USING RELIGHT FOR RESHADE - a tutorial by amoebae

[You can also find this tutorial over at imgur and patreon]

ReLight is a premium shader for ReShade made by Marty's Mods (Pascal Gilcher). It allows you to add four new lights to your scene that help illuminate, and create realism and drama. To download and use ReLight you need to subscribe to the Path Tracers tier on Gilcher's Patreon to get access to the iMMERSE Ultimate package of shaders. Once subscribed, you'll be prompted to link your Patreon account to discord, and then you'll be granted access to his discord server, and, most importantly, to the Path Tracers discussion channel and the Downloads Level 2 channel, which is where you will find ReLight (along with the other premium shaders included in that tier). 

Be sure to also download the up-to-date free iMMERSE shader package, because you'll need the Launchpad shader and some of the other included files.

The following guide is for the older qUINT_relight.fx version of ReLight. The latest version of ReLight is MartysMods_RELIGHT.fx, released on 31st December 2023. Many of the settings have changed in the newer version, but you can still use this guide to help understand how to enable and position lights. The guide will be updated/rewritten once I've had time to properly play around with the new version. You can continue to use the older version if you'd prefer.

When you turn on ReLight in the ReShade menu you'll be greeted with these settings. Yours may look different because I've used it a lot and it remembers your last settings.

Take a look at the settings at the top.

Use Smooth Normals = On

Trace Shadows = On

Filter Shadows = On

Use Temporal Supersampling = On

Shadow Mode = Trace All

Shadow Quality = Ultra (change this if you get bad performance)

Shadow Sharpness = I have mine set around 0.65 but you can play around with whatever looks best

Z Thickness = Play around with this too. It controls how realistically shadows fall on and around objects

At the very bottom of the settings is Visualize Light Position. Turn this on so you can easily see where your lights are.

Now we can turn on one of our lights. Remember, it remembers your previous settings so yours will look different to mine the first time you use it.

Under Light 0 check the Active box.

You should see a big circle appear somewhere on the screen. If you have any object close enough to it, you should see them get brighter. If nothing is close to the circle you may not see any difference.

You can see a difference between this screenshot and the last - Shadowheart's face is brighter.

Now it's time to move the light where we want it and change it to a colour we like.

Under the Active box you'll see a row of 3 boxes containing numbers, next to the word Position. These control the coordinates of your circle of light in relation to the screen. You can place your mouse inside these boxes and move it while holding down left-click to change the value a little like a slider.

Left box = moves the circle left/right

Middle box = moves the circle up/down

Right box = moves the circle forward/back

In this shot I've moved the circle of light over to the right and a little further back so it better illuminates the front of Shadowheart's face.

Next you can choose the colour of your light.

In the row below Position you'll see it says Tint. Click on the coloured box next to Tint and it will bring up the colour picker you see in the screenshot. Choose your colour from here. Click anywhere in the main ReShade menu to close the colour picker.

I adjusted the position and the tint a little more until I had it exactly where I wanted it. You can see a darker circle now over in the top right of the screen (my mouse cursor is hovering over it to make it easier to see).

You can use the Intensity slider (directly below Tint) to control how bright the light should be.

You may need to go back and forth between the Position, Tint, and Intensity settings until you get just the right effect.

Here's a reminder of what the picture looks like without that added light. Compare it to the screenshot above to see how great our new little light has been at helping illuminate Shadowheart.

You can turn individual lights on and off whenever you want by checking or unchecking the Active box next to the light in question. It will save your settings.

Now I want to add a second light. I've moved my ReShade window over a little so I can see what I'm doing.

I turned on the Active box under Light 1, and positioned my new light where I wanted it. Look over to the left of the statue in the background. You'll see my mouse cursor, and directly above it is a tiny blue circle. That's our second light!

The further you move the light away from the camera (using the right-hand box under Position) the smaller the circle gets, because it's further away!

I made this light blue, and I turned the intensity up quite high. This has helped illuminate the statue and added nice shadows that help give it some depth.

Here's a screenshot to remind you what everything looks like without any of the ReLight lights I added.

And here's a screenshot showing how everything looks with ReLight turned on and my two lights in action. I chose a subtle effect because I just wanted to draw attention to Shadowheart's face and to the statue behind her.

When you close the ReShade menu the circles that helped you know where your lights were will go away, but the light they cast will remain. Notice how you can't see the two circles in this shot?

You can also uncheck the Visualize Light Position box if you want to hide the circles while keeping the ReShade menu open. This can be helpful if they're obscuring parts of the scene that you need to see while you continue editing.

And that's it! You can add up to 4 lights and control them independently from one another. You can use them to just help illuminate a character for a portrait, to add drama with bold lighting, or to increase the realism of a scene with better shadows and light falling where you would expect it to. If you have a big fiery sword you can add a light to it that makes orange light cast onto the character who is holding it, which can look really cool. The only limit is your imagination.

