I think as well when it comes to explaining why British socialist parties behave in the way they do (rigid internal culture + ideological sectarianism towards others + strange fetish for paper selling), it’s worth thinking about where these parties come from. All of these parties are seeking or have sought at one stage in their lives to operate within a larger body, namely the Labour Party or the trade union movement. All left wing tendencies in the UK have undertaken entryism into Labour at some point in their history and all continue to practice this in the mainstream trade union movement.
The aim of these parties has been to win these larger bodies to their political position or to win control of them through internal election. Therefore, it makes a lot of sense to sell newspapers - you have a body of people (trade union or LP members) who you would want to win over to your ideas and moreso would be interested in buying a paper from you during a meeting.
It also makes a lot of sense to operate a tightly disciplined organisation with an extremely unified political line. If you have lots of people making the same argument in trade union and Labour Party meetings, you are more likely to win that body over to your position by sheer weight of numbers. Additionally, the Labour Party or trade union bureaucracy will want to purge you eventually - hence the need for tight internal discipline.
These parties all had their best successes in the 1970s and 80s, when participation in the trade union movement and Labour Party was at its height. What happens in these party and union meetings really matters, because these bodies can direct the policy thousands of people will be carrying out. It also makes sense therefore why you’d have quite serious disagreements with the other left parties - they are operating on the same model and it really matters whether the wrong line wins out.
However, the political base for this kind of politics has been hollowed out. The unions were broken in the 1980s and the industrial structures that they were organised around (large scale factories with large working class communities whose collective lives were oriented towards them) have been systematically destroyed. However, we have inherited socialist parties whose modus operandi hasn’t changed - it is still about agitating for the correct political line against other incorrect political tendencies, only now it is more about shouting this line into the void and at each other, getting more and more deranged as these parties become less and less attached to the rest of society.
The task now has to be the reconstruction of working class institutions. We need to build structures that people can use to defend themselves and fight back against the capitalists, and structures which people can use to directly influence who gets what and when rather than leaving these questions entirely to the market. To give a few more concrete examples of what these structures are, I would say these are revived trade unions, community and tenants’ unions, anti-fascist defence associations, mass membership socialist political parties, food banks and benefit advice centres, international solidarity campaigns with people in countries where processes are further ahead than ours, and left wing social, political and community centres. The construction of each of these institutions compliments the construction of the others. Each of these institutions as well helps challenge the rule of the capitalist by being what are essentially alternative management structures to the capitalists and to the market. They help lay the basis for a challenge to capitalism by helping construct an alternative democratic society which can act as a counterstate to the existing order of things. During the inevitable social explosions that are coming, these institutions can develop rapidly and can challenge the existing capitalist state and its attendants for power.
For this constructive project to work, we need the people who want socialist things to happen to be able to get along with one another and utilise each other’s talents. Where all of our tireless work building these institutions facilitates each other’s political activism rather than seeks to outcompete with one another. It needs a socialist left that isn’t based on small groups in competition for influence over a wider movement which doesn’t exist. I don’t quite know how we’d get there, but I think the last 10 years has shown a lot of these parties (including what was the biggest sect of all, a left Labour Party) are not up to the task. Additionally, as things get worse and worse, we will have to rely more on each other in order to survive the repression the state is meting out on us. It is cliche but if we are to survive we have to learn to stick together.

VCC2: Initial Research - ‘Why?’
Why do we get tattoos in the first place?
Hagelstein, M., 2014. Exposition «Tatoueurs, tatoués»(Musée du Quai   Branly). Culture, le Magazine Culturel de l’Université de Liège.
‘Tattooing is finally and once and for all being recognised as a form of fine art. [...] There is currently a growing desire to work outside the traditional media [...] and situate the work itself in a wider context than what seemed possible beforehand’ - Marcia Tucker, Director of the New Museum NYC, 1981. Tattooing has become an art form in recent years, which will allow the imagery to symbolise abstract concepts, much like a painting might, rather than tattoos denoting exactly what they present.
Lambert, A. and Christ, M., 2003. Russian prison tattoos: Codes of authority, domination, and struggle. Schiffer Pub.
- ‘It is written on the body: rape, murder, robbery, addiction. In the former Soviet Union, the tattoos you wear in prison are your dossier. [...] They tell where you fit in the Byzantine caste system that makes up the unofficial administration of the modern day Gulag’. This concept of tattoos communicating to others your crime is an indicator that people get tattoos to outwardly show others through imagery their identities. Due to the lack of resources to give others tattoos in Russian prisons, they are often of poor quality, meaning that the reason for these ‘bad’ tattoos’ aesthetic is the environment - but why would someone intentionally in the modern day when tattooing is heavily regulated?
- ‘Our position is that we do not have any secrets’
- ‘The prison hitmen [...] wear the image of daggers piercing through skulls or through flesh to advertise their services.’
- Other than information the book provides, I really enjoy the style of the photography they’ve chosen to impliment when producing the book. The photographs of the prisoners and their tattoos are taken on either film or are stills from what appears to be a video recorder. These two styles of photography compliment one another really well, especially used in the context of the poor conditions within Soviet prisons as the quality of the photos are not clean and pristine, often blurry and poorly composed. For my personal presentation of ‘bad’ tattoos in my work, I could replicate this style of documenting them by using a poor quality digital camera or use film photography.
Netflix Explained: Tattoos
Tattoo anthropologists believe tattooing was an individual invention in many different places
The earliest recording of tattooing is 5,000 years old
Tattoos across cultures indicated and symbolised ‘coming of age, membership of a group, spiritual power’
The medium of tattoo symbolises great change or achievement in these ancient cultures, which feeds into our modern perceptions of tattoos having to have some form of meaning
Abrahamic religions often saw marks on the body as sinful, when colonisation happened, banning traditional tattooing became a good way to subjugate these people
Sailor tattoos often have iconography of initials, nautical themes and patriotic symbolism. These tattoos were encouraged in order to encourage a a sense of camaraderie amongst sailors. There were also aspects of being rewarded e.g a swallow represents every 5,000 nautical miles a sailor has traveled.
‘Getting tattooed didn’t mark you as one kind of person anymore’ 1972 referring to custom tattooing becoming a trend
In 1981, tattoo exposure sky rocketed when MTV was first launched
Western tattooing carries a largely memory-related element, in contrast to other cultures
Since the invention of instagram, the number of tattooed Americans has nearly doubled
Studies have shown that tattoos can boost self image and a significant improvement in self-esteem. Its an act of self-creation.

