me in my feelings about trek fandom:
so, that star trek confessional blog that's been going around the last few days? and the mini discourse about possible rage-bait on it? and then the new rule that they won't post anything that feels like it's attacking a specific subgroup of fandom? That whole thing?
Cursed discourse. Rotted, rancid, stupid shit. And not even the top five worst discourses I've seen this week.
I actually kind of am mad at a lot of trek fandom and do have a lot of honest opinions that would read as an attack on people...
I guess the thing that has been rising to the top is this phenomenon where people who are clearly intelligent and thoughtful in terms of how they engage with stuff in general end up having bizarre blindspots when it comes to trek.
People who thoroughly acknowledge cultural biases and the ways in which opinons are shaped by bigotry when it comes to talking about how, say, Voyager was received at the time, will turn around and flatly deny the roles of racism, misogyny and transphobia in the reception of Discovery, insisting that "it's bad because grimdark" - which a) isn't even true and b) a cursory glance through the comments on a stream of a disco episode would prove that "grimdark" is not the thing that audiences are mad about. You might have a good faith criticism (which "grimdark" isn't because it's not accurate, but idk some other good faith criticism) but that's not why the show is less beloved than snw or picard s3.
Or people who constantly reblog posts about how episodic "filler episodes" are so great, and how they build the characters and make up the heart of the shows... and then talk about characters and their relationships in ways that only make sense if you cherry pick random disconnected moments from across seven years of television.
Or someone how can talk articulately about fandom culture, stanning, and conspiracy theories, and shows insight and cynicism into phenomena like those sherlock truthers... and then says that garashιr would have been canon if it weren't for ezri, or that it would've been canon if they'd got an eight season. Like, these are ridiculous opinions that basically rely on you not watching the actual show.
Ok technically the last two were just me bitching about a ship that's popular and therefore sometimes the fans can get obnoxious. I shouldn't complain about that... while we're here, I also find spιrk annoying at this point. This is silly, back to snw.
Fundamentally, a lot of snw's popularlity is the same as picard s3: it's nostalgia heavy and the leads are white men. Overall, taking the entire audience in mind, that is a significant part of what's going on.
Now, obviously, snw is a lot better than s3 of picard (which i will die mad about). It's not a bad show, but I do feel that s2 didn't really improve on s1 and perhaps felt weaker at times. I thought the musical episode was genuinely bad and struggle to even believe people when they say they liked it. To be clear: I love musicals, I love musical episodes, I hated this one.
It's shit like this, the insistance that it's amazing when, as a show, it's just fine, sometimes a little bad, mostly pretty good, occasionally very good - it's shit like this that makes people accuse fans of being inauthentic when they praise it. It's claims that snw is "saving nu trek", when no, no it hasn't. Discovery has been prematurely cancelled, Picard ended in disgrace, and Prodigy was cancelled, then rescued but its future past s2 is unclear. It didn't save anything.
It feels like the future of trek is going to be more naval gazing, more nostalgic pandering, more meta references and a distinct lack of new concepts... possibly even a lack of new characters at this rate.
I made this side blog to post about picard s2, because I genuinely had a lot of feelings and thoughts. I felt like, while there was some annoying shit and bad takes around, it was fun to participate and I was enjoying myself. For the last few months, really since snw s2 aired, I've been having a pretty bad time here. So much of it is petty shit that sounds bizarre to type out: small posts and variously tiny infuriating takes. This entire post is stupid and pointless, when I put it like that.
But, yeah, trek fandom has been making me pretty unhappy recently.
I'll still be here and will watch the new disco when it comes out, and hopefully feel something again. I want to be able to re-enter the headspace I was in back when S2 picard aired, and I felt free to just express my opinions without being hyper aware of everyone else's pre-conceived stuff. We all have loaded opinions and strange baggage with trek, it comes with the territory.

Star Trek Bake-Off
What would they be like and how would they do on a show the style of the Great British Bake-Off? Let’s assume they all can bake/cook despite replicators :P
Feel free to add on with your thoughts :D
Joseph Sisko- one of the judges. Gives subtle advice and hugs when people need it.
Jake Sisko- one of the show hosts. Snarky but supportive. (Nog as co-host? They’d be fun together.)
Data- Flawless at the technical stuff. Chooses recipes based on what he knows from studies. Chooses “unusual” stuff based on science says should work, whether its been tested or not. Always finishes a few minutes early and offers to help anyone struggling.