(If I ever learn how to make videos I'll translate this tutorial into an easier format, but for now I hope this helps.)

Chan:

It was almost a tradition for you and Chan to listen to a joint playlist when you each worked on your own things. It was a small way of being connected when you both had to stay focused. After a few hours of this, you were growing tired of working and longed for a bit of attention. When "God's Menu" came on, you promptly skipped it.

Chan turned around to give you a somewhat confused look, but there was mischief hidden in it (think that look he gave Felix on stage when Felix said he liked being called best leader). Without even talking, he'd recognize your need for a bit of attention and he'd take a break.

Minho:

You and Minho always loved to tease each other. It was almost the love language between you too. He loved discreetly grabbing your ass when you were not expecting it just to see your eyes widen. His other antics often were crimes of opportunity like when he got you relighting candles on your birthday.

Deciding to play a small trick on him, you skip a Stray Kids song you have playing while doing some housework. Minho was in another room, but you knew he was also listening. When you did it again though, this prompted him to come out and send you a playful glare before he came and planted a kiss on you.

Changbin:

Road trips with Changbin also involved making a joint playlist for the drive. Of course, this included Stray Kids songs. Throughout the drive, Changbin had playfully teased you about some of your choices, so when "Domino" came on, you skipped it.

Changbin was shocked and immediately asked you why you skipped it and went back to play the song again. After making a sarcastic comment, Changbin will roll his eyes, but you'll see the wide smile on his face as he drives.

Hyunjin:

You and Hyunjin both enjoyed having music on in the background of literally everything you did. Currently, the two of you were playing video games, something you were about evenly skilled at, but which Hyunjin had been winning at that night.

As a petty show of revenge after you once again lost, you skipped the Stray Kids song that played in the background, quickly changing it to a song you liked that Hyunjin was not fond of. You almost immediately were overcome by Hyunjin tickling you.

Jisung:

Listening to music with Jisung was nearly a date at this point in your relationship. He enjoyed listening to the newest releases for inspiration and you mixed in some of your favorite songs. Each of you had introduced the other to a new artist and it was an activity you could mutually enjoy.

However, that day, Jisung had been particularly mischievous that day. From small annoyances like tugging at your ponytail to finding any way to annoy you, you decided to get him back. When a Stray Kids song came on, you quickly changed the song and caught him off guard. Jisung immediately caught on and soon the two of you were in a war of skipping songs.

Felix:

You and Felix put on a playlist while you baked cookies. It was taking longer than usual as the two of you danced to Twice and got distracted, but that was part of the fun. Though, when he tossed a bit of flour onto your face, the two of you found small ways to get back at each other.

Eventually, you heard a Stray Kids song come on and skipped it. At first, Felix was simply confused until he made eye contact with you and noticed your mischievous smile. He'd laugh and the two of you would take turns trolling each other with the music until the cookies are done.

Seungmin:

Seungmin isn't really one to pull pranks in the traditional way, but he had been roasting and teasing you all day. You were never offended, knowing Seungmin was either being honest in his own way or just having a bit of fun. Though, it was starting to get on your nerves.

So, when "Can't Stop" came on, you skipped it, muttering something about being tired of it. Seungmin looked at you a bit incredulously, but he still smiled, and eventually, he laughed before playfully telling you that you would regret it.

Jeongin:

Jeongin enjoyed teasing you in a similar fashion to Seungmin. However, he also would sometimes pull pranks, especially if another member got in cahoots with him. On this particular day, the two of you were out shopping and sharing a pair of AirPods to listen to the same playlist. He'd been annoying you in a vein similar to a little brother.

So, when "Maknae On Top" came on, you promptly skipped it and made Jeongin a little off guard. He immediately caught on though and laughed. Jeongin somewhat relented the upper hand to you--at least until he figured out how to get you back.

Italian folk magic - Increase wealth spell

Italian folk magic encompasses a variety of traditional practices and beliefs, including spells aimed at increasing wealth and abundance. I am sharing these generational family spells in hopes to spread knowledge & help to educate beginner folk magic witches / practitioners.

Here's a simple Italian folk magic spell that focuses on attracting financial prosperity:

Materials needed:

- A small green candle

- Olive oil

- A pinch of basil

- A piece of paper

- A pen or pencil

- A small dish or bowl

Instructions:

1. Begin by preparing your workspace. Find a quiet area where you can perform the spell without distractions.

2. Take the green candle and anoint it with olive oil. As you do so, visualize money and abundance flowing towards you. Feel the sense of financial security and freedom.

3. Sprinkle a pinch of basil onto the anointed candle, symbolizing growth and prosperity.

4. Place the candle in a holder and light it, focusing your attention on the flame. Imagine it radiating energy and attracting wealth into your life.

5. Take the piece of paper and write down your financial goals and aspirations. Be specific and clear about what you want to achieve. Visualize yourself already enjoying the abundance and prosperity you desire.

