Birdclan

I've seen people talk about their clangen clans, and I've just started a new one, so you can follow along about them :) The following are the starting cats of Birdclan, the cats without their roles given are either an apprentice or a warrior (I've added their personalities too);

Sleetstar (Leader, troublesome), Slightash (Deputy, childish), Frogpelt (Medicine cat, wise), Birdfrost (childish), Ashenstrike (strict), Yellowdust (patient), Skipfish (charismatic), Creekpaw (faithful), Amberpaw (playful) and Blotchpaw (patient).

MOON 1

Sleetstar is Blotchpaw's mentor, Slightash is Amberpaw's mentor and Yellowdust is Creekpaw's mentor.

Only one of the two are good mentors, I know it.

Sleetstar feels gloomy (he's pretty much an annoying old man-)

Sleetstar takes Amberpaw on a patrol, when they catch the scent of a fox - THEY SCARED BABY FOXES-

I love foxes.

Anyway-

Ashenstrike and Birdfrost just laze around.

Weeddapple joins the clan, and on her first patrol, she shoos off a rogue.

Also, she's a very pretty dilute calico-

Moon 2

Creekpaw is now Creeksplash!

And he looks like Firestar-

Sleetstar and Skipfish chase a badger off their territory.

Birdclan gets threatened by Slopeclan (probably making fun of them for naming their clan after prey-)

Weeddapple and Birdfrost approach a prey rich, deep ravine. Everything is fine.

Ashenstrike and Slightash come across a large rat, and they plan to eat the rat apparently-

Moon 3

Sleetstar has lost a life to old age, at 153 moons.

Amberpaw is now Amberpatch (and probably traumatised from her mentor's death-)

Blotchpaw doesn't like Creeksplash.

Ashenstrike is talking sh*t about Blotchpaw-

Creeksplash had an argument with Slightash

Blotchpaw and Ashenstrike smell a fox; and drive the fox and her cubs away.

Sleetstar and Birdfrost see a badger den ahead; they chase the badger from Birdclan territory to Slopeclan.

A LONER BRINGS KITS

The loner's name is Algestem, and his kits are Redkit, Nightkit, Baykit and Moorkit.

Amberpatch, Skipfish and Weeddapple hunt in another clan's territory.

Moon 4

Slightash retired (old lady-)

I'm gonna bully these cats.

Yet another fox and her cubs get driven away. I'm starting to think it's the same fox, over and over again.

Algaestream and Weeddapple come across a house while hunting; the hunt is successful and twolegless.

Blotchpaw and Creeksplash missed the prey, probably arguing.

Moon 5

Birdfrost has decorated himself with feathers after playing with them.

Blotchpaw is now Blotchleaf.

Skipfish adopts abandoned kits, and proceeds to have her own kit with Birdfrost.

I just noticed how pretty Skipfish is. What a pretty girl.

I'm assuming Bearkit is Skip and Bird's bio kit, bc he looks like Skipfish. Skykit and Morningkit, both toms, are adopted.

A patrol scares the fish away while hunting.

Birdfrost had a vision from StarClan; Amberpatch, Skipfish and Weeddapple talk him through it.

Story:

From the moment they entered the world, Mothkit and Skykit were inseparable. Seeing the siblings apart was a rare occurrence, and they vowed to do whatever was necessary to support the other when they had been wronged.

Indeed, the normally shy and sweet Skypaw was Mothpaw's most fiercest defender when the latter came out as genderfluid. In turn, Mothpaw valiantly stuck up for their sister, turning down cats who asked them out solely because they had bullied Skypaw in the past.

Their relationship stayed just as strong into warriorhood, and it wasn't long before Skywing found a mate of her own in the deputy's nephew, Thornnose. The two were head over heels in love, but Motheyes didn't trust Thornnose. He had always been too much of a stuck-up brat. Sure enough, Motheyes's suspicions would be confirmed eight moons later, when, while out on patrol, they caught Thornnose cuddling with Mistyspring.

To make matters even worse, when they brought the two before the Clan to confess, Mistyspring admitted to being pregnant with Thornnose's kits! Skywing was inconsolable, refusing to leave the warrior's den. Motheyes had to literally shove pieces of prey down Skywing's throat just to get her to eat.

Even when Skywing was finally able to step out of the warrior's den, she was a shell of her former self, refusing to say a word and refusing to go near the nursery, where Mistyspring was now nursing her and Thornnose's kits, Rabbitkit and Rosekit.

Seeing the happy family snuggle in the shade, then seeing Skywing struggle to eat prey without breaking into sobs, made Motheyes's heart burn with anger.

They vowed that Thornnose and Mistyspring would pay. They didn't get their chance for revenge until soon after Rabbitpaw and Rosepaw had become apprentices. Thornnose and Mistyspring had gone on a walk for some long-overdue alone time, and Motheyes took the chance to follow them.