Geordi- Comes in with plans, but is definitely open to being improvisational once he starts. Which usually ends up good.
Riker- Is very “experimental” with his flavors, which is either unexpectedly really good or expectedly really bad. There is no in-between.
Picard- Sticks to French stuff. Not a food snob, but definitely likes his fancy recipes.
Troi- Chocolate in everything she can put it in. Is always the first to comfort another baker, even though a couple times that led to her accidentally leaving something in the oven a little too long.
Worf- Has many good “grandma” type recipes from Eastern Europe and sticks to them to the letter. Protective of family “secret ingredients”. Doesn’t understand why people think he’s cute when he tells little life stories that go along with the recipes.
Sisko- Is very focused once he starts. Loves his Southern US stuff, but up for mixing different things with it. Suspects Judge Joseph and Host Jake might have it out for him.
Miles- The most accident-prone, as in multiple finger bandaids each day. Decent and “average” baker. Tries Japanese recipes occasionally in honor of Keiko, tries being the key word.
Julian- Can sometimes be distracted by shenanigans. Very inventive when things go a little wrong.
Jadzia- Messiest station, barely-controlled chaos. Lacks decoration finesse, but good flavors.
Kira- Does one type of thing and does it very well. Anything else? Not so much.
Ezri- Decent, but needs to work on being flustered easily and her self-confidence.

For the ask meme , what about jadzia ?
favorite thing about them
she’s just. genuinely very enjoyable. like I feel like other characters I have more specific things to say about them but she’s literally just very fun to watch I love her beautiful woman weird guy who is also a worm energy. her swagger her panache her power. all the scenes where she’s doing her professional science job and also just saying some vaguely insane shit are important to me. but then like I also think one of the most interesting things in her character was kind of unintentional as they were trying to sort her out where early jadzia was a lot quieter and more serious and theoretically more like she was before joining and then she just kind of evolves into her final form. like I don’t think that was intentional I think they just kinda went hmm this character isn’t working let’s try something else but I think the idea that sometimes it’s this gradual progression towards a balance (in a different way than it is for ezri later as well) is an interesting one.
least favorite thing about them
it’s too easy to talk about tears of the prophets and the whole like “she’s never mentioned that they want kids before now but since they’re killing her off she is now Woman Who Wants A Baby because i guess her death isn’t tragic enough otherwise, and it feels like cheating to talk about how “if worf hadn’t shown up it would’ve been you” (idr if that’s the exact quote and I refuse to look it up but it’s like that) is a horrendous retcon, but holy shit everything that happened at the end of s6 into s7 was like. it’s just so clearly spiteful?? like I’m not breaking new ground here we all know it but god.
also I do think her willingness to just like throw her life away for some random guy she met two days ago is kind of funny but if I knew her in real life it would drive me insane
brOTP
benjamin!! literally just. I mean she has great dynamics with so many people and some of them didn’t even get ruined in s7 but they’re so important to each other both across lifetimes and as sisko and Jadzia Specifically that they gotta take the top spot
OTP
I do like worfzia a lot when they’re written well (90s trek loved the “a relationship can’t be interesting unless they’re fighting about dumb shit all the time” school of thought, and while some of their arguments made sense bc they had conflicting worldviews and experiences and shit that they should reasonably have to struggle to work out, some of them felt like they were more a feature of this). but also kiradax soooo deeply important to me from like late s1 onward and I simply think. what if they were wifes.
nOTP
sigh ok I’m gonna talk about it but just like. I really liked what the julian and jadzia friendship settled into!! she wasn’t into him and he eventually got over it enough that they could become rly good friends!! and like I’ve said this before but I get if he still had lingering feelings ik that doesn’t always just go away but like. to treat it like it was ever remotely mutual is so disingenuous and a disservice to both characters imo
random headcanon
this is really specific but I like to think she kind of loosely keeps in contact with arjin (the trill initiate she was the field docent for) even if he doesn’t go on to be joined. I think it would be nice if they had a little like pen pal mentorship thing going on every so often yknow.
unpopular opinion
it’s funny I feel like there aren’t a lot of wildly differing opinions on jadzia. like generally speaking pretty much everyone thinks she’s enjoyable? I feel like I have seen people say she’s not the best written character and I don’t think they’re Wrong (and i do feel like to a degree they do more interesting trill stuff with ezri) but it also doesn’t. bother me that much in this case tbh.
song i associate with them
I can’t remember who it was anymore but someone mentioned recessional by vienna teng as a kira/jadzia song but after ezri shows up and it’s.