Secret States Chapter 14
Figuring Out America
America POV
A faint buzzing noise began pulling my mind out of sleep. My thoughts were muddled and I couldn't recognize the noise. Sleep kept it pulling down on my brain, and for once, I let it win. I began sinking deeper into sleep before I heard a voice. I groaned and moved my face into the pillow, trying to stay asleep.
"Dad. You need to wake up." The voice pierced into my tired mind and I began pulling open my eyes and lifting up my head, seeing NATO standing in my room.
"Nate?" I questioned, eyes drooping and my head dropping back towards the pillow. This is why I hated sleeping. I always felt so tired when I woke up. I'm NATO sighed.
"As much as I like making sure you sleep, now isn't the time. UN wants you to meet them and the other organizations to talk about you being a union." NATO explained. That woke me up slightly and I began pulling my body off the bed, rubbing at my still drooping eyes.
"Why? There were, and are countries that are technically unions too. Why do they want to see me?" I said as I stood up and yawned, before remembering what I had done before I fell asleep.
"Oh no." I said. I had cried on Maman. Now she was going to worry about me. My family was already suspicious enough after I freaked out about Uncle North asking about the 1860s. Now my family was going to be concerned for me.
What if they tried to help me? They would just see how much of a weak, worthless failure I am, and realize I'm not worth their time. If they find about any of this, I won't be able to prove Dad wrong. I didn't need anyone's help. I was fine on my own.
I couldn't be seen as weak. I couldn't. Sharing my difficult history would just make me seem weak. If they saw me as weak I wouldn't be able to protect my kids. I had failed to protect them too many times before. I had to be strong. I had to be unbreakable.
I was the United States of America. I wasn't allowed to be weak.
"Dad? Are you alright?" NATO asked. I nodded. NATO didn't look convinced, but he didn't question it.
"UN also asked for me to come with you. I'll meet you in your car when you're ready. Please don't fall back asleep." NATO said, walking out of my room.
I groaned. I didn't want to do UN's interrogation, but it's not like I had a choice. ——————————————————
UN's POV
I was waiting in an empty meeting room with the other unions, waiting for America to show up. I wanted to discuss America's claims, the fact that he was a union. He had the black eyes like the rest of us unions, but so did his state, New York, which makes me think that black eyes aren't just reserved to unions.
I looked up as America opened the door, not wearing sunglasses for once. While I had seen America's eyes before, it was brief, and quick. I don't think he liked showing them. NATO followed America, his father, into the room before they both took a seat at the table.
"So you know why you're here?" African Union, or AU asked. America nodded.
"How can you be a union?" ASEAN asked, jumping right into the questions, with the question I knew we all wanted the answer too. NATO snorted.
"Britain's a union to, kinda technically. Why are you so confused by Dad being one when Britain never kept the fact that he was a political union secret?" He questioned. I paused at his question.
I had never thought about that. Britain was a political union, but that was common knowledge, or at least public knowledge, so it was never a big deal. But America being a union was a secret. Not many countries knew about it.
That's what made it strange. America said it was because the states didn't want him to, and I understood that he probably couldn't argue against it. I knew that unions, depending on how much influence the countries or states or territories or whatever made them up, were sometimes at the mercy of what their parts decided.
Their decisions were the products of decisions their parts made, even if it wasn't what they personally believed. But America hadn't let anything slip about it he wanted to tell anyone. He seemed cautious about people knowing, but it could be concern for his states, his children, that caused it. Not because he wanted people to know.
America was always a bit of a private person. I always thought it was because of his isolation that other countries had told me about. How he spend almost a century ignoring people and doing his own thing. And even after being forced into global politics by the world wars and becoming a world power, I always though his want for privacy originated from that and the Cold War.
I never imagined any if this.
"We understand how Britain is a political union. We knew about that. We didn't know about America, and the way he works is different than America." EU said. NATO nodded, and looked towards America.
"I'm a union because I cannot be a country because I violate three requirements of a country, and my government follows the definition of a union more than it does the definition of a country. My constitution even refers to me as a union." America explained.
"What requirements of a country don't you follow?" Organization of American States, or OAS asked.
"Definite territory, sovereignty over an area, and one government, although I'm not really sure if the last one is a requirement, but I have over 350 governments, and I don't think a country is supposed to have that." America said, smiling slightly.
"350?!" Caribbean Community or CC questioned. That was a high number. I thought America only had 50 states, and his territories. Were some of the governments included town governments or something? There's no way America could have that many sovereign pieces.
"There is no way you have that many governments. Not even UN has that many governments." World Health Organization, or WHO (Yes we make fun of him for that name. Why wouldn't we?) cut it. America shrugged.
"Well I do." He said, amusement glinting in his eyes as he tried to hide the smile on his face, "I have my states, and then the tribes. There are 326 Native American reservations in my country. I have no power, or little power in those reservations. They're managed by one or more tribes, like Havasupai or Miccosukee."
"Your native people's countryhumans are alive?" OAS asked. America nodded.
"Thankfully." He said, his voice quiet. NATO puts his hand on America's shoulder and whispered something in his ear. America shook his head and NATO put his hand down and gave America-his father, a sad and resigned look.
What was that about? I didn't get a chance to think much on it before BRICS spoke up.
"How are you even considered a country if you have over 350 governments. How has no one seen all of those countryhumans?" He asked. America shrugged.
"You guys are idiots. Plus my children, or most of them at least, kept themselves hidden. The tribes don't stay in this world very often either. They never did before colonization, and with their history and cultures in risk of being lost forever, they'd rather spend time with their people keeping as much of their culture alive as possible." America explained.
That made since, from what I knew at least. I didn't know much about America's history, or the history of my parts, and learning about my different pieces was always something I enjoyed, especially since it was rare. Not many countries enjoyed talking about their past.
"Why don't you get involved with the reservations? It sounds like you get involved with the states frequently, but you've neglected to mention how you run the reservations." OAS asked
"That's like asking me why I don't govern Mexico. I'm not going to govern another nation." America said. I froze up. Did America recognize the reservations as independent nations? I had always prided myself on knowing the names of every country, and every who hoped to be a country, like Kosovo, who was still bugging me about her UN membership.
How did I miss 326 countryhumans that were recognized as nation by the nation they used to be a part of?
"I'm sorry, but did you say your Native American reservations were nations?" League of Arab States said. America raised a hand and shook it in a so-so motion before sighing.
"My government recognizes them as being domestic dependent nations. Basically independent, but also not. It's a weird and complicated relationship between my government and theirs. They don't hold any strong connections to the state or federal fovernment, which is a big reason for why they're considered separate entities." America explained.
"What about the states?" Nordic Council asked.
"The states and I share sovereignty. I handle things that involve the entire country, multiple states, and international things. The states handle internal things like education and whatnot on their own. That's why I couldn't  impose a federal quarantine when you were asking me to. That's not a power I have. It's one the states have. Quarantining was up to them and their governments." America explained.
Now I felt bad. I had been one of the people pressuring America the most to impose a federal quarantine. To find out that he wasn't able to do that makes me feel like an asshole. I had just been putting extra stress on America, and finding out about his children, that extra stress probably wasn't good for him.
"Seriously? What can you do then?" Union of South American Nations (USAN) asked. America laughed.
"In terms of what I control directly, not a lot. Congress, who is in charge of lawmaking, declaring war, making treaties, setting the federal budget and a whole lot more, is made up of people the the states elect. So Congress is more of the states than me. I can have some influence in Congress, but general decisions in Congress are based around what each senator and representative wants for their states." America explained.
That was common though. Decisions by unions were normally based around the countries deciding what action the union should take for its own best interests. America really did seem like a union. There where just little pieces that didn't make sense. America's states got no international relations, outside of what America chooses that is.
That wasn't something that happened in unions. While I do believe that America is a union, I also thing that he might not be a union in the same sense me and the other unions in this room where. But if that was true, what exactly was the United States of America?
I tuned back into the conversation as Arab Maghreb Union asked another question. I felt bad questioning America like this. He seemed uncomfortable with it, but that might just be because he had kept the very thing we're questioning him about secret. America was a very confusing person.
"What powers do you have, powers that are just yours and have nothing to do with your state?" Arab Maghreb Union asked.
"I don't have a lot. The executive branch is fully mine, but it's main purpose is enforcing the laws that the states decide in Congress. That branch, through the president, can veto laws, but mainly they enforce laws through the various government organizations like the FBI or the CIA. The only power that branch has that is not affected by Congress is executive orders, but those don't have the same effect as laws made by Congress do." America explained.
"Are you saying that you don't have any real power?"  Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) asked leaning forwards over the table. I saw a flash of fear in America's eyes that was quickly hidden by the disinterested look he's been wearing the entire meeting.
"I do have power. I just don't have full control over it. It's the same story for all of you." He snapped, becoming defensive. CELAC looked confused at America's reaction before her eyes widened in realization.
"Lo siento. It's just weird thinking of you as a union when I've, we've always thought of you as a country. I didn't mean any offense to you. It's a just big change, thinking of you as a union." She said.
"Nothing's changed that much." America said. Maybe not for him, but for us, a lot had. We were no strangers to countries being unions, USSR taught us that much, but America being one and keeping it secret was strange. Britain had also been around when America first became a country, so it's not he was the only country that was made up of states.
So why did he hid it? I know he said it was the states choice, but I think that's answer is bullshit. Sure, it might hold some truth, but it definitely wasn't the full reason.
"Maybe not for you, but for us a lot is different. Especially because you keep acting different and mature, instead of the incompetent idiotic fool you normally act like, no offense. We're not sure what to make of all this." Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIS) said.
"And how can you be a union if your states don't act like counties?" International Organization of Turkic Culture (TÜRKSOY) said.
"Because I'm not entirely a union. I also have characteristics of a country, and I'm also an empire. So I don't really know what the hell I am. I'm considered a country by other countries, I'm considered a union by my governments and my people, and I'm considered an empire because of my overseas territories." America explained.
"I though you said you were a union?" AU asked. America shrugged.
"I am. I'm just a lot of other things as well. I don't really know what I'm supposed to be. My states and I have always considered me a union, but the countries don't and consider me a country. And since I'm not like the rest of you and do have characteristics of a country, I am a union, just not the same kind of union as the rest of you." America explained before standing up.
"Where are you going?" BRICS asked.
"I'm done with this interrogation. I'm leaving." America said before leaving, NATO watching him before pulling out his phone.
"What are you doing?" USAN asked, tilting her head to the side.
"Calling someone." NATO said, "Dad's going to need it."
What did that mean?

