There was a soft knock at the door as Minghao sighed. “Baby, you do realize you’re a burrito, right?”

You whined from inside your blanket cocoon. You had a bad day at work and were sore all over. All you wanted to do was wallow in your self pity. That and maybe indulge in some sweets because, dammit, you deserved it.

The bed dipped and you knew Minghao was sitting across from you. “Do you need anything? I can get you whatever you want. Name it and it’s yours.”

When you shook your head, he sighed before wrapping you into a hug. You didn’t protest and instead let him envelope you in warm, loving cuddles. He chuckled as he pulled you closer.

“You’re so cute, all snuggly and warm like this.” He murmured.

“Thanks.” Your heart wasn’t in your response, but you appreciated the cuddles nonetheless.

Minghao nuzzled into you closer, making a small smile appear on your face. “You don’t have to tell me what’s bothering you right now. You can tell me in your own time. I just hope I’m helping right now.”

“You are.” You assured him. “Your cuddles always solve everything.”

He hummed in contentment. “Glad to hear that. That just means I have to cuddle you more often.”

“Please.”

“Of course.” He moved some of the blanket away so he could kiss you on the cheek. “Anything for my favorite person in the world. But don’t tell the other members that.”

You chuckled before curling into him even more. “I wouldn’t dream of it.”

It takes more effort than it normally does for you to push open the front door, stumbling inside, feet and eyes burning. He looks up as you trudge into the living room, and there's no smile on his face, but an understanding softness that feels infinitely more comforting.

He's still awake—because of course he is, even though you insisted he didn't have to stay up for you—and he shuffles over slightly, patting the space beside him on the sofa. Almost instantly, you flop down next to him, and the tears start pooling in your eyes as if they've been waiting for you to be next to your home before they try to spill over.

"How was your day?" Minghao murmurs, because even though he knows, can see the exhaustion radiating from you, he asks because he wants to hear your thoughts. He wants to know how you truly feel.

"Horrible," you reply, and he just chuckles, wrapping an arm around you as your face is buried into his shoulder, dampening the fabric with your tiredness.

Minghao hums softly, rubbing a hand comfortingly over your arm. "That's alright. Do you want to tell me about it?" When you shake your head, he hums again. "That's alright too."

There's silence, then, as he lets you cry quietly into his shoulder, letting you cry out all your frustrations without interruption. He holds you as the tears die down, dabbing your eyes with his own hands, tilting your chin upwards and pressing a quiet kiss to your nose.

"I'm here for you," he says, and there's sincerity in his eyes, visible even in the dim room. Eyes asking you if you're feeling a little better now. Eyes carrying the underlying message of 'I love you'.

You smile, slightly. "Thank you." 'I love you too'.

Minghao searches your eyes for a long moment, and then smiles—sweet, comforting, understanding. "Don't worry. You're home now."

As he hugs you once again, warmth and love practically tangible in his touch, you can't help but close your eyes and melt into the embrace.

Yes. This was home.

it was a quiet day. you went to college, attended classes, spent time with friends, and came home to minghao in a fluffy bathrobe, reading.

it was pleasantly surprising to see him back home to early. you settled in comfortably next to him after a quick shower, tucked in beside him, making you look smaller than you were.

some time later, you both gravitated towards each other, even closer, if it was possible. you laid your head on his lap, as he read and absentmindedly played with your hair. not even a few minutes had passed before you let out a loud yawn, startling minghao out of his daze.

"sleepy?" he quietly asked. you hummed back in reply and snuggled down further. he chuckled and continued playing with your hair.

"how was your day?" his voice was deep and calming and only lulled you further into slumber.

"hmm, nice," your voice was muffled as you replied back, "we had to submit an assignment tod—" you were interrupted by another yawn.

"sleep, bǎobèi, i'm here," he bent down to press a soft kiss on your hairline, continuing to card his fingers through your hair.

it wasn't long before you found yourself in a dreamless sleep, your body so relaxed after a long day that you felt as if you could float away any moment.

minghao stared at you as you slept, his heart growing fonder with each passing second. he pressed another light kiss, this time on your head, and smiled to himself.

