F1 Tag Game!!!! 🏎️🏎️💨
didn’t get tagged for this, but it looked like fun!
tagging @theory81 @twinkodium @wanderingblindly @nyoomfruits @eyes-likepilotlights @pastryland @lattesqueeze and @theommin if they’d like to play as well! (no pressure and sorry for double tags!)
1. Who or what got you into F1?
My boyfriend’s family actually! They would watch races on sundays and i wanted to be able to be part of the conversations they would have; so I watched DTS (i know i know 😔) but that’s where it began and now i’m more into the sport than they ever were! 😅
2. Who was the very first F1 driver you supported? Do you support them now? Have your opinions on them differed or stayed the same since then?
unconsciously max (my first race was abu dhabi ‘21 and bf’s family was split on max vs. lewis) i liked max’s spunk :) but consciously sharl because he was such a cutie with a sad backstory 🫣
3. Who’s your current favourite F1 driver?
oscar!
but close runner ups’ include sharl, max, lando and alex :)
4. Is there a driver pairing or pairings you support? What made you attracted to that pairing in the first place?
i have read well over 1 million words of lestappen fic so that’s a safe bet for sure,, but i’m catching up at about a half million for landoscar :) just love the dynamics of both!
5. Do your parents, siblings or relatives have a favourite team and/or favourite driver(s)?
boyfriend loves the mctwinks (like he should)
my mother absolutely adores max. she would put him in her pocket if she could.
6. Do you have any favourite races? Are there any that stand out to you the most?
qatar sprint and race, singapore, and suzuka (all from this year!)
7. Do you have a favourite circuit? Can be from the past or from the current calendar.
monaco and suzuka
8. Have you ever been to an F1 race in real life? Feel free to tell us your experience going to one if you like.
nooooo i wish 😭😭 maybe montreal or cota one day!!!
9. Have you ever met an F1 driver in real life?
if i met a driver it would be like meeting the lord face to face and i would simply perish on the spot i believe
10. Do you have a favourite F1 car? If so, what is it?
hmm not really but the RB19 fucks fr fr
11. Do you have a favourite one win wonder?
honestly pierre’s maiden win at monza was just so emotional to watch, especially the podium celebration. it was literally as if he was feeling the weight of the world fall off of his shoulders because he proved his worth and proved that he had the right to be there after a lifetime of dreaming 🥹🥹
12. Do you have any favourite quotes from the F1 world? This can either be inspirational or hilarious.
he does not foksmash my door
you can feel how he is really giving himself to the flute
change your fucking car
lando we can be world champion i said

I saw your tags on that Dream neg post and I just wanted to honestly ask if you’ve ever branched out into Dtblr or anything. Because OP very badly misrepresents Dream in that post. He himself acknowledged he was baby raging and clarified a million times no one should be sending hate and very clearly explained why he disagreed with the decision. As well Dream was trying not to be super negative but explained he gets very fixated on things and can’t let them go like he wishes he could which is of course apart of adhd. I don’t want to make you like Dream. But food for though
Yes I have seen a bit of Dtblr and honestly I think y'all are pretty chill for the few I've seen. Or at the very least, more pleasant than twitter could ever hope to be lol. And to clarify, I have no problem with people liking the ccs that are of the Dream Team. As for Dream, well.
It's just that after looking at various controversies that have popped up, looking at the way he handles his audience and his general attitude, just...
Yeah I can't like him, anymore. No matter how many times he could try to give his meager apologies to fix problems that he continuously contribute to. No matter whatever reasons that could be made. I have just found myself feeling increasingly disdainful towards Dream. I don't like him, maybe part of it's irrational. Perhaps I have been exposed to the more negative depictions of his persona, which have influenced my perception of him. Yeah maybe.
But mostly I just don't like some of the decisions (or lack of) that have contributed to the environment he has fostered in his fanbase. I don't like how he keeps giving excuses, and next time it happens again, nothing changed. And it keeps happening.
All of it just leaves a bad taste whenever I think about it. I feel exhausted interacting with anything related to him.
But, look if it's any consolation, I don't think Dream is the worst person to ever exist. Maybe a low bar on my part, but yeah I understand he is a flawed human being and yes he is allowed to feel angry and feel things. I used to actually like him and his content, he brought a little joy in my life like my other favorite ccs. And not all the things he has done are horrible, some of it has been good and uplifting to others. He is friends with many of the other members of the Dream SMP, they would know him better having spent time with him. And I trust their judgment.