Tumblr media
yeah…………..
favorite picture of them
Tumblr media
if I don’t talk about rejoined at some point during this I’ll die for real so here it is ⬆️⬆️⬆️ women kiss

I kinda made alot of Rik Mayall characters femme or butch in my head without really meaning to, like a subconcious thing. Alan I invision as futch, Colin is femme. Richard Dangerous is butch
Right? It’s debatable that I could rightfully be called butch at all, really, more of a...confused blob. Nevertheless, I feel such strength and awe when I see, or think of butches, and I feel this kinship. A lot of my favourite media does not really contain any butch women, unfortunately, but they do contain a wealth of gentlemen, whom I can project onto and of who’s looks and energy I am very envious. So, I turn them into butches when it suits me, because I am the master of my little fandom corner. Sometimes you want that bit of comfort, you know? All the better if they’re paired with a femme of any gender.
I often think of the Frog brothers from The Lost Boys as baby butches, still figuring stuff out. Richard Dangerous, for sure. Johnny Cade from The Outsiders. Vance from The Warriors. The list goes on. There are some examples of female characters that are not really butch in the media, at least they weren’t meant to be, but I’m making them. Like, Ezri Dax from Deep Space Nine, or Sarah from Labyrinth. Gosh, I need to find some good butch rep in my media.
And now, Trigger. Maybe it’s a little shallow, but Roger Lloyd Pack’s looks really do something for me. Artistically, he’s a bit of a muse at the moment. He’s both attractive, and enviable. Unconventional, cartoonish, undoubtedly masculine, but with really soft eyes and a gentle voice. Quite beautiful. But the character of Trigger, himself, is just very comforting. I just would like him to be a butch, now and then, as a treat.

ok some star trek liveblogs
- its literally.. it feels like so long since i las t watched trek somehow idk how. i mean its been a while since i could watch it continuously and ive had a rlly long couipleof weeks tbh. but yah now i can probs finish ds9 at some poinnt this week if i rlly want to :3
- and also as like a fun little note. it took me SO SO long to get through tng didnt it christ? like its almost been a whole year since i first watched it, and i thought to myself "man idk if i should wait until my birthday again to do a st movie marathon" but i literally think it could so easily line up ... O_Owhich stupididk how its been tht long already my god.
- anyways i into the final stretch of s7
- and like okie dokie. worf. sigh. soft gentle sighs
- bc heres the thing its so weirddd bc i LOVE worf to the core but its SO funny bc like. i hated a lot of his tng eps- sorrryyy. though frankly thats not even ENTIRELT accurate, as usually not bc of him. i didnt hate worf eps, but a lot of the klingon eps bc the politics really did not do it for me at all.
- and more to the point. i DO feel like hes a little out of place, still, in ds9, even if he has offered some good stuff to the show
- but rn with ezri. sigh.
- bc frankly the thing is. whilst theres some moments that make me cringe and they're too stilted... i actually do like worf for his flaws sometimes. i dotn know. not as in im like ohh yeahh go mister sogynistic.... but in terms of a character i do find it. hm. refreshing is absolutely the wrong word, but i do feel there's more depth when you can allow characters to, like, actually be a little bit of a resistance at times. like genuine resistance
- and idk . but sighhhh sigh sigh. the thing with ezri is i like understand absolutely and i would ALSO feel that way with him not wanting to talk to her rn. like is it stupid ass the way he treated her? yah..... and not right BUT i'd be, like, "fine" with it in the sense of like. it would align with his character and i recognise his own shit is getting in the way and people dont handle/react to things perfectly and like- he did lose his wife, and stuff, and its not like... she owes him her time either like.
- bc like. if HE is not comfortable being friends with (or even talking to) his late wifes successor i dont think thats, like, a weird "hes runniong away; he isnt communicating" situation moment bc like. frankly its kind of obvious... why someone might not want to do that at all. its a unique situation. and GRANTED, yes they do have to work togetrher but like... i think its fiar if he just wants to keep it sort of civil and i dont know . sometimes you can just settle for things being awkward with each other, like? you cant make every situation perfect all of the time- and itsliterally fine, just grit ur teeth... granted i guess thats a very Me way of thinking abt it but like- but-
- BUT GOD SOMETIMES . theres some shit hes doing NOW in particular tht is making me claw my hair out just bc it seems.... AGAIN i want him to react badly if it fits him, but nonetheless ahrgh. WHY DID HE FUCK EZRI. SORRY I
- NOW WHY DID THEY ENGAGE IN INTERCOURSE LIKE THAT HM.