They caught up to them by the edge of CliffClan territory, sharing tongues. Motheyes didn't hesitate for a single second, immediately bursting out of their hiding place and slamming into Mistyspring, sending her careening over the edge of the cliff, a sick crack following shortly after.

The normally loud and confident Thornnose was reduced to stunned silence as he stared at his mate's broken body lying at the bottom of the cliff. He looked up at Motheyes to ask them why they were doing this. Motheyes simply responded "Isn't it obvious? I'm doing this for Skywing,” before lunging at Thornnose and knocking him over the edge as well.

He landed right next to Mistyspring, and Motheyes saw him put his paw around her body just before the light in his eyes dimmed out.

Filled to the brim with satisfaction, Motheyes turned to head back to camp. But before they could revel in their victory anymore, two tiny blurs leaped out of the bushes, and Motheyes felt two tiny sets of claws sink into their neck, ripping it apart. The last thing they heard as their vision went dark was Rabbitpaw and Rosepaw screaming out for their mommy and daddy. At least it put a smile on their face.

--Skywing was horrified when she learned what Motheyes had done, she hated Thornnose and Mistyspring for what they did to her, but she's also a major pacifist and didn't want it to go this far. She probably becomes a mother figure for Rabbitpaw and Rosepaw afterwards.

Moon 1 : Newleaf : Year 2

Rowanheart has a litter of four kits with an unnamed cat; Lizardkit, Skykit, Sandkit, and Slatekit. Lizardkit and Skykit die soon after birth.

Beetlepaw, Lavenderpaw, and Tawnypaw all pass their assessments and travel to the Star Hollow to receive their warrior names. They are named Beetletail, Lavenderbranch, and Tawnypelt, respectively.

Acornkit, Flickerkit, and Poppypaw reach 6 moons and become Acornpaw, Flickerpaw, and Poppypaw. They are apprenticed to Beetletail, Rowanheart, and Dead, respectively.

A senior cat, Leopardmoon, is let into the clan as an elder. She is thankful.

Midnightclan; Moon 2

Cavestar stared out over the camp, sheltered by cave walls, intertwining vines and the occasional thicket of weaved brambles and branches. Midnightclan camp was beautiful, no cat could deny. Cavestar couldn’t enjoy the view though, not with his troubled mind. He stretched, muscles rippling under his dark brown pelt, striped with thick black stripes, before he started down from the ledge that held his den.

With a thud, Cavestar landed on the floor of camp, longfurred tail drifting along the dusty ground and he padded forward. There was something bothering him. Was this a good idea? This clan? He recalled the day he stood before his former leader, calling for cats to join him and leave the wretched place. Few had dared join him. He shook his head. Of course, his former clan was… bad to say the least, but there had been order. Cavestar lifted his yellow-green gaze from the ground and looked over his cats as he slowly walked by. How could he ever protect them all?

He passed Branchdapple, who was watching over Bluffkit and Skykit. He slowed, though he wasn’t moving at all fast before, to hear what they were talking about.

“Bluffkit, how can you NOT be excited?” Skykit mewed, “You’re going to be an apprentice next moon! If it were me, I’d be bouncing off the walls with excitement!”

A purr of amusement escaped Branchdapple. “You already are Skykit!”

It was true, the gray she-kit was hopping around the brown tabby warrior and her white and gray denmate with unrestrained excitement. She fumbled a bit at Branchdapple’s comment and gave the warrior a sheepish grin.

Bluffkit however, didn’t seem all that enthused. “I know Skykit… but I’ll be so lonely! I’ll be the only apprentice in the clan.”

“Don’t think of it like that Bluffkit, think of it like… you’ll be the first ever apprentice of Midnightclan! That’s a big thing! Right Branchdapple?” Skykit turned her blue gaze to the brown warrior, but she was focused on their leader.

“Cavestar! I didn’t notice you! You’d think I would have heard you coming considering those big paws of yours!” A teasing smile played on her face, and Cavestar returned it with a chuckle.

“I suppose that would be the assumption, wouldn’t it?”

Skykit had stopped to look at Cavestar, enthusiasm replaced by a nervous smile. Bluffkit nodded politely to the leader, still not over the apprehension of the lonely apprentice-den.

Cavestar nodded to the group, and started off again, lumbering along. He would have to choose a mentor for Bluffkit. But who? There were several experienced warriors in Snipclaw, Drydapple, and Wildpelt, but how could he know for sure that they were right for Bluffkit? A cat’s mentor could shape a lot about them. He frowned. He wasn’t sure what he thought of himself being in such a position of power.

Cavestar’s ear twitched as he heard Wildpelt and Nutback, his deputy, talking. They were lazing in a rare spot of sun, apparently done with their duties for the day. Hazelspot had her head rested on Nutback’s… well, back. The medicine cat wasn't paying attention to the conversation, and seemed to be lost in thought, though likely not as deep as Cavestar’s by the look on her face.

