Longtime NBA center Marc Gasol officially announced his retirement as a player on Wednesday, as relayed by Spanish outlet Diario Sport.
The 48th overall pick in the 2007 draft, Gasol didn’t enter the NBA with significant fanfare as a draft-and-stash prospect in 2008 after his rights were traded from the Lakers to the Grizzlies in a package for his brother Pau Gasol. However, he quickly emerged as a reliable starter in the middle and became a key member of the “Grit and Grind” Grizzlies, spending more than 10 seasons with the franchise.
An All-Star in 2012, 2015, and 2017 and the NBA’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, Gasol was eventually traded from Memphis to Toronto at the 2019 deadline and was the starting center for the Raptors team that won a championship that season. After one more year in Toronto, he spent the 2020-21 season with the Lakers.
In an echo of the start of his NBA career, Gasol was once again traded in September of 2021 from the Lakers to the Grizzlies, who subsequently waived him. That was the last time he was on an NBA roster. The 39-year-old spent the next two seasons with Basquet Girona, the team he owns and runs in Spain.
While Gasol indicated about two years ago that he hadn’t ruled out the possibility of an NBA return, he’s closing that door with his official retirement announcement.
He averaged 14.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.4 blocks in 891 career regular-season NBA games (32.2 MPG), posting a shooting line of .481/.360/.776. He also appeared in 99 playoff contests with the Grizzlies, Raptors, and Lakers and earned a pair of All-NBA nods, including a spot on the First Team in 2015.
Grizzlies owner Robert Pera said at the time of Gasol’s trade to the Raptors that the franchise would one day retire his jersey (No. 33). The team could move forward on those plans now that the big man has formally retired.

The Golden State Warriors might have lost to the Sacramento Kings in the final year's playoffs; however, there's clearly no unhealthy blood between the crew's All-Star level guards, with De'Aaron Fox changing into the primary NBA participant to signal with Stephen Curry's Underneath Armor offshoot, Curry Model.

HARTFORD WOLF PACK REPORTER'S NOTEBOOK

HARTFORD, CT - The Hartford Wolf Pack announced two home dates for their three-game pre-season action.
Both contests will be held on the Hartford Campus of Trinity College at the Koeppel Community Center. The arena serves as the Wolf Pack's off-site training facility for practice sessions for a second straight season.
The first of the two games will be on Wednesday, October 4th, in the first of many meetings with the Pack's I-91 rivals, the Springfield Thunderbirds. The puck drop will be at 7:00 p.m. Then, game two will be the backside of a home-and-home with the Bridgeport Islanders, who will play under new head coach Rick Kowalsky, who has ex-Pack Pascal Rheaume as one of his assistants. That game will be on Saturday, October 7th, at 1:00 p.m.
Sandwiched between those two games, early in the afternoon on Thursday, October 5th, will be the front end of the home-and-home with the Islanders in Bridgeport, which will be closed to the public.

Bridgeport officially announced what Howlings first reported: a new one-year AHL deal with now-ex-Pack Tanner Fritz. He returns to "Park City," where he spent the first six years of his career. Fritz played collegiately at Ohio State when the Buckeyes were in the CCHA before moving to the Big 10.
Over 20 years ago, the New Haven Ravens Double-A baseball team disbanded. Their announcer from 1994-1995, Matt Devlin, is now part of the voice of the NBA Toronto Raptors.
The hockey connection?
Devlin's two sons will play Ivy League Division-I hockey this year.
Ian Devlin, 21, went undrafted after playing with the Coquitlam Express (BCHL) in 2021-22. He's joining the Princeton Tigers (ECACHL).
Luke Devlin, 19, is a 2021 sixth-round Pittsburgh Penguins draft choice. He played with the West Kelowna Warriors (BCHL) last season and will be skating in Ithaca, NY, for his freshmen season. The youngest Devlin will lace them up with the Cornell University Big Red (ECACHL).
Speaking of Cornell, the school's top star from the last century, NHL Hall of Famer, and legendary Montreal Canadien, Ken Dryden will see his grandson, Hunter Dryden, skating for a prep school in the Nutmeg State this year.
Hunter is a Fairfield, CT, resident who played for the CT Jr. Rangers U-15 program. This winter, he will play at the defending New England small school champion Taft School (Watertown). He will try to fill the big skates of the now-departed Detroit Red Wing draft pick and Yale University-bound (next year) Rudy Guimond.
Guimond will skate for the Cedar Rapids Roughriders in the USHL. They helped develop another Taft player a generation ago, Max Pacioretty.

