a half-metal machinist and an overgrown automaton is a fic exploring the rivalry of leshy and p03 if their domains of expertise were swapped (leshy as the scrybe of tech, and p03 as the scrybe of beasts): Leshy, a quirky machinist hailing from a steam-powered airborne temple of technology, is invited into the dilapidated woodland bunker of P03, a rusted wildlife research bot who's tired of being condescended to. The Scrybe of Technology is only expecting a card match, but P03's ambitions run far deeper…

We know the game and we're gonna play it

For the fourth week of Scrybruary. The Scrybes play The Sims. Also this takes place in an AU where everything is happy and canon is only convenient when it needs to be. And that's really all there is to say on the matter.

There's probably something to be said about the power of a Scrybe and the power they wield over their world for nothing but their own benefit. A game where you control the lives and deaths of mere mortals sounds perfect for such beings.

"...What are you doing, Grimora?"

The Cadaver turned towards the voice, bright yellow eyes meeting the Deity's swirling orange. She chuckled before gesturing him to join her side as she explained. Leshy bent down towards the screen, squinting at the bright light.

"Oh! Its a game Luke downloaded the other day. Said it might 'scratch that itch from the OLD_DATA or something.'"

She pointed to the monitor as she spoke. On screen was what looked like a young, human woman with a green diamond floating above her head, blissfully unaware of her arm clipping through the grey skirt she wore.

"You can create these characters and buildings and have them act however you'd like. I'll admit it has been entertaining so far, In fact I like how they depict the spirits of the undead."

"Yes, that does sound fairly entertaining but that is not quite what I meant."

He gently tapped on the screen thrice, the 'Sim' inside the computer smiled and waved at him. Leshy withdrew his hand, wiping the grime and technological 'germs' off his finger.

"Why are you playing this game on P03 of all things?"

"The other devices at our disposal wouldn't be able to run all these 'expansion packs' so all that left was our fellow Scrybe. Don't worry, We have been taking good care of its body while its gone."

"...'we?' I'm afraid I do not understand..."

The 'Sim' waved again. Leshy hesitantly waved back before realising-

"-What do you mean 'while its gone'?"

"Do not fret, Leshy. The bot will be back, bitterly complaining once it realises its escape cannot come to fruition."

The Wizard finally made his presence known, pulling up a chair next to his fellow Scrybes. Magnificus's presence didn't soothe the Beast's unease, if anything he felt more 'out of the loop' than he had before, he narrowed his eyes at the two.

"and how can you be so sure it hasn't escaped onto the internet?"

The Corpse and Green Mass exchanged knowing glances. Grimora chuckled as she turned back to the monitor, resuming rearranging her collection of 156 graves. Magnificus reclined into their seat before responding with a wink.

"Our dear 'advanced and far superior' peer has been caught by the young Carder's 'antivirus' software somehow... or so we've been told."

The freckled 'Sim' waved with a mischievous grin before returning to the game she was playing.

last week i posted my oneshot for scrybruary week 2! the theme for that week was backstory/first meeting, so i wrote up the first meeting between two of my swap scrybes! You can read it right here: Link

On a Cable-Covered Peak is a oneshot featuring my Magicks!P03 and Tech!Magnificus getting acquainted with each other: Under a blue moon…P03, a mox-powered alchemist looking to be acquainted with his contemporaries, is journeying north to meet the particularly reclusive Scrybe of Technology, Magnificus. When the weather is a bit harsher on P03's hardware than anticipated, he must rely on Magnificus to restore his circuitry…and finds himself quite a bit more endeared to the sleep-deprived bundle of wires than he anticipated.

it's finally time for the second-ever SCRYBRUARY! the february monthly challenge dedicated to creative written expression inspired by daniel mullins's Inscryption.

this year i presented a poll of potential weekly themes here on tumblr, and have selected the top four options for this year's event, arranged in ascending order of popularity! thank you so much to everyone who participated in the voting ^^

as usual the rules for this event are simple and loose; the only concrete guideline is that you must adhere to one or more of the above prompts for pieces written for the event! otherwise, you can engage however you're most comfortable; if you only want to write for the same prompt every week, or only have the bandwidth to write for one or two prompts during the event, or even aren't much of a writer and just want to illustrate for a fic you feel fits one of these prompts, go wild! this month is for fun, not for stress ^^

Kicking off Scrybruary with some alternate universe shenanigans! Whether you're swapping up the Scrybes or simply changing up who's responsible for what in the story, this week is made for those wacky what-ifs and juicy narrative shake-ups.