“Who do you think Cavestar will choose to mentor Bluffkit?” Nutback asked Wildpelt.

“I’m not sure. You never can be too sure with these things.” The older calico she-cat had her white paws neatly tucked under her body. “I’m sure whoever he chooses will be the right cat though”

Nutback nodded then mewed, “When do you think we’ll have more kits in the clan? I mean, I know we’ve only been an official clan for two moons, but I miss having little paws running around!”

“It would also be good for the clan’s expansion. I doubt Torrentclan will soon forget what we did anytime soon… we need more paws if we’re to properly defend ourselves… that being said I’m not sure when exactly we’ll have more kits.. But I’d like to have some myself.”

Nutback and Hazelspot’s ears perked with interest, perhaps the light brown medicine cat was listening after all. “Really?” The gray deputy meowed with interest. “Is there any cat you’d like to have them with?” A mischievous purr escaped from her throat.

Wildpelt shook her head with a small smile. “No, no cat has caught my eye yet. I’d just like to have kits. I’m getting older and it’ll be harder to care for them if I’m an elder. I’d just like to have kits before I retire.”

Nutback nodded. “Well, I’m sure either Cavestar or Acornspring would be happy to surrogate.”

Cavestar turned from the conversation. He liked Wildpelt, but perhaps not like that. He continued across the camp before the thought crossed his mind. There were only three toms in the clan, one of whom was a kit. Cavestar frowned again. He might have to take a mate if the clan was going to grow, even if the idea didn’t appeal.

He continued, an odd squirming in his stomach. He shook his head and finally decided to sit down. He looked up. Across the camp from him was Snipclaw, fixing a patch in the walls with brambles. The white and brown she-cat turned as Drydapple passed, and meowed a friendly hello, which the dilute tortie she-cat returned.

Cavestar's ear twitched. He hadn't even considered checking the walls. He shook his head. How could his clan expect him to lead them well if he couldn't remember to make sure the basic tasks were done? Perhaps he had bit off more than he could chew.

Approaching pawsteps drew his eyes upwards. The fluffy body of Drydapple was before him, her pale yellow eyes staring intently at him.

"You seem troubled." She mewed as she settled on her gray haunches. "What's wrong?"

Cavestar looked at her then sighed. "Is this a good idea? There are so few of us, we have a powerful enemy in Torretclan, and I'm inexperienced. I was never a deputy. How can I make sure this clan is safe?"

Drydapple blinked then rolled her eyes. "You're too hard on yourself Cavestar. You're plenty qualified to lead us. Just look at you and Nutback." The two cats looked across camp at the deputy, still chatting with Wildpelt. "She's energetic, sneaky, and I'd say a little unqualified." Drydapple sniffed before continuing. "Leaders like Riverstar will choose cats who will give their undying loyalty to their leader, with barely a thought of their own; those leaders want cats like Wildpelt. But Nutback, she's always been a rather outspoken she-cat. She'll question you, keep you in line. You'll learn from each other. You make the perfect pair."

Cavestar felt flattered. "I.. thank you Drydapple."

She nodded. "Now about your other worries. They're valid that's for sure. We're still small and vulnerable, but that's expected. You can't expect these things to be perfect immediately."

Cavestar slowly nodded, shuffling his pale paws in the dirt. "I needed that Drydapple, thank you."

The gray and cream she-cat nodded before mewing "Now, if you don't mind I need to make dirt. Scuse me."

Cavestar shifted out of the way, not realizing that he had been blocking the dirtplace entrance. He stood, and shook out his fur, he could do this.

A rustling at the camp entrance made him turn. The pale ginger tail of Acornspring, Cavestar's former apprentice, appeared in the tunnel. The young tom stepped back, head down, pulling a very large rabbit into camp.

Everyone turned to look with awe, and Cavestar felt a swell of pride rise in his chest. Prey was running well, the weather was good. They would survive. Midnightclan was thriving.

My #1 post of 2022

So @collabwithmyself‘s Ace Attorney Warriors au has activated the “must draw cats” sleeper agent in my brain. (Idk how many of you have followed my online trail, but there are almost 10 years worth of old art on places like DeviantArt where I drew nothing but cats that entire time). So, I decided to have a go at drawing some of the cats listed in the allegiance, but weren’t actually drawn yet so they didn’t have designs.

Here we have the current nursery population of Stoneclan (defense attorneys). Overall pretty happy with how this picture turned out and how the designs look. I have a better design idea for Morningkit (Klavier), that would make him look more like his brother, but this picture was done before I got that so it’s fine for now. Also I know I said I wanted to do cats without designs but Moonkit (Athena) did have one already and I wasn’t going to change it. I hope I did her well. It wasn’t easy picking out oranges that matched from my collection of colored pencils.