It had been a screaming match for the past 20 minutes and both of your staff had left, locking the doors per requested to allow the two of you to battle it out. They knew better than to try and stop either of your passionate selves.

“Are you fucking kidding me, Hao? That design pattern is mine and has been for over a month now. You’re acting like a fucking idiot trying to play dumb here,” You screamed at him, imagining that steam was radiating off your head from how annoyed you were with him. Even so, you couldn’t help your feminine urges to want to rid his silk designer rob off his broad shoulders, and leave marks all over his tan neck.

He scoffed at your attitude, trying to be all high and mighty, “You know what. I’m sick of your fucking attitude towards me. Look at you. Acting like a big girl for once? Not hiding behind your supervisor this time?” He taunted, moving towards you, unconsciously backing you into the corner of the room, “I hate that you look this good and yet you still make me hate you,” Without another word, he gripped your chin, pulling your face upwards to meet his soft lips in a heated, but rough embrace.

You knew you shouldn’t, but it felt so right. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling at the ends of his hair, feeling the effect it had on him as he rubbed his hard bulge against your thigh. You smirked into the kiss, moving your lips down to his neck to suck purple marks all over it.

“You hate me, yet you want to mark me? Get over your self,” He chuckled sarcastically before picking you up and moving you towards the large desk, “Bend over bitch. I won’t say it again.”

You whinced at his demand before following his instructions. His harsh actions of pulling your pants and panties down, made you tingle in areas you forgot about. His hand rubbed your soft bottom before landing a hard smack, making your squeal out in pleasure and pain.

“Fuck, I knew you liked it rough. You can tell by how annoying your mouth is,” Minghao insulted, pulling his dress pants down to release his dripping cock, “To most women, I’m a complete gentleman, but for you, you don’t deserve that after how you’ve been acting. Little girl needs to be punished.”

You rolled your eyes, “Just say I intimidate you rather than making such, fuck, such dumb excuses,” You sarcastically remarked before releasing a string of moans from the angle he began hitting that was making you see stars, “Don’t stop Hao!”

“You wish you intimidated me. You’re all talk baby. Look at your drooling over how good I’m fucking you right now,” He chuckled, pulling out to leave you missing your orgasm. You turned to look at him with annoyance and frustration in your eyes, “I didn’t say I’d let you cum. Remember, good girls get rewards. Oct 22nd [The8 + Fun with Clones]

[8:08] “Okay, dude. What gives?” You were staring down Minghao in his doorway. He’d been avoiding you. Honestly he’d been avoiding everything and everyone and you were tired of it. All of his reasons had been evasive and weird and you were sure at this point that something was going on.

“Wh-What are you doing here?” He said, gaze shifting back into his house.

“I’m checking up on you. Now let me in.”

“No!” He fully pushed you back before grabbing the door again and keeping the opening as small as possible.

“Minghao, what the hell?!”

“It’s a big mess.”

“As if I’d care.” You tried to push past him.

“I-I’m sick.” He quickly changed his excuse, throwing a weak cough for extra emphasis.

“Okay, what did you do? What weird shit is going on in there?” You questioned.

“It’s really nothing. Please, just- I am begging you to leave.”

“I’m not going until-”

“Do we have a visitor?”

You froze and so did Minghao. The voice that came from inside his apartment sounded exactly the same as his. Minghao gave you a wide-eyed stare, face white with fear as your gaze shifted between him and the gap in the door.

“H-Hello?” You called cautiously. Minghao’s eyes were pleading with you, one last chance to walk away but now you were confused and intrigued and you needed to know what he was up to. Minghao stayed frozen to the spot as the door swung open to reveal…

Minghao?

“I didn’t know you had a twin?” You mused.

“I’m not a twin, silly,” the second Minghao smiled. “I’m a clone.”

“A what?!”

“OKAY!” Minghao grabbed you and his clone and dragged you both inside, slamming the door shut behind you. He pulled you to the couch where you plopped down trying to process. The two of you had joked about clones before, about the government cloning people. Governments do all kinds of weird conspiracy-theory worthy shit. But you didn’t think they actually had the technology to clone people.