6. Fold the paper and place it in the dish or bowl in front of the candle.

7. As the candle burns, say the following incantation or create your own words:

"By the candle's vibrant glow,

I call upon abundance to flow.

9. Allow the candle to burn completely or extinguish it if you need to leave the area. If you decide to extinguish it, relight the candle when you return until it burns out completely.

10. Keep the folded paper in a safe place, such as a wallet or a drawer, to reinforce your intention and remind yourself of your financial goals.

Remember, while spells can be a meaningful way to focus your intention and energy, they should be seen as tools for empowerment and manifestation. It's important to also take practical actions and make responsible financial decisions to support your goal of increasing wealth.

All About Beltane

Beltane, also known as Bealtaine in Irish, is a Gaelic holiday traditionally held on May 1st or the halfway point between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. It is believed to be named after the Celtic sun god Belenus. It was widely observed in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle Of Man, and is one of the 4 major Celtic fire festivals. It is mentioned in even the earliest Irish literature and marked the beginning of summer and used as the marker to drive cattle into their summer pastures. Although public celebrations have mostly fallen out after the 20th century and many traditions have been mixed with other cultural holidays (such as the Roman holiday May Day), many Celtic Neopagans and Wiccans still celebrate, and many local traditions still continue, causing it to now get a cultural revival.

Traditionally, rituals were held to protect the livestock that moved pastures, along with crops, dairy products, and people, and to encourage growth. It was also important to appease the Aos Sí, or nature spirits/fairies, which were believed to be more active then.

According to early medieval texts in 908, druids would make two bonfires and drive cattle between them to protect them from disease. In the 18th and 19th centuries, bonfires continued to be an important part of the celebrations. Before the bonfires were lit, all hearth fires were put out, and then relit using the fire from the Beltane bonfires after the celebration.

Continuing into the 19th century, cattle were still driven over or between flames, or sometimes around the fires or made to leap over. The people themselves did as well for good luck and protection. Once the fires died down, people would dab themselves with the ashes and sprinkle them over their crops and livestock. Torches from the bonfires would also be brought home and carried around the home or boundaries, and also used to relight the hearth.

Food was also an important part of the Beltane festival, and usually included a feast of lamb, which, historically, was sacrificed. In 1769, it was written that a hot drink, called a caudle, made of eggs, butter, oatmeal, and milk was served, along with tossing a bit on the ground as an offering. A Beltane Bannock, a type of oatmeal cake, was also written to be important and had a few traditions around it.

In one tradition, the Beltane Bannock had nine knobs on it and each person would take the bannock and face the fire, proceeding to break off the knobs of bannock one at a time and tossing them behind their shoulder as an offering to the spirits for protection over their livestock and from predators (one for the cow, one for the sheep, one for the fox, etc). Afterwards, they would drink the caudle.

According to other 18th century writers, there was another Beltane Bannock tradition where the bannock would be cut into slices and one was marked with charcoal. The slices were then thrown into a bonnet and everyone would take one out while blindfolded. According to one writer, whoever pulled the marked bannock slice had to leap through the fire 3 times. According to another, the person would instead be pretend-thrown into the fire and for some time afterward people would talk about the person as if they were dead. This may have always been symbolic, or it may have been a tradition from a time where actual human sacrifice was used. This tradition was also near identical to May Day traditions that occurred in Wales and other parts of Europe, however.

Other traditions including flowers and plants were also observed, especially ones that evoked fire. Documents from the 19th century cite that yellow and white flowers, such as primrose, rowan, hawthorn, gorse, hazel, and marsh marigold was used and placed at doorways and windows. Sometimes they were strewn into garland, and other times they were made into bouquets, made into crosses, or fastened to them. They were also fastened to cows and milking/butter equipment.

Decorating a May Bush or May Bough was also a widespread tradition, and it usually consisted of a small tree or branch (typically hawthorn, rowan, holly, or sycamore) decorated with bright flowers, ribbons, candles, painted shells or egg shells from Easter, and more. In some traditions they also decorated it with gold and silver May Balls, which were hurling balls, that were then either given out to children or gifted to winners of a hurling match. It was also known as the only acceptable time to cut a thorn tree, as they were associated with fairies and may have also been a relic of worshipping tree spirits. It would either be decorated where it grew, or branches hung over windows, doors, roofs, and barns either inside or outside. Traditionally, it was the responsibility of the eldest of the house to decorate it.

The tree was usually left up until May 31st, but in some traditions it would be burned in the festival bonfire after singing and dancing around it. In Dublin and Belfast, May Bushes were brought into town and decorated by the whole neighborhood, with each neighborhood competing for the most beautiful bush. These competitions could also lead to neighborhoods attempting to steal others May Bushes, which eventually led to the May Bush being outlawed in Victorian times.