Some character ideas/notes under read more if you’re interested, also the full page pic of my sketchbook I took: (Disclaimer before going in though - this isn’t my au. These are just my own ideas about theoretically what could happen. Without confirmation/a full story from the creator, these are not to be treated as though they will happen.)

Overall: Moonkit and Morningkit were the only two born into the clans. Skykit and Sunkit came later, after they were already a few moons old. By the beginning of the story, the kits are pretty close to becoming apprentices, which is a good thing because Moondance is the sole queen in the nursery and is ready to return to her normal medicine cat duties full-time again. Morningkit is undoubtedly the leader of this troop of kits, or at least he’s the more confident of the bunch. Sunkit is certainly the loudest, but also the one least likely to get caught up in mischievous antics unless it’s to scold the group by telling them how ridiculous they’re being. Moonkit is very high energy and playful, always willing to go on an adventure. Skykit is the most passive of the group, less willing to lead a charge, but just along for the ride.

Moonkit/paw/storm (Athena): Moonkit is the daughter of the Stoneclan medicine cat. I’m thinking that after the clans stopped believing in their warrior ancestors and Starclan, that they removed some of the more “problematic” or just plain dumb parts of the warrior code such as the rules about medicine cat relationships. Moondance (Metis) probably mated with like a loner so the father of her kit is very much not in the picture. The litter with Moonkit wasn’t very big (probably with only like a second kit that was stillborn), but the time and energy of being a single mother was taking a toll on her. Thankfully, her apprentice Blackpaw (Simon) and his sister/Moondance’s friend Swiftquill (Aura) have taken quite an interest in helping her care for her daughter. Blackpaw in particular has made it a point of pride to help protect his mentor’s kit and makes sure she is being well cared for.

Morningkit/paw/song (Klavier): So in this, Honeythroat (Kristoph) and Morningkit are biological full brothers, just from distinct litters. I’m thinking their father passed before Morningkit’s litter was born, and their mother passed after. Unlike Moonkit, Morningkit was part of a larger litter. I’m thinking that shortly after the litter was born, his mother got very sick with an upper respiratory infection and the whole family (mother and kits) was put into quarantine. Moondance wasn’t allowed to help their treatment because of her being pregnant/a new mother herself. Not that it would’ve helped much anyway, there wasn’t much anyone could do. Morningkit was the sole survivor of the infection, a miracle that he made it out okay and had no damage to his voice. He was still very young so was given to Moondance as a foster. Honeythroat took particular interest in the nursery kits after Morningkit’s recovery and has become a staple to see around the nursery, doting on his brother or dispensing wisdom to the others. I’m thinking that part of Honeythroat and Morningkit’s strained relationship has to do with how overprotective and overbearing his brother becomes.

Skykit/paw/spot (Clay): Skykit wasn’t born in the clans, but was the child of a loner cat who lived near to the Stoneclan territory. He was found as the survivor of his litter by a Stoneclan patrol after their mother left to find them food and didn’t come back (she was likely hit by a car). He was in dire shape when he was brought back, but bounced back pretty quickly. Moondance didn’t need to take a full-time mother role for Skykit since he was already at the age where he could eat fresh kill but he still does snuggle with her and the other kits at night.

Sunkit/paw/call (Apollo): No one knows where Sunkit came from, and he’s not willing/able to tell them. It was quite the surprise when a small kitten charged into Stoneclan camp one morning. He was old enough to eat prey, but still tiny enough that it didn’t look like his small legs should’ve carried him that far. His scent was unfamiliar to the clan cats who couldn’t recognize it more than it being from “quite far away”. He didn’t really ask, more demanded, to be allowed to stay.