- BECAUSE THAT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME ON ANY LEVEL WHATSOEVER IS THE THING <3
- also the thing with ezri is im sobbing bc ezri soooo could easily be my most favourite of teh entire show but im just so sad she was brought in so fuckn late!!!!! like, im not actually wholly against introducing maincast so far along in THIS circumstance. like after 6 seasons? im ok with that. on the contrary i like it here, even if i dont usually like that kind of thing, bc it makes sense tht they have to change things to keep the show flowing (as u kno how s7 of trek can get a little... burnt out.. at least i felt that way with tng too). so im cool with her being new but its moreso bc we only have one season left.... and thts not enough time. does that make sense.
- bc like maybe if she was brought into s6, and then there were 8 seasons of ds9 i feel like tht could work? but only ONE season for development, esp so late when things are coming to a head...
- rn i feel like they have to rush a lot of her, and focus on her a bit too much and its not as organic as it could be which is such a shame bc its GENUINELY A REALLY INTERESTING FACET of trill culture, and i do find her compelling as hell but YEAH. i think them having to, like, so quickly demonstrate her as a person makes a lot of the execution... lose subtley? which is just like. gentle sigh. its not godawful but its, like, very.... season 1 and 2.
- anyways back to theshwo im really obsessed with damar right now. the absolute definition of some fucking bloke. and i meant what i said abt him and weyoun really feeling like a couple in the midst of a years long divor-
- SORRY.
- "if you think i dont know what youre up to, youre a bigger fool than dukat... 😠" "d..dukat?" "he used to entertain lady friends as well 😒" SO AS I LITERALLY WAS JUST SAYING. JEEZ.
- also god i really do not care for ezri and julian. i doubt anyone does but like i think it goes back to what i said above like
- frankly. i do not think even WITH development it could work (it just feels weird, especially with how they wrote julian and jadzia,) but its even more awkward and stilted with how we've seen... barely nothing of them together. like girlies what...
- i will say though. damar epic big dick moments help. im actually really digging him despite it all. help.
- and fucking- THE FACT WHEN EZRI AND WORF CAME BACK . THEY ALL CROWDED EZRI LIKE <333 WE MISSED YOY. AND W9DGJIDIFODJIOG. WORFWAS JUST 🧍‍♂️ LIKE HELPPP WHY ISTHT MAKING ME PISS AND SHIT AND
- also also also also. sighhhh omg. i get its like the final stretch now and we did get a lot of other character stuff earlier this season but i do hope they give the other girlies sth to do a bit more . im not worried abt it bc i figure we've just been focussing on other stuff rn but yah
- thats right sisko. malewife. you wear the apron.
- can i say i love kasidy's voice. like idk if its her accent or sth? but its just got that softness round the edges, my goodness me...
- i will say im squinting at the whole... her leading him down the wrong path. like what does it even mean, bestie. i know im not supposed to know yet. but goodness gracious me. i have a sense of foreboding- and NOT the one im meant to... like as in i feel like theyre going down a bad route narratively
- kai winns . whats his name. her assistant? fucking HATING dukat is fucking hysterical. he just smells it on him.
- WHAT A TIRESOME LITTLE MAN
- I AM BUT A MOON MADE WA- OHHHHH IM GOING TO BARF. DUKAT YOU ARE GROWING SO INSUFFERABLE. SOMEHOW MORE AND MORE SO.
- the fact she REALLY IS SICK AND TWISTED ON THAT NASTY DUKAT DICK. DEMENTED, TORMENTED, NOT EVEN SACRAMENTED
- the ezri and julian mess. even if i dislike it i do like worf just taking the piss out of him. get his ass. hes a child. sure. be a little mean its quite funny
- also damar and weyouns nasty little wretched dynamic.extremely fuckinh funny behaviour on all fronts. oh the girls HATE each other dont they ust. can you imagine being the fucking breen.
- no offence benjamin but shes so right fucking GETR HIS ASS, KASIDY.
-quark why are you taunting odo about his relationship with kira now hm.
- anywaysmy comments are getting inane i'll dump this big one at this point i think and continue whenever i have more to chatter about

seven/ezri + 23
23. Submission
This is set at the Academy in a post-canon near future where they’ve met while both taking elective classes in order to access the command track (Ezri) and to become a Starfleet officer (Seven). (Also despite the prompt this is very much G-rated lol)
***
2378
Seven was sitting rigidly on the bench they shared, eyes downcast.