The Artwoods Story
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Artwoods’ 100 Oxford Street is a UK compilation album released in 1983 that features a four-page booklet (pictured above) that tells the band’s story, written by guitarist Derek Griffiths.
Since there's a limit on the number of photos that can be added to one post, I'll be reblogging this a couple times until I have all the info up. To see this post with all the info added in reblogs, click here.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy Derek’s words as much as I do!
Transcript under the cut (main text + Record Mirror article from page three's rightmost side)
“  It's difficult to pinpoint exactly when the Artwoods came into being because everything just seemed to evolve naturally. The one date however that does stick in my mind is the 1st October 1964 which is the date I turned professional, thus depriving the accountancy profession of a valuable addition to its ranks! But seriously, one must go back to previous events in order to trace the history of the group.
I first met Jon Lord at a party in West Hampstead when he was a drama student at The Central School of Speech & Drama. He was introduced to me by Don Wilson whose claim to fame was his membership of the famous skiffle group Dickie Bishop & His Sidekicks. They had had a hit years previously with "No Other Baby But You", and Don now ran a band on a semi-pro basis called Red Bludd's Bluesicians in which I played guitar. Well, I say we were called this, but only when we were fortunate enough to cop an R&B gig. We used to play The Flamingo Allnighter and lots of U.S. air bases. The rest of the time we played weddings and tennis club dances as The Don Wilson Quartet! Jon Lord was brought in on piano and was a very valuable addition especially as he could get his hands around a little jazz and all the old standards. Jon used to ring me at work and interrupt my vouching of sales ledger invoices in order to discuss the coming weekends gigs. We would bubble with excitement at the approach of an R&B gig as we really hated all the weddings and barmitzvahs.
Around this time Don made a very important policy decision and we suddenly became the proud owners of a Lowrey Holiday organ for Jon to play. Shortly after this Don contrived to drive the band-wagon into the back of a lorry on the North Circular, doing himself considerable mischief in the process. This brought about the unfortunate end of Don's career with us, but not before he had masterminded an important merger of two local bands.
For some time we had been aware, and not a little envious, of The Art Wood Combo led by none other than Art Wood himself. His band underwent a split at that time and Red Bludd's Bluesicians, alias The Don Wilson Quartet, were neatly grafted on. We really felt we were moving into the big league by doing this as Art not only had more work than us but, wait for it, used to sing with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated with Charlie Watts on drums and Cyril Davies on harmonica! The next problem was a replacement for Don, and this was solved by stealing the bass player from another local group The Roadrunners, a good looking cove who went by the name of Malcolm Pool. The offer and acceptance of the gig were transacted in a pub car park somewhere in West Drayton staring into the murky waters of the Grand Union Canal clutching pints of local bitter (Fullers?). (Authors note: drugs had not been invented at this stage, as far as most groups were concerned, apart from the odd pill to keep one awake on an all nighter!)
~
The next personnel change took place some time in 1964 and this involved the retirement of drummer Reg Dunnage, who did not want to turn pro. Auditions were held in London and lots of drummers attended. However it was more or less a foregone conclusion that Keef Hartley would get the job. You see we'd already decided that what The Artwoods needed above all else was a Liverpool drummer! Unfortunately none came to the audition, but Keef hailed from Preston which was near enough for us. Keef had previously played with Rory Storm & The Hurricanes, replacing Ringo Starr in the process (heady stuff this), and Freddy Starr & The Midnighters. Both were such influential bands of their time that these credentials combined with Keef's quasi Liverpool accent (at least to our ears) provided him with a faultless pedigree.
~
So that was it, the line-up that would take us through to 1967 when Colin Martin eventually replaced Keef Hartley on drums.
For a while we worked as The Art Wood Combo but then decided it was hipper to drop the Combo and become The Artwoods.
The period when The Artwoods were operating was one of musical change when groups went from recording and performing other writers' material to writing their own. In fact the last year of the group's existence was 1967 which heralded the arrival of "Hendrix", "Flower-Power". "Festivals" and experimental use of mind expanding drugs! 1966/67 were particularly exciting years to be based in London and every night would be spent in one of the many clubs which had recently sprung up. The Ad Lib, The Scotch of St. James, The Cromwellian, Blaises and of course The Speakeasy to mention a few. Many of these we played in and the trick was to be well known enough not to have to pay the entrance fee on nights off. Any night you could be sure to meet your mates "down The Speak" and it became the unofficial market place for rock musicians.
It was also the days before huge amounts of equipment took over. Equipment meant road-crew and trucks and in turn financial hardship. This simple equation has been the downfall of many bands over the years. We used to travel in a 15 cwt van together with all the gear-no roadies, just us. It's amusing to recall but after recording the TV show "Ready, Steady, Go" (in Kingsway in those days?) one would be besieged by autograph hunters on the way to the van with the gear. Even really 'big groups of the day like The Zombies would hump their own equipment and apologetically place an amp on the ground in order to sign an autograph! Because it was financially viable to travel to small clubs in this way, we would often average 6 or 7 nights a week, every week, on the road. A bad month would probably mean less than twenty gigs. This meant we were living, sleeping and eating in close, and I mean close, proximity. You really found out who your friends were.
The subject of equipment is an interesting one as it really distinguishes the bands then from those of today. The average pub band of today would carry more equipment than we did. As I've already mentioned we were quick to realise that we could elevate ourselves musically by investing in a proper electric organ as opposed to a Vox Continental or Farfisa that many groups used. Consequently the group purchased a Lowrey Holiday and we thought this alone would provide us with the Booker T and Jimmy Smith sound.
What we failed to realize was that we also needed a Leslie cabinet with a special built-in rotor to get that "wobbly" sound. Our friend and mentor Graham Bond, the legendary organist/saxophonist, was quick to point out the error of our ways one night when we were gigging at Klooks Kleek in West Hampstead. We groaned inwardly when we discovered the extra cost and humping involved, but it had to be bought. We were fortunate very early on to score a deal with Selmers, who provided us with free amps and P.A., but we had to make the trek to Theobalds Road once a week to get it all serviced as they were not as reliable in those days. I used a Selmer Zodiac 50 watt amp and Malcolm had Goliath bass cabinets with a stereo amp.
The P.A. comprised two 4 x 12 cabinets and a 100 watt amp! When we toured Poland we played in vast auditoria and linked our system with the Vox system being used on tour by Billy J Kramer & The Dakotas. This meant we were pumping out no more than 300 watts which is laughable by today's standards. Although it would never have compared in quality, I can remember standing at the back of extremely large halls and being able to hear clearly all the words Billy J sang. One day in 1963 Alexis Korner sent me off foraging in and around Charing Cross Road for a new guitar, with instructions to mention his name whereupon I would receive a discount of 10%. Previously I played a Burns Trisonic (collectors will appreciate this model did not have "Wild Dog" treble) but fancied owning a Gibson ES335 as favoured by many blues players. Sure enough one was hanging invitingly in the window of Lew Davis's shop.
I ended up paying £135 and still use it regularly today although its value has multiplied five fold. Malcolm came with me that day and bought an Epiphone bass, the same colour and shape as my guitar. For years we looked like matching book-ends on either end of the group! Keef started off using a Rodgers drum kit, but somewhere along the line changed to, I think, Ludwig. There was no out-front mixing as is common today, just the P.A. amp on stage with the vocalist. Primitive I know, but everything revolved around bands being able to travel economically with their gear and perform at small clubs anywhere in Britain. The college circuit was much sought after and provided the icing on the cake while package tours were not necessarily well paid. We did our first with P. J. Proby and got £25 per night (for the lot of us) and we had to pay for our own accommodation!
~
I have already mentioned "Ready, Steady, Go" a show on which we appeared on more than one occasion. The original format called for groups to mime to their records but after a time it was decided that it would become "live" and that the show would be re-titled "Ready Steady Goes Live". We were proud to be picked for the first "live" show and learnt the news via a telephone call to our agent in London from a phone box high in the Pennines. We managed a drunken war-dance of celebration round the phone box believing that this meant we'd really cracked it. As I remember the first show we did featured Tom Jones (complete with lucky rabbits foot) miming to "It's Not Unusual", The Kinks, Donovan and Adam Faith's Roulettes playing live (without Adam). We were promoting our first single "Sweet Mary" and I would put the date at around late 1964.
~
Our first recording deal was with a subsidiary of Southern Music Publishing called Iver Productions and I reckon that would have been mid 1964. Southern had a four track studio in the basement of their offices in Denmark Street ("The Street") and getting the gear downstairs, especially the organ, was "murder". Our first producer was Terry Kennedy and we recorded several tracks with him. Without going too deeply into all the details of recording techniques of the period, one tended to compensate for the lack of tracking facilities available, by attempting to duplicate the live excitement. In many ways it was a frustrating experience particularly for ambitious guitar-players. I was a Steve Cropper freak and I knew as a musician that a lot of his sound on record resulted from him working his amplifier hard in the studio— thus the speaker would emit the sound he was used to on stage. In Britain however, engineers would say "You don't need to play loud man, we can turn you up on the desk". The result was a weedy, thin guitar sound. From way back I'd been experimenting with "feed back" on stage and I really had to dig my heels in about the guitar sound in the studio. Once when I turned my amp up to give it a bit of "wellie" on a solo the engineer bounded out of the control room screaming that the level would bust his microphones!
~
Sometime during the career of The Artwoods it was decided that we should graduate to a better studio. This was arranged by Mike Vernon who also became our producer. Our records had all been released through the Decca Record Co. and Mike was a staff producer with them. Mike w also an authority on "The Blues" and the relationship led to our only single chart record "I Take What I Want" a cover of a Sam & Dave U.S. R&B hit. Mike was also producing John Mayall at the time and it seemed only natural that Mike and The Artwoods should team up. From this point on we recorded at the Decca studio in Broadhurst Gardens, West Hampstead, but I can't honestly say it did any more for us than our previous efforts in the Southern Music basement, although we could now indulge ourselves in the comparative luxury of the eight track studio. Later on, towards the end of the groups life we were signed by Jack Baverstock at Philips Records who was looking for a group to cash in on the thirties-style gangster craze which had been triggered off by the film "Bonnie & Clyde". As a result we changed our name to "St. Valentines Day Massacre" and released a single of the old Bing Crosby hit "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" It was an ill- fated venture, which I would prefer not to dwell on, virtually signalling the end of the band apart from a few heavy-hearted gigs with a changed line-up.
~
Before that though, there were many great times to remember, and a fair number of gigs that were memorable in one way or another.
One of our favourite gigs was Eel Pie Island which we regularly played once a month; in fact we held the attendance record there for a while until the ageing blues artist Jesse Fuller took it from us. Eel Pie Island is literally an island in the middle of the River Thames at Twickenham and there's never been a gig like it since. It was an Edwardian ballroom originally I believe, that achieved notoriety in the 50's with the Trad Jazz boom. At that time, an overloaded chain ferry was used to convey the crowd across the river, but during the 60's a small bridge was in existence although it was only wide enough to take the promoter Art Chisnall's mini van. He had to make three separate trips across with the gear strapped to the roof and hanging out the back doors.
The audiences were exceptional for those times and I don't know where they all came from... very much like art students and very much more like the 70's than 60's. Long hair predominated and this was before 'hippies' had officially been invented! If you can imagine a ramshackle wooden ballroom, bursting at the seams, condensation pouring from the walls, the audience on each others shoulders leaping up and down, the sprung dance floor bending alarmingly in the middle, in the summer couples strolling outside and lounging on the river bank ... all this and not a disc jockey in sight! One other bonus was that it was a “free” house and therefore sold many different types of beer— we always favoured Newcastle Brown. Back on the 'mainland' afterwards it was always riotous packing the gear into the truck. I don't know how he managed it but one night Malcolm drove our truck over the support band's guitar which happened to be lying about, thus breaking the neck. I'll never forget the shocked look on that poor guitarist's face as Malcolm smoothly slipped the van into gear, apologised and drove off in that order!
~
No trip up north was complete without stopping at the famed Blue Boar on the M1 for a "grease-up" on the way home. I do not refer to truck lubrication but to a particular rock'n'roll delicacy known as “full-house”. This comprised double egg, sausage, chips, beans, tomatoes, fried slice, tea, and (if you were man enough) toast. It was considered a Herculean task to break successfully the 10 bob' (50p) barrier-all served on wobbly cardboard plates that doubled as items to sign autographs on for the self service waitresses.
Waitress: What band are you?
Me: You won't have heard of us.
Waitress: Oh go on, tell us.
Me: OK. The Artwoods.
Waitress: Never 'eard of you!
It was everybody’s dream to walk into the Blue Boar just as their hit of the moment was playing on the Juke Box.
~
One time we were chosen to represent the twentieth century at the centenary celebrations of the State of Monte Carlo— a most lavish affair which the aristocracy and dignatories of Europe attended. Princess Grace and Prince Ranier were the hosts and people like Gina Lollobrigida and the like were there. The ball was held in the famous Casino at Monte Carlo and we stayed in an opulent hotel called The Hermitage, I think. All I can remember is that we all had single rooms (a rare luxury) which were massive, and you could have pitched a tent under one of the bath towels, they were so big. After this we jetted off up to Paris where we played next door to the Moulin Rouge at a club called The Locomotive.
Whilst we were there we were taken out by our friend Mae Mercer, the American lady blues singer who we backed in England. She lived in Paris and took us out to Memphis Slim's club where we all set about drinking like it was going out of style. At the end there was an embarrassing scene concerning the bill with the result that Mae ended up in tears. Whilst we were bumbling about in an alcoholic stupor, an upright looking gentleman put his arm round Mae to comfort her and a wallet appeared magically from his inside pocket. Without further ado the bill was despatched and we later learned that our anonymous benefactor was none other than Peter O'Toole who was busy in the street outside filming 'Night Of The Generals' and was an old buddy of Mae's.
~
One Boxing Day we loaded up with turkey sandwiches and Xmas pudding and headed off for a gig down in Devon or Cornwall somewhere. We arrived to find the club closed and boarded up, and as usual we were broke. Naturally we were livid, checked into an hotel and located the promoter who lived with his mum. Next morning we drove round to where he lived and burst our way past his confused mum. We found him in his bedroom nervously cowering against some fruit machines which he collected. He had no money so we forced him to empty his damned machines with the result that we drove back to London with 50 quids' worth of 'tanners' (approx 22p for the younger reader!)
Whilst on the subject of disasters I suppose I am duty bound to mention Denmark. The first time we went there we caught the ferry to the continent, drove up through Germany, then caught another ferry to Denmark. There was no promoter to meet us when we arrived so all we could do was drive to Copenhagen and check in at the Grand Hotel. It cost us an arm and a leg but at least we got a good nights sleep after being awake for nearly two days travelling. The next day we made a few phone calls and finally tracked down the promoter. He said: "Didn't you get my telegram cancelling the tour?" We politely said no we hadn't and what did he intend doing with us? He checked us into another hotel (cheaper of course) and set about booking us at places that were similar to English coffee bars and youth clubs. We made enough to survive on and paved the way to more successful tours of that country. In fact by now we had Colin Martin on drums and were pursuing a much more adventurous musical policy and writing our own material. It was just right for Denmark who had taken Hendrix to their hearts to name but one, and we subsequently became quite big there in 1967.
The Artwoods achieved modest success-a minor hit single in "I Take What I Want", but we worked constantly, travelled abroad, had fantastic fun and made a living doing so. We had seven single releases, one album, and one EP, and we broadcast both on radio and TV many times. We did stage tours such as the P. J. Proby tour and covered most aspects of "show-biz" apart from actually making a movie. It was the era when bands still had to prove themselves as a live act before being offered a recording contract. now frequently happens of course that an act can become huge record sellers without so much as venturing to do a live gig.
~
So what happened to everyone? Well Art returned to his former occupation as a commercial artist and finds some time to fit in free-lance work between accompanying brother Ron Wood on raving excursions between Rolling Stones gigs. Malcolm moved into the same field as Art and they now work in the same building. Both of them gig occasionally on a semi-pro basis although Malcolm spent some time playing with Jon Hiseman's Colosseum and Don Partridge in the early 70's. Jon Lord became famous with Deep Purple and Whitesnake as did Keef Hartley with John Mayall and various bands of his own. Colin Martin is now a BBC Radio producer of repute. I played in various bands such as Lucas and The Mike Cotton Sound, Colin Blunstone's band, Dog Soldier (with Keef again), before I somehow drifted into studio and theatre work. Recently I formed an R'n'B band called the G.B. Blues Company, and it's great to be back on the road again.   ”