Concluding notes/ideas about story: Shortly into the beginning of the story, these four are made apprentices of Stoneclan. Moonpaw is mentored by Swiftquill, Morningpaw is mentored by Bushpelt (Raymond), Skypaw is mentored by Darkpelt (Hammond) then later (because *cough* reasons) by Whiskerstep (Grossberg), and Sunpaw is mentored by Honeythroat. Something happens (not entirely sure what), early into their training that convinces Morningpaw to leave Stoneclan and join Thornclan. The other apprentices are hurt by this, especially Sunpaw who sees this as a total betrayal. Surprisingly, his brother, Honeythroat, isn’t all too worried about his little brother leaving and in fact rationalizes it as a good thing because it will help strengthen ties between the two clans. The UR-1 incident is still a thing that happens, closely to when the three remaining Stoneclan apprentices are to become warriors. Moondance is killed by a rogue cat (the Phantom) and her daughter is the one to find her mother’s body. I’m thinking that instead of putting himself on death row for the murder of Moondance, that Blackquill instead leaves Stoneclan to hunt down the Phantom himself, leaving Stoneclan without a medicine cat. Swiftquill places a lot of her grief/hurt over Moondance’s death and her brother’s absence onto her apprentice. Moonpaw doesn’t have a good time much at all. This is where a lot devolves into my own crack theory ideas of where the story could project and that involves Moonclan and Stoneclan joining into one clan by where the ending of Bridge to the Turnabout would be... And involves Sagepaw (Maya) being made into the first Starclan appointed clan leader in a long time so she’s Sagestar now. Goldenheart (Phoenix) is her deputy, and she has Iriscloud (Iris) fill in as medicine cat. This then leads into the case with Goldenheart trying to help a group of loner cats (the Gramayres) solve the death of their leader. Thornclan gets involved and young Morningpaw catches Goldenheart trying to use faulty evidence to defend one of them (Zak) and calls him out on it. It doesn’t help that other cats in this case begin disappearing as well. Goldenheart runs away into exile (disbarment), and Morningpaw is made into a warrior, Moningsong. If there was to be a story picked up about these characters, I can see it beginning at the start of what would be AA4. Sunpaw is now Suncall, and as a newly made warrior he’s trying to navigate the hardships of warrior life in this newly arranged clan as he discovers dark secrets lurking behind some of the tightest corners. And a mysterious young cat who calls herself Magicpaw (Trucy) comes to him with a request: to help protect her father.

I Read Leopardstar's Honor So You Don't Have To: A Review (Not Spoiler Free)

Oh Leopardstar. A cat who has long divided the fanbase as a leader beloved by some and despised by others. After years of waiting (for some) she was finally given her own super edition. In a word it was... underwhelming.

Introduction:

The book opens during Leopardstar's kithood days. The first scene is adorably heartwarming- readers are treated to Leopardkit and her denmates playing the warriors version of hide and seek, and there are some absolutely adorable moments here, such as Crookedjaw helping Leopardkit escape the seeker by whisking her away on his back, and Mudfur doting on his daughter. The scene takes a sharp turn when Skykit, one of Leopardkit's denmates, lures her away from the group to shove her head underwater and berate her for giving away Skykit's hiding place in the last round of hide and seek. Skykit's actions are startlingly cruel here, as she tells Leopardkit that she's a rotten kit that killed her own mother and that she is doomed to the dark forest like all the other murderers. This understandably disturbs and traumatizes Leopardkit, and when she speaks to her father about it, Mudfur reassures her that she is good, and that Brightsky came to him in a dream to say that Leopardkit will one day save RiverClan. Leopardkit latches on to this dream, and the book follows her through relatively disjointed moments in her life as she tries to live up to her destiny.

Pacing:

The pacing of the book is an absolute nightmare. We don't spend long enough in any one part of Leopardstar's life to see her have any meaningful interactions with other cats, and thus the majority of the relationships she has seem surface level at best, forced at worse, with Whiteclaw being a notable exception. She spends maybe 3 chapters as a kit, 3 as an apprentice, 3 as a warrior, 2 as a mentor, and so on. As a result, we don't actually get the opportunity to see Leopardstar learning or struggling in a meaningful way at any point. We're TOLD she's a hard worker, that she's dedicated and loyal, but the book gives you little chance to actually see it. The book slows down long enough to force an almost love story with Frogtail, which Leopardstar ultimately gives up on to focus on her work, but then a few chapters later Frogtail is dead and it's back to jumping around through her life.

The book really suffers from a lack of side characters and relationships to help things feel connected. The only real through line is this silly dream from Mudfur-not even an official prophecy- that Leopardstar focuses on to the exclusion of all else. Compare this to Crookedstar's Promise and Bluestar's Prophecy- while both books feature a greater destiny that the characters focus on throughout the book, they are given the chance to develop meaningful relationships that last for large chunks of the book. Bluestar has her relationship with her sister and her rivalry with Thistleclaw, and even her friendship with Thrushpelt, all of which allow her story to feel genuine and naturally lend themselves to interesting subplots. Crookedstar has his relationship with Mapleshade, his romance with Willowbreeze, his desire to prove himself to his mother- again, all things that make him feel like a well rounded, multifaceted character. Leopardstar has her dream, and ONLY her dream. None of her friendships last more than a few chapters before the other character is killed off. Her most meaningful relationship, with her apprentice and adopted son Whiteclaw, has the potential to round out Leopardstar's character, but Whiteclaw's fate has been predetermined. We all know he's going to die in the gorge because we see it happen in Fire and Ice. After Whiteclaw's death, Leopardstar briefly has a compelling relationship with Silverstream after she discovers her relationship with Graystripe. Silverstream and Leopardstar have opposing priorities of love and duty, and the interactions between them are an interesting insight into both characters. Silverstream actively rebukes Leopardstar's mindset and challenges her priorities, something that would have been invaluable in making Leopardstar's choice to join Tigerstar seem more consequential. But Silverstream too is doomed to die, and by the time the book reaches its climax, Mudfur is the only cat left to challenge Leopardstar's choices. Instead of letting the rift between father and daughter build, Leopardstar has no problem simply banishing her father and medicine cat for disagreeing with her. No one that she cares about is left to challenge her for her decisions, and thus there are no real stakes to the choices she makes. Sure, Stonefur dies and its awful, but the book doesn't bother to develop any real friendship or camaraderie between the two, so it doesn't feel as impactful as it should. The book concludes with Leopardstar understanding that she's wrong and Mudfur convincing her that she's going to save the Clan from the disaster she helped create. At the very least, Leopardstar seems to understand the problems with this and points out that it's not really her saving the Clans, its Firestar. This is completely true, as she has no role in Tigerstar's downfall and no role in stopping Scourge. The best that can be said for Leopardstar is that she doesn't get in the way of Firestar here.