“I have felt the— compulsion to surrender, in the past.”
Ezri was glad that they’d found a quiet corner of the Academy gardens for this conversation. She wouldn’t have been able to parse Seven’s reticence with the noise of the cadets enjoying the sunny weather in the background.
“You don’t mean to the Borg,” Ezri guessed.
“I do not.” She paused. “But I find myself currently wishing for a Borg neural link. It would be a more efficient way to share my predicament.”
“I thought we both disliked having too many voices inside our head.”
A few months ago Ezri would've found confusion or irritation on Seven’s face, but lately she’d been more receptive to her silly jokes. She was pretty sure Seven actually found this one funny.
“You have a point, Lieutenant,” Seven conceded. She inhaled sharply, fingers curling on the fabric of her uniform pants. “At times I want to relinquish control. To surrender to my basest instincts. The demands of being an individual and those of living in human society are too contradictory. I cannot make sense of them.”
With anyone else Ezri would’ve thought that the conversation had taken a sudden turn, but this was the nature of her acquaintance with Seven. It had been awkward, at first, to try to make small talk; realizing that they could skip that part entirely and just say what was on their mind had been a relief for both of them, and the beginning of their friendship.
“That’s the question. How do you do personhood without going crazy?” Ezri said, in a sing-song voice.
Seven turned towards her sharply, and Ezri cringed.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t making fun of you— just of myself. I meant to say that it’s something I can relate to. Sometimes I can’t tell if I’m doing a good job at being a person. I usually just pretend very hard that I’m Ezri and not nine personalities in a trench coat.” Ezri paused, realizing she was gesticulating. She tucked her hands under her thighs. “The point has escaped me a bit but what I wanted to say is, this stuff is hard work, and I often think about giving up despite all the progress I’ve made. I think these thoughts you’re having are understandable for someone with your experiences.”
Seven nodded, acknowledging Ezri’s rant. Ezri let her take her time to mull it over and closed her eyes, taking in the warmth of the afternoon. A breeze was coming from the Bay, rustling the ginkgo leaves above them.
“It is remarkable.”
“What is?” Ezri asked, opening one eye.
“Submitting my thoughts to you, and you reflecting them back to me with your own insight. My unique experiences do not make me an isolated being.”
Ezri grinned. “Does this help with the contradiction?”
“More data is required,” Seven replied, the corners of her mouth twitching. “But preliminary results are promising.”
Ezri only laughed in response.

ds9 and wolf 359
thanks for the ask! :) from this
DS9
Favorite character: Kira Nerys
Second favorite character: Jadzia Dax
Least favorite character: Dukat
The character I’m most like: idk i feel like it’s probably ezri?
Favorite pairing: Kiradax
Least favorite pairing: i mean i don’t know how much to express how bad kira/dukat would’ve been, garak/ziyal…. ok look theres a lot of bad choices made in terms of star trek romance
Favorite moment: why is my gut reaction “allamaraine” there’s a lot of good moments… like the dramatic, deep part of me wants to say the “you cannot destroy an idea” bit at the end of far beyond the stars, and the gay part of me wants to say “rejoined” or any number of gay kiradax scenes, and the i love stupid funny stuff wants to say “you make your own luck, we all know that *falls*” and the…..
Rating out of 10: so this is hard for like any trek (and. anything…) bc theres some REALLY GOOD episodes and i love ds9 but theres some REALLY BAD episodes that i hate and theres some forgettable episodes. so, like, there are some solid at least 9/10 episodes, maybe higher. i feel like maybe i should say like 6/10 but i love it so im saying &
Wolf 359
Favorite character: Renee Minkowski
Second favorite character: Isabel Lovelace (ok i also do have to say oh my god i love Hera so much and I have…. a lot of feelings about Maxwell but a lot of those are love, and w359 is a really good example of making a lot of very good characters who i like even though sometimes i want to hit them)
Least favorite character: this is obvious but like… Cutter or Pryce… I mean… yeah… I do think they’re interesting villains but I also hate them
The character I’m most like: so in the other ask i had trouble with the expanse bc i dont really think im like any of them but unfortunately i project a different part of myself onto like all the w359 characters so this is extremely difficult… like, objectively, it’s probably eiffel, maybe, but i also do strongly relate to aspects of minkowski, hera, and maxwell
Favorite pairing: Minkowski/Lovelace
Least favorite pairing: hmm so obviously there’s worse pairings you could make but as far as like, popular ones, i’m not big on Kepler/Jacobi… i get why people ship it but i just don’t like Kepler
Favorite moment: hngggg i have a 18000 word document cataloging favorite w359 moments… like! how am i supposed to answer this! god im bad at this question! like. okay,  i love suffering, so, just to name a few that come to mind, minkowski and lovelace in bolero, hera and maxwell in bolero, the funeral scene in bolero, all of memoria, the deep emotional talk in pan pan, lovelace in desperate measures, all of brave new world
Rating out of 10: fuck it 9/10……………………. could’ve been higher if they made lovelace (and others) canon queer

star trek timelines crafting event tutorial
hello everyone! so timelines is very confusing and doesn’t do a superb job with telling you what to do for events. this is one of the more confusing events to play but it’s my favourite because once you know what to do it’s very easy to grind for!