Well I would hope so at least.
And as for the post you refer to, sorry but I can't find it in myself to disagree with them, for the most part. Outside of MCC discourse, I can tolerate the man if he stumbles into my dash, he is doing his thing. After all I barely, if ever, interact with DT content and their fanbase. But just... he brings an ugly side to what is supposed to be a fun event and I can't help but feel a lot of issues relating to Dream (and to some extension Sapnap), not just his fanbase, keep getting deflected or ignored when they need to be address.
I dunno maybe I'm wrong, but that's just what I ended up at after many, many months of doubt and consideration. And just, yeah.
===
(I also would like to clarify this is not an invitation to argue or debate with me, not in the mood to do so, not now or ever. So please leave this as it is, but I do hope you have a decent day at least!)

En Garde! Kate Bishop | Kate Bishop x GN Reader
Tumblr media
The rivalry with Kate Bishop began when the two of you were just ten years old. You could recall the exact moment in the back of the art room where it started to form, a tiny thorn that ground against your ribs with each breath, each look, and each stupid smug completion of a task.
The room was hot that day, primary colors catching the sun. The instructor, Miss Garcia, had slathered tissue paper in paint and pushed the saturated material against the glass. It looked stained like it belonged in a church instead of a Grade Five classroom. It was pottery day, something equally messy and satisfying.
You had created a masterpiece, a long vase that stretched towards the painted ceiling tiles. It was glazed and placed in the kiln to harden without incident. But a day later, it had been shattered into a million pieces at Kate’s hands. She had regarded you incredulously and shrugged. That was the day that you knew you hated Kate Bishop.
From then on, the rivalry strengthened its chords. You were smart in school, nearly perfect. Nearly. It was easy to come in second to her in gymnastics, in archery, and choir. She strived to be perfect- pulling the spot of Valedictorian by the end of high school, you, of course, achieved Salutatorian. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride.
Unless it was fencing.
Kate Bishop was good. She would move fluidly behind the black mesh mask. The saber would cut through the air like butter, and she calculated every move with a quick response. But you were quicker, you had more intention behind your thrusts, and would hit her right where it hurt. The foible bent under the pressure and coach Ashley would blow her whistle and the match would end.
It filled with a certain type of pride, watching Kate remove her combat mask cheeks pink with exhaustion, hair frayed and sweat-soaked. She would shake your hand with civil intent, though you could feel the annoyance in her grip. All these years, she had never been known to beat you.
You had graduated with your photo hanging next to a plague in the trophy case. Of course, Kate had the seven other spots, but that didn’t’ matter. You had graduated with something that she didn't have. You went to college at night and worked at your mother’s bakery during the day, stopping at the local fencing gym every afternoon between occasions to teach classes. And thankfully- you had forgotten all about Kate Bishop.
Until she walked into the fencing gym.
You had been leaning against the railing of the upper floor, eyes on the blue mats as children between the ages of six and twelve sparred with one another. Your breath caught when she walked through the door, stopping with Cassie at the front desk, a duffel bag slung over her shoulder.
“Have you heard a single word I’ve said to you?” Teddy asked, toying with the metal whistle around his throat. He had yet to blow it.
“Huh? Yeah. Yes. I’m sorry.”
“What did I say, then?”
You blinked and looked at him. If there was a soundtrack that rushed through your brain right now it had switched to the ample sound of crickets. So, you smile sheepishly and gave him an innocent shrug. He had been having trouble with his partner lately. Billy was entirely wrapped up in a new endeavor that pulled him further and further away. Really- you should have been listening, but Kate Bishop had just walked into your safe space. The Kate Bishop.
Teddy pulled you from your thoughts again, blowing the whistle loud enough to make your ears ring. “Hey! Hector! You cannot use your hands. Take them off Victoria’s throat right now!”
You let out a small sigh and squeezed the bridge of your nose between your fingers. The commotion had attracted a certain grey stare that you weren’t necessarily trying to avoid but weren’t entirely fond of it either. Kate had caught you, and all you did was muster a meager wave with an embarrassing half-smile.
She had come into herself since the last time the two of you had seen one another at graduation. It had been a full three years and you both had matured into adults. She had a soft curve to her jaw and a small, bruised pattern above her left eyebrow, a split close to her lip.