She faces no real struggles aside from her father's doubt as to her ability to lead, a dynamic already witnessed between Brambleberry and Crookedstar and done much better.

Awful editing:

This book suffers from an almost unbelievable lack of care on the part of the editors, with big chunks of text very obviously cut and pasted to different parts of the story without any effort to edit out nonsequitors. The most painful instance of this revolves around Stormpaw and Featherpaw's apprenticeship. In one scene, Leopardstar comments on the fact that Primrosekit and Pikekit will be made apprentices any day (Reedkit is inexplicably absent here, and Perchkit seems to have died offscreen though it is never mentioned) and notes that Stormkit and Featherkit still have their kit fluff and look tiny next to their older denmates. A couple paragraphs later, we see Featherkit and Stormkit being apprenticed to Mistyfoot and Stonefur, in a paragraph that EXPLICITLY STATES that it's the very next day. The other kits have mysteriously been apprenticed already. Boulder and Jaggedtooth of ShadowClan are inexplicably present at the ceremony, despite there being no mention of their arrival at any point and Leopardstar refusing Tigerstar's offer to join their two Clans together the day before. A few pages later (yes, literally just pages later, that's how atrocious the pacing is) we cut to a battle between RiverClan and ThunderClan at the Sunningrocks, where Stonefur and Mistyfoot's parentage is revealed. Leopardstar doesn't actually hear this, but she does overhear them discussing it in the most painfully forced way possible moments later. Leopardstar finds herself absolutely HORRIFIED that she's apprenticed two half-Clan cats to half-Clan mentors.... and then a few chapters later, after forming TigerClan, Tigerstar asks her if she still intends to make Mistyfoot and Stonefur mentors to Featherkit and Stormkit despite their parentage, to which Leopardstar responds that they are still loyal RiverClan warriors. Yes, I'm serious.

Leopardstar's character:

This super edition is nothing but a showcase of the absolute worst aspects of Leopardstar as a character. Throughout the book she is shown as racist, battle hungry, self-centered, foolish, and utterly lacking in compassion or even pity for any Clan other than her own. She is constantly making racist generalizations about cats from other Clans, actively wishes for WindClan's downfall, sides with Tigerstar simply because Fireheart is a kittypet, and, perhaps most disturbingly, tries to murder Fireheart in cold blood because of his kittypet background. This book literally does nothing to endear the reader to Leopardstar, it makes her out to be the most despicable, honorless cat imaginable. And honestly, if you're not a Leopardstar fan, I think that's one of the most compelling things about this book. The desire to see what atrocities Leopardstar would commit next was what kept me interested in the story, honestly it was the only reason I finished it. There was something morbidly fascinating about watching a character so self absorbed and lacking in compassion interact with the world around her. It was enjoyable in a way to see a character so deeply set in the beliefs that the series has repeatedly established as wrong time and time again. Pacing and editing aside, this difference in philosophy is a breath of fresh air after the same recycled plotlines and moral messages that the series has been using for years. This book isn't going to make you like Leopardstar, but it is going to make you love to hate her.

What the book did right:

While there were very few positives to the book, it wasn't completely lacking in value. The book succeeded in developing a deeply meaningful relationship between Whiteclaw and Leopardstar that, thankfully, wasn't a romance. Their mother/son and mentor/apprentice relationship does a good job at setting up Leopardstar's grudge against ThunderClan over Whiteclaw's death as we see it play out in the first arc. Honestly, Leopardstar as a character would have been served far better if this had just been a novella detailing the relationship between these two. That was probably the only real thing of value in the book, honestly. Aside from that, Frogtail and Leopardstar's relationship, while I personally found it completely unnecessary, addressed a topic I've been hoping to see in warriors for a while now-- two characters who love each other but decide that the things they want out of life are mutually incompatible, and part ways amicably. Leafpool x Crowfeather and Bluestar x Oakheart both almost did this, but fell short because it was only ever really one character who decided to end the relationship. Unfortunately, the value in this message is somewhat diminished by the fact that Leopardstar later laments multiple times that she should've given up on her goals and just had kits with Frogtail instead, an absolutely disgusting conclusion that plays into the recurring problem of misogyny in warriors where women aren't allowed to be both mothers and hold a position of power, they have to choose between the two.

