A prediction for the future of NH and SS?
The similarities and differences between the moments that Naruto and Sasuke opened up to Hinata and Sakura, and they had their "chances" to generate sympathy in their respective love interests. Naruto opened up to Hinata in chapter 98, when he was unsure about his chances against Neji and Gaara in the second phase of the Chuunin Shiken and was secondarily sensitive to Hinata's situation, but his "opening up" with Hinata was not intentional, he just ended up opening up to her because he was emotionally vulnerable and insecure and found her by chance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he is still not at all kind to her at first, he acts with her typical rude attitude, but soon her guard is lowered and Hinata "gets her chance" to "generate sympathy" in Naruto.
Tumblr media
Hinata then opens up and exposes her feelings to Naruto, cheering him up briefly, but soon Naruto's low self-esteem returns to dominate her emotions, after all, Hinata is still not significant to Naruto.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the "key moment" occurs when he really exposes himself, and then the well-known Hinata's proud failure speech occurs. ----------------------------------------------------------------
And now comparing it to the similar moment between Sasuke and Sakura. How it starts: And after Kakashi defeated him in their brief exchange in chapter 6, he was frustrated and humiliated after losing, and had a brief moment of vulnerability.
Tumblr media
Sakura is the one who finds him, and despite the comical tone of the situation, Sakura cartoonishly faints again and leaves Sasuke confused by the whole situation…
Tumblr media
Sasuke is still sensitive to Sakura, and waits for her to wake up from her faint, even at the expense of his time in the bell test, Sasuke here is much more patient and sensitive than Naruto will be with Hinata.
Tumblr media
Sakura is hit and Sasuke soon regrets having been hard on Sakura, and again, gives Sakura a, "second opening" or "chance". (he has much more patience and complacency than Naruto, who only gave Hinata a single, narrow chance and then put her to the test right after.)
Tumblr media
Here, on this second opportunity, he really opens up, and talks about his feelings during the Uchiha downfall, and this is the "key moment" the "big chance" for Sakura to generate sympathy in Sasuke, but she is lost and doesn't know what to do …
Tumblr media
And Sakura realizes what's going on too late and doesn't respond to Sasuke. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ And the conclusions from this? Naruto and Hinata:
Tumblr media
Hinata despite having less openness and chances than Sakura, Naruto starts rudely with her and still doubting her opinion, Hinata manages to obtain Naruto's sympathy (still hearing a rude and unflattering comment from Naruto about his personal perception of her)
Tumblr media
She even generated sympathy in Naruto.
Tumblr media
He even wondered if she was watching him, after winning Neji in chapter 105, demonstrating that she gained some value to him. ----------------------------------------------- Sakura and Sasuke:
Tumblr media
His second chance ends and Sasuke gets frustrated with Sakura again, Sakura had more chances than Hinata, Sasuke was much more patient, sensitive and compliant than Naruto, but Sakura still lost her chance.

No matter how you look at it, this just seems uncomfortable. Is this what a boobs and butt pose looks like from the other side? [Character is Eco from Dragonar Academy and the picture is from the OP CD single “Shiken nante iranai.”
Yes, I think.  This is a rare "boobs and butt pose from the other side".  She looks shockingly happy for being in the middle of getting sucked into a black hole.
Also, I just realized that's a woman behind her and the white things are her vacuum-sealed breasts.