“How the fuck did this happen?”

“They made me in a lab, duh,” The clone said, perched on the end of the couch. “Minghao, why didn’t you tell me you had hot friends?”

You looked at him in surprise and Minghao went red in the face sputtering.

“You think I’m hot?”

“Of course we do-”

“Can you give us a minute!?” Minghao said quickly, shooing his clone away. The clone sighed but got up, giving you a quick wink that made your face warm as he sauntered away down the hall. You turned your attention back to Minghao.

“Okay look, you remember how like a month ago I was freaked out. I thought someone was following me?”

“Yeah, and then you when MIA. I thought you fully skipped town.”

“I did,” he rubbed the back of his neck. “I needed to know for sure. And when I saw… Hao I just- I-I don’t know what I was thinking but I thought it was better to have him with me than whatever else anyone could want to do with a look-a-like.”

“Did you steal your own clone?!”

“I had to!” He cried. “What else could I do? I know I can’t stay here much longer either.”

“So you’re leaving for good?” You said, shoulders falling.

“I mean there’s no way I’m allowed to just keep a clone here,” he said dejectedly. “I don’t want to but I think as soon as I saw him nothing good was going to come of it for me.”

“I can go with you.” You said.

Minghao said you name sadly, shaking his head. “That’s not a good idea.”

“You might need someone they aren’t looking for.”

“Still, I don’t want to put you in danger.”

You rolled your eyes. “If they’re secretly making clones of us we’re all already in danger. And without you I’m in danger of eternal boredom and bad decisions.”

“Ah-” Minghao stopped, a smile tugging at his lips. “That’s not entirely false.”

“See,” you nudged his arm. “It’s a good thing I came barging in. Call him back, I wanna meet him.”

“He’s the same as me,” Minghao mumbled. “Well, we were exactly the same person up until he was fully formed and started walking around on his own. But we share all the same feelings and memories and a lot of the same thoughts.”

“So that’s what he meant by “of course we do”.” You mused, looking back down the hall.

“Ah, that.”

You trained your gaze back on Minghao. “You think I’m hot?”

“Of course I do,” he mumbled. “How could I not?”

You scoffed. “You never said anything.”

“Why would I have?” He questioned.

“You didn’t think it would go anywhere?”

He looked at you helplessly. “Of course not. You’re not interested.”

“Who said I’m not?”

Minghao just stared at you. Some part of you was annoyed that he never thought to mention his feelings. Most of you was so overwhelmed from the information you were processing that it felt like very little of your brain was even functioning and the rest was just computing power.

“I-I,” Minghao couldn’t quite manage to get any words out. All this time he’d wanted something with it and when all of this started he was sure any chance he had was completely gone. And he hid his feelings so well you’d dismissed any of your own as wishful thinking.

“God for someone smart you’re an idiot,” you sighed, grabbing his face and kissing him. Minghao froze for a moment, only a moment before he started kissing you back. He was slow and hesitant and as you wrapped your arms around him and urged him closer you were sure you could hear his heart beating out of his chest.

Minghao’s hands found your waist and he tugged at you, wanting you closer. You carefully climbed onto his lap, continuing the kiss and pressing against his chest. His touch was gentle and sweet as he seemed to come to terms with all of it, more and more passion seeping into his kisses.

“What? You get to kiss your hot friend but I don’t?”

You broke apart from the kiss, feeling heat rising to your face. Minghao wouldn’t let you move from his lap even though his skin was as warm as yours judging by the colour of it.

“Do you mind?”

“Yes,” Hao responded. “I want in on the action.”

“Can you not take a hint?”

“I don’t want to,” He bickered.

“Yep, same person,” you chuckled.

“What do you think?” Hao turned his attention to you. “Do you want me to go or stay.”

“I-” You thought for a moment. Your brain seemed numb to all of the strange things happening at this point and you weren’t sure in all honesty.

