'You're such a jerk!'
'Yes,' you ran after him in your heels.
********************
'Did you make the call to London?' Sihtric asked, walking fast, adjusting his cufflinks.
'Set an appointment with Alfred?'
'That too.'
'Did you send Aethelwold the memo that he's fired?'
'Yep, all done, boss.'
Sihtric abruptly stopped walking, fixing his tie in the reflection of the glass door of his office, and you almost bumped into him.
'Did you send that woman flowers?' Sihtric asked, his mismatched eyes focused on his own reflection.
'Yes,' you sighed.
'And the s-'
'Yes, and the sorry note.'
'Thanks. You're such a doll,' Sihtric winked, 'what would I do without you?' he smiled and kissed your cheek.
'Oh, I- I don't know,' you chuckled, 'dump your dates without my help perhaps?'
Sihtric laughed and walked away, into his office, and you went back to your desk, across from his office. Sihtric had been your boss for a few years now, and you were madly in love with him ever since he hired you. At first you thought he was into you, but it turned out he was just a flirt... with everyone. He treated you well, always respectful, but you were just his assistant, and nothing more. And you were also his way of telling his one night stands that a serious relationship would not work out. But you knew Sihtric was actually desperate to find someone for life. And if he only knew you were that person for him… but no. He was blind, and a fool. And later that day, when your shift was over, you saw another random lady walk into his office, who was clearly not there for business, and Sihtric closed the blinds just before the elevator doors closed in front of you, and you were heartbroken, once again.
******************
A few weeks later Sihtric skipped over to your desk with a grin.
'Someone's happy,' you smiled.
'Maaaybe,' Sihtric teased, 'hey, did you cut your hair?'
'W-what? Oh, eh, yeah… two weeks ago,' you blushed.
'Looks nice,' Sihtric smiled, 'your boyfriend's a lucky guy, huh?
'What? I don't have a-'
'Hey, can you do something for me?' Sihtric didn't hear you, as he only ever heard himself.
'Eh, s-sure, what is it, boss?'
You'd do anything for him really…
'Can you make a reservation for two, for tonight, at that fancy new restaurant? I might get lucky tonight,' he winked.
… even making reservations for the man of your dreams and some girl who he'd undoubtedly bang in his office later that night.
'Oh,' you smiled weakly, 'y-yeah, sure…'
'Thank you, sweetheart.'
******************
You weren't sure what had gotten into your boss lately, but he seemed to date more frequently than before. And every week you watched a new girl pull him into his office by his tie, just before you went home. And every week you had to send them roses on his behalf, saying it was not them, it was him. Or whatever. And you became sick of it. Because in between his dates and one night stands, he'd always lunch with you, forcing you to listen to his complaints about not finding the right woman.
'I want someone smart, you know?' Sihtric said, stuffing his mouth while he spoke, 'like you, you're smart. I want someone smarter than me.'
'That shouldn't be that hard,' you mumbled.
Sihtric frowned and laughed.
'You're funny, did I ever tell you that?' he smiled, 'and I want that too! Someone who makes me laugh.'
You sighed, picking at your food.
'Someone who never judges me… fully accepts me,' he sighed, 'standard shit, you know what am I saying? Of course you know, you got all that. Your boyfriend's really lucky,' Sihtric smiled and got up.
'I don't have a bo-'
'Anyway,' Sihtric yawned and stretched, 'gotta head back to work. Oh, before I forget, can you do me a favour?'
'I guess…'
'Great, I'll show you upstairs.'
You watched Sihtric walk back inside the building and you followed him soon after. Upstairs, Sihtric came running to you with one of his white work blouses.
'Sooo, the favour,' he leaned in and whispered, 'how do I get lipstick stains out of this?' He showed you the stains, 'I told her not to-'
You suddenly snapped and got up, 'I fucking quit!' you yelled in his face.
You grabbed your handbag and stormed off. And Sihtric was absolutely baffled.
***************
Two months had passed since your abrupt departure, and you heard from some ex colleagues that Sihtric was a whole mess ever since you left.
'He doesn't know what to do.'
'He cleared his whole schedule, he can't think straight anymore.'
'I saw him cry while he was eating hot wings the other day, poor bastard, he still sits at the table you always had lunch at together, staring at the empty seat.'
'I heard he hasn't been on any dates anymore, I bet he's too weak to dump girls without your help.'
'I swear, he was wearing the exact same clothes for three days, and his hair was a mess! I'm convinced he slept in his office.'
'He looks really lonely, I'm telling you, he needs you back... at work.'
But you didn't want to just be his employee. You couldn't go back to that, it was too painful. You were so in love with him, the only way to get over him was to completely forget about him, never seeing him again. And you were thinking of moving cities, starting fresh, and your ex colleagues obviously told Sihtric, as he asked about you every day.
'Will her boyfriend move with her?' Sihtric asked, gloomy.
'What? What boyfriend?' your ex colleague frowned at your ex boss, 'she's been single as long as we've known her here at work.'
'What?!'
****************
Sihtric: hey
Sihtric: it's me
Sihtric: Sihtric, I mean.
Sihtric: It's Sihtric.
Sihtric: your boss
Sihtric: … ex boss
You: I know. I have your number saved...
Sihtric: really?????
You: ……………….. Yes.
You: why are you texting me? It's late….
Sihtric: are you home?
You: what?
Sihtric: are you home right now?
You: why?
Sihtric: because I'm at your door…
'What are you doing here?!' you gasped, seeing Sihtric on your doorstep, and you quickly tied your robe.
He looked rough, but still handsome you thought. His hair was a mess, he looked tired, his white blouse was half unbuttoned and his tie hung around loose around his neck, and he was holding a bouquet of white flowers in one hand and a box of chocolates in his other.
'Hey,' he smiled weakly, 'y-you look beautiful.'
'T-thanks,' you couldn't help but smile, 'you're looking a little… rough.'
'Yeah,' he chuckled, 'sorry.'
'Still handsome,' you said softly.
'Y-you think so?' Sihtric frowned, 'I- I mean… thanks,' he blushed, 'eh, oh, I got you flowers, and some chocolates.'
'Oh, thanks,' you smiled shyly as he handed you his presents, 'd-do you want to come in?'
'I, eh, I'd love to.'
You offered him a drink and you sat down on your couch.
'Why are you here?' you asked again.
'I… heard you're moving?'
'Well, I am considering it… no actual plans made yet.'
'Oh…'
'Yeah…'
'I also heard you don't have a boyfriend.'
'Sihtric,' you sighed, 'I've been single, way before you hired me. I told you multiple times but you just never listened.'
Sihtric stared at you.
'R-really?'
'Yeah, you never listen, Sihtric. Always busy with just yourself or whoever you're seeing that night.'
'I'm sorry… I never realised how much you mean to me, how much you do for me.'
'You had to dump your date one time without my help before you realised how much I did for you? Damn, Sihtric,' you scoffed, 'you're such a jerk!'
'I am!' he said, quickly taking your hand as you tried to walk away, 'you're right, I am a jerk. And I'm… I'm sorry, please,' he begged, 'please hear me out.'
'If you think I will work for you again, you're wrong!'
'Please, just listen.'
You cursed yourself for still being so weak for him.
'Fine,' you sighed and sat back down.
'Listen,' Sihtric said, still holding your hand, 'I… I never realised that… I,' he sighed, 'I never saw that everything I was looking for was right in front of me all these years. And I'm so sorry. I really am the biggest idiot, and I don't even deserve you. You are way too good for me, but I… I'd really like it if you'd go on a date with me.'
'You're asking me out?' you frowned.
'I am most definitely asking you out.'
'And you expect me to make the reservations?'
'Actually,' Sihtric chuckled, 'I managed to do that on my own.'
'Really?'
'Yes,' he smiled, 'at that fancy new place, tomorrow.'
You sighed and shook your head.
'Sihtric, I understand what you're doing, but I don't want to go on a date with you to a place where you've taken every other girl. It's… it's gross. I don't care about that fancy stuff, or your fancy suits or those dumb watches you always wear. If I go on a date with you, I want to see who you really are. I don't want to see just another version of my boss. Ex boss, I mean.'
'Okay, I hear you. What do you have in mind?'
'Take me to a place you never took anyone else,' you shrugged, 'I don't want to be just another repeat of a previous date.'
'Okay,' Sihtric smiled, 'I'll figure out a new place, we could still go now?'