Didn’t her mother run a security company? You had gone to private school on a scholarship, pure goodwill from your parents. But Kate was one of the ones who had the funds to attend, who didn’t’ need to show off the way she did but still pushed it as far as she could anyway.
It was nearing the end of class; you descended the metal stairs from the walkway and moved across the mat. “Hector, hands to yourself.”
The little man huffed, pulling off his mask “It’s easier this way!”
“But those aren’t the rules, Hector.” You knelt down on the bouncy blue mat, pulling at the buttons of his jacket. It took more time to close out the session than they actually got sparring. Wrangling a bunch of kids and giving them metal pointy sticks never worked in anyone’s favor. “No biting, either.”
He groaned dramatically but let you unclip his plastron and pass both off to Teddy. You could feel Kate’s stare on you as she filled out registration paperwork, sharing in small talk with Cassie as the parents arrived to collect their children.
“Y/n, Caroline’s mom called again, she wants to confirm that you got her email” Cassie smiled at you sweetly as you rounded the counter, she handed you a sticky note with the information neatly written on it. Kate lifted her gaze from the paper she was focusing on.
“I got all seventeen of her emails, yes.”
“And clearly have not responded to a single one.”
“Yeah, well. There’s only so many times you can hear about a kid’s dietary needs. No dairy. I’ve got it down pat.”
“Well,” The blonde lifted a perfectly sculpted eyebrow “can you handle watching the phones while I take lunch?”
You nodded, your mouth going dry. It wouldn't be hard, answer the questions about the gyms hours, and what type of services they offered, and be left alone with Kate Bishop because there was no hint of tension. Yeah- you’d keep telling yourself that.
The receptionist mocked a salute before grasping her bag and exiting through the front doors. You grabbed your water bottle and took three long gulps, Kate putting her pen down and sliding it across the countertop. “So, you work here now?”
“I do it for the children,” you used the edge of your thumb to wipe away a droplet of water.
“That’s very noble of you y/n. You vanished after high school. I figured something had happened.”
“Like… murder?”
“Or California. You were looking at Stanford, right?” She smiled softly.
There was no malice there, not like the last time the two of you had stumbled upon one another. Something told you that the second you got a fencing foil into your grasp that same competitiveness would ebb back. You hadn’t expected her to remember a detail so small, a college that had been in the running before your mother had fallen ill.
“Looking is the keyword. I decided to stick around the city. There’s nothing like home, I suppose. What about you?”
She drew in a breath through her teeth “There was an… incident. I was attending Spence but a clocktower may have denigrated under my watch.”
You had read about that; the large structure had crumbled after ringing a few times. The unnamed girl was found on the roof with a duffel bag, a bow and arrow, and an innocent smile, the same one that she was wearing now.
“I’m home for a little bit, is all. I couldn’t really sit still so I heard about this place and thought it would be good to get out for a bit.”
The gym was a good a place as any. You pulled the registration from her and in turn, moved a keycard towards her, its deep yellow exterior catching the overhead lights. Your shoulders weren’t as raised, and the tension had subsided a bit.
“I feel like I’m going to regret this,” You started to shuffle through the business cards on the table, words laced with a sigh “But we had one of our instructors quit. High school level. If it’s something you want to do,”
She cautiously took the card from you, a bit of a spark in her slate eyes. It had been wearing you ragged, instructing both courses in between taking your own. You hadn’t anticipated running into Kate Bishop, nor did you anticipate offering her a position here.
“Ah,” She flipped the business card over, glowering above the cardstock “You want me to kick your ass on a higher level this time?”
“Please. Don’t forget who top rank four years in a row was.” You scoffed, “If anyone is going to kick ass, it’s me. But, if you’re too embarrassed you can always back out now.”
“If you’re so sure of yourself, why not give it a go now?”
You considered this, chewing the inside of your lip until a metallic taste splayed against your tongue. She had a playful glint to her eyes, a strong set to her jaw. Teddy watched the two of you from across the room, absently folding the jackets that had been worn.
It nagged at you, that feeling deep down that made you still want to beat her after all these years. But there was something else there, a longing for the sound of metal against metal, her breath hot against your ear, the way she sprung forward with such intent. A real challenge, something you hadn’t faced.
Finally, you said “En Garde, Kate Bishop.”