make sure you have tons of chronitons at your disposal, and it also helps to have completed a lot of levels with 3 stars because it makes it easier when you can warp for items you need instead of having to play the whole level.
Tumblr media
so when you’re on the main screen there should be a purple event bar on the left side, select that and you should see a menu like this. click on “Enter Event” and it will take you to this page
Tumblr media
you should see an array of yellow wrenches (meaning you can build that item, not shown because i already built everything earlier oops) and blue triangles (meaning you’re missing some of the components to build that item). we’re going to ignore the first blue triangle on the left because you accumulate that item as you play through the event, so let’s go to the second one!
Tumblr media
this shows that i’m missing two items for this craft. we’re not going to worry about the menu on the right just yet, we’ll just focus on the items. so, let’s click on the medical tricorder with the red text that says 0/1
Tumblr media
whenever you select an item it shows you a menu with all the missions you can get that item from, i can get the medical tricorder from either one of these space battle levels, so let’s engage!
Tumblr media
if you’ve completed a level with 3 stars before, you should be able to “warp” through it, meaning you don’t have to load and play the whole level, you just automatically get the items. this applies to both ship battles and away missions. if you have a high enough VIP level you can warp up to 10 times at once and get the items from those 10 times instantly. however i don’t have a lot of chronitons at the moment so i’ll do warp 1
Tumblr media
and here’s the stuff! so we’ll do that again for the crystal item i need to craft and we should be good to go.
Tumblr media
to craft an item you have to assign a crew member to help you craft it, every event will have specific trait bonuses to increase your chance at getting the “event item” as a bonus (that first blue triangle we talked about earlier). whenever you go to select crew it automatically shows you the best choices at the top of the list. for this particular item it was buster kincaid but since i have a high leveled waitress ezri dax card it sometimes will show her at the top instead.
you can also apply a shuttle mission boost to increase your chance at getting the bonus item, but i don’t do this super often because sometimes it really doesn’t make a difference, even with the 4 or 5 star shuttle boosts.
Tumblr media
so here’s the first section with all three items completed! it doesn’t really matter which of these levels you do because you basically get the same event points from every one, just do whatever you have the resources for!
Tumblr media
these event points can get you nice rewards such as extra chronitons to keep playing, or event crew! there are community goals (bottom right) that everyone gets access to at the end of the event if the community racks up enough points so even if you don’t have the time or resources to play the event too much you’ll still more than likely get some cool free stuff!

something bad just happened in my personal life, could i get some extra fluffy hcs of sisko being a good dad(tm) to jake and the ds9 crew as a cheer up thing?
Absolutely!
No one understands how they end up going to talk to him if a chat with Ezri didn’t/won’t help/she wasn’t there yet, but when they do they end up feeling so much better
Sometimes when Jake pushes away or just needs his space Ben knows and gives him whatever he needs
When Jake was little, he liked to bring home small animals and while he’d always be more about Jake’s safety, if he found a little frog or something then he wouldn’t say no to keeping it as a little pet
Whenever something really bad happens to anyone, a really deep and caring side comes out of him that’s really rare but really wonderful
He likes to have all of them come to baseball games and stuff, Jake enjoys it the most, but Kira is a close second, and he’d absolutely participate in any holosuite activities they wanted him to try… Within reason.
