road ahead of you. The clock read 11:00pm. You were running off fumes at this point. You wanted to get the hell out of this town though. No more running into infected tonight, you’d had enough.
“You alright?” you asked as you glanced over to look at her. Her face was white, clearly still in shock. She didn’t answer. She just stared into the distance. You reached over and nudged her shoulder. “Aly?”
“Oh, were you saying something to me?” She looked over at you, fear still in her eyes.
“Yeah. I asked if you were okay.” Sympathy swamped your eyes. She was traumatized.
“Oh umm I’m fine. I’m just a little shaken up. I’ll be okay,” she answered quietly. She was not fine though, and you knew it.
“You okay to sleep in the car tonight? I’m gettin’ us out of this fucked up town. I’m not taking any more chances tonight.”
She nodded. “Yeah, that’s fine. You gonna be okay driving for a while?” Concern carried in her voice.
“I’ll be fine. You just get some rest. We’ll stop tomorrow. Somewhere safer.” You rubbed your eyes, thinking of anything to keep your mind off sleep.
“Alright. Wake me up if you change your mind,” she said sleepily as she laid down across half of the front seat. She closed her eyes and got as comfortable as she could. Her head was so close to your leg, her long smooth hair grazing the pant leg of your jeans.
You almost reached out to her, wanting so badly to run your fingers through her hair. Wanting to soothe the fear out of her after everything that had happened today. You reached your hand out, inches away from her but stopped yourself. Stop, Joel. You told yourself you wouldn’t get close to this girl. Just get to Salt Lake City and go your own separate ways.
“God help me,” you whispered to yourself silently as you let the night encase you and drown away any feelings you might have inside your black heart.

U S Brig Niagara
The Flagship Niagara is one of the most historically authentic tall ships in the United States. As an accurate reproduction of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry’s victorious flagship from the War of 1812’s Battle of Lake Erie, the ship represents both Pennsylvania and her homeport of Erie in ports throughout the Great Lakes.

ended up posting onto AO3 for funsies if you'd rather read there
Azriel does not fidget.
He was a battle-hardened warrior with centuries of training in stoicism– he knew better than to fidget.
But, by the fourth time the Raskian dignitary left a lingering hand squeezing Eris's shoulder, Azriel found his legs jittering with frantic energy, hands squeezing rhythmically– imagining crushing that olive-skinned hand until bones crunched.
The collective murmur of the crowd echoed around the Great Hall, bouncing off the soaring arched ceiling and blanketing Azriel in its inescapable din.
"This is my spymaster, Azriel." He could hear his brother's garbled voice through the racket to his right, drawing Azriel's attention away from the sight of Eris and the dignitary leaning in close to one another.
Azriel couldn't erase the scowl from his face as Rhysand introduced him to a Monteseren nobleman, if the emerald and silver embellished robes were any indication.
"Wow." The male gawked at Azriel as if he were a roadside attraction, leaning in to Rhysand to ask, "Where did you get him from?"
His brothers eyes shot wide as the moon. Not giving the conversation a chance, Azriel stalked away with a growl– doing his reputation of being an animal no favors.
Shadows thrashing around him, the crowd parted for Azriel in fear.
He had been a staunch advocate for this– a grand soirée between Prythian and empires on the Continent, a joining of peoples to put the past behind them. With Koschei destroyed and power wrestled, at last, from Briyallan's clutches, tenuous peace had settled between the humans and the fae. Under Queen Vassa's guidance, this gathering had been organized at her castle with every court of Prythian and the Continent invited to attend.
Azriel regretted it now, fully intend to go hide within his chambers until the event had finished for the night.
He chanced one last glance back, searching for Eris's vibrant red hair among the sea of muted browns and blondes. The Raskian official that'd been drooling over the Autumn High Lord now stood alone, looking forlorn. Eris? Gone.
With a huff, Azriel resumed the trek back to his room.
It had made his skin crawl to see the greasy human draping himself across Eris. Eris Vanserra was a High Lord– a title that deserved respect no matter how much Azriel despised the male that held it, and that human had been acting as if Eris were no more than a for-hire courtesan sent there to please.
Shortly after exiting the Great Hall, the hallway forked and Azriel veered left towards the Night Court's collection of rooms.
Back, his shadows whispered. The other way.
"What?" Azriel whispered.
The other way, they repeated.
Azriel backtracked, curious, and followed the hallway to the right.
His footsteps bounded off the carved limestone walls, sound bouncing ahead and leading the way. This must be the private wing, Azriel presumed, its walls less laden with ostentatious memorabilia. Thick clouds outside hid the moon from sight, leaving wall-mounted braziers providing the only pockets of dancing firelight to guide Azriel down the hallway.
Behind the tapestry, his shadows said.
As if on cue, a tapestry, as tall as him twice over, emerged from the darkness. It had a lush, hilly landscape sewed onto its surface. In the center, a murky black lake with a red winged bird gliding across its surface.
Azriel ripped back the side of the tapestry and found, hiding within an alcove, Eris.