How to use やっぱり ( = yappari ) (Mini Lesson) – Maggie Sensei
Expressions, JLPT N2, Mini Lesson from No.124
How to use やっぱり ( = yappari ) (Mini Lesson)
December 14, 2010 23 Comments
Tumblr media
マギー先生の頭の中をスキャンしてみたら…
= Maggie Sensei no atama no naka wo sukyan shite mitara…
= We “scanned” Maggie’s brain and…
Today’s word is 「やっぱり! 」=「Yappari! 」
It is a colloquial way of saying やはり = yahari and it means “I thought so!”  or  “I knew it! “
If something happens as we suspected, we say “やっぱり” (=Yappari)!
1) We say it when we hear something that we had expected we’d hear or are unsurprised to hear.
Ex. 「マギーは彼が好きなんだって。」
=Maggie wa kare ga sukinan datte.
=I heard Maggie liked him.
「やっぱり!」/「やっぱりね!」
= Yappari! /Yappari ne!
= I knew it!
***
Ex. やっぱり、犯人は彼だったんだ。
= Yappari hannin wa kare dattannda.
= I knew he was the criminal.
***
Ex. やっぱり思った通りだ。
= Yappari omotta toorida.
= I knew it. / That’s exactly what I thought.
***
Ex. やっぱりそうだったの?
= Yappari soudatta no?
= I knew it!(It’s a rhetorical question in Japanese but actually means you expected something.)
***
Ex. やっぱりマギーは来なかったね。
= Yappari Maggie wa konakatta ne.
= As we expected, Maggie didn’t come, huh?
2) When you assure your opinion or simply emphasize your opinion, really, indeed
Ex. やっぱり彼はかっこいいよね。
= Yappari kare wa kakkoiiyone.
= He is really cool! (Just as I had thought.)
Ex. やっぱりあなたじゃなくちゃだめ! (female talk)
= Yappari anata ja nakucha dame!
= It has to be you. (Just as I have been thinking.)
Ex. やっぱり日本語を勉強するならマギー先生のサイトだよね。
= Yappari nihongo wo benkyou suru nara Maggie Sensei no saito dayone.
= If you want to study Japanese, it has to be Maggie Sensei’s site! (As I have thought.)
3) When you change your mind, on second thought
Ex. ねえ、スタバに行かない? やっぱりやめた!明日、試験があるから勉強しないと。
= Nee, sutaba ni ikanai?  Yappari yameta! Ashita shiken ga aru kara benkyou shinaito.
= Hey, you wanna go to Starbucks? On second though, I won’t go. I have exams tomorrow so I have to study.
And if you change your mind again,
Ex. やっぱり行く!!試験なんてどうでもいいや。
= Yappari iku!! Shiken nante doudemo iiya.
= I change my mind. I AM going! I don’t care about exams.
Note :
やはり = yahari
Tumblr media
There is even more casual form of やっぱり=yappari
Tumblr media
Ex. やっぱりそうか ! ( = Yappari souka! ) = I knew it.
Tumblr media
Ex. やっぱりね!(=Yappari ne!)  I knew it. I thought so.
:rrrr: やっぱね! = Yappane.
Ex. やっぱり夏はビールだよね。
= Yappari natsu wa biiru dayone!
=  There is nothing better than beer in the summer.
Tumblr media
=Yappa natsu wa biiru ssho! (very colloquial)
So can you read what in my brain?
*遊 = yuu /  遊ぶ = asobu = to play
*食 = shoku / 食べる=taberu = to eat
*休 = kyuu / 休む= yasumu  =  to get rest
*秘 = hi = 秘密 = himitsu = secret
マギー先生より = Maggie Sensei yori = From Maggie Sensei
私の秘密知りたい?
= Watashi no himitsu shiritai?
= Do you want to know my 秘密 = himitsu = secret?? ***
Will you be my Patron?
I appreciate your support!  サポートありがとう!
This rules. I'm gonna learn Japanese and go to Nihon. I hope this site is a good resource for me!!!!!!

Forgot to add the question bit to the last ask but basically how plausible do you think something like that is to be a significant thing? Either in the sapir whorfy way of language means people conceptualise failure differently, or the reverse where because that culture conceptualises failure differently for other reasons that's why the language doesn't have a word for it?
In reference to this.
I don't really know, because the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis has basically not been tested (strong Sapir-Whorf is probably unfalsifiable, but weak Sapir-Whorf might be something you could investigate empirically), but my intuition is "there's no effect". I really doubt that what loanwords a language borrows is determined with anything like this semantic granularity.
So, ok, Bengali speakers have borrowed the English word "fail" to describe failing a test. I strongly suspect this is related to like, the education system, or media or something—basically exposure to the English word in that context. And English is a prestige language, so people want to borrow English words for all kinds of shit. In Japanese, the native word for test is shiken, but you can also use the English loanword tesuto. Why? I don't think any particular reason, really. It just caught on somehow. Why did English borrow the word amateur from French? Because French culture has more hobbyists? I somewhat doubt it.
Moreover, I doubt that Bengali speakers generally know English well enough to pick up on the subtleties in the semantics of English "fail", and judge that those semantic subtleties are better suited to "failing a test" than whatever the native Bengali word it. That seems... unlikely to me.
Like, OK, I want to clarify: I'm not saying your sister's research is bunk. For any given loanword (or really, even linguistic feature), if you're lucky, you might have enough data to track its spread like a virus. You know, "when did it enter the language, with which groups did it first get popular, etc. etc.". And I'm sure there are interesting sociological observations to be made here, on the micro level. Like this is a bunch of humans interacting, so of course the spread is going to be affected by human social processes, if you're looking at it with that much granularity. I don't doubt that at all. The thing that I doubt is that usage of loanwords can tell you something deep and abiding about how people from different cultures think about things, rather than just being related to a bunch of basically incidental and contingent facts of history.