He told you to get dressed in whatever you felt like and he walked you to his car. You drove around for almost half an hour until he suddenly stopped the car.
'Eh… It doesn't look like there's any restaurants here?' you smiled confused, 'where are you taking me?'
'You said you wanted me to take you to a place I never took any other girl,' Sihtric said, taking your hand in his, 'and that's what I'm doing.'
'I…,' you looked around, 'I- I don't understand.'
Sihtric chuckled softly, 'I'm taking you to my house, sweetheart.'

PETRICHOR | sihtric x oc | part two
part one
2. 3 years later
“I love her! I swear, I love her!” Sihtric was indignant, traipsing behind Uhtred and Finan in the night.
“We know, Sihtric- for Christ’s sake, we knew before you did. Just marry the girl already!” Finan teased him.
“Sihtric, she’s Gisela’s sister, and a warrior,” Uhtred interrupted, “The only reason she is not with us tonight is because she wanted to hunt that stag of hers! If you love her, do not change her.”
Sihtric pushed himself forward, rushing to walk beside Uhtred now: “But that’s just it- I won’t. What I’m asking of you is a promise that if I make Lena my wife, then she can still be with us, fighting with us. Nothing has to change. I simply wish to marry her, to fight alongside her as her husband.”
Uhtred simply shook his head, “And I wish you to kill Danes and survive the night. We’re the only chance the villagers have. I will talk with Gisela when we return to Coccham.”
Satisfied with Uhtred’s answer, and childishly giddy at the idea of marrying Ghylena, Sihtric wore a smile on his face for the rest of the night.
<>
Sihtric was starting to worry.
Ghylena had never been gone for so long on a hunt; 2 days or 3, maybe- but 4? It was unsettling to say the least.
Finan was beside him, sharpening Uhtred’s sword with a frown whilst Sihtric worked on Lena’s.
“Tomorrow, Sihtric. If she’s not back by tonight, we leave tomorrow morning to find her.”
Clenching his jaw, Sihtric only nodded.
What if something had happened to her? Raiders, or an accident? What if she had fallen from Shaeda and been inj-
“OPEN THE GATES!”
Sihtric jumped up, hope sparking in him as he ran towards the gates, Finan following close behind.
He had never been more relieved to see Ghylena’s mighty mount, Shaeda.
The woman herself was a sight to behold, walking alongside her horse as she guided him by the reins. Her bow was strung tight across her back, a deadly axe tucked in her belt, and her face and furs covered in a spray of blood.
Atop Shaeda was yet another anomaly- the strange sight of a huge wild boar secured tight with rope to the saddle, and with yet more wrappings from the saddle secured to the stag Shaeda was dragging behind him.
“Ghylena!” Sihtric shouted, gleefully sprinting to her, “Lena, what on earth took you so long!?”
She turned to him, clearly so exhausted that she had not heard his approach, only to be wrapped up in his arms and spun straight up off the ground. Laughing, she drew her arms around his neck, drawing her fingers through his hair when they pulled apart- his arms still around her waist holding her upright.
Shaeda, and the boar and stag were taken away, to be stabled and butchered respectively.
“Did I have you worried, my love?” Lena teased with an arched eyebrow.
“Near killed the little runt with the stress, huntress.” Finan smiled, rubbing Ghylena on the shoulder before pulling her into a hug as well.
“I take it you were totally fine then, Finan,” she patted his back.
“Only too happy to be rid of you.”
Ghylena smacked his chest, then let them guide her to the burh to be fed and washed.
Sihtric’s arm never left her shoulders.
“You missed the King’s visit, you know?” Finan spoke, the sun blinding his eyes.
“Oh? Is that all?”
Sihtric shook his head in mirth, “No, the Lord Aethelwold was also here.”
Disgust marred Lena’s face at the thought of the man she disliked, “Well I’ll thank the gods for sparing me his presence. What did he want?”
“He spoke of a dead man rising, and prophecies of kings.” Finan said.
“So the usual nonsense.” Sihtric kissed her temple, “Yes, Lena, the usual nonsense. Erik also came, smuggled himself through the river on a trading boat. Apparently he was also visiting the dead man.”
Ghylena frowned, “Still, nonsense. Unless I see it for myself, I won’t trust the word of a man who’s only desire is power.”
Finan shrugged, “If Uhtred listens to Aethelwold, we may just see it ourselves.”
<>
“The stag took me 2 days to track, elusive little bastard. I was on my way home by the 3rd day when that smelly hog attacked me in my camp. Managed to stab its guts before Shaeda kicked it in the head, thank god- the beast seemed intent on skewering me with its tusks.” Ghylena was clean now, enjoying her usual nightly drink with Gisela and her family.
“And the wolf?” Gisela inquired, taking Young Uhtred by the hand to be put to bed, “Did you see it again?”
Lena shook her head, “No, but I travelled east, and I think that particular creature lives west of here.”
Uhtred, who held baby Stiorra in his arms, spoke softly, “Perhaps it is a sign from the gods, proof you are on the right path now. You have come a long way since Cumbraland, sister.”
The thought was sweet, and too tired to fight against it, she simply allowed herself to enjoy the sentiment, a small smile gracing her lips, “Perhaps, yes. Whatever the wolf means, I need sleep. Goodnight sweet Stiorra, don’t keep your father up too late.”
“Stiorra makes no promises.” Uhtred watched Ghylena leave for her bed.
After Young Uhtred was in bed, fast asleep with his baby sister in her slumber opposite him, Gisela and Uhtred sat in their bed together, holding each other close as they spoke.
“Has he asked yet?” Gisela looked up at her husband.
Uhtred smirked, “He has. Even asked for my promise that she could keep fighting for me after the wedding, said he didn’t want to change her in order to love her.”
“He knows her well then, it’s good that he respects her, no?”
“Ghylena could find no better man to marry, Gisela.”
“Then why the hesitation?” She pushed herself onto her elbows now.
Uhtred caressed his wife’s hair, brown like her sister’s, their features so alike and yet their spirits so different, “What if I do? What if they marry and she keeps fighting, what if she pups and something happens to the babe because I allowed her to fight, all for a promise I made to Sihtric?"
“Uhtred, you cannot allow your fear of what may happen to stop what should happen. With or without your blessing, I don’t think there’s anything in this life that could stop Sihtric from loving my sister, and Lena will follow her heart no matter what. If the time comes where she is with child, then it will be dealt with in that moment.”
“Perhaps you should be lord of this estate, my love, you seem far better than me at preparing for the future.” Gisela smiled, tucking herself back to his chest, “You simply need to learn to not stand in the way of the heart. And don’t torture the poor boy, tell him soon that he may marry her.”
“Alright, I will.” Uhtred laughed.
-> up next: '2 weddings and a proposal'...

14. Save Aethelwold or Aethelred
Oof... save Aethelwold, but only so Uhtred or Brida can kill him. I would stand there and watch Aethelred die while eating an apple if I could.
21. Break Finan's heart or break your loyalty to Sigtryggr
FRIEND, THIS WAS CRUEL. Goddddd, um... FUCK, this is so hard. Cause the thought of breaking Finan's heart breaks MY heart. Like, I'm just picturing the face he made and the way he stared at Eadith when she said everyone who cared for her is gone, and I can't do that to him. But THEN I think of Siggy's face when his brother betrayed him and that hurts toooooo 😭 FUCKKK. Um, ummm... Betray Sigtryggr's loyalty, but If try to get back into his good graces afterwards 😭😭😭
22. Save Eric or save Ragnar
My heart says Ragnar due to my love for Uhtred and Brida, but I would have LOVED for Eric to live and see what becomes of the plot. Also, I love the idea of someone honorable owing Uhtred a debt, because unlike a lot of the Saxons (aka Alfred and his line), I feel like Eric has always respected and honored his word when it comes to Uhtred, and I think he would have been a fantastic ally. Also imagine Eric being able to raise his daughter as a Dane. Imagine him not being satisfied until he sees Aethelred dead for abusing Aethelflead. Imagine Eric and Aethelflead on the battlefield together, fighting alongside the Coccham Squad! Eric being fond of Sihtric from his time as a spy in Eric and Sigefrid's camp, GAWD!
So in short, Eric.
@songtoyou What about you? Same questions, what are your thoughts?