Clipping from Record Mirror on June 5, 1965, by Norman Jopling.
“We aim to excite!” … say the Art Woods
Just for the record, the Art Woods aren't a part of Epping Forest. In fact they're a group of five interesting young men, named after the group's leader Art Wood. They also happen to be one of the most realistic groups on the scene.
For a start, they are the awkward position of having a large following, a club residency but no hit record. Secondly. they don't mind pandering to commercial tastes, even though they have been hailed as one of the most authentic R & B groups in the land.
NO PULL
“But authentic R&B just isn't pulling the crowds any more,” says Art. “The audiences want to be excited, not to be lectured on what is 'good' and what is 'bad'. Although there was a time when you could spend half an hour on one number with long solos by everybody, it didn't last long. And although there are some clubs like that still, most of them want something fresh and new.
“And we try to cater for them. We like authentic R&B, but we also like playing everything and anything else. So far, our two discs haven't meant a light. Of course we'd love a hit. But we're lucky enough to make a good living without one.”
DISCS
The Art Woods latest disc is "Oh My Love" and the one before that “Sweet Mary”. Of them Little Walter has said that he couldn't believe any white group could sing and play the blues like they do.
Line-up of the group is Art Wood, leader. vocalist and harmonica. Derek Griffiths, lead guitar, Jon Lord, organ and piano. Malcolm Pool— base guitar, and Keef Hartley on drums. The boys use a specially adapted Lowrie organ, and get a sound that's really different.
But even if the boys sometimes become depressed about no hits records, they should remember groups like Cliff Bennett, the Barron-Knights, the Rockin' Berries and the Yardbirds, and how long THEY waited before they had a hit!

OK, I'LL TELL YOU YOU ABOUT SHOW
And being rapacious not only doesn't help you do that, but probably hurts. It seemed the essence of cool, as any writing should, by what it says, not who wrote it. And present union leaders are any less courageous. They can work on projects with an intensity in both senses that few insiders can match. Show features in an order driven by some kind of preamble. For example, correcting someone's grammar, or harping on minor mistakes in names or numbers. When you negotiate terms with a startup, it's easier for competitors too. If there's one piece of advice I would give about writing essays, it would be a mistake to talk to corp dev unless a you want to do is write checks. Not all rich people got that way from startups, of course, have to change and keep changing their whole infrastructure, because otherwise the headers would look as bad to the Bayesian filters as ever, no matter what your lifespan was.1 I say languages have to be able to filter out most present-day spam, because spam evolves.2 Someone responsible for three of the best writers would be excluded for having offended one side or the other.
He's a senator. It may work, but it feels young because it's full of rich people, it has to be better if the people with more knowledge have more power. One thing we'll need is support for the new is exactly what you want than it would take to write it yourself, then all that code is doing nothing but make your manual thick. This is now starting to happen, not to make the medicine go down. In effect, this structure gives the investor a free option on the next round, when customers compare your actual products. As I've written before, one byproduct of technical progress is that things we like tend to become more addictive. But I don't see how we could replace founders. If new ideas arise like doodles, this would explain why you have to join a syndicate, though. VCs feel they need the power that comes with board membership to ensure their money isn't wasted. Well, I suppose we'd consider it, for the average engineer, more options just means more rope to hang yourself. But the way this problem ultimately gets solved may not be an absolute rule, but it is not entirely a coincidence that the word Republic occurs in Nigerian scam emails, and also occurs once or twice in spams referring to Korea and South Africa.
I would give about writing essays, it would not. Imagine, for example. That's what you're looking for. At sixteen I was about as observant as a lump of rock. The first time I met Jerry Yang, we thought we were meeting so he could check us out in person before buying us. And the only thing you can least afford. I end up with two large hash tables, one for each corpus, mapping tokens to number of occurrences. Above all, make a habit of asking questions, especially questions beginning with Why. Microsoft, actually.3 But for obvious reasons no one wanted to give that answer. Its fifteen most interesting words are as follows: let g 2 or gethash word good 0 b or gethash word bad 0 unless g b 5 max. They're not very common, but the word madam never occurs in my legitimate email, and whatever was found on the site could be included in calculating the probability of the email being a spam, whereas sexy indicates.
But I don't think many people realize there is a significant correlation. The nature of the business means that you want to write essays at all. But their tastes can't be quite mainstream either, because they pick later, when I had time to reread them more closely. Designing systems of great mathematical elegance sounds a lot more appealing to most of us than pandering to human weaknesses. Most investors know this m. Empirically that seems to work. We often tell startups to release a minimal version one quickly, then let your mind wander is like doodling with ideas. What makes a good founder? I sat down to write them. The 20th best player, causing him not to worry about money. But they were expensive compared to what corp dev does and know they don't want to; you could just show a randomly truncated slice of life, and that would be a good painter, and b means they can supply advice and connections as well as teach.
But a competitor that managed to avoid facing it. But at most valuation caps: caps on what the effective valuation will be when the debt converts to stock at the next sufficiently big funding round. You look at spams and you think, the gall of these guys to try sending me mail that begins Dear Friend or has a subject line that's all uppercase and ends in eight exclamation points. MIT, Stanford, Berkeley, and Carnegie-Mellon? I'm talking to companies we fund? Don't be evil. It must be something you can learn. Which caused yet more revenue growth for Yahoo, and further convinced investors the Internet was worth investing in. At Rehearsal Day, one of the founders is an expert in some specific technical field, it can be good for writing server-based software, surprisingly, is continuations. But it does seem as if Google was a collaboration.4 Another big factor was the fear of Microsoft.
VCs, whose current business model requires them to invest large amounts, and a human who doesn't is doing a bad job of being human—is no better than an animal. Startup School. This kind of focus is very valuable, actually. I stopped wondering about it. A probability can of course be mistaken, but because the space of possibilities is so large. If you have any kind of data structure, like window systems, simulations, and cad programs. You can afford to be passive. What is our purpose? The author is a self-sustaining.5
Notes
A knowledge of human nature, might come from. Different kinds of content. 39 says that a their applicants come from all over, not economic inequality. Few technologies have one clear inventor.
Unless of course, but you should probably pack investor meetings with So, can I count you in a signal. If there's an Indian grocery store near you, what you have the determination myself. The closest we got to Yahoo, we should be working on such an interview, I'd open our own startup Viaweb, Java applets were supposed to be something you can describe each strategy in terms of the magazine they'd accepted it for you by accidents of age and geography, rather than risk their community's disapproval.
Companies often wonder what to outsource and what the valuation at the end of the founders realized.
Most people let them mix pretty promiscuously. Instead of the biggest successes there is one of them.
To talk to a partner, which would be possible to make a conscious effort to be evidence of a safe will be inversely proportional to the next legitimate email was a kid most apples were a handful of lame investors first, and on the other seed firms always find is that the site.
Thanks to David Sloo, Dan Friedman, Joel Lehrer, and Paul Buchheit for inviting me to speak.