Appeasing the fairies was also a big part in Beltane celebrations, with many traditions revolving around offerings to the fairies and also warding them off, as there were many fears around them stealing dairy. One protection tradition was to leave 3 black coals under the butter churn. Another was to hang May Boughs on the milk pails. And yet another was to hang cattle tails in the barns. Flowers were also used to decorate the cattle's horns for good luck.

Farmers would also lead a procession around the boundaries of the farm and would "carry with them seeds of grain, implements of husbandry, the first well water, and the herb vervain (or rowan)", stopping at the four cardinal points of direction starting at the east, and performing rituals towards each direction at each stop. These processions were said to bring protection of their farm produce and encourage fertility. Some people also made the sign of the cross using milk on the backside of cattle for good luck.

As for fairy offerings, one tradition was to pour milk or leave food at places associated with the fairies such as "fairy trees". In Ireland, cattle were brought to "fairy forts" where a small amount of their blood was poured into the earth with prayers of the herd's safety. Sometimes, the blood would be left to dry and then be burnt.

Visiting holy wells was also a popular way to celebrate Beltane. Visitors would walk sunwise, moving from east to west, around the well while praying for health. They would then leave offerings of coins or cloth. The first water drawn from the well on Beltane was thought to be especially potent, and would bring good luck to the person who drew it.

Morning dew on Beltane was also thought to bring goodluck and health, and maidens would wash their face with it or roll in it at dawn or before sunrise on Beltane. It was also collected in a jar, left in sunlight, and then filtered. The dew was said to increase sexual attractiveness, maintain youthfulness, protect from sun damage, and ensure skin health during the ensuing year.

Modern day celebrations may vary from these more traditional festival activities, but many choose to incorporate or take inspiration from the traditions at least. Popular traditions still revolve around bonfires, feasts, decorating a May Bush, and focusing on protection and growth.

Sudden realisation that Yuki from The Cat Returns and Louise/Luisa from Whisper of the Heart are very visually similar and wondering if there's any deeper connection or if Louise's colourations were borrowed from WotH so as not to introduce a wholly unfamiliar kitty that will be significant not only to the plot, but to the protagonist of the sequel.

It could be just that kind of practical reason.

... Buuuut it could also be fun to stipulate that Yuki is perhaps a reincarnation of sorts. TCR could easily be interpreted as being Shizuku's finalised story from WotH, with how Muta and the Baron are used and Shizuku's vision for the Baron acting as a guide and inspiration to a young lady in trouble.

Why not include Louise in that somehow? Shizuku is a very sensitive child and writer, it would not surprise me that she'd be discomforted to give the Baron in her story a happy love story and ending when he as the statue in real life is still living in hope (projected by humans, but still, the projection is a narrative, and Shizuku's story also being a narrative, it feels right to describe the human projection as though it is real, at least in relation to TCR).

It's quite recently born, compared to the Baron, who was made pre-WWII.

In the manga, its implied that the maker of Baron perished or had to run away from Germany when the world war started. "The story goes back over fifty years. / At the time, I was working for an import-export comapny... I often traveled back and forth between Japan and Europe." [Panel is of Northern Germany, displaying the capital of Berlin, and the North Sea and Baltic Sea.] (next page) "One day, in the corner of a coffee house, I discovered this cat. / I spent the next three days begging the owner to sell it to me. Finally, he gave in. / On one condition... / The cat was to be part of a set. He was working on the cat's companion, / and asked that I hold off selling him until the female cat was created. / I agreed to wait until the cat's companion was sent to me, and returned to Japan with only Sir Cat here. / But in the meantime, the war broke out and the cat's promised companion never arrived. / My company went bankrupt as well. After the war, I was only able to return to Germany once. / Do you see here, on the soles of his shoes?" [Panel is that of the shop owner pointing to the bottom of the Baron's shoes, indeed displaying a name. I can¨t read it on the digital page though; I might need the printed version, but this too would be very small.] "The doll maker inscribed his name. / With that information in hand, I searched high and low for him. In the manga, Shizuku reads up on Germany and WWII as part of her research and a direct result of hearing the story of Baron's creation. The titles include: "The Art and E[xxx] of Germany", "The People of Germany" (second-thickest book in the stack), "the Eurasian Enigma", "Puppets of the World", "The Second World War", "The Dolt Quihote and Conquistadors", "Famous Museums in Europe", "West-Germany" (thickest book in the stack), and "Travels through Europe".

That aside this was greatly to argue my point that if the companion piece (Louise) was destroyed or interrupted and never finished in WWII, then perhaps it could have been seen as a "death". It's one of the theories Shizuku might hold, but would not voice to the shop owner (Nishi Shirou) who values the hope of the story.

And so it might have been a rough concept of hers to have Yuki be a reincarnation of Louise, and perhaps relight her romance with the Baron. She ultimately chooses against that creative decision, but she does keep Louise's colours in Yuki.

