Finishing the Telvarez

Finally getting around to posting the results of the Alvarez Telecaster project.

First off, fixing this ugly hole of an insert jack:

The cup is gone, and there’s some serious washer stacking going on. In fact it looks like somebody found a washer with the right outside diameter to just shove in there. I got all of that junk out of there (and rewired the jack while I was at it), and replaced it with a simple football style plate.

(Not gonna even try messing with those vintage style cups)

That was the first night, the next time I sat down with this guitar, it was time to deal with “the wad.”

That, my friends, is all of the grounds and shields from everywhere in the guitar all twisted together and covered in a lump of solder. I was actually able to melt it get it pulled apart without having to cut anything off.

Now it was time to wire all the controls basically from scratch. A little daunting as a second project, and I had to make it harder on myself by not just going with standard tele wiring. The process actually took me two “sessions”- one just prepping wires and planning, and one doing the actual soldering. I ended up not taking too many pictures of the process. Here’s one wide shot after I got the first few wires on the switch:

It’s ugly but functional. Here’s the breakdown:

That’s a four way switch, so I’ve got a series option in addition to the standard bridge/both/neck. It’s a really wide range of tones. The bridge pickup by itself is nice and bright, but also really full with a surprising amount of bass; the “middle” position has a nice quack and sparkle for funky chords; neck only is a cool wooly sound that goes well on solos, and series mode is a rude, midrange-y rock sound. I also went with output loading (also called 50’s Gibson wiring or the Fezz Parka mod) in lieu of a treble bleed so I can clean up the sound with the volume knob without losing highs.

Now I’m ready to dream up the next project. I think my late 90s Epiphone Les Paul Studio is my next target.