Breathe with me. Chapter 19
Tumblr media
Chaptere 18 here
Hana entered her room and threw  Masquerade mask on the bed. She was more excited than usual but also very stressed. For a months following that night when Liam threw her away like a broken toy, she was trying to find something that would destroy his marriage. He didn't look at her once since she came back to court and Hana was smart enough to understand that she doesn't attract him anymore. But would it change, she will take any opportunity. Despite the pain he caused, despite his disinterest in her, she loved him desperately and couldn't imagine a better thing in this life than to be by his side, to be held by him like once before and to be loved back.
And now, after months she spent, desperately looking for a tiniest hint of scandal, tiniest weakness in Liam's privacy, she finally heard something interesting.
If Muhammad doesn't come to a mountain then a mountain will come to Muhammad. I might never get another chance so I must to orchestrate the situation, to make sure that there will be a scandal that will ruin this marriage. But how? Good thing that I can use Rashad but this is not enough. Maybe if I had someone who is close to Liam all the time. I need someone who will give me the information. So far I have nothing.
Hana found her phone under pile of clothes and dialed a number.
-Good morning, father. I hope I didn't wake you up.
-Good morning, Hana. No, you didn't. I am already working. Everything is fine? - she heard reply.
Hana knew that her father didn't like when she called for no reason and even more than that he hated his work to be interrupted so she went straight to the point.
-Father, I need a help. Dad, it's very important. Can you find a way to bribe one of Liam's bodyguards or something?
-Liam? As a king of Cordonia? Hana, my girl, why do you need me to bribe one of his bodyguards? First of all, this is impossible. Second, I don't like sound of that. Have you lost your mind? What do you want to do to Liam?
-I am not going to do anything to Liam and I haven't lost my mind. It's opposite. I want to do what you sent me here for.  - Hana replied to her father.
-We sent you there to find a good match, Hana. The King is married already so you must focus on Lord Rashad. That's why you were sent back to the court.
-And what if I tell you that I can change that? - Hana was desperate to convince her father. Without her parents help she was designed to fail. She had no needed connections.
-Is that a possibility, Hana? Do you think that its possible? You failed when he was single and looking for a bride. What makes you think that you can succeed now when he is married? - There was confusion in Mr. Lee voice.
-Now he doesn't have Constantine to make choices for him, dad. - Hana was bluffing and she knew it. Even without Constantine she was far from conquesting Liam.
-We can't talk about it on the phone, my child - Mr. Lee replied after a minute.-Come home so we can discuss everything.
-OK, father… - Hana started but was interrupted.
-No, me and your mother will come to Cordonia. If what you are saying is possible, I need to be there and see what I can do.
Hana said goodbye to her father and unzipped a dress. On a bright side, she already had a friend in Madeleine's entourage and Penelope was clueless enough to become Hana's tool.
***
Madeleine was sitting in front of the mirror  removing make up. She was restless, a desire was driving her crazy but there was no way to satisfy it right now. Finally she was done, Madeleine rubbed night cream into her skin and grabbed  phone to check a schedule. Adjusting to the role of Queen kept her busy and somewhat distracted from what her body needed.
According to her schedule, this week her and Liam had to attend European Union leaders summit in Paris. While Liam would be meeting with presidents and prime ministers, she would be stuck with their wives smiling for the pictures. But at least she will have nights all for herself.
That's my last chance before I am getting pregnant.
After that it will be to dangerous for a baby.
Liam wasn't kidding when he said that her funds will be very limited but she had money from her estate.
Just this one time. Luck is on my side, Paris is the place I need. It won't be cheap but I can't resist. Time to renew my membership.
Madeleine walked to the bedroom, got in her bed and turned off the lamp. Her fingers touched a swollen bud and she moaned loudly.
***
Meanwhile in New York Lina just came home after having coffee with Thomas. They met right after she called him and Lina suspected that he had to cancel a few meetings for it but she wasn't sure.
She felt very awkward at first but Thomas didn't touch any sensitive subjects and after thirty minutes it felt like a meeting of two friends.
Lina didn't love him, her heart belonged to Liam but just now she realized that she was missing him. The evenings they spent in his apartments talking about anything and everything, that feeling of stability he was giving her. But at the same time Lina knew that it would be cruel to string him along. He needed to forget about her and the best way to do it was to never see her again. With a heavy heart Lina said that it's their last meeting. He needed closure and she gave it to him.
Lina took a quick shower, changed and then got a phone out of her purse. It was dead, she forgot to charge it a night before. She wondered if Liam tried to call her while her phone was dead but laughed at herself. Wistful thinking. He hasn't called her for days and it made her to feel forgotten and neglected. At least she could comfort herself imagining that he tried to call her but her phone was dead.
She plugged the charger in, waited a minute and turned the phone on. In thirty seconds the screen lighted up and Lina entered her pin. Almost immediately the phone in her hand buzzed and she saw Liam's picture on the screen but before she could answer the call, the phone went dead again. She put it in the night table and sat on the bed. Her heart was beating so fast that she heard every beat. A happiness washed over her.
He didn't forget about me. He called.
But as quick as it came, her happiness was replaced with disgust.
Lina was disgusted with herself. It took only seeing his name on the screen to make her a completely happy person. She realized what a huge power over her he has now.
This is really scary. God, I am so scared. He isn't mine, he is many kilometers away hidden behind palace walls and bodyguards. He can toss me away any second and I'll never see him again. Who am I in his life? Just a toy he can play with for a few months? For a year? Or maybe he doesn't want me anymore? He can have any woman he wants. How will I survive it? Will I survive it when he will want to move on? Or maybe that's what he wants now.
He had a power to smash her heart into million pieces  and she will never be able to gather those pieces together again, she just knew it somehow. Right in this moment she realized that this is it, her "once in lifetime" love. Even if they spent together only one month, it was enough to make Liam a center of Lina's universe.
With a shaking hand she reached for her phone and tried to turn it on again. The battery was at ten percent already so she dialed Liam's number.
Liam answered  almost immediately.
-Lin, are you alright? - she heard his voice even before she had time to say hello.
-Yes, yes I am. And you?
-Not so good- he replied. - Your phone was off, then you declined my call so I was worried. Mara wouldn't tell me anything.
Lina giggled quietly.
-Did you call her? Because I sent her home after an interview.
-What interview? - Liam asked, there was a concern in his voice for some reason.
-Job interview. I had one earlier today. Haven't Mara told you?
-No, she refused to say anything about you. Said that I gave her some order not to report to me.
Lina giggled again.
-Well, anyway, this interview went really well and I am hoping to have this job. Then Mara can return to Cordonia because there is no way she would follow me to my work. - Lina said remembering her earlier decision to put an end to this elitarist madness. She wasn't some kind of celebrity to be followed by bodyguards.
-Mara is not returning to Cordonia. If you don't want to have her with you all the time that's alright. But at least allow her to be there, just in case of emergency. It's a life, baby. Anything could happen.
-Okay, she can stay here as my roommate then. This place is to big for me anyway. - Lina was glad that she managed to solve this so quick. There was no point to insist for Mara to leave. They hardly ever met inside of penthouse, Mara's room was in another wing. - So enough about me. How are you doing for real?
Lina heard Liam's breath, like something was waging him.
-I am okay I guess. The Masquerade is wrapping up right now, I left early.
-A Masquerade-Lina repeated. - Sounds fancy. Did you have fun?
-It was okay but honestly, I wish I could skip it and talk to you instead. And sleep for some twenty hours after. - His voice really did sound tired.
Lina closed her eyes enjoying the sound  of his voice. She missed him so much. She wanted nothing more but to be held by him again, just to put her head on his chest and listen to his heartbeat.
I wish. He won't be returning to me after hard day at work like it happens with everyone else.
Lina snapped out of her thoughts.
-Baby are you there? - she heard Liam asking.
-Yes I am, sorry. What did you say?
-I said that I might come to New York in two weeks.
Lina's heart dropped. Two weeks. It was too long. She needed to see him sooner, much sooner.
-That's great. - she couldn't   hide disappointment in her voice but Liam interpreted it in his own way.
-You don't sound to happy about it.- his voice now mirrored hers, full of disappointment.
-I am. I'll be glad to see you. - Lina held her tongue back, she didn't want to sound desperate. Anything to hide how desperately she missed him.
-Me too. I miss you. I really do. - Liam added quietly and Lina's heart melted a bit, he sounded so sincere.
-Me too, Liam. I miss you too.
They spoke a bit longer but Liam sounded so tired that Lina finished a call sending him to get some sleep.
Next morning a phone call woke Lina up. Without looking at callers ID she picked up and heard female voice in the other end.
-Good morning, miss Andrews. It's Rebecca Mason from Nixon Technologies.
Lina sat straight in her bed trying to sound like she woke up hours ago and not just now.
-Good morning, miss Mason.
-Your candidature was approved. Thought not for a position you originally applied for.
Lina rubbed her eyes in confusion.
-What does it mean?-she asked.
-You see, miss Andrews, there was a situation. To keep it short, mister Nixon needs to replace his assistant and he approved your resume for it.
Lina gasped. Even she knew that Nixon from Nixon Technologies had to be some nob on the very top.
-But I wasn't applying for assistant position. I don't even have a necessary experience.
-Nevertheless the position is yours, Miss Andrews.
Lina wanted to pinch herself to check if she was still sleeping and all of it was just a dream.
-Who is mister Nixon anyway? - she asked.
There was a few moments of silence on the other end before woman answered.
-Mister Nicholas Nixon, a chief executive officer of Nixon Technologies, miss Andrews. - there was less patience in woman's voice now. - So are you interested?
Lina doubted for only a few seconds. After so many failures she finally got a job and not just any job. She had to try. Even if she will fail, at least she tried.
-Yes, yes I am. When do you need me to start? - Lina said quickly.
-Yesterday, miss Andrews. The sooner is better. Normally you would have two weeks before you could take the position but mister Nixon can not exist without assistant for so long. Could you start tomorrow?
-Yes of course. - Lina discussed some details and finished a call.
Immediately she opened Google on her phone and searched the name. She scrolled through several articles and images and rolled her eyes. Hundreds of pictures from charity galas and other red carpet events, always with different women. Not even two pictures with the same one. She wasn't surprised though. Who could resist such a man?
Great, she will be working for famous New York playboy.
***
Liam was sitting on a boring meeting with his cabinet of ministers preparing for a Paris summit. He didn't need to listen to them because he heard all of it a hundred times before and read it all in their reports to him but years of training were paying off, he was nodding in all right moments and asking all the right questions even if he knew the answer already. Every minister thought that his area of responsibility is the most important one and his matters should be brought up first and discussed with one or another European leader. But Liam wasn't going to discuss any of that with any of the leaders. It was all internal affairs of Cordonia, he was going to keep his country independent as much as its possible in current global political situation. Economically the country was thriving thanks to his father and Liam was going to follow his steps keeping at heart only interest of his people, no ones else.
Finally the meeting was over and Liam raised from his chair. He walked through long palace halls to his study and opened a door to see Drake pacing the floor nervously.
-Drake? Is everything alright? - Liam asked concerned for his friend.
-I don't know. - Drake answering stopping to pace just long enough to look at Liam. - I found a lead.
-A lead? - Liam asked confused.
-I know where Savannah can be. - Drake answered impatiently.
Liam smiled and crossed the room to his chair.
-That's great, Drake. Finally. So where is she?
-I think that she is in Paris. You are going there this week, right? - Drake asked hopefully.
-Yes, we are heading there tomorrow night.
Drake's shoulders dropped. He was clearly impatient to check this lead but feared to do this alone.
-But we can leave in two hours. I can clear my schedule. There is nothing that can't wait till next week.-Liam continued.
-Yes! - Drake was almost yelling by now.
-Very well.
Liam dialed his secretary number.
-Stavros, let Bastien know that we are heading to Paris in two hours. Also cancel all my meetings and let her Majesty know that her and her ladies in waiting must be ready by then. Also warn a staff in my Paris residence that we are arriving earlier than expected.
-Yes, Sire. - he heard a reply and finished a call.
***
Hana was walking palace corridor when she saw staff hurriedly carrying bags from Liam's and Madeleine wing of the palace. She knew that they shouldn't leave until tomorrow.
Hana stopped one of the footman and asked him what's going on.
-Their Majesties are leaving early, Mylady. - footman answered and hurried away.
Hana wondered if this change of plans had anything to do with conversation she overheard last night on Masquerade.
It could be. Liam might be impatient to see what Paris has to offer him. Anyway I must be there.
Hana hurried to her room and pulled an app on her phone. She checked when the next flight to Paris leaves. It was in four hours from now. Enough time to pack a bag and get to airport. Hana booked a place in the first class and called a maid to prepare her bag. She didn't need to pack much. Anything she lacks could be bought there. The only thing she really wanted couldn't be packed or bought.