Hm, oh! I forgot! In the manga, the Cat Kingdom is the place of dead cats. Muta describes it derisively as a place of ghosts who cannot acknowledge that they are dead, if my memory serves right. It doesn't seem that far-stretched then to interpret Yuki as the departed Louise...

Additional worth of note, is that the romance aspect is still kept, just not with Baron; also, that the engagement/arranged marriage/soulmate "We knew each other before we were made or met" aspect is switched out in favour of an unexpected love separated by class (palace servant and prince). This felt like it was made in mind for Lune though, rather than as a "well there needs to be romance somewhere!", in the sense that by giving him a love interest then it's an easy narrative excuse for him not to desire the marriage (aside from not knowing Haru, Haru being a human, and also Haru is a child). His heart is occupied already!

Getting all soft thinking about the rare occasions of Link actually speaking verbally out loud to Zelda.

At one point it did bug her, ate at her, felt that his silence was a way of him mocking her failure to her role while he seemingly had everything figured out and held everyone's praise - including her father's. However, that was way before Link had actually explained his reasoning to her, the weight of the world being on his shoulders and felt it upon himself to commit to a silent vigil not to disappoint the people of the kingdom that he knows is heavily relying on him. That alone changed how the princess viewed the knight.

Now, even moreso after the Calamity, she doesn't mind. Link has ways of communicating outside of verbal speech in ways of nods, points, and his own unique form of sign language she's very much well picked up on understanding! She even likes to think she's the most expert on said sign language, a badge she wears in prideful honor.

Link is a very good listener and it helps he very much enjoys hearing the princess talk, especially about her research, he can listen to her for hours on end about scientific things that he'll admit he's not the most knowledgeable about to where at some points Zelda could be rambling about something he has no clue what even is but he still enjoys listening to her either way because it's her and talking about these things makes her happy! So he'll just nod along and sign very simple questions that relights the princess' excitement even more as she'll go into further detail about whatever and Link is just left like: :)

On the rare occasions Link does actually speak he is very soft spoken, especially pre-Calamity. Honest to Hylia Zelda nearly fainted the first time she actually heard him. One of these instances I like to think was definitely after the spring of Courage, granted it wasn't the first time I think Zelda has heard him but I feel like it was one that was definitely most impactful.

Just Link helping her out of the spring and they sit at the foot of the water for a bit, Zelda probably crying and still cursing at herself saying so much damming things about herself like she's a failure, a burden, and ect and then just out of nowhere:

"You're not a failure." Or something along those lines, just something to try to get through to her that she isn't all those cruel things her father or some gossipers said her out to be. She is so much more than that and he knows it, and he needs her to know it too.

So it's obvious given the fact Tulin seems at least a few years older than he was in breath of the wild and Riju as well seems definitely taller than she was previously shown as well that at least two or so years minimum have passed since that game, so everyone is going to go through some kind of change before the game starts and Zelda's new haircut seems to be one of them. I think it's very unlikely we'll actually see the actual hair getting cut in game and it'll realistically just be left as an unspoken thing but that just leaves room for speculation and headcanon!

That being said... Link vocally telling her point blank after maybe just one day out of the blue coming home from Kakariko Village visit (they lived together in the Hateno house, Nintendo can pry that from my cold dead hands) the moment she walks through the door, now with her hair now considerably shorter;

"You look breathtaking." Then he goes right back to whatever he was doing inside the home before she arrived leaving Zelda speechless at the doorway just: 🧍🏼‍♀️

Zelda's a bit awkward, she doesn't know how to address it but it makes her feel... giddy. Maybe she didn't know how she felt about the haircut at first when Impa presented her the mirror to check it how it turned out, at first it was a complex motion - a symbolic action that she was finally ready to leave the past behind and work towards a brighter future, but even still she had this swirling in her gut on the ride home. But now? She adores it, she's reassured of her choice. She is ready. And she's glad to have her beloved knight at her side to live out that future.

No matter what future hardships that are to come.

It's Marty's Mods day folks.

Marty (aka Pascal Gilcher) has released the latest updates to iMMERSE Pro and iMMERSE Ultimate. They include improvements to RTGI, a completely new ReLight (that *does* work in TS4), and a simplified download experience. Check out his discord and/or patreon!

dx9 has had a little bit of love, despite it being the awkward child of the family. Marty's DoF should compile as intended now, and ReLight is back, baby. You'll get better results in dx11+/Vulkan, but it works, it works! And is totally different to before.

Remember, as long as you have an active sub you can go back and download all the old releases if you want. TS4 players may prefer to stick with the original qUINT_ReLight, for example, although the new one is snazzy. Entirely up to you.

Okay so I named this sideblog "plutos-THOUGHTS-and-sketches" so it's time to take up my promise on that

This is gonna be my ancestors, elders, and a little bit of skid, spirits (I'll elaborate on them in another post) and some miscellaneous hcs that should line up together and i hope that it doesn't interfere with any lore. Buckle up this is gonna be a long one

So! Let's start off with ancestors. What are they?