interactions i wish either we got to see more of, or ones that i think would have simply been interesting to have seen:
- sigtryggr and ragnar: purely because they are both some of my favs, and i think they would have been an awesome duo. - hild and eadith: two best female characters on the show, who would have had a beautiful friendship. - eadith and osferth: same as above. the little glimpse of them in 4x06 was cute. and i wanted to see their friendship progress. i for sure could’ve seen osferth go to eadith for advice and them having long chats about anything. they would have been a good support system for each other. - aethelstan and finan: i wanted to see how their relationship progressed from aethelstan when he was young to now with finan. it was more focused on his son-like bond with uhtred. but i feel like him and finan also would’ve had a good bond. - sigtryggr and eadith: especially because he ordered for her brother to die. it would’ve been interesting to see what their dynamic would have been like. - stiorra and wolland: clearly there was a genuine level of respect and trust between them, and i would of loved to see how that started and see wolland be there for stiorra after sigtryggr’s death. they killed him far too early. - rognvaldr and sigtryggr: a brotherly bond that we only got to starch the surface of. - erik and aethelflaed: apart of me wanted them to run off together and for aethelflaed to be a dane queen. i reckon that would have been far interesting. and they were hella cute together. - wihtgar, rognvaldr and aethelwold: i’m not sure why, but thinking about these three meeting/intreacting/causing chaos makes me laugh so hard. - alfred and sigtryggr: two people who were quite alike in terms of strategic mindset. now that would have been a far interesting battle to watch. i reckon they would of respected each other just like alfred did with uhtred.

I’m curious and would like your own theory. What would happen if Aethelwold did become King?
ok this is sort of funny, because I actually included this exact scenario as part of the s1 iseult lives au I wrote not that long ago so uh...you can check that out, I guess? but here's the thing: in order to really game this out (as opposed to just saying, like, 'oh he'd probably suck at it'), you have to first ask under what set of circumstances would aethelwold become king? did aethelred designate him as his heir instead of alfred? did he kill alfred (or edward)? because those possibilities would lead you in very different directions, you see?
but setting all that aside to just focus on aethelwold's personal qualities: I think the key to understanding his character is that aethelwold does not really believe in anything except that he should be king. he does not want the actual job or responsibilities associated with being king, but he wants the respect and he wants nobody pushing him around; he wants to be king because he's got nothing better to do. he doesn't have a big ideological project like alfred. he's not out to convert the heathens. he's got feelings of shame around not living up to his father's expectations like edward does, but he doesn't have edward's twitchy rage that motivates him to do shit like take over mercia and eoferwic. he wants to be king just because.
in short, what aethelwold would do as king is pretty much what he does the rest of the time when he's not king--being a rich kid with no particular purpose or prospects, party rocking his way to the throne.

TLK Season 1 - It’s Good
Tumblr media
(Spoilers ahead!)
My mum introduced me to The Last Kingdom in 2021. I was late to the club, but I fell in love quickly. Season 1 was an awesome introduction to my now favourite series out there. Let me explain why.
The first two episodes of this season had me hooked. It was a questionable choice to rush through Uhtred’s childhood with the Danes (which was a rather large section in the first book of the TLK series). I still fell in love with the family though. I can’t picture anyone else as Uhtred, nor Brida. Emily Cox and Alexander Dreymon have undeniably chemistry, although I definitely would say they make better friends than lovers.
Alfred is probably one of the things that I was most pleasantly surprised by. David Dawson is... incredible. He brings such a quiet intensity to the character. I will have more to say about him when I talk about later seasons. Only good things.
The story of season 1 flows well. It is well paced, mostly. It’s bingeworthy, yet every episode can be enjoyed as a single one. Travels to Cornwalum and Cynuit felt more like side quests than actual plot drivers. Perhaps that’s just me.
There are some characters which feel unnecessary (*cough* Wulfhere *cough*), some which I think deserve more screen time. Aethelwold is a slimy piece of shit but his character is so well done. It’s made clear he’s not meant to be liked, and it works. I don’t like his character, but I do enjoy his character.
I don’t want to say this is a huge downfall of the season, because it is truly fantastic. However, I feel like Iseult’s storyline was kind of rushed. Of course, they have to have limitations on screen compared to the pages of a book. I just didn’t connect that well with her character.
I hate to say it but I didn’t really like Hild either. In later seasons, I grow to like her, but in season 1 she is just kind of useless? Save for the scene where she comforts Lady Aelswith, she just kind of is there without doing anything of value.
Leofric, however... Man did his death hit me hard. Leofric was a character that is a great right hand man to Uhtred, while also being a warrior in his own right. He doesn’t blindly follow him, and doesn’t treat him with immediate respect. Uhtred is not his lord he is his friend. We don’t learn much about him, yet he is so likeable. I loved him, and it was a shame to see him go.
What a good opener this season is to the series. As a huge history nerd, I find it difficult to watch a lot of historic dramas (for a lot of reasons), but TLK is one of the few that I an enjoy unconditionally.

Hello. The same anon who sent that about Uhtred here.. So here’s my opinion about Ragnar.. I always saw Finan and Sihtric as more of a brothers to Uhtred than Ragnar. Sure Ragnar was basically his “biological” brother since he’s been there from the start but idk, i feel like Uhtred had way more chemistry with Finan and Sihtric, especially Finan. They are the true meaning of brothers to me. They always respected his decisions and followed him no matter what, whereas Ragnar started making a plan on how to attack Winchester the second that Uhtred arrived at Dunholm.. He could’ve been more understanding about Uhtred’s position. He was sworn to Alfred and even tho they were on bad terms at that time Uhtred still made some friends in Winchester so Ragnar really didn’t even think how Uhtred might feel and he didn’t even care. So when Uhtred told Ragnar that he was going to Aethelflaed i basically cheered because once again he acted from his heart and he listened to Finan and Sihtric who expressed that they didn’t want to attack Winchester so i was very happy that he respected their decisions and didn’t turn his back on them.
hello! this is gonna be a long reply 🙃:
i feel like comparing finan and sihtric bromance’s with ragnar's is like comparing apples and oranges. uhtred’s relationship with all three comes from different experiences, different emotions. i feel, from the start uhtred and ragnar’s relationship was always meant to be rocky. nonetheless, underneath the turmoil there was always love. I think uhtred knew that he wasn't always going to follow or be with ragnar, their journeys were always going to be different. and while sihtric is also a dane and holds dane morals and benefits, i feel like since he didn't grow up with a strong dane bond with his family (like ragnar) - i mean sihtric’s father was kjartan...yikes, he formed a surrogate family consisting of both danes and saxons. which is what finan did, and it's what uhtred did. i do  think ragnar respected uhtred’s decisions, but in his mind, most of them were always in favour towards saxons. and for a man like ragnar who has always been loyal to uhtred and tried to help him whenever he could, i think all ragnar wanted was the same from uhtred. which uhtred did give, but in the end, he always turned around to follow his heart which just happened to lean more towards saxons.
the way I saw it when uhtred declared he was now a dane to ragnar, that was like an oath. and when you make an oath as a dane, it's supposed to be unbreakable. it's natural that ragnar was acting more on emotion then understanding. he probably felt hurt, betrayed even. here, uhtred no less then an episode ago, vowed he was once more a dane. willing to fight alongside ragnar. i don't think ragnar thought that uhtred would turn around and break that vow so quickly. and, let's not forget, that wasn't the first time uhtred choose alfred/a saxon over ragnar. so I understand why ragnar lashed out. while i don't agree with him saying that uhtred was no longer his brother, his reaction was understandable given how ragnar was raised and his strong dane morals. i also feel like one of the only things ragnar wanted was for uhtred to come home. after they lost their family, they really only had each other (plus brida). so for uhtred to keep choosing the saxons over ragnar would be hurtful.
as for the plan, from memory wasn't it aethelwold who planted the idea to attack winchester?. I don't think ragnar would've made plans to attack if it wasn't for aethelwold, haesten and bloodhair all encouraging him to do so.
look, at the end of the day i think both brotherly relationships helped shaped uhtred, and both are equally important. and while I do adore uhtred and finan’s bromance a lot more from the three, i still loved the moments (when they weren't on opposing sides) with ragnar.