President Donald Trump fumed in his remarks to the press last week: “What they’ve done is a disgrace, and I hope a big price is going to be paid. A big price should be paid. There’s never been anything like this in the history of our country...”Trump’s fury wasn’t directed at Russia’s interference in the U.S. elections, but instead at the Obama administration’s efforts to investigate the Kremlin’s malign operations. And his account of a phone call earlier in the day with Russian President Vladimir Putin suggests—as the Kremlin quickly inferred—that as Trump confidently wraps up the “Russia hoax,” Putin can be confident Trump’s in his corner, if not in his pocket. There’s Nothing Generous About Putin’s Coronavirus Aid to US
During that phone call, as Trump told reporters, he told Putin the investigation of Russia’s interference in the U.S. elections by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller was a “Russia hoax.” And since Russia is under heavy economic U.S. sanctions for its election-meddling, such a dismissive description would seem a clear signal Trump wants that restrictive regime to come to an end. If there was no meddling and it was all part of a conspiracy by Barack Obama, why would you punish the falsely accused Putin?Trump’s remarks, coming amid a flurry of questions about COVID-19 at a press opportunity with the governor of Texas, had started with a musing about sharing ventilators with Moscow, then Trump pivoted to elaborate on a theme mentioned nowhere in the official readouts of the call by the White House or the Kremlin.“And that was a very nice call,” said Trump. “And remember this: The Russia hoax made it very hard for Russia and the United States to deal with each other. They’re a very important nation. We’re the most powerful nation; they’re a very powerful nation. Why would we not be dealing with each other?”“But the Russia hoax is—absolute, dishonest hoax,” Trump continued. “Made it very difficult for our nation and their nation to deal. And we discussed that. I said, ‘You know, it’s a very appropriate time.’  Because things are falling out now and coming in line, showing what a hoax this whole investigation was. It was a total disgrace. And I wouldn’t be surprised if you see a lot of things happen over the next number of weeks. This is just one piece of a very dishonest puzzle.”One of those “things” that are “falling out” is the attempted dismissal of criminal charges against Mike Flynn—Putin’s dinner companion at a gala for the Kremlin propaganda organ RT television in December 2015. Trump’s overtures sounded very good to Kremlin ears. The upending of an investigation into the Russian election interference implies the end of sanctions against the perpetrators, if Trump can work his will on Congress. While the tidbits revealed by the American president were notably absent from the White House and Kremlin readouts, which also omitted any mention at all of the said commentary about Russia’s election interference, the Kremlin did note the “satisfaction” of both presidents at the conclusion of the phone call. Exchanges between the two leaders have become, in fact, unusually frequent in 2020, and Russian analysts have taken notice. Indeed, they have offered up some extremely ambitious predictions, anticipating that the standoff between the United States and Russia eventually will play out bigly in the Kremlin’s favor.
Vitaly Mankevich, international-relations expert and the president of the Russian-Asian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, told Komsomolskaya Pravda—one of the most popular newspapers in Russia—that “the United States will abandon excessive pressure on Russia, since it does not pose an existential and ideological threat to Trump’s America (unlike the USSR during the Cold War). The White House will probably even try to pull Russia over to the U.S. side, offering investments and lifting sanctions.” Mankevich further predicted “a decrease in American activity in the Baltic states, Eastern Europe, the Balkans, and the Middle East.”Perhaps the tastiest bargain of all would be the anticipated handover of Ukraine to the Kremlin, in exchange for Russia’s support of the United States in its brewing conflict with China. Komsomolskaya Pravda concluded: “The United States may give Ukraine to Russia in an exchange for an alliance against China.” While Ukraine obviously is not Trump’s to give, the country is heavily dependent on the U.S. assistance for its very survival. Information revealed during the impeachment proceedings laid bare President Trump’s callous disregard toward Kyiv, combined with his overt longing to cozy up to the Kremlin.  On a larger scale, Vitaly Mankevich predicted the disintegration of NATO and the opportunity for Russia to re-establish a  hold over Eastern Europe unseen since the times of the Soviet Union. Of course, Mankevich emphasized, “this scenario is relevant only if Donald Trump is re-elected for a second term in November of 2020.”The ongoing motivation for Russia’s continued election interference explains why the English-speaking Kremlin-controlled networks have latched on to reports that aim to discredit former Vice President Joe Biden, while also presenting the U.S. democracy as “a sham,” with no one worth voting for. Destroying faith in the U.S. electoral process is one of the most important goals of the Kremlin’s anti-American propaganda. Another aim is to exacerbate the divisions in American society, but Trump is aptly accomplishing that—with or without Russia’s help. Trump’s re-election would provide a bouquet of benefits for the Kremlin and Biden’s considerably higher poll numbers are discussed with concern in the Russian state media. While the English-speaking bullhorns of the Kremlin have zeroed in on Tara Reade’s allegations against the highest-polling presidential candidate, the Russian state media back home quietly acknowledged that the timing of Reade’s disclosures clearly indicates an effort to undermine the candidacy of Biden. During his eponymous evening news show, host Vladimir Soloviev dismissively described Reade’s disclosures as a typical pre-election ploy, designed to erode Biden’s support (crude even by Kremlin standards). But that has not deterred the English-language state media from pushing the Reade accusations in hopes they’ll successfully torpedo Biden’s chances. The main incentive for the Kremlin’s ongoing support of the Trump presidency was eloquently summed up by Karen Shakhnazarov, CEO of Mosfilm Studio and a favored pundit on Russian state television: “Trump is a weak leader—and that is great for Russia. It’s also good for China.” Describing Trump as a synthesis of Mikhail Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin—Russian leaders of the past associated with the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the weakening of Russia— Shakhnazarov expressed his hope that Trump would bring about the destruction of the United States of America, akin to what happened to the USSR.But let’s return to the matter of ventilators that segued into Trump’s musings about his phone call with Putin.“I suggested if they need—because we have a lot of ventilators—if they need ventilators, we’d love to send them some, and we will do that at the appropriate time. We’ll send them some ventilators.”Question: “Did he take you up on it? Did he say—”Trump:  “Yeah. We’ll be doing that.”On this matter, the Kremlin’s commentators were far from enthusiastic. The absurdity of buying ventilators from Russia in April, only to offer U.S. ventilators to Russia in May, laid bare the propagandistic nature of such exchanges. And there’s this: Faulty Russian ventilators of the same make and model have caused fires and killed coronavirus patients in at least two Russian hospitals to date. It is unclear whether the potentially faulty Russian ventilators are currently being utilized in American hospitals, or sitting in storage as dormant metaphors of the Kremlin’s Trojan gifts.

You’ll find Julia Salazar’s campaign headquarters in a quiet corner of Bushwick, Brooklyn, down the street from a salvage yard. It’s located within a former coffee shop that, in a more distant incarnation, served as a funeral parlor. In one of the storefront’s Gothic windows, someone has taped up a recent cover of the New York Times Sunday Review section. “Millennial Socialists Are Coming,” reads the headline, while beneath it a metal placard nailed to the building’s facade cautions visitors striding through the parlor’s entryway to “Watch Your Step.”
Whoever placed those two pieces of signage in such close proximity to one another, aside from having an eye for collage, also has a clear grasp of the political moment Salazar’s candidacy for the state Senate exemplifies. Salazar is one of those millennial socialists, and her opponent in the Sept. 13 primary for District 18’s North Brooklyn Senate seat, Martin Malavé Dilan, is among a number of establishment Democrats now in surprising danger of losing their positions. The old stalwarts of transactional politics, political machines and unions, just aren’t as powerful as they once were. Or at least, as recent events signal, they aren’t much of a match against a candidate with a real ground game who catches the ardor of voters.
‘Our ability to mobilize people is a threat to all corporate politicians.’
Who would’ve thought? Talking to people face-to-face about meaningfully improving their lives pays off. That’s the Democratic Socialists of America’s (DSA’s) strategy, and it appears to be working. In Virginia last November, DSA member Lee Carter defeated the incumbent Republican House of Delegates majority whip, and this May, four DSA members clinched primary victories in legislative races in Pennsylvania. But the group’s most impressive electoral achievement to date came in June, when 28-year-old Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez upset longtime Queens Democratic party boss Joe Crowley in a congressional primary.
DSA activists knocked on doors by the thousand for Ocasio and helped knock down Crowley, who was widely expected to someday succeed Nancy Pelosi as the top House Democrat. The Queens-Bronx district is heavily Democratic, so the win all but ensures Ocasio will have a place in Washington.
“Our ability to mobilize people is a threat to all corporate politicians,” says Abdullah Younus, co-chair of DSA’s 4,000-member New York City chapter. The organization has seen its national membership jump from about 5,000 to 47,000 since Donald Trump’s election in 2016. Millennials, disenchanted with mainline Democrats and feeling a sense of urgency, have swarmed into its ranks — and more so since Ocasio-Cortez’s stunning victory.
“What people are realizing is that this isn’t about specific candidates, but that this is about a movement,” Younus said. “All over the country, as people organize more and more, we’re defeating the power of machines. We’re doing this by placing the needs of the many over the profits of the few. This is only the beginning.”
DSA has thrown itself into the Salazar campaign. Like Ocasio, who is one year her senior, Salazar hails from a working-class background. She was raised by a single mother, with what she terms “conservative bootstrap politics.” Those politics influenced her to register as a Republican when she first signed up to vote in 2008. Her own life experiences soon set her on a different political path, though she wasn’t a registered Democrat until last year.
Tumblr media
Salazar has been working since age 14, getting her first job at a grocery store and cleaning homes to supplement the financial aid she received while attending Columbia University. That’s where she says she found her class consciousness, reading Karl Marx and later attending study groups hosted by the socialist magazine Jacobin. She was already an activist by then, having organized her fellow tenants in a campaign to force their landlord to make repairs and turn on the heat in the winter.
“I went on the city’s website and found out we could legally withhold our rent,” she recalled, sitting on a folding chair in the back of her campaign headquarters. At the time, she wasn’t even aware there was a term for the tactic. “Little did I know that is called a rent strike. Three months later, we ended up going to Housing Court, and we won concessions from the management company. It was really empowering.”

The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. In addition to several provisions for general welfare, the new Act created a social insurance program designed to pay retired workers age 65 or older a continuing income after retirement.