I like to think that they used to be skids but then willingly gave away their light. They're just tired of existing for eternity, you know? So they dropped their eternality (they could still be killed but then would be reborn- like through eden! But there weren't any widespread methods of doing that before and they still got reborn :( ) and became a mortal species we now know as ancestors. They. Well. Reproduced. And forgot their roots. They forgot why they always feel like they're missing a major part of them (their light), and they didn't understand why light healed them and made them feel euphoric. (Note that only some light can properly heal them. Like. They're basically humans. Fire WILL burn. But, say, a manta's light will feel caressing.)

So what's up with Elders, then?

Basically! They're normal ancestors. Except, with a twist: they didn't give away ALL of their light. Only some of it, really. But it's a permanent move anyways. They continue to have limited lifespans, but they're much, much longer than normal ancestors. And some of their skid physiology (is that the right term?) kicks in, letting them grow and grow for as long as they aren't dead. (They can't be reborn, though.) (And does that mean that skids before used to be giant? Yes. Does that also mean that skids who don't eden run get to be taller? Also yes.) so they just get to be the cool guys, who remain to be above the rest, containing the knowledge and power and potential.

And now I'll elaborate a bit on some of the specifics about all of this. Healing is basically relighting another skid, and there is a whole, high paying, high status job that's basically having the right type of light that can heal others instead of burning them. (Without it, all krill attacks would have been lethal. Even then, it's expensive as hell.)

Ancestors have the lifespan of a normal human and elders are basically five times that. Magic (spells) exist and they can only be cast by the most talented, the most full of light ancestors. This means that basically all elders can do spells if they put their mind to it.

Anyways about the thing where i said they always feel like they're missing a part of themselves. So they die, wake up (I'll elaborate on that more in another post that will include my spirit hcs) and go like "wow i feel great" because eden basically inserted some light into them

They all have normal names, but the Elders that we know don't share theirs anymore with normal ancestors because of an.... Event. (This is bordering on my au stuff so we'll skip over that. Let your imagination go wild) Which means that if a skid (i hc that all skids know elder names (search sky cotl elder names if you don't know them, they have names)) suddenly calls one by their name ancestors would be confused and Elders would be flashbanged and wary

Masks are a traditional thing! Some people replace them with face markings instead and some don't wear anything at all (but those are few), which means that some cultures that are disconnected from the norm don't wear masks (like the nine colored deer spirits. Take a look. Feudal lord is the only one with an actual mask and even then you can't convince me that it isn't just giant eyebrows)

Eden exploded (shattering) from darkness corruption overload. How that happened is up to you but I hc that Resh is a skid and was tired of seeing everyone dying so he researched and came up with that solution to make everyone immortal

Here are some of my thoughts on DN: short stories!

And it's a lot. I'm crossposting this from my reddit account. Spoilers ahead

Book cover

Why does Ryuk look different on the cover? He looks like normal in all the actual stories but on the cover he has a red spot on his chest and red lips (among other things).

I do really like his right bracelet, it reminds me of the handcuffs Light and L had. I'm not sure if it's new but it's cool.

Speaking of the cover, there is 'Death Note' written in shiny letters and I only noticed once I turned my lamp on. That's such a nice detail.

Onto the stories themselves.

C-Kira

When I read the name Yamamoto, I though it was one of Light's friends from the manga, since they have the same name and appearance (spiky black hair and glasses). But apparently they are different characters entirely, which is kinda disappointing even if it doesn't change anything.

I'm bit confused on what's up with Matsuda. He tries to justify actions of C-Kira and I'm not sure where the writers where going with this. Like he was supportive of the original Kira but I kinda thought that ended when he shot Light several times.

I like that Near's hair got a bit longer from last time. Also the tator card towers are insanely cool.

And the way he just pops out of them on page 22 XD.

When Near recalls the video chat, we see a kid with a striped shirt, who I'm guessing is Matt

I haven't seen the Relight movies (I'm planning to one day), but I saw L's monster speech and I'm guessing it's based on this scene. The manga is pretty different from it, L is more forward and cold.

It's pretty interesting to hear that L picked Near and Mello because they didn't ask him any questions, just listened. Also bc of their glares.

And if this is the only time Near interacted with L, how does he know his appearence for his finger puppet? Did he see a photo or did he just get a description from someone else?

I can't believe Ryuk got other shinigamis, including the actual King of Death addicted to apples. Good lord.

Also I love how Ryuk refers to king of death as an "old fart". Makes it sound like he's the shinigami's dad XD

Near just tuning in, calling C-Kira a murderer and then signing out was pretty badass. Rip C-Kira, you were okay.

Speaking of C-kira, we actually know really little about them. All we got was they own a bunch of anime figurines.