CHAPTER 2
[special dt @bluewingedangel <3]
Your neighbors, Nathan and Elena, have been friends with your parents for years. Whether it’d be family gatherings or vacations, they were around; they were family. But when you return home from your final years of college, what will happen when you find that it isn't just them living in the house next door anymore?
_____________________________________
The afternoon sun brought in a relaxing mixture of natural light from the windows, but I wasn’t even remotely focused on it.
My right leg was bouncing hastily under the kitchen table while I prodded my salad with a fork. I tossed a particularly small carrot around in the bowl, swirling it around the sea of other vegetables.
“Are you gonna eat that or play around with it sweetie?” The sound of my mothers voice raced right through one ear and out the other one.
I only sighed in response, and leaned the side of my head on my hand, not bothering to look up at either of my parents that sat across from me.
They urged me to consistently have family meals with them today, in an attempt to dine on the experiences I had away at college. If they’d asked me to do this at any other time, I wouldn’t mind.
But my head was clouded by something else; or should I say by someone else.
Last night refused to escape my line of thinking. Even after it all went down, I went back to bed to try and fall back asleep, but it was absolutely no use.
The cunning quirk of his lips as he smirked back at me was an image that glued itself to the front of my brain. I reeled around in bed until sunrise, unable to silence my thoughts regardless of any persistence. So as of now, I was beyond exhausted.
“y/n? Are you alright?”
I jump faintly in my chair, with my fathers words pulling me away from my cogitation of the man from the pool, “I’m um.. I’m fine, sorry.”
I gave them a toothless smile as reassurance, but by the exchange of looks they both gave each other, they didn’t seem too convinced.
I shifted uncomfortably, and stabbed the carrot I was messing with. I slowly bring it towards my mouth, finally having the compulsion to take a bite.
Until the man’s wink decided to project in front of me, as if I was experiencing the whole ordeal all over again.
I abruptly dropped the fork into the bowl, resulting in a reverberating clash that not only startled my parents, but it startled me back into reality again.
“Jesus y/n, what’s gotten into you?”
I’m asking that same question, mom.
“Nothing, I uh- think I’m just tired,” the excuse flew out of my mouth in a panic, “I’m just.. I’m gonna go shower for the party later.”
I hurriedly sprung from my seat, and scurried up the stairs to the bathroom.
“Well that was smooth, dumbass,” I muttered out in the open, while slamming the door behind me.
That son of a bitch is driving me crazy, and I haven’t even had a single conversation with him.
I take a few steps into the bathroom, placing both of my hands on opposite sides of the sink, leaning over with my body weight. With my head bowed down to the direction of my feet, I suspired deeply.
This was stupid. The brief interaction was embarrassing, yes, but with how I reacted today during lunch, especially when the party was happening later on today..
I just needed to stop thinking about what happened last night.
Act like it didn’t happen.
It didn’t happen.
____________
Turmoil carried on in the form of muffled conversations, and distinct bass from the speakers on the lower levels of the house. Even being upstairs in my room, the walls weren’t thick enough to block the noise that derived from the party.
Of course, my dad’s annual excuse backfired, and instead of the party being fairly small, it was as big as the rest of the parties we've had in the past. Although I really shouldn’t be surprised, knowing this really has carried on for 10 years at most.
As of now, I could only assume that the booze was already out for everyone, and by the end of the night, I could guarantee that almost half the people here will be drunk. It reassured me though, especially when I’ll probably end up being one of those people.
I could use a little alcohol in my system; to let myself go a little bit.
While fixing the straps of my white sundress, I looked at myself in the mirror, making sure any scraps of exhaustion were not visible on my features. Despite longing for a few hours of rest, I knew for a fact that I wasn’t going to get much yet again.
With satisfaction, I back away from my vanity, and start for the door that barricaded me from the chaos.
The exchanges of laughter became much more pronounced as I slowly opened the door, and traveled down the hall. My feet carried me towards the stairs, shaking from the rumble of the speakers seeping through the walls and floors.
It was a blessing that the noise didn’t affect our neighbors enough for them to make complaints; but that was mostly because they were all here.
With each step down the flight, more of the party overtook my vision. Guests were dispersed amongst every room as far as I could see, gathering around each other in hopes of starting conversation over the music. It had been fairly crowded to say the least.
Immediately after I make it to the ground floor, I’m bombarded by my mother.
