Adventure Gaming, aka Three Games Designed to Introduce You to Adventure Gaming, in magazine format with Tim Truman cover art, sold by SPI for $1.00 in 1981, with two map sheets and a small sheet of die cut cardstock counters -- including The Creatures that Ate New York (adapted from The Creature that Ate Sheboygan), Napoleon at Waterloo (a Jim Dunnigan wargame that SPI had been giving away separately with Strategy & Tactics subscriptions), and The Tower of Azann (a programmed solo or co-op fantasy RPG adventure with two pages of fine print numbered paragraphs), plus a little article by Redmond Simonsen on “Solitaire Play” for board games

This is Moon Base Clavius (1981), from Task Force Games. I dunno if you noticed, but I was trying to have a science fiction board game theme this week. That meant this beat out The Creature that Ate Sheboygan because it is a bit more science fictiony, what with the moon base and the laser guns.
It is a pretty straight forward game at a glance. Nothing jumps out at me as being particularly interesting the way Starship Troopers did. Its Americans vs. Russians. On the moon. Pew pew.
I guess this is what you’d call a filler post.

Board Game 30-Day Challenge
Day 18: Is there a game that served as your gateway into the hobby of board gaming? Do you have any recommendations for those looking to get into the hobby?
I can't recall a time when I didn't play board games. I was the youngest of 9 and we were technically middle class but really we were poor. We had 1 b&w TV which our parents got first crack at so the kids had to find something else to keep ourselves amused. That turned out to be (especially in the frozen winter) card and board games.
As I got older and outgrew Uncle Wiggly and The Game of Life it just seemed natural to move up to more complex games - hobby games. A lot of them were small and cheap (The Creature That Ate Sheboygan, They've Invaded Pleasantville, there was a Dracula one) but occasionally I was able to convince my parents to shell out for a more expensive game (how I wish I still had Dark Tower!).
I've mentioned previously that playing Pandemic Legacy Season 1 was what jumpstarted my current interest in the hobby. I guess I had gotten jaded and thought that there was nothing new to experience.

Crush, Crumble and Chomp! (1981 Computer Game By Epyx) is a 1981 computer game from Epyx. In this game, the player takes control of a movie monster and attacks a famous city, such as New York or San Francisco. It resembles SPI's 1979 boardgame, The Creature That Ate Sheboygan. #crush #crumble #chomp #epyx #1981 #computer #computergame #pcgame #computergames #computergaming #computergamer #computergamers #pc #pcgaming #pcgamer #pcgames #retro #retrogames #retrogaming #videogaming #nostalgia

The Creature That Ate Sheboygan is a 1979 board game that pits one player as the military and civilian units against another player using one of six customizable giant monsters (a Godzilla look-alike, a sea serpent, a robot, a pterodactyl, a gorilla and a giant spider) to destroy the town of Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Honestly I'm glad there is another giant monster related thing that takes place in here in Wisconsin besides The Giant Spider Invasion. That film is terrible. I should see if someone in Sheboygan still sells this game...