I noticed how many bananas Meadra has eaten. Do all shinigami's have a specific food they like? Although all seem to like apples.

I like Near not being sure if he acted like L and how Rester tells him he's L now, it's pretty sweet and adds a bit of humanity to Near.

Also how are the towers holding together? Near's breaking laws of gravity

Meadra is such a nice friend, bringing Ryuk an apple.

This was a pretty fun story and it's always nice to see Halle Linder.

A-kira

I really like Minoru's design. He looks unique but still natural and his hairstyle is bit more modern compared to Light's.

Ryuk picked Minoru rather than just throwing the death note and waiting for somebody to find it. It's a interesting shift from his first appearence.

I love Ryuk's disappointment when Minoru told him he can't read the rules and demanded translation.

Minoru is so based for just trying to sell the notebook and his plan is really clever.

Ryuk holding the sign while literaly everyone in the studio can't see him is hilarious.

Near looks gorgeous with the long hair. <3 And so does Halle Linder with the shorter hair cut

Is that Donald Trump???!!! What even is this story?!

I love how Armonia just shows up with his chair and leaves immediately.

Wait, Yotsuba??? I was wondering what the Yotsuba group was actually leading, nice to get a conclusion.

I'm also intrigued that Minoru decided to keep only a fraction of the money, but it was pretty smart and he still got a bunch of money from it.

I can't believe Ryuk met Donald Trump.

In the end, Ryuk writes the name of Minoru in his note book. I thought the rule would kill him immediately? Or is Ryuk obligated to write it?

Anyways, this story was goofy, Minoru was entertainingly smart and I liked it.

I love how insane and fun everyone in this. We need more. Also Sayu has more to do. Yay :D

Why does Light think strawberries are more sexy than apples?

Misa's back!!! I missed her so much.

Her swimsuit is really bland, but Light looks great in the Hawaian shirt. He should wear it more often.

I'm not sure how to feel about Misa getting sexualized in this. I'm fine with fanservice and her being sexy, but I feel like she sometimes gets treated more as a source of fanservice than an actual character.

I noticed she's the one driving the car. And I don't think I ever saw Light drive. This leads me to a conclusion that Light never learned to drive. Headcanon that Misa just drives him around during those 5 years.

Also I live for Misa and Sayu's friendship!!!

Misa making bunny apples for Ryuk is so cute.

Somehow, "Disappointment" makes Misa and Light into a somewhat healthy couple.

In second to last strip, Light somehow pulls L up using only one arm. My boy is strong.

And the last strip, "Debate" depicts Rem holding a glass of wine (?). Since Rem doesn't have a favourite human food (unlike Ryuk, Meadra and Sidoh), maybe she likes to drink wine? Misa seems to enjoy drinking (in that one scene in the anime). Maybe she shared some with her.

L - one day

Watari narrates this like an animal documentary.

It also gives L both really bizarre and really normal traits, like he bathes in a washing machine and can't be bothered to put a shirt on, but he is fond of art galleries and theme parks.

Also L's a pop fan. Love that but I'm bit said we didn't get this in the main series. I'd love to see what interactions with Misa could come from that.

I'm glad to know that L does more than just sit in front of a computer.

L- Wammy's house

I love L, but he looks so weird as a kid. Glad he didn't stay like this forever.

So L came into the orphanage without a name. Did he name himself or did Wammy gave him that name? How do all the kids get their names? Why does Near have a normal name but then we have a guy named Mail?

How did L manage to defeat a group of kids who were trying to beat him (the new kid) up? And judging from what L says, this might be a common thing, so why isn't anyone doing anything about it?

Kids in Wammy's house share bedrooms so I wonder who did Near and Mello live with.

L and Watari's dynamic here is so hilarious.

Overall I'm not really big on this story. I know it's a matter of preference but L feels really overpowered and inhuman here. I kinda prefer when he gets some grounded moments, like his monster speech in Relight movies or even just his reaction to Misa kissing him on the cheek. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just not really my thing.

Taro Kagami

This is also a pilot for the series.

I noticed that the shinigami's look more human. I'm glad their designs got changed, I don't like how they look like sexy women with weird faces.

Taro is so cute! I really like his design.

I like how he just uses the Death note as a regular notebook and accidentally kills someone. It's a pretty common concept in memes about DN so it's nice to see it in a serious story.

I appreciate Taro's reaction to Ryuk and accidentally killing people. It's pretty realistic for a kid like him.

Takagi kinda looks like Raye Penber while Yamanaka's design didn't make it into the series. Its kinda a shame, since it's pretty unique.

I also like to see Taro's mom getting involved. We never really got any reaction from Sachiko.

The conversation between Yamanaka and Takagi about how they'd use the death note is really interesting. Yamanaka makes a great point on how most people would use it.

I also love him saying that Takagi would have to kill half the world to achieve his harmonious world.

And personality wise, Takagi reminds me a bit of Matsuda.