“Hey honey, Nathan and Elena are outside if you want to say hello to them!” her slightly raising her voice didn't really help much, with us being right next to the speakers. But I nodded letting her know I understood.
Turning away from her, I then faced the crowd of people in front of me. I start to weave my way through, making slight pauses along the way to thank them for coming. Most of the people around me had a slight stench of beer already, making me scrunch my nose; that smell is definitely going to linger afterwards.
Eventually making it to the door, I slide it open and step out, letting the freshness of the outside air fill my senses. I quickly noticed the difference between the outdoors and the impeded aura from inside the house. It felt like I was finally able to breathe.
After shutting the sliding door behind me, I strolled away towards the yard.
I made sure to make a slight detour to the cooler to grab myself a beer though, rashly cracking it open as soon as I got my hands on one. I take a swig while observing the guests around me.
As soon as I saw a familiar head of blonde hair a few yards away, I could feel myself smile widely. I hadn’t seen Nate or Elena in four years, and being back home now is making me realize how much I missed them.
The both of them had moved into the neighborhood about a year after my family, and that was over 15 years ago. Ever since then, they hit it off more than you could imagine.
They had all gotten so close to one another, that they’d have annual dinners together, game nights and tag along on all of our family trips. They would even bring in their ideal vacation spots up to us, which evolved into us traveling to entirely different countries most of the time.
While Elena and my mom went to any beach they could find, and my dad found the bar, Nathan really wanted to drag me along to the historical landmarks and teach me about everything he knew. It made our relationship blossom, and now I considered him my second father.
Plus, because of him I began to develop an endless love for history.
I liked it so much that I made the decision to go to college for it. Nathan’s reaction when I told him before I left was something for the cover of a photo album, and I just knew already that a million questions were going to arise when I got to them.
I stepped down from the deck, and walked towards them with my lips still curled in a smile.
As I made it closer to them though, my gaze became hazy. With my brows contorting, my confused demeanor became more visible with every footstep I made closer to Nate and Elena.
There was another man wrapped into their conversation. He was taller than the other two, especially Elena. I noticed his hair slicked back ruggedly, from above the others’ heads. Though, I still couldn’t get a proper look at his face yet.
I turned my direction slightly to discreetly see who my neighbors were conversing with. My curious nature was overriding my body.
I should have just listened to that universally cliche phrase.
Curiosity did kill the fucking cat, and I wish it would just kill me now.
From here, I had a clear view of his face. He stood there listening to Nate’s banter, with a cigarette wedged between his lips.
The lips I had been staring at the night before, along with the rest of him.
Shit shit shit shit shit.
By this point I would’ve  been repeating my annual habit of staring in place. But  fortunately, I turned on my heal sharply to try and escape.
“Oh my god y/n?” My breath hitched while Elena's voice rang out towards me.
Well great.
I held that particular breath in as I turned my body once more to face her. My warm smile returned to my face, but a layer of embarrassment and panic riddled beneath the surface.
“Elena, it’s so good to see you,” I went over and wrapped my arms around her carefully, keeping her baby bump in mind, “I’ve missed you so much.”
“I’ve missed you too,” she returned the hug, leaning close to my ear, mumbling, “especially when I’ve had to deal with him all alone. I swear sometimes I really question whether the pregnancy hormones are hitting me or him harder.”
I look over at Nate for a quick second, stifling a laugh while I let go of Elena. The two of us continued laughing faintly, certainly gaining the attention of Nate.
“What are you two laughing about? What’d I do this time?” Nate looked genuinely perplexed, which made it funnier.
“Oh nothing, Nate,” Elena and I looked at each other, smirking as she spoke.
Even with Elena and I’s pleasant interaction, that uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach just wouldn’t quit. I just knew he was watching my every move.
Especially, when in the corner of my eye, I watched his travel with me as I went to give Nate his hug.
“It’s good to have you back, Crash.”
Hearing the nickname took me away from my thoughts on the man behind me for a moment, and made my smile lift.
“It’s been too long, Aku.”
We stayed this way for a few more seconds, until I feel him pat my back. I let my arms fall away from him, and return to my spot in front of them.
I then feel my head slowly turn over to the unknown one of the three; well to me he was unknown.
“So who’s this?” I cross my arms in front of me, anticipating an answer from one of them.
But silence continued to radiate around us.