Eris, who'd been leaning casually back against the stone-stacked wall, jolted up, brows shot high at the sight of Azriel. A lone ball of fire, like produced by Eris, hung in the air above him, gently illuminating the small space.
"How did you find me?" Eris spluttered.
"Waiting for someone?" Azriel growled. That's all this could be– a clandestine rendezvous with Raskian dignitary. Why else would Eris be sequestered away within the private wing of Vassa's palace.
"Not that I'm aware of?" Eris said rising to his full height, only an inch shy of Azriel.
Azriel scoffed in disbelief.
"Oh," Eris drawled, a coy smile spreading across his face. "Don't think I didn't see you watching me all night, shadowsinger. I could practically smell your jealousy from across the ballroom."
"Jealousy?" Azriel gaped in shock.
Eris continued, "You won't act on your desire for me but no one else can have me, is that it?"
"Desire?!" Azriel repeated in disbelief. "I desire you as much as I would a toad."
With a chuckle, Eris said, "You must be really attracted to toads."
Azriel growled and turned to leave.
"I am waiting for someone, actually." Eris's words stopped him in his tracks. "You know, I figured– what better way to strengthen relations with the human of the Continent than to... partake in relations with humans of the Continent."
Whipping around, aghast, Azriel searched Eris for any signs of deceit. "You're joking."
"I don't joke," Eris said haughtily. "You should leave. He'll be here soon and I don't need your presence ruining anything."
Azriel's gaze flickered down the hallway, he saw no one and heard no footsteps. Letting the tapestry drape closed behind him, Azriel stepped into the alcove.
Even with the tapestry down, he could still hear the echo of the crowd in the Great Hall.
All it took was two steps for Azriel to have Eris backed flat against the wall. A heartbeat later, his arm wrapped around the Autumn High Lord and pulled the male flush against him, capturing his lips in a searing kiss.
The first joining of their lips was slow, sucking, and exploratory. Eris tasted of cinnamon spiced liquor and sweet walnuts.
Soon, their manic longing caught up with the pace of the mouths.
Azriel's mind melted.
The only sensation he registered was the soft glide of Eris's lush lips against his own, dancing together in desperate desire. He swallowed the choked groan Eris released into his mouth as the male pressed every inch of their bodies together.
Why hadn't Azriel done this sooner?
His skin burned everywhere they touched, his heart galloped painfully in his chest.
Azriel needed more. Now.
Tilting his head to deepen the kiss, Azriel slid his tongue into Eris's mouth, memorizing his intoxicating taste.
Pulling back to catch his breath, Azriel asked between pants, "You said he's meeting you here?"
"Yes." Eris's pale skin was flushed a rosy pink.
"That's too bad for him." Azriel crept his hands under Eris's shirt to glide along his taut abdomen. "Because he's going to be very disappointed to find me fucking you up against this wall, instead."
Eris's voice was breathless, yet more composed than Azriel wished, as he said, "Against the wall? You're overconfident."
"No, I'm not." With a sturdy grip on the back of Eris's thighs, Azriel hiked the male up, thanking the Mother for centuries of training that made the lift feel effortless.
Wrapping Eris's legs securely around his waist, Azriel leaned in to the male's ear and said, "Tell me you want this."
Eris huffed but said nothing, mouth hinged slightly open and eyes glazed.
Azriel pressed tight into the crux of Eris's thighs and ground against the hardness he found there, managing to suppress a moan at the friction. Unlike him, Eris failed at holding back a whimper.
"Eris, I'm not doing anything until you beg." Azriel whispered before recapturing the male's mouth. They made out in silence, hips rocking against one another, original intention evaporated from Azriel's mind– his sole focus drawing more broken moans from Eris.
Pulling free tightly knotted laces, Azriel slid his hands inside Eris's waistband to grab two hand-fulls of the male's ass. As Azriel massaged the butter-soft skin, squeezing it to its limit, he'd occasionally slide an exploratory finger down to tease Eris's tightness. Every time his finger glided over, Eris's long legs would squeeze around Azriel's waist, using the force to pull their bodies closer.
On the fifth passover, Eris broke free from Azriel's lips, heaving, and begged, "Fuck me, Azriel. Please, fuck me."
"Yes," Azriel moaned eagerly in affirmation.
Shucking Eris's pants up his thighs so that it exposed enough of the male's ass, Azriel trailed his lips down the pillar of his pale neck, sucking deep bruises into the skin.
Fingers twisted in his hair as Eris rasped, "I said, fuck me."
In a haze, Azriel fumbled with a vial of oil his shadows deposited into his palm and made quick work of slicking up his fingers. He circled Eris's heat, egged on by the male's muttered encouragements. They kissed with manically, barely repressed smiles making it hard to maintain a rhythm. Just as he was about to dip a finger into Eris, Azriel paused.
Too late, with no forewarning from his shadows, Azriel registered the clack of footsteps in the hallway outside the tapestry. And, before he could do more than rip his mouth away and gape at Eris in shock, the tapestry was yanked back, flooding light from the hallway braziers into the alcove.