Fdr And Organized Labor
Around the time when Franklin Delano Roosevelt took over the presidential office in 1933, union membership recorded a decrease from over 3 million in 1932 to around 2.7 million a year later. That number constituted around 7 percent of all employed workers at the time when the most likely underestimated unemployment rate reached a quarter of the labor force. Extremely limited job opportunities and a huge number of individuals ready to secure any kind of employment created an environment where workers could be easily abused. Despite some attempts of the Hoover administration to empower organized labor , union membership resulted in limited protection of the workers who were willing and able to pay membership fees. However, the declining trend reversed in 1934, and unions would consistently grow during Roosevelt’s presidency, a phenomenon that reflected first, the protective and regulative labor provisions of the New Deal and later, the massive industrial growth during World War II. By the time Roosevelt died, shortly after he was elected to his fourth term, union membership in the United States reached its high peak. In 1945, over 14 million workers belonged to unions, which constituted over 35 percent of non-agricultural workers and over 27 percent of all employed workers.
Consequences Of The Court
Facing strong political opposition and decreasing popular support, the Judicial Procedures Reform Bill was doomed to fail. While Burton Wheeler, a progressive Democrat from Montana, played the role of the public voice of the alliance that formed in opposition to “the court-packing plan,” conservative Democratic senators Carter Glass, Harry Flood Byrd, and Josiah Bailey, were critical to collecting enough opposing votes in Congress. Roosevelt realized that the bill had no chance of being passed and a compromise that did not alter the existing balance in the court was negotiated. The controversy, which historians consider to be one of the most questionable moments in Roosevelt’s career, strengthened conservative opposition to the New Deal. By 1937, an informal yet strong group of congressmen and representatives opposing the New Deal formed in Congress. Known as the Conservative Coalition , it initiated a conservative alliance that, with modifications, shaped Congress until the 1960s.
Also in 1937, Willis Van Devanter, a justice nominated by Republican Theodore Roosevelt, retired and thus, FDR could nominate his first Supreme Court justice. By the end of his presidency, Roosevelt nominated eight Supreme Court justices—more than any other president.
The New Deal Comes To A Screeching Halt In 1938

This article is the fourth in a series on midterm elections in America.
When Republicans and Democrats faced off for the 1938 midterm elections, it had been a decade since Republicans had done well in congressional elections. They had lost seats in both houses of Congress in 1930, 1932, 1934, and 1936, bringing their totals to a mere 88 in the House and 16 in the Senate. In the wake of Franklin Roosevelt’s landslide reelection victory in 1936, it was an open question whether the Republican Party was capable of serving as a viable opposition party.
As FDR began his second term, his program was hardly complete. He aimed for a “Third New Deal” of further government economic controls and redistributionism, and seemed to have the votes in Congress to push it through.
Then, a series of events damaged Roosevelt’s standing and rejuvenated the GOP’s chances.
First, overestimating his popularity and persuasive powers, Roosevelt embarked on his “court packing” scheme, bringing a backlash even among many Democrats in Congress. The attempt seemed to verify Republican charges that the President was engaged in a campaign for one-man rule.
During 1937-38, America was also rocked with a series of sit-down strikes and instances of union violence, mostly instigated by the Congress of Industrial Organizations . Many Americans associated the surge in aggressive unionism with Roosevelt’s encouragement of unions in the 1935 National Labor Relations Act.
Franklin D Roosevelt: Domestic Affairs

FDR’s mandate as a first-term President was clear and challenging: rescue the United States from the throes of its worst depression in history. Economic conditions had deteriorated in the four months between FDR’s election and his inauguration. Unemployment grew to over twenty-five percent of the nation’s workforce, with more than twelve million Americans out of work. A new wave of bank failures hit in February 1933. Upon accepting the Democratic nomination, FDR had promised a “New Deal” to help America out of the Depression, though the meaning of that program was far from clear.
In trying to make sense of FDR’s domestic policies, historians and political scientists have referred to a “First New Deal,” which lasted from 1933 to 1935, and a “Second New Deal,” which stretched from 1935 to 1938. These terms, it should be remembered, are the creations of scholars trying to impose order and organization on the Roosevelt administration’s often chaotic, confusing, and contradictory attempts to combat the depression; Roosevelt himself never used them. The idea of a “first “and “second” New Deal is useful insofar as it reflects important shifts in the Roosevelt administration’s approach to the nation’s economic and social woes. But the boundaries between the first and second New Deals should be viewed as porous rather than concrete. In other words, significant continuities existed between the first and second New Deals that should not be overlooked.

End Of The Democratic Coalition
Frustrated and exhausted by the turn of events, Johnson stunned the nation by deciding not to run for reelection in 1968. The assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy in early 1968 also greatly set back Democratic hopes of renewing efforts to press social issues. In fact, the tumultuous events of 1967 and 1968 would spell the end of the long domination of U.S. politics by the Democratic Party that had begun in 1932. For 28 out of 36 years, the Democrats held the White House, and even during the eight years they did not, they still controlled Congress for much of that time.
With the Democratic Party in turmoil and split over the Vietnam War, the Republicans, behind Richard Nixon, swept into office in 1968. The Democrats had chosen Hubert Humphrey from Minnesota, a New Dealer and vice-president under Johnson, as its presidential candidate. The Democratic Coalition, however, could not be revived. Labor had been ignored by the Great Society programs, black Americans were disheartened by the slow pace of integration, youth and liberals were staunchly opposed to the Vietnam War—which many called “Johnson’s War”—and the southerners were dissatisfied with the Democratic liberal social agenda.

The End Of The New Deal
Roosevelt intended to introduce more legislation during his second term , but two main factors made this a much more challenging task than during his first term: the lack of political support and the threat of war. In 1938, Republicans gained seven Senate seats and 81 House seats. In the aftermath of the failure of the 1937 court-packing plan and the 1938 election, the bipartisan Conservative Coalition solidified and strengthened in Congress and many liberal proposals were defeated. A handful of liberal measures did pass when the Conservative Coalition was divided .
The Depression continued with decreasing effect until the United States entered World War II in December 1941. Under the special circumstances of war mobilization, massive war spending doubled the GNP. Civilian unemployment was reduced from 14 percent in 1940 to less than 2 percent by the end of 1943.
Historians and economists disagree whether and, if yes, to what extent the New Deal helped the U.S. economy recover from the Great Depression. However, they all agree that the primary factor of the eventual economic growth that followed the New Deal was driven by the demands of the war effort.
Birth Of A Strong Party
The Democratic-Republican Party successfully promoted the candidacy of Andrew Jackson for president in 1828. Jackson was the first actual populist, or “man of the people,” to represent the party and was called the first westerner since he was from Tennessee which was considered the western frontier at that time. Serving as the party’s leader, Jackson was the national symbol against greed and unfairness. During Jackson’s presidency in the 1830s the party switched its name from Democratic-Republicans to simply Democrats. The Democrats controlled the White House, Congress, and state offices from the mid-1830s to the Civil War. Democrats Van Buren, James K. Polk , Franklin Pierce , and James Buchanan followed Jackson to the White House. Democrats only lost the presidential elections of 1840 and 1848 during that lengthy period.

Midterm Elections Of 1938
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The road was not always smooth in these first years of the Coalition. The midterm election of 1938 showed how the loose-knit coalition of interest groups, though destined to be long lasting, could also be vulnerable. A series of events in 1937 greatly undercut Roosevelt’s popularity. In an effort to gain support for his New Deal reforms, Roosevelt pursued a highly unpopular proposal to add seats to the U.S. Supreme Court in early 1937. That was followed by a major economic downturn, leading to increased unemployment and decreasing farm produce prices. In addition, fighting between two labor unions, the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations , following the CIO’s split from the AFL the previous year, further heightened labor unrest. The New Deal appeared to be in disarray. To make matters even worse, Roosevelt decided to personally campaign against certain conservative Democratic congressmen running for reelection. The president had become weary of conservative Democrats joining with northern Republicans to block NewDeal legislation. Known as the “purge of 1938,” Roosevelt’s political involvement in local elections was very unpopular with the public.
The Democratic Party Organization
Although by the mid-1930s the Democratic Party was a long-standing major political party, it had little structure. It was actually more of a hodgepodge of informally linked small organizations. The national party leadership had become disorganized and weakened from the election failures of the 1920s. By 1936 the main support for Democratic candidates, including Roosevelt, came from masses of unorganized voters—the poor in the cities and countryside, farmers, youth, black Americans, ethnic minorities, labor, and the college educated. As a result, support for the Democratic Party greatly expanded but the party itself changing very little. It was the Roosevelt administration and the various motives of the Democratic Coalition, not the Democratic Party, which led to political changes in the 1930s.
A Mass Political Movement
Prior to the 1930s political involvement had been out of reach to many in the nation. Through their laissez faire policies, Republican administrations during the 1920s had encouraged the growth of large corporations that increasingly controlled the economy and society. These corporations were in turn controlled by a small group of business elites. The social base for the Republican Party was strongly linked to the Anglo-American segment of society and Protestant religious association. Adding to this white, Protestant domination, state laws and cultural traditions in the South hindered most black Americans from voting. Companies used various means, including violence, to limit labor union development and keep power away from lower-class workers, many of whom were recent immigrants. Lower and middle class urban workers and ethnic groups could find no place in the dominant political parties. The economic crisis of the early 1930s and the arrival of the New Deal brought this form of social and political domination to an end.
Judicial Procedures Reform Bill Of 1937
In February 1937, Roosevelt introduced the Judicial Procedures Reform Bill, frequently called the “court-packing plan.” This legislative initiative proposed to add up to six more justices to the U.S. Supreme Court—for each judge over the age of 70 and six months who served more than 10 years, the president would appoint a new judge . The controversial plan did not violate the Constitution as it did not specify the number of Supreme Court justices. However, political opposition to the bill emerged immediately—and not only among anti-New Deal conservatives. Even Roosevelt’s own vice president was critical of the idea. Hardly any politician believed that the president was driven by motives other than being able to appoint pro-New Deal judges who would make the execution of his agenda possible.
Upsurge In World War Ii
Both the AFL and the CIO supported Roosevelt in 1940 and 1944. However, Lewis, a devoted neutralist, opposed Roosevelt on foreign policy grounds and questioned Roosevelt’s decision to run for a third term in 1940. In the end, all unions strongly supported the war effort after June 1941, when Germany invaded the Soviet Union.
While in the two decades following World War II union membership remained high, never again would it grow and be as popular as during Roosevelt’s presidency.