They all stood there, exchanging looks with one another, making me raise one of my brows. While awaiting a response I decided to take a long sip of my beer, feeling the cold liquid slide down my throat.
That is, before Nate finally spoke up, “Y/n, this is Sam,” he paused, and I could see the hesitation written all over him, “Sam Drake.”
I almost choked on my beer as soon as I heard the last name. I thought for a solid minute that my eyes were going to fall out of their sockets.
“Is this your-” I pointed between the both of them.
“He’s my older brother.” Nate finishes my sentence, as he scratched at the back of his neck.
My face fell even more if it was even possible.
Wait.
Nate was in his early forties to begin with, so that would make Sam…
I looked at Sam’s face intensely again, specifically at the wrinkles that were tainted across his face. Now that my brain was functioning properly, unlike last night, I noticed how many there really were.
Great. Not only was I checking out Nathan’s BROTHER, but the man that was more than twice my age.
Fuck.

New on Sports Illustrated: COVID-19 Is Having an Impact on the Market for Veteran Contract Extensions
While Jamal Adams and Dak Prescott in the news, it's worth noting that uncertainty over the salary cap is clogging up the market. Plus, notes on Day 1 of the NFL's Quarterback Coaching Summit.
It’s Monday afternoon, let’s go …
• With Jamal Adams’s contract situation in the news, it’s certainly worth looking into how slow the pace of veteran extensions has been in general this offseason. Digging through it, I could find just three examples of guys getting big-time extensions with years left on their deals since America went into lockdown, without a trade being part of it (DeForest Buckner and Darius Slay got paid as part of trades). One was Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey, another was Texans OT Laremy Tunsil and a third was Bills S Jordan Poyer (whose deal was done before things went really crazy). Meanwhile, contract-year stars like Joey Bosa, Jalen Ramsey, Ronnie Stanley, Ryan Kelly, Alvin Kamara, Dalvin Cook, Chris Godwin, George Kittle, Keenan Allen, Patrick Peterson, Von Miller, and, yes, Adams are waiting for theirs. So the natural question: Is this COVID-related? And the answer is yes. The looming revenue shortfall doesn’t just make cash an issue for some teams, it also makes projecting the cap a problem. If there are big losses in 2020, that means the league and union will have to borrow from future years to keep the 2021 cap level to this year, which could mean ramifications reaching into 2022 and ’23. You may remember back in 2010 and early ’11, teams were hesitant do long-term deals for guys because of salary cap uncertainty. Same thing, to a degree, this year. Which might mean a lot of guys waiting a while for deals. And that could add an interesting twist to the seasons of some teams.
• And that brings us to Dak Prescott, and how the uncertainty over the cap might make it tough to project how a deal at $40 million per season will be accounted for in the coming years. Let’s say he does a deal with flat cap numbers. And let’s say, absent the pandemic, the cap was going to be around $270 million in 2023, which may be conservative based on the expected influx of TV and broadcast money. Under those conditions, Prescott’s deal, then in its fourth year, would account for 14.8% of Dallas’s cap. Now, let’s say, the coronavirus impact knocks the cap number in 2023 down to $220 million. In that case, Prescott’s deal is accounting for 18.2% of the team’s cap. That’s a pretty massive difference, when you consider this is one of 53 contracts. And it doesn’t mean the Joneses won’t get Prescott done. But it does explain why it could complicate things for him, and the other 13 guys who are currently franchised.
• Speaking of that, Prescott became the ninth franchised player (and 10th tagged player, if you count Cardinals transitioned RB Kenyan Drake) to sign his tender. That leaves five guys unsigned in the group: Bucs OLB Shaq Barrett, Bengals WR A.J. Green, Chiefs DT Chris Jones, Jaguars DE Yannick Ngaukoe and Broncos S Justin Simmons. All the tagged guys have until July 15 to do deals. So what’s the difference for these five? They can wait until Week 1 to sign, if they’d like, without losing a dime, because they’re not under contract.