“Do you actually want him to join?” Minghao questioned.

“I-I don’t know,” you said truthfully. “Like it’s weird. But this is already so weird anyway? You must have known he’d feel the same way about me.”

“I wasn’t planning on introducing you,” he muttered.

“Look,” Hao came up next to you two, ruffling Minghao’s hair who tried to shake him off. “I think you’re hot, but the crush is all Minghao here. I’m not going to get in the way of whatever you’ve just decided to have. All I’m proposing is a little fun.”

You shrugged to Minghao. “Why don’t we just figure out everything else later?”

Minghao looked between you and himself and sigh. “Well, the day couldn't get any weirder anyway.”

“Never say never,” Hao hummed, sitting next to the two of you on the couch. “I know all the freaky shit you like.”

Minghao’s skin burned red as you looked between them. “What freaky shit?!”

“All in good time,” Hao patted your arm before gently urging you off Minghao’s lap. He reluctantly released you and let you settle between the two of them. Hao tilted your face back to Minghao and you took the hint kissing him again. You felt Minghao’s hand start rubbing your thigh and you sighed. Hao pressed to your other side, leaving a kiss on your neck as his hand slipped up under your shirt.

“Just sit back and enjoy,” Hao purred.

[3:27 PM] There were worse ways for you to spend an afternoon. In fact, almost every other way you could spend this afternoon had nothing on this.

You shielded your eyes from the afternoon sun and glanced down at Minghao. He was lying with his head in your lap, hands folded calmly on his stomach, soaking up sunlight. Apparently, sunbathing was one of his favorite things to do to relax, which seemed counterintuitive for someone who hated summer so much. But you weren’t complaining; not when it meant you could spread out a blanket in a sunny spot and sit like this together.

You studied the lines of his face fondly. “Enjoying yourself, love?”

“Shhh. I’m photosynthesizing,” he murmured without opening his eyes.

You snorted. “Well, scoot over and I’ll photosynthesize next to you.”

He sighed and blinked up at you derisively. “Very well.”

You both scooted around on the blanket until you were lying on your back shoulder-to-shoulder with him, letting the sun warm you from head to toe.

“Not a bad day for this,” you said.

“Yes. Now shush and let me enjoy it.”

You grinned and stayed quiet for a little while, but you couldn’t resist. He was too fun to bother.

You turned on your side to look at him. “Wanna go get ice cream in a little bit? Bet it’ll be nice in this heat.”

“I want you to stop talking,” he murmured without opening his eyes, but he didn’t sound like he believed it would happen.

“Nah, you like that I’m a chatterbox,” you teased, grinning when he heaved a long-suffering sigh. “So what about it? Ice cream?”

“You are the worst,” he mumbled, scowling without opening his eyes.

You laughed, and then you couldn’t help yourself. You leaned over and started peppering his face with little kisses.

“Agh, stop, I–” he spluttered, lifting his hands and pushing half-heartedly against your chest.

“Can’t stop, you’re too cute,” you said between little kisses, laughing when he made a face. “And I like you too much, moodiness and all.”

“Rude,” he muttered, fighting a smile when you pecked the tip of his nose gently.

“So,” you said, leaning back and giving him room to breathe. “Ice cream?”

“…Yes, please.”

The night air danced along your skin like a gentle exhale. You softly pushed the door closed behind you, then padded along the polished wood surface of the terrace. Stars littered the sky above like an upside down reflection of the warm glow of lights coming from the houses down in the town. Even from here, within the confines of the palace walls, one could hear the mirthful laughter of townspeople—friends, families, neighbors, strangers.

It was such a stark difference to the cold quiet of the palace.

Crown prince Xu Minghao sat with his back facing you and his legs dangling off the edge. He was perched atop the railing, and though you had once feared his falling, you now knew he was more than capable of keeping his balance. His hanfu was stripped down to the thin, white layers below, allowing for his usually bound body to finally inhale and exhale. His gaze was turned to the village, and the horizon, beyond. It had always been that way; always past the palace borders.

You wondered if you should say something, but you found a place to lean against the railing next to him and follow his gaze.