He cooks for them whenever they’re sad, he makes a note of who likes what (and was excellent at helping Solid!Odo find out what he did and didn’t like and made a special note to give him a little pick-me-up whenever things got heavy)
Of course, when anyone tries to return the favor with anything they want to make him, he’s going to take it and love it with all of his heart even if they’re charcoal cookies or a really messy popsicle stick craft (who even made that anyway) because they’re Creations™ from his beautiful platonic adopted family
(I’m so sorry this took so long too, I hope things got/get better for you!)

jazzypizzaz replied to your post: by the way kira/odo bashir/ezri seven/chakotay and...
hmmmm I think Odo and Chakotay *do* fall into that category sometimes?? but it’s uneven, less so than your other examples. Odo– whenever he’s in a romantic subplot. C – when the sketchy Voyager writers forget he exists and/or bullshit mystical stuff
hm okay good point. it’s also to be fair ymmv for a lot of them - like i actually like tom paris well enough, just. not with b’elanna. now that you frame it like this you’re right, i guess i was thinking more on a conceptual level than an execution level. and i guess if we’re being fair, bashir fits this mold all through season one, just not during jezri. that’s an entirely different different can of worms

I hit 400 followers!!! And now, the ask thing no one asked for!!
lantern - how did you meet your best friend? What were your first impressions of each other? Well, I kind of have a few best friends, and I met almost all of them in band!
frost - if you could give some advice to your younger self, what would you say? To my younger self, and to my younger followers, I would say don’t waste your time trying to figure out what other people want you to be. It’s your life, not theirs and you don’t owe it to them to do what they want you to. So be your best self, however you define that.
maple - is there a hobby / skill that you’ve always wanted to try but never did? I’ve always wanted to ice skate!!! I’m super clumsy though...
harvest - what fictional character do you most identify with? Why? Ezri Dax from DS9. Well, I’m left handed and in love with Julian Bashir, like Ezri, and I guess on a deeper level I tend to feel like I have to constantly please others and I kind of feel like I’m faking my way through school.
fireside - if you had your dream wardrobe, what would it look like? Sweaters, jeans, and boots. Like, functional boots.
cider - a food that you disliked as a child but now enjoy? I hated jalapenos but I started liking them around 7th grade.
amber - share an unpopular opinion that you may have. Angst is overrated. (and Lord of the Rings is better than Game of Thrones)
fog - how well do you think you’d do in a zombie apocalypse scenario? I think physically I’d do fine, but it would mentally and emotionally destroy me.
jack-o-lantern - if you could look like any celebrity, who would you choose? That’s kind of a tough question. I’m not really good looking, but I guess I’m happy with the way I look. Either Zoe Sandala or Emma Watson, I guess.
spice - have you ever encountered a house that you believed to be haunted? My cousins live in a 160 year old house that has a barn that I’m not convinced /isn’t/ haunted.
orchard - share one thing that you’d like to happen this autumn. I live in Texas. I just want cool weather.
crow - which school subject do you wish you had an aptitude for? Umm... I wish I was a little bit better at physics.
bonfire - describe your dream house. I’d really just like a kind of smallish house in Colorado. I guess the dream part of it is that it’d be in Aspen.
cinnamon - if you had to live in a time period different than the present, which would you choose and where? I’d really like to be in Paris in the Romantic era. It’d be fun to learn from the musicians of the time and I like the French style.
cobweb - (if you’ve graduated) do you miss high school? Kind of?? It’s kind of mixed emotions for me. It was a great high school... but it was still high school.
cranberry - what’s one physical feature that you get complimented on? Nothing. Just kidding. Sometimes people say that I have pretty eyes.
maize - share the weirdest encounter you’ve had with a stranger on the street. I’ve had some odd (but usually nice) experiences with strangers in downtown San Antonio. Once we stood in a glass shop for like half an hour because the artist wanted to look at my (art major) sister’s art.  Another time we ate lunch with a random lady because her son didn’t want to go out to eat with her. She gave us some good career advice.
quilt - how do you take your tea (or coffee)? Tea with honey or nothing, coffee with lots of sugary stuff to disguise it.
pumpkin - do you think that humans are inherently good or bad? I think we’re inherently a bit of both. I think everyone has the capability of good, and if they’re bad, it’s because they chose to be.
moonlit - are you a neat or messy person? Is your room / house orderly? I’m an organized mess.
flannel - have you ever gone on a bad date? I’ve never been on a date.
cocoa - if you could have any type of hair, what colour and cut would you have? I would want blue or red hair. Like the kind that looks like a normal color when it’s down, but then you flip it over and it’s bright blue.
ghost - is there someone that you miss having in your life? As much as I cringe at high school, I do miss my high school friends.