i feel like at some parts i went a little off topic, ahaha. but clearly, i had a lot of thoughts. 😅

4, 7, 11, 22 for the salty asks :)
🥰 TY hun, you’re making me reveal all my secrets now haha
4. It’s gotta be Alfred x Uhtred, I legit can’t deal with it, I respect Alfred as a character and he’s a good king but on a personal level the way he treats/belittles Uhtred presses alllll my buttons. We get it man, you’re Christian™ and you’re conflicted because the man who can help you achieve your dream of uniting england is pagan so your compromise is to do everything in your power to control and manipulate him? Maybe I relate too much to having christianity weaponised against me but man oh man I cannot see that relationship as romantic in the slightest, no disrespect to those who do, live and let live but it’s not for me sorry
7. This is gonna divert a bit to the books cause there’s nothing I really really can’t stand that I used to like that’s coming to mind from the show, any characters I disliked I’ve pretty much had the opinion all the way through. BUT from the books I don’t like Edward anymore, where we’re at in the show you can see he’s still muddling through/trying to get out from his fathers shadow but jeez the ABSOLUTE MESS he left behind in Sword of Kings, I went from liking him at first to kinda eh I don’t dislike him he’s doing his thing to OMG YOU FUCKING IDIOT I STG real quick hahaha I was so annoyed and I know I’m being vague cause no spoilers but I just needed to yell about it a hot sec, it colours my view of the show a bit so I have to reel myself in sometimes 😅
11. So it’s not all of fandom but there is a section of fandom that I know doesn’t like Uhtred and I’m?? He’s my boy??? I’ve loved him half my life so its hard to articulate why, I just do but 2 things come to mind. 1) I love calling him a toasted marshmallow - a lil crispy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside & 2) The quote: “I sat with my anger long enough until she told me her real name was grief”
Pretty much sums it up for me and yeah he can be brutal and angry just as much as he is kind and protective but for me? When I first found the books as a teenager I needed that anger as much as I needed to know you could still be kind in spite of it, it felt like putting on armour against a world that was nothing but cruelty and loss and Uhtred has known a hell of a lot of both
OK emotional hours over lol
22. I’m sorry because I know you like him lol but Aethelwold, he has some stellar lines but I don’t know what it is about his face or the way he plays the character it just immediately activates my slimy straight man fight or flight instinct, he creeps me tf out 😅

Tlk & alfred for the ask meme👀😁
aaaaa sorry i took so long to answer this lmaoo!!! i forgot it was in my inbox but i LOOOOOOOVE YOU!!!! @stellar-voyager you give me all the fun validation
001 | THE LAST KINGDOM
favorite character: Literally everyone who’s ever met me knows this lol but Alfred hands down. He’s brilliant. I love the brainy ones who play puppeteer with everyone else, it just really turns the cogs in my mind. I also love Uhtred and Aldhelm though, they’re probably tied for next in line :)
least favorite character: Cn*t 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 I can’t stand him. But Aethelwold comes in a close second because ew.
5 favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Again, literally everyone who’s ever met me knows this but Uhtred and Alfred have so much chemistry and such a strong bond that I couldn’t just...not ship them. After that there are some really good canon ships in this show that I just love. Aethelflaed x Aldhelm, Uhtred x Gisela, Finan x Eadith, and Alfred x Aelswith have all my heart eyes 🥺
character I find most attractive: Ugh I can’t believe I have to answer this when the main cast is full of attractive people. If I’m being completely honest I really think Uhtred and Gisela are super attractive.
character I would marry: A̶e̶t̶h̶e̶l̶r̶e̶d̶   I can hardly choose between the entire cast, but if I have to narrow it to one then probably Aldhelm :’) He would be the best husband!!!
character I would be best friends with: Likely Uhtred or Aldhelm again <3
a random thought: Iseult lives rent-free in my brain forever, I know she lasted for like 2 episodes but she had such an impact on Alfred that he attended her pagan funeral and I will just never stop thinking about that.
an unpopular opinion: Finan is overrated. That is all
my canon otp: I mean there aren’t a lot of ships that are canon as of yet so Uhtred x Gisela. I love them, they’re the perfect example of what a marriage should be <3
my non-canon otp: I am once again Thinking about Alfred x Uhtred because they are transcendent
most badass character: Alfred. He wasn’t the protagonist but still stole the spotlight every time he was on screen and was unafraid to call people out on their BS.
most epic villain: I hate just about every antagonist in this show and most of them are kind of lame tbh, but Siegfried (i think that’s how you spell it? the subtitles call him Sigefrid but it didn’t look right) was pretty good. I didn’t like him much but he was probably the least lame.
pairing I am not a fan of: Brida and Cn*t are just...ew. Ugh. No.
character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): I mean the writers did a great job with everyone really but... Brida by the end of s4? I am Not a fan.
favourite friendship: It’s impossible for me to give any answer but Coccham Squad, though Hild and Uhtred are the most wholesome friendship I’ve ever seen between a man and a woman on screen. I love the respect he has for her 💖💖 and she for him!!! Really anyone who’s friends with Uhtred, I love.
character I most identify with: I identify a lot with Aldhelm and, a fact which disgusts me :), Edward. Not that I live in my parents’ shadow but at such a young age he’s striving to do more than he’s capable of and that’s a same. I still hate him though 🥴
character I wish I could be: Aethelflaed is the Woman™️
Tumblr media
003 | KING ALFRED (THE GREAT) OF WESSEX
how I feel about this character: HE IS EVERYTHING TO ME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA I would sell my soul to him for a penny and a lock of his soft hair 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: Have I not said Uhtred twice already? I will say it a third time. He deserves it. I also love his relationship with Aelswith. They had a rocky start but there were some scenes in the later seasons that really showed how much they loved and cared for each other 🥺❤️
my favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: He doesn’t really interact with any of the characters except for Uhtred and his family, so I’d have to say Aethelflaed. He’s such an adorable dad with her, I love seeing how much he dotes on her and he was so stricken with grief when she was kidnapped in s2 😭 But for characters who aren’t his family, I’d have to say Hild. She’s easily his favorite nun 🏆😇
my unpopular opinion about this character: A lot of people don’t like him because of his treatment of Uhtred throughout the course of the show which is valid, since he shows a lot of hypocritical behavior and manipulates Uhtred into serving him a lot. But people don’t take into account the fact that Uhtred refused to assimilate with his culture and follow his laws in his own land, instead doing the exact opposite by killing who he pleased and blatantly disrespecting the Christian God. People normally ignore this by saying it was a different time but it’s Alfred’s house and his rules and that is the tea sis.
one thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: The reconciliation with Uhtred and the handhold was really all I could wish for 🥺🥺 and Uhtred’s speech about him!!! The love!!! I’ll always hold their bond so dearly to my heart. But I really wish that we’d gotten to see some grandpa Alfred before he died :((( Grandma Aelswith and Aethelstan were so cute, and the scene where she tells Aethelstan about Alfred’s vision made my heart hurt so much. I wish we’d gotten to see Alfred be a grandpa though 💔 He would have been the best grandfather 😤😤
favorite friendship for this character: haha the implication that alfred has friends is so funny....but no his closest friend is his chronicle (it’s really his diary). To answer this question seriously though, Aelswith may be his wife but she’s also his best friend!! They judge people together just as best friends should. I love them <3
my crossover ship: I’m not really a crossover person so I don’t really have one. Also he’s a real person so that’s just kinda... idk nahhh lol. I guess, off the top of my head, Allura from Voltron???? They’re both...royals...and they’re relatively similar in personality. I don’t even know I’m just throwing stuff into the void 😜 but oh no i’m kind of seeing it now oop- 😖

More thoughts about The Last Kingdom - I noticed that during the scene of the feast in town after Aethelflaed's wedding, when Uhtred and Aethelwold are outside discussing who should really be king of Wessex and the visions of the dead man, Sihtric's just in the background enjoying a blatant make-out sesh with Eahlswith! HaHa! And I simultaneously really respect and can't stand Alfred. He's a bit of a manipulative weasel, but it kind of makes him a good king? I don't know how to feel about him!
I know, I love his blatant make-out sesh haha, it’s adorable that he just doesn’t give a shit. Fun fact from the books because this is one way it differs from the series. It talks about how Uhtred needs to give his approval for the marriage since Sihtric is one of his household warriors, and therefore Sihtric’s wife will become part of Uhtred’s household. But some shit goes down (you know, like Aethelflaed getting kidnapped) and Uhtred never gives his permission. Sihtric narrows her anyway, and Uhtred forgives him.And Alfred is tough, I feel the same way. But the shit that pisses me off is the same stuff that makes him such a good king. Plus he’s just so smart, and his motivations always seem good to me. It has to be such a hard role to play, and I love that the actor can give us such a nuanced performance of him that we both want him to succeed and want him to crash and burn at the same time.