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — South Sudan is the world’s youngest nation, gaining its independence only 12 years ago. Cape Verde is one of the world’s least-populated nations, with fewer residents than any country that qualified for the Basketball World Cup.
They stood tall on Monday at the World Cup — both nations winning games at FIBA’s biggest tournament for the first time.
It was a double-dose of history for African basketball: South Sudan beat China 89-69 at Manila and Cape Verde beat Venezuela 81-75 at Okinawa, Japan. The wins kept both teams in contention for berths in the second round of the World Cup, and they remain very much in the race to become Africa’s automatic qualifier for next summer’s Paris Olympics.
“I’m still speechless,” said Cape Verde’s Will Tavares, a Rhode Island-born forward who scored 20 points in Monday’s win. “I feel like I’m in a dream right now, but the win was so big for us and our country and our families. We made a statement. Even though we’re the smallest country, we have so much heart.”
They were the two lowest-ranked nations in the 32-team field to begin the tournament, both countries getting to the World Cup for the first time. South Sudan is ranked 62nd worldwide by FIBA, the sport’s global governing body; Cape Verde is ranked 64th.
And they both have a chance to be among the 16 teams still standing when the second round starts Friday.
“I’m just blessed and honored to be a part of this,” South Sudan’s Nuni Omot said. “This journey so far, it’s just been an emotional and amazing feeling for me. And I know everyone else on the team feels the same way as well.”
South Sudan’s basketball program was essentially started a few years ago by former NBA player Luol Deng, who was born in the country and raised in London after his father — a former Sudanese government official and former political prisoner — was granted asylum by Britain. Deng learned to play basketball in London, a scout noticed him when he was about 14 and his life forever changed.
When Deng’s playing days were over, he became president of South Sudan’s fledgling basketball federation. If there is an indoor court anywhere in that country, Deng doesn’t know where it is. He believes the country doesn’t have a single regulation-sized floor.
Yet here its players are, undaunted by doubt, unfazed by massive challenges.
“Luol Deng is the heart and soul of all of this,” said South Sudan coach Royal Ivey, an assistant with the NBA’s Houston Rockets. “He’s the president. Without Luol I wouldn’t be sitting here right now. He had a great vision. I entrusted in his vision and it all came together. I’m in awe that I’m sitting here at the World Cup. I’m forever indebted to Luol for giving me an opportunity to coach this team.”
Africa has long been considered the sleeping giant in global basketball, and big strides have been made in recent years through investment — such as academies that the NBA has built there to identify and develop promising young players, the NBA-backed Basketball Africa League and the Giants of Africa initiative led by Toronto Raptors President Masai Ujiri, a native of Nigeria. That group, among other things, is building courts and hosting clinics for boys and girls around the continent.
“Today is a unique and marvelous moment for our people,” Cape Verde coach Emanuel Trovoada said.
Both South Sudan and Cape Verde have one game left in group-stage play — South Sudan plays Serbia on Wednesday, while Cape Verde will take on Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic and Slovenia. The top-ranked African team at this World Cup will automatically qualify for the Paris Olympics; so far, South Sudan, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast and Angola all have 1-1 records in the race for that berth.
“This is a dream come true,” Omot said. “People don’t understand where we were just two years ago. To be able to do this in front of our fans, people watching back at home, it’s been a very emotional day for everyone getting our first World Cup win.”