"I just wanted to be treated like a human," his voice met your ears so softly you almost believed it had been the wind, "is that too much to ask?"

Your throat constricted. "I…" The words died upon your tongue, similar to Minghao's childhood wishes thrown to the wind. He had dreamed and hoped and loved without caution… and now, what had he left but the cold, empty pit of a fireplace?

No words could describe the ache in your chest, but you reached for his hand anyway. If anyone saw the way he grasped your fingers, how your limbs interlocked with each other so perfectly, they would not hesitate to remind you of your place in society. You had learned such a lesson several times before.

But Minghao had always reminded you of your place, as well—by his side. It was not below him or under him or away from him. You were a dreamer just like him, trapped in a vessel that hindered your spirit from flying free. Somehow though, you had found each other.

Minghao helped you up onto the railing next to him, anchoring your body to his so you would not fear the fall— "It's beautiful, isn't it?" He whispered. "It'll all be mine one day, but how much will it truly belong to me?"

—The truth was, you could never fear the fall. Not when you had a feeling he would always be there to catch you, no matter the cost. That was who he was.

"You can be the change the empire needs." You turned your head to stare out at the black horizon, the warm glow of life and happiness so blurry in the foreground. "You can define your own greatness, Hao."

His hand gave a gentle squeeze to your waist. "Will you be there—with me?"

Your vision blurred, tears pooling in your eyes. He knew the answer better than you did. The lights slurred together and you felt his hold grow tighter. "Of course," you rasped. "Of course, I will."

he found himself slowly sipping on tea as he read through this one page for... the second time or so. it was a book from the local library, chosen from interest in the sypnosis on the back (like any other book checked out). while minghao had been going through the pages for a while, nearly halfway in, he was actually waiting for something.

unlike most people, he was a fast reader. i mean- how else would he have ended up at this point in the plot? (the protagonist girl had told the boy that she hoped to never see him again, because of a curse that had affected their bond. it was getting sad, it would lead to somewhere good though, he hoped.) but he was a considerate guy. bless his heart or whatever the elderly said.

the wind from the open window just happened to blow harder though, flipping to the next page. this startled him, and he half-expected the cold dread that had brushed over his good shoulder. "sorry," minghao muttered as he turned the page back. the ghost that haunted his apartment wasn't that fast of a reader.

"i'm almost there, don't worry love," minghao's voice could be heard coming from your almost shattered phone as you gripped it tighter and closer to your ear. "just give me a few more minutes, i'll call you when i am close."

the line went silent.

"don't slow down! the girl shall become one of us!"

you heard the shout before you felt the hit. you fell and felt a throbbing pain on the back of your thighs. you wanted to get up and continue to run, but by then the people caught up with you.

When you asked Minghao to teach you Mandarin, he was more than happy to teach you. He was confident you could learn the language, especially with him teaching you. He was sure he was capable of being able to teach the language since he was such a good student in his past and because he grew up learning the language.

However, in practice, it was far more difficult than he thought. Not because you were bad at it; on the contrary, you were pretty good at it. You weren’t the best and you did fumble with the pronunciation and grammar, but you were doing a lot better than he thought you would. No, what his problem was, was the fact that you were so cute when you spoke Mandarin.

Every time you attempted a new word or spoke a sentence of new words, his heart would melt into a puddle on the floor. You were just so cute, trying and finally getting it. The way you would wiggle in your seat with joy when you got a word or complicated sentence, he just wanted to pepper you in kisses and cuddles. And he wasn’t a big fan of PDA.

One day, you were going over your Mandarin lessons when you asked him a question that nearly killed him. “So I have a question. What does it mean when I say wǒ ài nǐ?”

He practically choked on his water. “Ah what?”

“Wǒ-”

“I heard you.” He cut you off.

What could he say? You both were still pretty new to this whole relationship. Neither of you said I love you yet. Does he tell you that you just said I love you to him? Was that okay? All the warning bells were ringing in his head and he didn’t know what to do anymore.

“So do you know what it means?” You asked. “Or do I need to ask Junhui?”