The clinking of snooker balls bouncing off each other as they tumbled into netted pockets sounded throughout the closed pub over the noise of Runa’s heels tapping off the wooden floors, a cloudy wisp of smoke trailing behind as she paced back and forth up the length of the bar under dimmer than usual lighting. Her brother and cousin had ordered her to remain under Uhtred’s command even with the potential threat of Erik and Sigefrid looming over her head.
“Here.” Finan stopped Runa in her tracks holding out the black revolver he’d confiscated earlier in the day. She took it from him with a curt nod tucking it into the back of her trousers and side stepped around him returning to her pacing.
“Would you just relax? There’s nothing to worry about right now.” Finan soothed trying to add some calm to the chaos that was clinging to Runa.
“Nothing to worry about? Oh that’s right, I forget, you aren’t the cousin of a man who heads a racketeering firm or the sister of who runs said cousin’s underground fighting ring, why would you see the danger in being named?” She ranted, turning on her heel to stare him down.
“That’s a good point, but you’re safe here.” Finan added, refusing to buckle under the weight of her gaze.
“And what about when I go home? Should I just barricade the doors and sit at the bottom of my stairs with shotgun’s waiting for them to come for me?”
“You can’t keep shooting people, you need to think before you act, Runa.”
“Says the man who just goes around headbutting people.” Sihtric snorted at her comment, she wasn’t wrong in her assessment of Finan.
“At least if I headbutt someone without thinking I haven’t taken a life with a bullet.”
“Oh my gods, you really believe I don’t think first, you thought I was going to shoot Aethelwold tonight.” Runa took a step forward and Finan did the same, unwilling to back down.
“You could have. I’ve been told to be wary about you having a gun, so I am, alright?”
“No! Not alright! I have never just shot somebody because the little voice of anger said to.” Runa threw her arms up, her frustration growing.
“That’s not what we’ve been told.” Finan scoffed at her claim.
“Don’t believe everything my brother tells you.”
“So he’s a liar?”
“No.”
“I’m confused, either he’s a liar or you are.”
“Wanker.” Runa flicked her still burning cigarette butt at Finan and walked away to the restroom at the other end of the pub, he muttered a series of curses under his breath wiping off the ash stain it left behind on his shirt following after her.
“Finan!” Sihtric called out, he didn’t see anything good coming from him following her.
Runa leaned forward onto the white porcelain sink with her hands grasping the squared sides focusing on the uneven grouting between the small black and white tiles decorating the walls. Finan surged in through the door ready to continue their argument but he stopped short as soon as his eyes fell on her, he could see her unsteady breathing and the black ink along her fingers a stark contrast to the white of her knuckle’s from how tight her grip was.
“Runa, I..” Finan spoke softly.
“No.” She shook her head not wanting to see or speak to him.
“Would you just talk to me so I can at least try to help?” He took a small step towards her.
“Fine, you want to talk? I’m stressed, it’s easy for you to just throw your weight around and be heard, respected even, people will back off. Being a woman is hard enough as it is, but being a woman in this world? Finan, do you have any idea what I have to do to keep myself safe? What they would do to me if I can't?” She turned to face him in her ranting, he could never fully understand what it’s like living her life but he did understand that she didn’t have the same advantages as he did when it came to a fight.
“I’m sorry. I know you’re scared an-” He walked even closer into Runa’s space trying to further comfort her.
“I’m not scared.” She insisted but he didn’t believe her.
“Come here.” He tugged on her hand pulling Runa into his chest, she sighed relaxing into his hold and wrapping her arms around his waist.
“Finan?” She kept her head against him listening to the steady beat of his heart as he hummed in acknowledgement “Don’t ever take my gun from me again.”
He pulled back slightly keeping his arms firmly locked around her shoulders, she lifted her head to look at him and his lips parted unconsciously, he saw a vulnerability in Runa he’d never seen before calling out to him like a siren asking him to dive into the unruly waters locked within her eyes.
“Everything alright here?” Sihtric coming through the door pulled Runa’s gaze from Finan and she gently slipped out his hold, nodding.
“Uh yeah, we kissed and made up.” Finan tried his best at a playful tone ignoring the sting Runa breaking free of his hold caused.
“There was no kissing.” She laughed, giving Sihtric an awkward glance as she passed him leaving the restroom.

The next few weeks went by smoothly with collections happening successfully on time, no threats had come from Erik or Sigefrid, and there was a sense of calm within the firm. Runa however felt uneasy, she believed it to be a false sense of security and refused to put any trust in it as the others had. She’d been following Finan’s instructions without argument when out on jobs with him and keeping her distance at all other times.
Runa applied this same rule to Sihtric, polite conversation here and there, an invisible line drawn to avoid drifting too closely into his space, there had been no more calls from him either and she continually beat down the voice telling her to not shut the men out completely. But when Runa had asked this voice what to do when it came to choosing just one no answer came, leaving her feeling more frustrated.
Late one Friday evening as Runa idly drummed her fingers off the cool steering wheel of her car at a red light she found herself squinting from headlights blinding her through the rear view mirror, the car behind had pulled up too closely and she thought nothing of it. When this same car continued to trail too closely behind her on every road she decided to take a detour from her usual route home and the following car turned off left to a different street.
Breathing a sigh of relief she laughed to herself thinking it was stupid to be feeling so paranoid, when she eventually parked up outside her house something in the pit of her stomach told her it felt off. Not one to ignore her gut she leaned over opening the glove compartment retrieving the small black revolver and held it closely, just in case.
Uhtred and Finan had given her a talking to recently and said they would feel more comfortable if she kept it out of the pub for Gisela’s sake, and so to avoid further arguments she had agreed. Opening her car door Runa heard a car pull up a short distance away and listened closely as she locked up and walked through her small gate towards the house, there were no voices, no other house doors opening, in fact she hadn’t even heard the other cars door shut.
Quickly turning on her heel she came face to face with an unknown man who had managed to creep up and was now standing directly behind her. She thrust the revolver up holding it under his chin, her finger steady on the trigger.
“You know who I am?” Runa kept her tone calm, not allowing the adrenaline to take over and looking into the man's eyes, she found this approach to be more unnerving to others than shouting or screaming.
“Y-Yes.” He nervously responded holding his hands up; his eyes flicking down to the gun digging into his skin then back up to her eyes.
“Ready to die?” She smirked, forcing him to take several steps back keeping the weapon firmly in place .
“No.” He answered with a hard swallow letting her guide him back towards the gate.
“Didn’t think so. On you go, fuck off.” Runa jerked her head in the direction of his crudely parked car and watched him run back to it.
She continued watching until he sped off leaving the quiet street behind, Runa rushed into her house slamming the door shut behind her and dead bolting it locked. She threw her handbag down on a small side table and ran up the stairs not turning any lights on and cursing under her breath as she went. Wasting no time she retrieved her black travel bag from the wardrobe and chucked a few clean outfits into it, not bothering to fold any of the items.
Carrying the bag to the bathroom she used the hand still holding her gun to sweep her toothbrush along with other toiletries on top of the clothes and made her way back downstairs to the kitchen. Rummaging through the junk drawer she found the envelope she hunted down containing some money and a spare set of keys for Cnut’s house. Taking a quick peek out of the living window she couldn’t see any unknown cars or people hanging around, deciding to take the risk she picked up her bags and dashed out to her car.
After driving for a while allowing the anger bubbling within her to ease she found a phone box and decided to call Cnut.
“Are you still at home?” Her brothers voice sounded through the tinny public telephone
“I’m not that stupid.”
“Good, find somewhere to stay tonight and we can discuss this with Ragnar in the morning.”
“What? Can’t I just come to you?”
“Sister, my family are here, no.”
“Right.”
“Ru-“ She cut him off slamming the receiver down and got back into her car.
Runa sat in her car of the apartment block she’d only been to once before, her eyes drifted up to the third balcony landing on the flat number she was certain was the correct one. The light was on in the entryway leaking out of the little square glass panels at the top of the grey door. She slipped her heels off and placed them into her open travel bag not wanting her steps to be heard and looked around in every direction as she climbed the cold concrete stairs and walked along the exposed path with a clear view into the courtyard.