• I really enjoyed Day 1 of the NFL Quarterback Coaching Summit (a joint venture by the Black College Football Hall of the Fame and the NFL), which I wrote about in last week’s GamePlan, so here are some good tidbits. Titans coach Mike Vrabel was the first speaker, and he dove into his philosophy on leadership (“We will treat you the same as you treat the team”), and how to interview (he passed out iPads on his interviews, rather the traditional “book” that coaches keep) before explaining keys in assembling a staff. I thought maybe the most interesting part was how he said having diversity of race and background on hand was important, to give a staff the best chance of reaching every individual player on the roster. Also, he mentioned how it was important to support the ambitions of assistants, and that losing them to promotion “means you’re hiring the right people,” and he listed the trainer with the GM and owner among the most important relationships a head coach has. There was also this, on the idea of culture: “When you’re winning, culture is easy. … Culture is what you look like at the worst moment. I hope everyone has a good culture at 7-1, but what does it look like at 2-5?”
• Also great was a panel hosted by my buddy Steve Wyche of NFL Network, one that included Steelers owner Art Rooney II, Giants owner John Mara, former Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, Bucs coach Bruce Arians and Texans limited partner Javier Loya. Both owners acknowledged the trend toward offensive coaches, and it was interesting to hear Mara admit that he’d fallen victim to those sorts of things in the past. “A lot of us have fallen into that trap, looking at the Sean McVay, the Kyle Shanahan, and you think you’re just going to get the next one,” Mara said. “I look at the head coach now as more of a CEO. I don’t care if he’s an offensive play-caller or a defensive play-caller.” Rooney echoed the point, saying that looking at the Steelers’ stability, from Chuck Noll to Bill Cowher and now to Mike Tomlin, there has been a common thread. “The most important thing all three of them had in common, they’re all great communicators,” Rooney said. “If there was one thing we were always looking for in a head coach, it would be that.” Rooney also advocated for finding a way to slow down the process of coach hiring (it’s how he found Tomlin, even with legit candidates in house), though he added that he understood how competition for guys makes that idea difficult to implement.
• Arians, for his part, was passionate on the call. He said doing your job well, whatever that job might be at the moment, should come first, because that’s how you build respect among your peers. “Respect among your peers is the most important thing,” he continued. “I had respect among my peers, I didn’t give a damn if I got a job.” So what difference can that respect make? Arians recalled telling anyone who’d listen, on Vic Fangio, “If he’s not at the top of your list, you’re missing the boat.” Arians also pointed out how his very diverse staff is made up of a lot of guys he identified as potential coaches when he had them as players, which is something he hopes coaches get more aggressive doing. “These guys all played for me, so I had a long pool of guys I worked with,” Arians said. “You don’t hire strangers in my office, you hire guys I trust.”
• Another point of discussion was how narratives (i.e. hot candidates) can drive coaching searches. That’s where Newsome jumped in, explaining that the Ravens always keep lists of coaches of interest. “We create our own lists,” Newsome said. “We come to a collective agreement on the people we want to interview, and that’s based on the information we get when we talk to our area scouts, and our coaches and people around the league.” That, he mentioned, is how they found an Eagles special teams coach to be particularly intriguing. John Harbaugh’s been a pretty good hire.
• Sorry to sink the whole column into this—but it really was a pretty awesome deal, and there’s more coming Tuesday. Among the other parts of Monday’s festivities: Ex-Browns coach Hue Jackson with a detailed breakdown on the first 30 days on the job for a head coach; Saints assistant D.J. Williams on being a quality control coach; Stanford OC Tavita Pritchard on QB drill work; and Maryland OC Scottie Montgormery and Bucs OC Byron Leftwich on staff/coordinator dynamics. (I’ll try and get you some more info Tuesday on Twitter.)
• One thing from Falcons coach Dan Quinn, left over from this morning’s column, that I found particularly fascinating: He’s going to build all the possibilities he can think of for the fall of 2020 into his training camp schedule, and that means all of them. “What I do know is the teams that adjust the best are gonna be the ones that preform the best. Because what we’ve all seen is there’s been a lot of moving parts and things have changed, so there’s gonna be change during the season—players out due to COVID and all that,” Quinn said. “So during camp, when we do get together, we’ll have time where, and I’ll do it for myself first, OK, I’m out, or the playcaller’s out, where we keep showing them, here’s where adjustments have to take place, and we’re able to hit them, so we have contingency plans.” Pretty smart thinking there, and it’s not exactly hard to conjure a scenario where such a contingency plan might have to be enacted.
• The NFL re-opened its New York office on Monday. So if you want some good news on where all this is headed, there’s some for you. And, by the way, the Raiders opened their facility in Nevada, too, which means they’ve officially left California after spending their first 60 seasons in the nation’s most populous state.