“NO!” Minghao practically shouted, abruptly standing up and knocking the chair he was sitting onto the floor. “You cannot ask Junhui!”

You blushed. “Why? Did I say something bad?”

He also blushed. “No, no, you didn’t say anything too bad…”

“Then what did I say?” You mumbled.

Well, he might as well tell you. He tried to convince himself it was like ripping off a bandaid. Screwing his eyes shut, he admitted, “What you said was I love you.”

There was a beat before you answered. “Oh? Is that all? I thought I said something like go fuck yourself.”

“Y/n!”

“Kidding.” You teased.

Another pause passed before he spoke up. “So you’re not weirded out by the fact that you just said you loved me?”

You shook your head. “Nope. I knew I was going to say it eventually. I guess now was the perfect time!”

“So you love me?”

Nodding, you took his hands in yours. “Of course I love you Minghao. I always have.”

He smiled before kissing your forehead. “Wǒ ài nǐ.”

Lately, all you could think about was how to be better or how you should try harder or you don’t have enough. These thoughts were intoxicating, they were greedy, and you weren’t sure how to fully shake them. You hated yourself for feeling this way. You wanted to be happy, yet for some reason, you kept reverting back to how monetary value brings happiness, instead of the wonderful small things in life or the amazing people.

You took a deep breath, closing your eyes as the warm sunset glared onto your face. You weren’t at peace by any means, but this was the closest you could get at the moment. You leaned your head against the wooden poll of the porch.

“You still out here?” Your best friend chimed from behind as he closed the door before taking a seat next to you, “How are you doing?”

You opened your eyes before letting a sigh out, “I don’t know,” You turned towards him, “I either feel tired always or when I do have energy, I feel almost empty if I’m not constantly doing something. It sounds terrible, but sometimes, I just wish I could chill the fuck out and relax just because life is moving, doesn’t mean I have to move with it.”

Minghao chuckled to himself, “Wouldn’t we all want that?” He grinned down at your sweet face, “Finding happiness in the contentment of our actions and thoughts is what helps us stay sane and happy. There is no way to ever feel at peace unless you are truly distant yourself from all things toxic in this world, even those you may truly enjoy. That’s why monks always live in the mountains with no technology and amongst themselves. It’s a hard lifestyle, but it brings peace,” He took your hand in his as he caressed the back of it lightly to sooth your restless soul, “How do you think you can find your inner peace to calm your shaken self?”

“Hao, you know I love you more than life itself, but if you get any deeper than this, I’ll beat your ass right here,” You frowned at him with annoyance, even though you knew what he meant and did take it to heart.

“Yeah! I’m trying to help you. Don’t be rude now!” Minghao scolded, swearing you saw smoke come out of his ears.

You took another deep breath as you leaned your head against his shoulder, feeling his arm wrap around your shoulder to bring you in closer, “Do we ever find inner peace? Will this feeling ever leave? Will I ever feel content instead of always searching for more?” You felt tears prick your eyes, trying not to get emotional.

He smiled down at you, hearing the crack in your voice, even as you tried staying strong in front of him, like you always tried to do, “You will be. This will all fade, and one day, you will forget about this even happening. The happiness and joy of the content of life will outweigh the bad memories and sad times in your life. Even if you think of them, they won’t hurt as bad. They won’t sting your heart anymore like they once did.”

You pressed your head into his chest, letting a few tears roll down your face as you tried staying quiet to pretend you weren’t crying. You never wanted to seem weak. Never. Especially not in front of those you cared and wanted to protect.

Minghao held you tighter, running a hand through your hair as he pretended to not notice your crying to allow your emotions and frustration flow out of you, “It’s times like these were turning points begin and pain begins to subside. Not completely, but over time. It’ll get better before you even realize it.”

“Shut up. How can you be so wise for only being 25? I think a monk possessed you,” You joked through your tears.

“Even when you’re crying and at your lowest, you still have time to insult me,” He mumbled under his breath, just low enough for you not to hear, “Just be thankful I love you so much.”