With a deep breath she knocked on the door shifting in place, she didn’t know if she’d be welcome, if he lived with anybody, or if he’d have company and turn her away but if he did let her in she knew she’d be safe for the night.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know whe-“ She started to speak when the door opened bathing her in yellow light.
“No apologies needed.” Sihtric reached out taking her bag with no questions asked and stood to the side letting her in.
Following the hallway Runa found the living room and perched on the edge of the sofa putting the revolver now hidden in her trench coat pocket onto the low coffee table as Sihtric walked in holding out a packet of cigarettes.
As she puffed away recounting what had happened she found it hard not to stare at him, given the late hour she was surprised he was even awake let alone dressed. His arms were bare allowing her to admire the well defined muscles as the tight white cotton vest clung to his pecs, he still wore his black trousers but without his belt and he was barefoot.
“There isn’t a dead man in my garden if that’s what you’re thinking.” She laughed rubbing her forehead.
“No, if there was I’m pretty certain you would have started with that.” Sihtric smiled.
“I am sorry for intruding like this.”
“You aren’t intruding Runa, you can stay as long as you need.”
“Thank you.”
“I just need to know if I’m sleeping on the sofa or in the bed.” He wet his lips holding eye contact, the feelings Runa had been beating down for weeks suddenly screaming at her.
“I won’t kick you out of your own bed, Sihtric.”
After a short while he directed Runa to the bedroom only for her to emerge standing in the doorway a few moments later chewing her bottom lip looking annoyed.
“I uh, didn’t pack anything to sleep in.” She sighed, he chuckled, deciding against suggesting she just sleep naked, he scooted past her in the small hallway and dug around in his drawers.
“Will these do?” He handed Runa a grey short sleeved undershirt and white wide legged boxer shorts. She nodded with a coy smile disappearing back into the bedroom to change.
“Not quite Marlon Brando, but still cute.” Sihtric joked walking into the room a few minutes later getting a laugh from Runa. The undershirt hung loosely from her torso, and being shorter than him the boxers came to a stop at the top of her knees.
He heard the covers shift and bed creak as he rid himself of the vest he wore, another creak sounded out as he unzipped his trousers. The energy in the room had changed and he tried not to think about it as he climbed into the bed laying on his back, reminiscent of how he had that night he shared a hotel room with Runa.
Sihtric was unsure as to why she had been keeping her distance, at first he wondered if it was because Runa had decided she was more interested in Finan but he had noticed she was keeping away from the irishman unless it was work related too. He thought if he gave her the space she so clearly wanted that she would reach out to him eventually instead of pushing her away by calling or putting himself into the small group she had attached herself to at the Beacon.
Every so often his eyes would catch hers across the bar; a small smile playing on her lips as she looked away knowing she’d been caught. Other times he was able to watch her freely, only being pulled back into the room by Osferth nudging him to say it was his shot on the snooker table.
The mattress shifted beside him making the bed frame creak again, Runa was restless and unable to find a position that was comfortable and stopped the voice in her head from shouting at her to touch Sihtric.
“You’re uncomfortable?” He laughed lightly into the now dark room.
Runa huffed in response rolling on to her side facing away from Sihtric, his scent was everywhere and she now regretted her choice of turning up here instead of finding a hotel to check into. Noticing that her body was still tense beside him Sihtric turned over folding his arm over her waist and pulled her into his chest, slowly he felt her relax against him and he smiled into her loose waves.
Light trickled in through the thin curtains of Sihtric’s bedroom along with the sounds of different neighbours bumping around in their own apartments signalling morning. Runa attempted to put some space between her and a sleeping Sihtric but his hold tightened; pulling her back into him Runa let out a tiny gasp and bit her lip, he had held her all night with no wandering hands or a certain pop up occurring and she had to remind herself this is just men in the mornings.
Sihtric’s other arm slipping under her body and winding around her made that thought quickly disappear and a familiar tension grew in her deepest depths, all she had to do was say no and she knew he’d let her go, but she didn’t, instead she sank further back into him.
“Please tell me you’re awake.” He spoke lowly, his breath fanning across her ear.
“Very.”
“Tell me to stop an-“
“Shh.” She hushed him softly.
Placing her hand over his she guided him to the edge of the elastic waistband and slipped his hand under it, running a digit through her folds his other hand came up palming at her breast through the thin cotton of his undershirt. He rolled his hips pushing his erection against her covered core slowly matching the torturous slow pace of the pad of his finger circling her clit.
A low grumble emitting from his chest had a soft moan fall from her lips, with a quick shift he flipped her onto her front and positioned himself between her thighs. Runa lifted her hips allowing him to remove the boxer shorts covering her easily, balancing on her forearms her back arched deliciously. Sihtric gave her arse a light slap lining up with her entrance and sinking into her wet walls, a barely audible groan slipping from his mouth.
It’s not long before his hips are snapping against her at a relentless speed punching whines and muffled cries from her with every deep hit. Her knuckles were white from how tightly she gripped the bedsheets trying her best to stay grounded with little luck, red marks and nail indents decorated her hips from Sihtric keeping hold of her.
Slowing his pace his chest heaved smoothing a hand up her spine under the grey cotton, wanting her closer he pushed the shirt over her head ridding her of the garment and wrapped his other arm around to her front pulling her up flush against him. Letting her head fall back against his shoulder he trailed hot open mouthed kisses down her neck, rolling into her over and over again.
The slight flutter of her walls around him signalled she was on the edge just as he was, Sihtric kissed and nipped at her jaw as he guided her hand down between her thighs and controlled her movements over her clit. A choked laugh followed by a string of curses left Runa as her thighs shook with her climax washing over her, Sihtric groaned and bit into the soft flesh of her shoulder with his own release and held her there against him as they came down for their respective highs.
“Is that Runa’s car?” Osferth quizzed with a puzzled look on his face parked in the courtyard of Sihtric’s apartment.
“Hm.” Finan grunted, he knew Runa had an issue last night from the call Uhtred had made to him this morning but this was the last place he expected her to seek shelter.
“Why would she come here and not go to Cnut?” Osferth questioned further, surely her brother would have been the safest option for a place to stay.
“I guess we’ll find out in a minute.” Finan nodded his head towards the stairs Sihtric and Runa now walked down.
“You could of called, let us know you didn’t need the lift.” His voice carried out to the pair through the open window.
“Still need it, Runa can leave her car here.” Sihtric responded.
“Is that a good idea?” Runa was unsure, if she had been followed here without her knowledge last night then her car being here would put Sihtric at risk too.
“They can turn up if they want.” Sihtric shrugged, it had been a while since he got to let off steam in the form of a fight.
“We’re going to Ragnar, Uhtred’s already there.” Finan stated, putting a pair of shades on with his mind racing.
Osferth shifted uncomfortably in his seat multiple times during the drive to The Dunholm, his eyes flickering between Runa and Sihtric through the rear view mirror, he could feel the tense mood of Finan beside him.
“Why weren’t you at your brothers?” Finan inquired, his tone coming out sharper than he intended.
“He didn’t want me there.” Runa claimed, not reacting to his mood.
“So instead of going to a hotel, you went to Sihtric?”
“Why is that a problem?” Sihtric challenged calmly, not looking up from his lap as he rolled a cigarette.
“I’m just confused is all.” Finan defended his questioning.
“You expected me to sit in a hotel surrounded by strangers that could know Erik or Sigefrid?” Runa countered, her fingers silently drumming on her knee.
Finan didn’t respond as he ran his thumb along his bottom lip, he knew she had a point about not going to a hotel, but she could have gone to Rollo, or perhaps even Jackdaw but he didn’t know their living arrangements.
The men let Runa lead the way as they climbed the steps up to the large doors and were let in by a waiting Jackdaw who guided them to the waiting group.
“Is my brother here?” She asked Jackdaw with a side glance.
“He is.”
Runa hummed, slipping off her coat and handing it over to a smirking Jackdaw to carry, her three companions all looked between each other with quirked brows and followed her through to the large ballroom. Cnut turned to smile, welcoming his younger sister but his face fell seeing the mood she was in. Picking up her pace to take him off guard Runa grabbed a handful of Cnut’s shirt and side kicked his feet out from under him.
“Runa!” Ragnar called out standing from his seat with a lit cigar in his hand.
“Leave her be.” Brida put her hand on Ragnar’s arm guiding him to sit back down.
