Waterfalls in Sunwapta Valley, Jasper National Park, Canada

Nestled within the mesmerizing landscapes of Jasper National Park flows the Sunwapta waterfall. Its serene yet strong cascade adds to the beauty of the picturesque surroundings. This waterfall derives its name from the First Nations language and means "turbulent river." The water drops from a height of approximately 18 metres, giving the national park an enchanting touch. The waterfall gets its water inlet from the Sunwapta River, plummeting down a steep gorge to flow into a magnificent waterfall. Here it’s easy to spot deer, elk, mountain goats and bighorn sheep. One can even catch a glimpse of nearby Pyramid Mountain and Mount Edith Cavell.

I.

The sun and the wind and the rain

All play their part

We liked certain parts more than others

II.

Do you remember the signs

That warned of bears

And said, “stay in your car”?

We read them from our bikes

And laughed nervously

III.

The journey is the point

The destination only marks the end

IV.

One thing I’ve learned:

Riding down might be more fun,

But attaining the summit is victory!

V.

If not for our helmets

The freezing rain

On Sunwapta Pass

Would have really hurt!

Instead, I challenge you to write a poetic review of something that isn’t normally reviewed. For example, your mother-in-law, the moon, or the year you were ten years old.

Poem Title :

Review of My Leftover Sliver of Bathsoap

%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^%^

It is translucent and honey yellow

Not the best bathsoap I’ve ever used

But pleasant, smooth and fragrant,

It smells of patchouli and I think

I’ll be rather sorry when it finally disappears.

I had sent someone to buy some bathsoap for me

He put me through to the salesman because he couldn’t choose

“ We have a new line of organic soaps, Madam,

From the Khadi and Village Industries Cooperative

They are selling like hot cakes,” said the young man

Introduced to me over the phone as Ankit.

I asked him how many fragrances were available

He mentioned sandalwood, rose, lavender and patchouli

I’m not very sure why I chose patchouli but I did

And soon it arrived, wrapped in plain see through cellophane

With a small label - none of the thick fancy covers you find

On Lux with pictures of roses and pearls and a film star

Emerging from the soap suds in a jacuzzi or a hot tub

Or amid waterfalls or foaming waves on a tropical beach.

None of that, just simple soap, which doesn’t foam much,

In fact not at all, almost, and the scent is subtle- I like the fact

That it comes back to surprise you later, as well-

A sort of haunting memory of fragrance, not the thing itself.

I might try sandalwood next time. What do you think?

And yes, it won’t break the bank, far from it, even though

It is organic and fairly eco- friendly.

Wir starten morgens um sieben Uhr, um auf dem kleinen Parkplatz des Parker Ridge Trails im Jasper Nationalpark einen Parkplatz zu bekommen. In der Ferne trollt sich ein Bär über die Straße und zwei junge spielende Kojoten versperren uns den Weg. Wir befinden uns jetzt auf dem Icefields Parkway, dem Highway, der mitten durch die Rocky Mountains führt. Links und rechts die gewaltigen Felsmassive und Gletscher und mittendrin der Highway, der sanft und ohne große Pässe oder Kurven durchs Gelände führt. Neben uns fließt der Saskatchewan River.

Auf dem Parker Ridge Trail wandern wir hinauf bis auf über 2300 Meter Höhe. Oben auf dem Weg am Kamm entlang haben wir eine bombastische Sicht auf den neun Kilometer langen Saskatchewan Gletscher, an dessen Fuß der gleichnamige Fluss entspringt. Rings um uns erheben sich die Dreitausender der Rockies. Das ist jetzt, verglichen mit unseren Alpen, schon nochmal eine andere Hausnummer. Überall blühen bunte Blumen, und es ist trotz der Höhe ziemlich warm, was mal wieder die vampirigen Begleiter auf den Plan ruft. Beim Abstieg ist ziemlich heiß und wir sind froh, schon so früh aufgebrochen zu sein.

Wir fahren weiter zum Icefields Parkplatz, auf dem ein Rummel herrscht wie im Winter oben am Salober. Ringsum erheben sich Felsmassive mit mehreren gewaltigen Gletschern, alles ist spektakulär und grandios und mit dem Auto zu erreichen, was natürlich die Touristen anzieht. Wir fühlen uns in unserer Entscheidung bestätigt, nicht nach Banff gefahren zu sein und wir werden auch Jasper umgehen.

Wir fahren auf dem Icefields Parkway weiter über den Sunwapta Pass und dann am Sunwapta River entlang, vorbei an Gletschern und Felsmassiven mit riesigen Schneeverwehungen und Schneefeldern in der Höhe. Überall gibt es kleine Parkplätze, um die Sehenswürdigkeiten besichtigen und fotografieren zu können. Wir schauen uns unterwegs noch die Sunwapta Falls an, aber auch hier sind wir in guter Gesellschaft. Mittlerweile ist es auf dem Highway heiß und trocken, es herrscht höchste Waldbrandgefahr und wir kommen streckenweise durch die verbrannten Waldstücke der letzten Jahre.

Wir fahren raus aus dem Jasper Nationalpark Richtung Hinton. Ein riesiger Hirsch grast unbeeindruckt am Straßenrand und ignoriert die haltenden Autos und ihre fotografierenden Insassen. Auch ein paar Dickhornschafe kreuzen seelenruhig unseren Weg. In Hinton landen wir nach längerer Suche nach einem Übernachtungsplatz schließlich mal wieder am Canadian Tire.

The Sunwapta Falls inside the Jasper National Park, Canada, are a couple of waterfalls that fall at the same time, the water comes from the Sunwapta river that divides into that small "islet" where it is found again forming a good "whirlpool", the cherry is put by that beautiful color of the water coming from the Athabasca glacier. Apparently, the word Sunwapta comes from the language of the native Indians and means "turbulent water", a good description.
