Livy often utilizes his work to portray honorable examples for the Roman people to be inspired by and follow. Lucius Quinctus Cincinattus is one of those examples. He exemplifies the idea of a modest citizen farmer who drops his responsibilities to answer the call of the state. He is elected dictator at the time of war with neighboring peoples. When the representatives come to tell him of this appointment, he is found doing laborious farm work. He immediately tells his wife to fetch his toga, and off he goes to serve Rome. This noble example of putting Rome over one’s self is a motif through Ab Urbe Condita. Lucius defeats the enemy and steps down from the dictatorship, and Livy wants the reader to understand that it is honorable that Lucius was not selfish or power hungry; he fulfilled his duty and released the power. Other leaders in the book, like the Tarquins, would have seized this opportunity to take control forever, yet Lucius recognizes his place and returns to his duties at home. Perhaps Livy knew that there would always be power hungry people and that is why he used this example to demonstrate the proper use of power. If only Livy could see our current leaders and how they misuse their power. Perhaps he would spend the entire book talking about noble men like Lucius.