Cnut held his hands out as his sister continued to grip his shirt rummaging through his trouser pockets. Pulling out a set of keys she slapped his cheeks twice and stood straight ignoring his extended hand asking for help up.
“You.” She spoke freeing a key from the heavy chain, “Will no longer hide from your wife at my house.” She dropped the other keys on his chest with a fake smile and rounded the table Ragnar sat at with Uhtred, sitting herself down beside Brida.
“Runa, you know why I said no.” Cnut’s voice strained as he sat up.
“Yes, you have a family to protect, but am I not a part of that family?” Finan cleared his throat at her comment, removing his shades and folding them.
“Oof.” Brida chuckled, lightly slapping Runa’s thigh.
“You’re being childish.” Cnut chided.
“Possibly.” She shrugged, paying no more mind to her older sibling.
“Enough. Back to our discussion, brother, what do you think?” Ragnar spoke leaning onto his elbows against the table directing his gaze to Uhtred.
“I say do it.”
“Do what, boss?” Finan asked, crossing an arm over his chest and rubbing at his beard.
“Ragnar’s going to start holding casino nights here, and we’re finally going to get to work turning the Beacon into a gentleman’s club.” Uhtred clarified.
“What about the guy who followed Runa?” Sihtric queried, looking from the redhead to his boss.
“What about him? We know he was probably sent by Erik and Sigefrid, and the plan failed.” Ragnar responded nonchalantly. Sihtric’s eyes met Runa’s, the flash of anger that mirrored his disappearing just as quickly as it appeared.
“Wow.” Runa’s tone was full of disbelief, she was growing more annoyed with how her brother and cousin were brushing off the events of last night.
“Look, we expected them to try something and it didn’t work, so we’re going to hit them where they will really feel it.” Ragnar added rolling the burning end of his cigar against a glass ashtray.
“Their wallets.” Cnut chimed with a smile.
“No, you’re thinking about your wallets.” Runa responded, shaking her head.
“I told you she would call you out on it.” Brida had warned the men earlier on of this reaction.
“Do you support this?” Runa questioned Brida with raised brows.
“No, I’m starting to agree with you. We should wreck their casino.” Brida declared, folding her arms. Sihtric nodded silently in agreement, he’d had enough of just sitting back letting the brothers across town do as they please.
“This will mess with them, they won’t like it.” Ragnar insisted.
“I don’t thin-“
“No more, Runa. This is how we’re handling it, and you will all do as you’re told.” Ragnar’s voice raised; his eyes scanning over each person in the room.
The sales woman standing behind the glass counter of a quaint clothing store eyed Finan curiously, he could see she was speculating what he was doing there having a hushed debate with Runa through the curtain of the dressing room. Business was to continue as usual with Finan keeping Runa at his side when working, but he didn’t think it would include taking her shopping if it was needed.
“Would you just please hurry up?” He fought to keep a smile on his face but his voice was strained.
“I can’t rush this, if I damage the fabric I have to pay for it.” Runa quietly sang back, struggling with a zip as Finan stood in the almost foreign space surrounded by delicate silks and chiffon.
“Do you not have a dress at home you could just wear?” A frown now on his face.
“Not one that fits the dumb theme.” Ragnar had decided that for his opening casino night it was to be a Hollywood Glamour party with the elite of London attending in their droves.
“What do you think?” Runa asked, stepping out from behind the curtain.
Finan stammered at her appearance, a low sweetheart neck adorned with dainty delicate fabric flowers exposed the top of her cleavage with corset boning accentuating and defining her waist, falling away to a staggered skirt that draped elegantly from her frame.
“You look great.” He managed and fought to keep his eyes on hers, noticing the pale blue dress brought out the colour of her eyes.
“Right, thank you for that wonderful insight.” She sassed, turning to go back into the changing room and Finan just caught sight of the bite mark decorating her shoulder. Swallowing the jealousy that stung him he turned meeting the gaze of the woman behind the counter and quickly fixed his face into a smile offering her an awkward wave.

PETRICHOR | sihtric x oc | part twelve
part one
12. tidman, thyra, and a fire
They had rowed back to Coccham, retaking Gisela’s hall and home without a shed of blood. The Bishop Erkenwald was now leaving for Winchester, and upon Uhtred’s orders they were to join him, pretending to act as a guard. He and Osferth would follow soon after they killed Skade, and minus one curse.
Arriving at Winchester, Steappa had allowed them to enter, though not before a tedious delay. Sihtric, Finan and Ghylena now stood at the stables.
“Is that Aethelwold the sword-Dane I see?” Finan mocked, “Looks like you’ve mislaid an eye.”
“I see you perfectly, Finan. Though I do not see your master.” “Unsurprising.” Ghylena muttered.
“Uhtred. Where is he?” Aethelwold’s face was marred and grisly, but Ghylena thought he looked just as ugly as he always had.
“Standing at your blind-side, perhaps.” Finan threw, and Sihtric huffed a laugh.
Moving on towards the steps to the palace, Ghylena moved to approach the Bishop Erkenwald.
“Bishop!” She put on a sickeningly sweet voice, “Bishop, pardon me, but I heard from the men that there is to be a wedding?” “Edward is to marry, yes. A sweet girl, like yourself.”
Ghylena smiled wider, hoping to hide the disgust in her eyes, “Yes, of course. Only it is that I love a good wedding— I myself have found great peace in my marriage. I was wondering if it would be acceptable were my friends and I to stay a short while? Just long enough to enjoy the celebrations, Lord, that is all.”
The Bishop nodded, falling for her supplication, “You are welcome, Lady, I’m sure, as are your people.”
“Many thanks to you, Bishop.” Ghlyena smiled as serenely as she could as the man walked away.
Finan and Sihtric approached behind her then.
“Laying it on a bit thick, weren’t we?” An Irish accent lilted.
Ghylena’s bare grin dropped, her cheeks aching as she snipped, “Do you want the plan to work or not, Finan?”
Sihtric stood in front of her now, a small bouquet of pleasant flowers in hand. She sent him a questioning look, but his only reply was to reach into her hair and place the delicate flowers throughout her braids. She stared at him in awe.
“Awk, ye wee sap.” Finan feigned disgust, before being jumped by the unforeseen arrival of Osferth.
“Walk with me, Lena. We are not needed for this part.” Sihtric suggested, tucking the last bloom behind her ear.
Still entranced by her thoughtful husband, Ghylena about managed a nod before he smirked— enjoying his effect on her— and dragged her away by the hand.
<>
They had been walking and talking for most of the evening, and now night had come, and still they basked in each other’s presence, content in their brief peace.
Emerging from a side street back into a main line, Sihtric was the first to spot Aethelwold and his men as they strutted towards Beocca’s house.
Turning to look down at her, Sihtric kissed Lena’s forward before ushering her forward, “Go, follow them, go!”
Nodding, Lena dashed after them, throwing a look behind her to see Sihtric running to alert Finan and the rest of their men. Resting her hand lightly at her stomach, Ghylena followed Aethelwold’s band through the roads until they came upon Beocca’s house.
Pyrlig appeared then, standing between the horde and their target.
“If it is not the disgraced, yet forgiven Lord Aethelwold, sword drawn. You have stopped, I see, outside this house. ”
“You should show a little respect, Father Pyrlig.” Aethelwold simpered.
Pushing through the cloaked men, Ghylena stood herself beside Pyrlig.
“I believe it is you who should show some decorum, Lord Aethelwold. Or did Alfred take your manners as well as your eye?”
“You would let a woman stand with you as an equal, Pyrlig?” Aethelwold simpered.
“I would let this woman stand for me any day, which is more than I can say for you, Lord.”
“Father,” Lord Sigebriht spoke now, “There is an outlaw walking free.”
Pyrlig pretended to be afraid, looking from side to side as he replied, “An outlaw? Who?”
“It is not your place to ask.” Aethelwold looked away.
“And it is not your place to raid someone’s home, Lord.” Ghylena declared.
Soon after this, Beocca came out of his home, with Aethelwold surrounding the house with his men before Sihtric arrived with their back up. Thyra exited the home then, settling the dispute by allowing the men to enter and search.
“Beocca, I have been listening. If these men wish to look inside our home, then we should allow it. We have nothing to hide, nothing at all. Please, come inside, Aethelwold.”
After searching the building and coming up with nothing, the men left; Uhtred hidden under the floorboards in an emergency ditch built by Thyra.
Father Beocca spoke as Aethelwold left, “Where in God’s name is he?”