Week 2, February 8-14th: Backstory/First Meeting

Backstory is something we're given woefully little of in Inscryption! Did the Scrybes know each other prior to "arriving" at the archipelago? How did Goobert and the Angler's supposed rivalry start off? Not to mention the myriad of question marks when it comes to why so many of these characters are the way they are to begin with... This is the week to dive deep into the past and explore!

Week 3, February 15-21st: Day in the Life/Mundane

This week we kick back and celebrate the smaller things in life! Whether you use this week to kidnap the Scrybes into a quaint little coffee shop AU or just shed light on what Magnificus's students might do to unwind after a long day, it's all fair game as long as it's nothing out of the ordinary...

Week 4, February 22-29th: Fix-it Fic/Good Ending

Inscryption's characters all despise each other, and the ending is a bit of a downer! We all know this well, if the myriad of fix-it fics already out there are anything to go by...but for many, the well is in constant danger of running dry, and these characters deserve all the happy endings they can get! So now is the time to close out the month with a bit of repair and reconciliation.

surprise, i finally wrote up something for scrybruary! this one’s a slightly late entry for week 2, romance/friendship! in this case i went for romance ofc, i absolutely love p03ficus and was happy to have an excuse to try my hand at a more canon-compliant setting!

“The Rinse Cycle” takes place right after the act 1 reset, where everyone’s a bit on edge from prior events; particularly p03. he’s launched right into searching for the OLD_DATA, leaving any needed maintenance or self-care by the wayside. luckily, magnificus shows up to make him take a breather...and also to clean off all that grime and rust he’s been ignoring.

hey hey, it’s time for another monthly challenge: SCRYBRUARY! as the title implies, this challenge is more writing-based than inscryptober from a few months back. there’s quite a lot to work with within the fiction of inscryption, and while there’s quite a wealth of fic out there, there are certainly some crowd favorites! thus, our little character-based inscryption server on discord has come together to synthesize a selection of weekly prompts for fic creation!

as you can see, there are two potential prompts for each week; you can choose one or the other to follow, write separate fics for both, or combine them somehow!

how much writing you would like to do over the course of the month is entirely your prerogative; you can answer as many or as few of these prompts as you like, and you don’t need to feel beholden to the idea that each week is a ticking clock or a deadline!

if you’re already in the midst of a story, and you feel that you could apply one of these prompts to your newest chapter, feel free to do so! no one is limited to starting a new fic or oneshot for each and every one of these prompts

side note: on the 15th of the month, ao3 is hosting international fanworks day! their theme for that day is crossovers, so if our prompt for that week doesn’t strike you you may feel free to use that one instead!

Scrybruary 2023

Week 1: Feb 1-7th Worldbuilding/Character Study

This week encompasses any variety of fic that dives deep into Inscryption’s inner workings; that of its characters, setting, or both! There’s little to go off of when it comes to plot and worldbuilding, from the origins of act 2’s archipelago to why Goobert is so unfailingly loyal to Magnificus. Whether it’s motive or magic systems, cards or culture, this is the time to get creatively critical!

Week 2: Feb 8-14th Romance/Friendship

Yes, this is the obligatory Ship Week. But romance certainly isn’t the only kind of ship around! Should you feel so inclined, this week has just as much room for epic friendships and QPPs as it does for your standard OTP. Rarepairs are of course highly encouraged, especially when the fandom is already quite inundated with its crowd favorites; there are so many odd couples and unusual friends to explore! Speaking of which…

Week 3: Feb 15-21st Unlikely Duo/Day in the Limelight

There are many characters in Inscryption, and many of them have little to no interactions with each other. What sort of rapport might Luke and Magnificus form given the opportunity or Pike Mage and the Woodcarver? In the same vein, there’s plenty of singular characters that don’t get much focus either. What possesses the Dredger to take his job so seriously? How did the Angler get caught up in act 3’s events? This is the week to explore those oft-ignored loose threads of the game.

Week 4: Feb 22-28th Shitpost/Angst

Ending off the month with a pair of fanfic classics! Like all the prior themes, these can be taken separately or combined together into a tragicomic chimera. Let your mind wander into the deepest well of sorrow and regret, or into the wild untamed woods of pure crack; whatever suits your fancy! This is also a good week to tie in bits of any prior themes you may have skipped over, as well.