The death eraser is a cool concept. While it probably would be too overpowered in the main series, I'd love to see what could be done with it.

I'm also intrigued by the author of detective novels. His design is cool as well and I wonder if he somewhat inspired L's character. His deductions were great.

And so we're Taru's, when he figured out Miuro is the second DN owner.

The ending itself is amazing in my opinion. Taro manages to twist the truth just right, so Miuro trusts him while he keeps the original note book. Death note becomes a legend but Taru still has it after all these years. The ambiguity is brilliant.

And older Taru looks great with long hair.

I read on the wiki that Taru might have inspired Mikami and I honestly believe that, but he seems like a combination of both Taru and Miuro.

He gets his long hair from Taru, glasses and fanatism from Miuro (who kept screaming "Die, die, die" while frantically writing names of criminals) and being bullied from both.

This was my favourite story. It flows a bit better than the A and C kira stories and it had some really cool ideas.

Final thoughts

While I'm bit sad we didn't really have any female characters (since DN doesn't really have many and as a woman I'd like to see them) I had fun with this book, the art's great and it's nice to see the pilot, shorter funny comics and what's most of the living cast up to after Light's death.

Fallen Hero: Sidestep 1?

Not sure how to even start this. I guess basic info and then fun/not fun facts? Here we go! Also if it matters, all my sidesteps are gender queer one way or another. Either trans, non-binary, ect

Name: Nicole Saxon Gender: female she/her Villain Name: Robin Hood Villainous Role: thief Motivation: life Scar: friendless Reason for gala: money Where is she now?: at the ranch with her girlfriend, Julia Ortega.. with both her legs broken. Not everything is great. Nicole is an entire mess, that could be said about all sidesteps but she feels like a mess in particular. Nicole as a villain is a technology thief that steals from villains, saves people, doesn’t kill (yet), gives to charity, and would help a kitten out of a tree for a kid. She desperately misses being a hero. She also desperately misses having friends. Having the friendless scar is rough on Nicole. She knows she’s messed up for feeling the complete lack of connection to other people and misses the feeling of companionship and camaraderie she felt as sidestep. She has such a need to feel it again she will manipulate people to get a connection. Things Nicole is willing to do include but are not limited to: befriending Mortum as the puppet, using her telepathy to make Argent think of her as a friend, and of course risk getting caught as a villain relighting old friendships and old romances. Nicole is so bothered by her scar, so lonely that she is suicidal. But thankfully her.. girlfriend? Yeah we’ll say girlfriend. Is having her go to therapy and Nicole is working through things herself. She hopes that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Her motivation being life doesn’t mean she wants “the good life”. Nicole just wants to live. She “works” and lives at an electronic repair shop with a coworker she likes and gets to help out the rangers every now and then. That’s the life she wants. At least it’s second to her becoming a hero again, but that ship has.. probably sailed. Either way Nicole needs money and a lot of it to keep herself and her loved ones safe.

Fun facts?: Nicole is my sidestep “prime”. On account of her being my first ever play through. Nicole is probably the friendliest of my sidesteps, or at least the least prickly. She also jokes a lot. If there is a teasing or joke response she most likely chooses it. Also, I just remembered she has like 92% empathy if that shows anything. As said before, Nicole is relighting an old romance. With Julia Ortega. They are super sweet together. Though, Nicole is worried that if Ortega would ever find out about her being a regene (which Julia did) or about being a villain (which Julia did not) Julia would abandon her. Nicole’s vice is alcohol. Thanks Ortega… all joking aside Nicole should probably slow down. Nicole’s lowest relationship is Argent at like 68 I think. Due to her high subtle manipulation, Nicole resisted hollowground and was able to “agree” to work for her. Totally not gonna feed information to Ortega. If you’re curious as to why Nicole would do this: Nicole misses being a hero. This might be the closest she will ever get again. Nicole’s handwriting is so bad that before she got a phone as sidestep she left a handwritten note for Ortega. Ortega and the others thought it was written in code. Thinking sidestep was in trouble they searched for her only to find her eating at a diner. Sidestep got a phone shortly after this. Ortega plays the guitar and taught Nicole while she was sidestep. Nicole still plays a little to relax. I can’t think of anything else right now, so let’s end it with appearance and stat stuff? If you care to read: Nicole prefers anonymity to an extent. About 60%-65%. Very much prefers empathy as stated before at about 92%. And is very cautious at 80%ish. She also prefers subtle manipulation, sitting at about an 82. Nicole’s appearance: Race: white, lots of freckles. Height: short. I imagine she is maybe 5ft (1.5m) Hair: curly red hair put into a thick braid over her shoulder. Shut up, it’s aesthetic. Eyes: green.. they used to be blue but then the Void happened. Style: fashionable preppy with lots of piercings. I imagine her wearing lots of skirts with guards and tights with sweaters. Almost a fashionable librarian look.