<>
A man had harassed Thyra in the streets, she came home crying, and Hild had been the first to notice. Not soon after, Beocca had exploded into the streets, Uhtred and his warriors following close behind.
Beocca was red-faced, enraged and chewing at the bit.
“TIDMAN! I’m looking for a rat named Tidman!” Beocca yelled, “Are you Tidman? I asked, are you Tidman?”
Aethelwold appeared then, always popping up where he’s not wanted.
“Father Beocca, good morning. And Uhtred, free man of Wessex.”
“I’m looking for a man named Tidman. Does the coward belong to you?”
“He does not.” “I am not a coward,” the lump on the bench spoke then, a great big shit of a man who’s mouth was too big for his jaw, “What is it you want, priest?”
Eyes lit with excitement, Ghylena couldn’t wait to see the priest hit him.
“What I want, oaf, is for you to heed my warning. Speak to or go near my wife again and I shall beat the shit from you! It is a promise.” “I called your woman a Dane, is that… is that not what she is?”
“Have you not understood me?” Beocca leaned closer, “You don’t appear to be the cleverest of men.”
“Do you speak to me as a man or a priest?” Tidman’s teeth were yellow, if not brown.
And then Beocca pounced, head butting the man and roaring “Does that answer your question!? DOES IT?!”
Ghylena laughed, wide-mouthed and whole-heartedly giggling with joy at the sigh of Tidman’s comeuppance. She stood behind them all, leaning against the wall now with her hands on her hilts, watching the magic unfold. Since Osferth’s news of Skade’s death, Ghylena felt lighter and more alive, as if the clouds had finally parted on a crisp winter morning.
The men moved to pull Beocca off Tidman, but Ghylena could see Sihtric smiling, unable to hide his mirth at the shock of a priest beating a man.
When Beocca lied and claimed to be calm only to lunge for him again, giving Tidman a bloody nose and straw-covered back, Ghylena felt herself glowing with pride and satisfaction.
Good, she thought, Show them that Thyra is not unprotected.
<>
Alfred died the next day.
Being that Beocca had to be at the front of the hall, performing the funeral rites, Ghylena had offered to kept Thyra company and as such, was now stood beside her friend, enduring the same intolerable pestering as she from the rat Tidman.
Shoving into their backs, Tidman kept his voice low, unwilling to create a fuss. It was only for Ghylena’s respect for the dead that she did not turn around to break his nose.
“You Danes should not be here.” He hissed.
Seeing Thyra’s anxiety, and feeling extremely uncomfortable herself, Ghylena took her by the hand and silently led her from the hall.
Once outside the doors, she spoke, “Let’s just take you home, hm?”
Smiling in thanks, Thyra still seemed unsettled as she replied, “Yes, that sounds like a good idea.”
When they had come within sightline of the home, Tidman made his presence known, throwing rocks and insults at their backs. Unwilling to frighten Thyra more, Ghylena simply grit her teeth and ushered her to the house.
“Come Thyra, get inside and I will handle him. Bolt the door, hide.”
Rushing to the house, Ghylena managed to push Thyra through the doorway, right before turning around into the stinking presence of Tidman. She hadn’t realised how close he had been behind them, gasping in shock and instantly regretting it whenever she inhaled a lungful of his sweat and stench.
Schooling her expression, Ghylena turned her head up to look him in the eye, and felt her stomach roll at the hungry look in his eyes.
He was so close to her that if she lifted her arm in front of her it would be touching his chest, and she felt trapped. Having just been at the palace, she was weaponless, forced to leave her daggers outside the hall before entering.
Tidman clearly had secured his own weapons before stalking them.
“Come no closer!” She couldn’t help the waver in her voice, realising that no-one knew where she was and that she might need help.
“Little Dane wants to play hero, does she?” Tidman snorted.
“Little Dane would drop you to your knees in the square, shit-stain.” His insults had gotten to her, raising a flare of her temper in defiance of her fear.
Suddenly, he shot forward, invading her space and forcing her to back into the door.
He smirked, and his rotten breath stank. “Not so feisty now, are we?”
Ghylena steeled herself, tilting her head before suddenly punching him in the gut and trying to run under his arm.
She nearly made it, 2 paces behind him before he reached around and caught hold of her hair, still with Sihtric’s flowers braided through it.
A yelp of pain shot from her as he yanked her backwards, fisting his fingers against her scalp before throwing her to the ground.
Wincing from pain and gasping for air after being winded, Ghylena took one second too long to recover, and then he was on top of her. A growl of frustration left her as he held her arms down, legs on either side of her waist and pinning her with his weight.
“Bastard!” She yelled, spitting in his face with precision.
Her saliva dripped from his eye now, and apparently she had finally broken his inflated ego, making him give up on trying to harass her.
Using his grip on her hair to slam her skull into the floor, he brutally knocked her out before climbing off of her.
Spitting on her unconscious body, he turned to Thyra’s home, and left with one hushed promise.
“I’ll come back for you after I’ve had the redhead.”
<>
The heat and noise was what roused her.
Ghylena slowly dragged her eyes open, head pounding and confused as to where she was.
Searing flames roared around her, and the yells of desperate men rang into the night.
Pushing herself up from the ground, Ghylena steadied her feet beneath her before moving away from the burning house as fast as she could.
What in holy hells happened? How did I end up here? She thought.
Fumbling away from the smoke, Ghylena heaved clean air into her lungs as her hand raised to her head, confused by the sticky feeling on her skin.
She winced, pain splicing her head as her fingers came away bloody.
Staring at the red, her memory came rushing back to her in that moment.
Tidman.
Thyra.
Was Thyra alright? Was she still in the house? Ghylena turned to the fire again, face growing in horror as the building was engulfed, and began to crumble.
Still dizzy, and with a thumping headache, Ghylena didn’t hear Sihtric when he first ran to her. Only when he turned her by the shoulder to face him, looking her in the eyes and shaking her from her horrified stupor, did she hear him.
“Lena! Lena, what happened?! You’re bleeding?” He was frantic.
Shaking her head, she could only choke out one word, “Thyra.”
Finan came running then, joining the men who were desperately trying to fight the blaze, but it was hopeless. The thatched roof of the porch dropped to the ground then, as Finan asked for Thyra’s whereabouts. Lena started to cry then, helpless dread eating at her stomach.
Thyra was still inside, trapped in a death that Ghylena helped create.
The fire only burned hotter.

I feel like we should talk more.
(This is gonna get kind of rambly, but stay with me here)
Inbox is open for fandom chats or whatever else. I respond in one of two ways: immediately like a creeper or it takes a while cause I got trapped by a nap, but either way. I respond!
Come hop into my askbox, especially if you wanna talk The Last Kingdom, Peaky Blinders or any other fandom or topic!
I'll start with some fandom opinions: Eh hem...
Shameless should have been about a Black family on the South Side of Chicago. I would like her (see below) play Fiona
Tumblr media
GOOD GIRLS FUMBLED THE BAG!!!! MANNY MONTANA CARRIED THAT SHOW!
I didn't watch the first season of The Last Kingdom, and therefore don't get people's attachments to Aethelwold or Iseult, but I respect it lol
The last season of Mayans was such a collection of High/Low moments, I'm still unsure about watching the final season that's coming out soon
There's too many Marvel shows and movies and spinoffs now. I feel like a fussy old man yelling at a cloud here, but dammit, enough is enough! And if you're gonna do all this Marvel content, then at least let Sam Wilson be the hero and MAIN character he's meant to be!
If I were in True Blood, I would want to be a vampire. But I'd want my maker to be long dead by the time I got to Bon Temps
I can't stand Grace Burgess. Full stop.
Here's a list of Girlboss "Evil" Ladies that I adore: Lucretia and Illythia from Spartacus, Dagmar from Enchantment, Brida from The Last Kingdom, POLLY MFING GRAY from Peaky Blinders, Gemma from Sons of Anarchy, Jinx from Arcane, Me, NAEVIA my angel queen from Spartacus, Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones
Despite loving The Last Kingdom and Peaky Blinders, I normally don't watch shows like those anymore because I get very bored with and feel removed from shows/movies with a majority white only cast. I like to place myself into the story, and the lack of diversity in media really takes me out of the story.
I think more TV shows should have a random musical episode if applicable

Alfred's strength, I believe, comes from his faith. From God.
Do you believe in this God?
I believe in myself.