All in all, this Super Edition is easily the worst so far in terms of plot, pacing, and writing, but I still found some enjoyment in reading the perspective of such a selfish, cruel protagonist.

Finally finished Leopardstar’s Honor so here are my thoughts: [spoilers to follow]

- Skykit trying to drown Leopardkit and then telling her she’s going to hell for killing her mother.. damn. I really liked how that came back up a few times and played into Leopardstar’s fear of water. I wish she and Sky had had a Tall and Shrew type scene where she explains how Sky hurt her, but alas we don’t get one. Still something I like though!

-Mudfur catching carp for Leopard bc it’s her favorite was so cute I love him!!!

- Sunfish!!! She’s a good character I love her! She was a good friend to Leopard. I liked her and Beetle’s relationship too

- loved the pacing of this book!!! It moved by quickly, but not too fast. I enjoyed it. A lotta super editions are full of filler so it was nice to move on quickly.

- I loved Mudfur in this book so much!! He’s always been a fave so I’m so happy to have a book where he’s a supporting character! His interactions with Leopardstar were really interesting. She also just straight exiled him like?? Wtf??? Rude

- Whiteclaw!! He was a perfect boy I love him so much!! His death hurts so much more now. I loved watching him train as an apprentice, his struggles to focus after Sunfish’s death was very relatable.

- that scene where he goes to Leopardfur for comfort after Sunfish’s death broke me

-I wish Whitepaw had blamed Leopardfur for his mentor’s death and they’d have to sort that out. Leopardstar should have to earn his respect and prove she’ll be better.

- I really liked how Leopardfur and Frogleap’s relationship was portrayed! Their break up was surprisingly handled well for a warriors book. I expand more on that here

- loved every conversation Leopard and Silver had. Silverstream is such an entitled little shit it’s funny to watch her and Leopardstar argue

- I’m glad Leopardstar’s motivations to join with Tiger are purely political. Tigerstar’s characterization was spot on I loved how manipulative he is. His death scene was pretty brutal man

-Leopardstar slowly losing control and any semblance of power over Tigerclan was expected, but nice to see nonetheless. She really was powerless. I imagine if things had gone Tigerstar’s way he would have killed her eventually.

- Featherpaw and Stormpaw being apprenticed and then the book forgetting it and apprenticing them again the next chapter was really annoying like do they not proof read this??

- I think Mistyfoot forgave Leopardstar too quickly. Leopardstar doesn’t deserve her forgiveness. I finished reading at like 1am and proceeded to stay up until 2 am rewriting the scene where Leopardstar asks her to be her deputy.

-love how the first thing Leopardstar did when she saw Scourge was insult him, queen

Overall rating: good book!!! I enjoyed it a lot!!! There’s some parts I didn’t like and the glaring mistakes were pretty bothersome, but overall a good solid read I liked it :)

Sometimes I think how some characters like Shrewclaw and Skyheart that are almost if not just plain bullies, not just assholes, but just awful who in Shrew’s case got physical with Talltail and blamed him for things that weren’t his fault and Skykit almost drowning Leopard and it’s treated like nothing?? (1/2)

Yeah at least TR treated Shrewclaw as the bully he was narratively although unfortunately like you say he never really faced any consequences, but Skykit telling Leopardkit she killed her mother and she would go to hell and literally almost drowning Leopardkit over freaking hide and seek is just never addressed or dealt with. They seem not to like each other a little but then they kind of become friends and it’s never resolved or addressed again in any meaningful way? I would much rather have chapters filled up with stuff about those two than the Frogleap stuff.

Time to talk about Leopardstar's Honor. Spoilers below! Also I share my controversial opinion so be aware of that too. Strap in folks, this is gonna be a long post.

Alright I am gonna start this shit off by confessing: I am not a Leopardstar fan. Like at all. But I was hoping her super edition would change my mind. It worked with Crowfeather's. So I thought "finally, I'll get to understand why everyone loves Leopardstar so much". But this book didn't change my opinion of her at all. In fact it might've made it worse. However, I do think at the very least Leopardstar was written dynamically. She's complex in that she wants what's best for the clan, but does the worst things possible and winds up getting clanmates killed as a result. Her personality sucks, but that's completely my opinion. I don't like people who think and act like she does. The whole book she was like "I'm special uwu" which is annoying. But that doesn't make her a bad character.