Shadows burst forth, surrounding Eris and blocking him from view.
Azriel dropped Eris from his arms, guiding his legs down so he didn't fall, and double checking that shadows shrouded him entirely, before turning to face the bewildered face of the Raskian dignitary.
The male stared at them, dumbstruck.
"Get out," Azriel growled, cobalt siphons flaring in warning.
That was all it took to send the Raskian scampering away, tapestry dropping to cloak them once more.
Azriel whipped to face Eris, shadows dissipating. "You were serious? You were actually meeting him here?"
"I told you, I don't joke," Eris replied.
Snarling, Azriel pressed Eris back into the wall, plundering his lips with white-hot kisses, set on erasing every thought of the Raskian male until all the existed in Eris's mind was Azriel.

A Spider's child
Nemesis, formerly known as Optimus and the Black Spider, has been living on the strangest of islands out in the middle of Lake Erie with three transforming robot dinosaurs brought to life with Sari's All Spark key, one of which supposedly their leader seemed like he has a bit of crush on the beastformer. Ever since Megatron was killed by Elita-1 and her crew with the help from that explosion, Nemesis has taken it as an opportunity to leave the Decepticons and become a neutral party so a name change was in order seeing as the Black Spider name was given to him by Shockwave and he wanted to distance himself from his past as a 'con as much as possible. The Dinobots were the ones who had given him his new name since he told them he didn't have a name so they gave him one.
Nemesis had decided to go to the mainland in order to lurk around to see what Elita and her crew really had to offer to see if he really should join them. It's not that he doesn't like the Dinobots he liked them well enough, it's just that they could get a little too much at times. He would also like to reconnect a little more with his past as an Autobot.
Nemesis made his way from his hideout, which had apparently once been home to a criminal called Meltdown who had abused the Dinobots during his stay which meant that Nemesis would be beating the living Pit out of him if they ever meet, to tell the Dinobots that he would be leaving for a bit. Nemesis found the three Dinobots roaming around the clearing in the middle of the island which was being covered by one of the Autobot Prowl's hologram devices. Nemesis knew that he already liked Prowl on the count of him keeping the Dinobots safe.
"Dinobots, I'm heading out to the mainland for a bit, I'll be back around midday!" he called out to them, "Grimlock you're in charge while I'm gone."
Before he could leave Swoop swooped down in front of him.
"Me, Swoop, would like to offer you, Nemesis, a ride to the mainland," said Swoop whilst pointing at Nemesis.
Before Nemesis could respond to Swoop's offer Grimlock in robot mode pushed Swoop to the ground.
"No, me Grimlock you take spider bot to the mainland!" declared Grimlock while pushing out his chest in pride and pointing to himself.
Snarl looked up at what his brothers were doing and simply shook his head and went back to sleep. It would take Nemesis a while to get used to the Dinobots treating him like this since back on the Decepticon warship he was treated as just a runt and science experiment, mostly the former since Shockwave was given a long term assignment by Megatron there was nobody to experiment on him. The Dinobots' hospitality was another point in Nemesis' book to trust and make him want to hurt anyone who dares hurt them.
In the end Swoop ended up dropping Nemesis off near the port. Nemesis decided that he would travel via underground passageways in order not to be spotted. He knew that Elita and Sari wouldn't freak out upon seeing him and attack him but he couldn't count on the natives not fainting upon seeing how grotesque he was and the other Autobots not attacking him on sight thinking that he was still a Decepticon. He only wanted to observe them not interact with them.
After a while of traveling in his altmode, if you could even call it an altmode, Nemesis came across what looked to be the ruins a battle. There were broken down machines that the organics used to complete everyday tasks littered all over the floor. Most of them didn't even looked destroyed just not powered on which confused him on why they were even down there in the first place.
After a while of looking around Nemesis began to hear faint noises of machary coming from underneath some rubble. The noises sounded like those that a newspark, the Cybertronian equivalent of a newborn baby, would make while in distress. Upon realizing that those were the sounds of a newspark Nemesis' parental instincts kicked in and took over while beginning to search the area for where the newspark might be.
Nemesis found the pieces of rubble that the newspark was underneath and began to dig them out. After a short while of digging Nemesis finally found the newspark. The newspark was mostly blue with gold highlights and red optics. Nemesis held the newspark closely to his chest and began rocking him from side to side in an attempt to calm them down, which seemed to have worked. The newspark immediately calmed down whilst being held by Nemesis. Soon the newspark fell asleep in his servos.
Nemesis looked down on the now sleeping newspark with a soft smile on his face. That was when it hit him, what was a newspark doing on Earth much else a former battleground. Elita was going to have some explaining to do. If the newspark was anyone of her crewmates' creation that they had abandoned he would 1) beat the everliving pit out of them and 2) he would most definitely not be joining Elita's team. But, for now he should head back to Dinobot island and prepare a place for the newspark to stay. He's sure that the Dinobots wouldn't mind having a baby sibling around.