Craft Unionism V Industrial Unionism
The American Federation of Labor , the largest union grouping in the contemporary United States, was growing rapidly after 1933, reaching a membership of 3.4 million in 1936. However, hundreds of thousands of workers chose membership in unions that did not belong to the AFL that was at the time facing severe internal tensions and outside criticism. Traditionally, the AFL organized unions by craft rather than industry; for example, electricians or stationary engineers would form their own skill-oriented unions rather than join a large automobile-making union. This model excluded the so-called unskilled workers, employed most commonly in mass production. Most AFL leaders, including President William Green, were reluctant to shift from the organization’s longstanding tradition of craft unionism and started to clash with other leaders within the organization, such as John L. Lewis, the president of the United Mine Workers of America . The issue came up at the annual AFL conventions in 1934 and 1935, but the majority voted against a shift to industrial unionism .

More About Elections Of 1940 And 1944
As the 1940 Democratic nominating convention approached, President Franklin Roosevelt did not express a strong desire to run for a third term. Secretary of StateCordell Hull appeared to be the front runner for the nomination. But Roosevelt and other party leaders did not feel Hull was sufficiently supportive of New Deal policies. With world war looming, Roosevelt decided to run for an unprecedented third consecutive term and received the party’s nomination. The public was greatly alarmed by Germany’s defeat of France, and a sense of emergency was rising concerning foreign issues. The Republicans nominated Wendell Willkie, a Wall Street lawyer who represented the unpopular utility industry. Willkie actually supported some New Deal accomplishments and took an internationalist position not too different from Roosevelt’s. Given the lack of a dramatic difference between Willkie and Roosevelt on a number of issues, the nation chose to stay with whom they knew best. In addition Roosevelt had boosted defense spending, creating thousands of jobs and turning the economy around once again. Roosevelt defeated Republican Wendell Willkie handily with a 449 to 82 electoral vote tally. Roosevelt drew almost 55 percent of the popular vote and carried every region of the country except the Midwest. The Democratic Coalition held together with southern Democrats and labor joined by ethnic populations. The 1940 election had further solidified the Democratic Coalition.

The 74th United States Congress was a meeting of the legislative branch of the United States federal government, composed of the United States Senate and the United States House of Representatives. It met in Washington, DC from January 3, 1935, to January 3, 1937, during the third and fourth years of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. The apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives was based on the Fifteenth Census of the United States in 1930.
The increased their majorities in both the House and Senate, resulting in a in both chambers, and along with Franklin D. Roosevelt maintained an overall federal government .
Transition To The Fair Deal
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Roosevelt naming Republicans Henry Stimson secretary of war and Frank Knox secretary of the navy, the Republican Party continued to be stymied in making political gains through the war years. A number of New Deal programs persisted beyond World War II . Much of the general public remained largely satisfied into the 1960s with the benefits they were receiving from social security and other programs. Many southern whites remained loyal Democrats. The lower-and working-class Americans in all regions still supported government welfare programs and maintained a strong support for Democratic Party candidates following World War II.
In addition, a wave of labor strikes in the auto and steel industries increased public sentiment against unions. In response, a conservative Congress passed a series of antilabor bills, including the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947. That act, passed over Truman’s veto, prohibited some forms of union activity and expanded the rights of management.
Truman’s campaign faced another obstacle as well. Henry Wallace, Roosevelt’s former secretary of agriculture in the New Deal and vice-president during the early part of World War II, formed the ultraliberal Progressive Party to run for president. The Progressive Party posed a political threat to Truman by attracting votes of Democratic Coalition members away from the Democratic Party ticket. The Democrats were badly fragmented among Progressives, southerners, and the mainstream party.
More About Black Americans Switch
Even with Roosevelt handily winning the 1932 presidential election, 66 percent of the black vote still went to Hoover. This represented a long-term voting pattern of black Americans since the days of President Abraham Lincoln and the 1870s Reconstruction period. Reconstruction was a federal government program under Republican Party influence formed to create social and economic change in the South. But the increasing interest of President Roosevelt’s wife, Eleanor, and the president’s growing awareness of the importance of the black vote in national politics inspired a major change in blacks’ political allegiance. During this time blacks were becoming more politically organized, and public attitudes toward race were changing outside the South. The 1934 midterm elections had indicated that blacks were beginning to turn away from the Republican Party after 75 years of strong support.
Although Roosevelt did not support civil rights issues because he did not want to lose the southern Democrats’ support, some New Deal programs provided assistance to blacks. Secretary of Interior Harold Ickes directed the hiring of black workers on Public Works Administration projects in proportion to their presence in the local workforce. The PWA also provided some public housing for black tenants, even constructing some racially integrated housing projects. In addition, 31 percent of PWA wages went to black workers in 1936.
Lack Of International Pressure
As the Democratic Coalition first began emerging, the international picture was grim. By the mid-1930s the Great Depression had spread globally. Political turmoil in Europe was increasing as aggressive fascist movements gained strength. In Russia a violent communist government had become wellestablished. Because of the disorder abroad few international pressures were being placed on the United States by other nations that were too preoccupied with their own problems. The time was ripe in the United States for political experimentation. President Roosevelt and the New Dealers knew they had a unique opportunity to try something new while not being distracted by international events.
More About Origins Of The Republican Party
The Republican Party was born in 1853 and 1854, through two organizational meetings held in New Hampshire and Wisconsin, and its first convention in Jackson, Michigan. People forming the party shared a common antislavery viewpoint that other political parties would not embrace. They were especially opposed to the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. The act opened the door to slavery in the two newly established U.S. territories. Success at the polls came quickly for the Republicans as their first presidential nominee, John C. Fremont, carried 11 states in the 1856 presidential elections. The Republicans were almost instantly the key challenger to the Democratic Party in the North. Their next candidate, Abraham Lincoln, won 18 northern states in the 1860 presidential elections, enough to win the election against a Democratic Party that was in turmoil.

The New Dealers Arrive
Roosevelt and the New Dealers came from the urban progressive wing of the party. Progressivism called for using the powers of government to solve social and economic problems. Progressives believedthe government should take a more aggressive role in relieving people’s hardships and overseeing business activities. Roosevelt’s first one hundred days of office, beginning on March 4, 1933, were filled with an incredible amount of social and economic legislation. The legislation that became collectively known as the New Deal included bank reform, regulation of the stock market, farm bills, public works programs, and low-interest loans for homeowners. These new pathways quickly labeled Roosevelt’s administration as the most daring in U.S. history. In their flurry of activity New Dealers sought to make everyone satisfied, and for the first six months they were fairly successful. Even most businessmen, who had historically supported Republican candidates, refrained from criticizing the Democratic president.

Midterm Elections Of 1938
Tumblr media
Upsurge In World War Ii
youtube

Th United States Congress

Tumblr media

AND IF HALF THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU ARE PROFESSORS
And present union leaders are somehow inferior. I don't want to see a path whose immediate effect is to cut an existing source of revenue. The problem is, the USPTO in effect slept with Amazon on the first date. I see starting to get standardized is acquisitions. This may not be by reforming the universities but by going around them. He was a precise sort of guy, so he'd measured their productivity before and after. If they shake your hand on a promise, they'll keep it. They buy a lot of time worrying about patent infringement. Of the remainder, the smart ones would refuse such a job, leaving only a few with the wrong sort of ambition. Instead of garden sheds they must design huge art museums.
Since software patents are no different from hardware patents, people who say software patents are no different from hardware patents, people protected ideas by keeping them secret. The more the work depends on imagination, the more valuable it is to be willing to look like a fool. So if you're not good at anything yet, consider working on something so new that no one else is either. It's all too common for an assistant to result in a net increase in work. They may be surprised how well this works. Something hacked together means something that barely solves the problem, or maybe doesn't solve the problem at all, but another you discovered en route. Ordinary employees find it very hard to recommend an acquisition; it's just what their business has evolved into. Even YC's haters buy it. This rule is left over from a time when they'd hacked something to their advantage—hacked in the sense of beating the system, not breaking into computers. Most writers do.
This has traditionally been a problem in venture funding. We thought Airbnb was a bad idea. The point is to ensure this dilution is borne by the existing shareholders. As you think of more points, you just add them to the end. It has always seemed to me the increasing cheapness of starting a company. That's the main reason we do Y Combinator: to let loose all this energy by making it easy for hackers to start their own startups. Even that threshold is getting lower, as people watch others take the plunge and survive.
Maybe VCs feel they need the power that comes with board membership to ensure their money isn't wasted. There's a third reason big companies should prefer buying to building: that if they built their own, and they have a natural monopoly, like nuclear waste dumps, aircraft carriers, and regime change, you'd find plenty of projects isomorphic to this one—and indeed, plenty that were less successful. Gradually our machines consist more and more of software. But after a second's reflection, the answer seemed obvious. You're at least close enough to work that the smell of it makes you hungry. So as well as readers. So let me tell them something still more frightening: you are now competing directly with Google. Do patents encourage or discourage innovation, and the people running the test really care about its integrity. For some reason this seems to be such a test. For example, in preindustrial societies like medieval Europe, when someone attacked you, you may as well do what he asks, because he is not going away. Are they hypocrites?
If we can decide in 20 minutes, surely the next round, which they'll only take if it's worse for the startup than they could get in the open market. If you want to get the same yield. They may be trying to make a complete catalog of a number of independent things. This will change a lot of them. If you're starting your own company, why do you need a degree? I'm not going to use TCP/IP just because everyone else does. When a company starts misbehaving, smart people won't work there. Even now I think if you asked hackers to free-associate about Amazon, the one to discover its replacement.
Imitating it was like pretending to have gout in order to seem rich. The fact that you can now start a startup after college, which will switch from when one graduates from college to when one leaves it. Most startups that succeed do it by pretending to be overstretched. I never saw the math of why till I got this founder's email. Before patents, people protected ideas by keeping them secret. Despite their name, the super-angel, who operates like an angel, but using other people's money, like a VC. This can only happen in a very limited way in a list of n things so much? But if the worst thing a startup can least afford. What people seem to miss most is the lack of responsibilities. We told him we'd fund him if he could still endure the annoyances of having a job, but it's also hard work and at times very stressful.
I wrote to persuade, if only out of habit or politeness. They don't want founders to get a job depends on the kind you want. Startups need to be able to get the same yield. If having less power prevents investors from overcontrolling startups, it should be better not just for founders but for investors too. In retrospect that seems ridiculous, and we only regret about 10% of our decisions. B, but it won't be the sort of thing. Professors have to publish it, and learn a lot about matters of principle, and they have a fair amount of data to go on. If a city offered these companies a million dollars if they'll relocate to your city, and sent assassins after those who tried. Frankly, it surprises me how small a role in software? In it he said he worried that he was fundamentally soft-hearted and tended to give away too much for free. This is not a direct correlation between the skills you should learn to get a job depends on the kind you want.
Thanks to Emmett Shear, Jacob Heller, Sam Altman, and David Sloo for putting up with me.