Beyond the characterization of Leopardstar, I think the world around her felt a little bland. Especially in compare to how it was described in Crookedstar's Promise. In that book I felt like I was actually walking through Riverclan territory with Crookedjaw. But in this super edition I felt confused at times.

Now to rant about my biggest disappointment with the book: Leopardstar's relationship with other characters. Once again the erins decided to treat foster siblings like they aren't actually family. I kinda liked that Skykit was a little shit towards Leopardkit in the beginning, but I hoped they'd grow to be close. They didn't. In fact Leopardfur barely mentions her foster siblings once she's an older apprentice then warrior, except to refer to them as clanmates. Also Frogleap was Silverstream's foster brother, yet the erins write him as having a crush on her?? Gross. I have a lot more thoughts related to Silverstream, but more on that later.

As for Frogleap, I liked him. He was charming and nice. I was constantly rooting for him to have a good life. I don't like that Leopardfur was in love with him though, it felt forced. But the erins gotta throw in an unnecessary romance somewhere so *shrug*. I liked Leopardfur's relationship with Sunfish though, I thought that was fun. Sunfish was sweet and was a good choice to be the opposite of Leopardfur. They balanced each other out. I was sad when she died. I have no feelings on Whiteclaw though tbh

I didn't like how Mudfur was portrayed in this book. I understand Leopardfur is an unreliable narrator so his behavior seems shitty on purpose. But beyond that, he just comes off as bad. He spoiled his daughter rotten from a young age, constantly telling her how special she is (which fuels her self righteousness) then when she grows up to be greedy and hot headed, he treats her like she shouldn't believe she's more special than anybody else. Like dude you created this monster, and now you're gonna do a full 180 and claim its her fault she's such a brat? Cmon dude

Next, a Silverstream rant. I really wanted Leopardfur to have more of a connection to her. They were both born under the same circumstances (mother wasn't well, and died after giving birth). Theyre both the sole survivors of their litter. Also, they were both born to an important cat in th clan, and spoiled when they were young. And so I thought, maybe Leopardfur would form a fondness for Silverstream because of all this. They could have been written as opposite sides of the same coin. Leopardfur grew up to be ambitious and greedy. She wanted to rule her clan. Silverstream also grew up greedy, but wanted to find happiness with her mate ratherthan her clan. It would have been interesting to see how Leopardfur would handle a cat who was almost just like her. But no, we don't get any of that. Instead somehow Leopardfur finds out Silverstream is dating Graystripe. So the only interaction these two ladies have is over Silverstream's stupid teenage romance. Then Leopardfur has bitter thoughts about Silverstream's kits their entire lives. "Oh I should have looked out for Silverstream more" *proceeds to treat her surviving children like crap because their dad was born someplace else*

I wanna talk about another bit of wasted character relationship potential. Leopardfur's connection to Mistyfoot and Stonefur. Is nonexistent. We hardly get any interaction between those three until Leopardfur is close to becoming leader. Then we start seeing more of Stonefur and just a little bit of Mistyfoot. But barely. It feels as though Leopardstar picks Stonefur outta nowhere, especially when she has deeper connections with other, more experienced cats. Like Beetlenose, and her foster siblings Skyheart and Blackclaw. Hell, even with Loudbelly! Leopardstar doesn't care about Mistyfoot until after Stonefur gets killed on her watch. It's ridiculous! It's wasted character potential. Nothing infuriates me more than wasted character potential.

I will say though, Tigerstar definitely lived up to his full potential in this book. He was cruel, manipulative, cunning, and believably deceiving. I hate Tigerstar as a person. But I love how he was written here as a character. He felt fleshed out and well rounded. And I should hope so, given he's warrior's biggest villain up until the last book of Omen of the Stars. Though I didn't like the implication Tigerstar made about being interested in being Leopardstar's mate. That was gross, just cause he sucks and that makes Tigerstar×Leopardstar canon. Way to go, erins

Finally, I want to talk about the story's writing... god it was a mess. The pacing was terrible. The first couple of chapters were long as hell. The time skipping (especially after chapter 2) could be a bit jarring. And then the later chapters felt short af. The book seemed to fly past the events of TPB rather than giving us a chance to think about and digest Leopardfur's feelings during this time period. And they retconned Oakheart's death which ruins a big plot point of the first warriors arc. There were way too many spelling and grammar errors. The book was sloppily written and you can tell the erins threw everything together as quick as possible without double checking thrir work. I understand the time limit they're given to finish books, but they really should have been more thoughrough with proofreading especially with how large of an editing team they had.

Overall this book was a disappointment. Definitely up there with the worst warriors books ever written. It was a nothing burger of a story. And its such a shame it had to happen to such a beloved character's story. Leopardstar, sweety, you deserved so much better. Im sad I couldn't become a fan. And Im sorry the erins did you so dirty 💔