So for my new years resolution I decided that this year I was going to read 52 books, e.g. one a week. Also that I would only count books that I was reading for the first time (so i don’t just reread night watch 52 times) and that I was going to try and read outside my comfort zone.
As you can see, January’s went pretty well. (badly written ramblings under the cut)
What I read this month (in chronological order)
Red Seas under Red Skies: Honestly I expected to finish this before the new year, but family (amongst other things) meant that I put it off and finished it on the 5th instead. However, even though I took a gap in the middle of reading, rsurs still stood out to me as a very good book, and i’m glad it was the first thing I finished this year (even though it ended on a massive cliffhanger, what the hell?!, but i’m getting republic of thieves soon so I’ll see how that turns out.)
I loved the lies of Locke Lamora when I first read it, and honestly the second book lives up to that. Locke Lamora himself continues to be in equal parts amusing as hell and a little shit (I think anyone who knows me shouldn’t be surprised that he’s my fave character) but I also liked Jean a lot (more) in this book, especially because he’s a supporting character on his own rather than being one of several gentleman bastards. I do like that he gets a fair few standalone moments in this book.
what I will say is that rsurs has a feel that the author just put stuff in because he felt like it (e.g. the actual seas part comes in quite a while into the book and kinda out of nowhere) but I love pirate stuff so honestly I don’t mind, and seeing Locke and Jean with absolutely no idea what they’re doing is hilarious. Also bonus points for Zamira Drakasha who is fantastic, Ezri who is tiny and intimidating (something I appreciate because I’m the former but not the latter) and gratuitous cats, which I could never argue with (though I don’t think I would be able to get any of my cats aboard a ship).
I am Malala: So I decided to spend this month finally getting round to reading books I have had for ages, and I am Malala is the first of those. (I think I might have got it as a present one or two years ago). Anyways, I found it in my newly regained stash of childhood books (long story short they were in a crate in a cupboard behind several other cupboards and I wasn’t allowed to touch them, but I am now).
Should I talk about the actual book now?
So Malala Yousafzai is someone I’ve admired for a long time, for obvious reasons. She’s only a couple of years older than me, and I think that makes me appreciate her strength even more, because it’s easier for me to compare to my own(I am really not a strong willed person :/). That was one of the things that stood out to me about the book, that Malala obviously had such courage to continue with her life, and while she was supported by her family, ultimately she had to make these very tough decisions and choose between her safety and the education which she valued. Throughout the book, she keeps on choosing the latter, even whilst her ability to access it diminishes. It’s very powerful to read about, and while I like to hope that I would make that same choice in the same situation, I’m not sure if I would be brave enough to. The other thing about this book is that there is a genuine love for her home in the swat valley, which makes it all the more painful when the Yousafzai family eventually have to leave. All in all that’s a constant in this book, that the things that are beautiful and worthwhile are still beautiful and worthwhile, even while the taliban attempt to destroy them, and that one day the taliban will be gone, and they will be beautiful and worthwhile still.
I’m really glad I finally got round to reading this book. I very rarely like biographies, but I am Malala told a very painful story of endurance against evil, and I regret not reading it earlier.
Mother Courage and her Children: In general, I really enjoy reading plays for a couple of reasons. First of all, they’re usually pretty short, and you can read them in a couple of hours and still get a really engaging story in that time (while I do have a soft spot for ridiculously long fantasy novels, I can’t read them all the time, we all need a break sometimes.) The second reason is that if you read them aloud, plays gain an extra (let’s call it a) dimension to them that books usually don’t have. MCahC isn’t an exception to this, and if you’re not self-conscious I would recommend reading it out loud.
As for the play itself, it’s a classic, and I’m not sure I can say anything much that smarter people than me haven’t said before. I’ll try anyways though.
I’m always interested in reading stories that are pacifist in nature, but focus on people who are invested in war. There’s definitely an interesting juxtaposition between how mother courage continues to profit and benefit from the war, whilst at the same time suffering at it’s hands and losing her family to it. It’s kinda inevitable that her family is ruined by it, but at the same time she stays close. You could argue that she has little choice (after all, there’s a war on, where else is she going to get paid) but nevertheless I found myself wishing in a futile way that Kattrin would escape and live. (spoilers: she doesn’t.) It’s a play that’s much more interested in talking themes then telling a straight story, and the themes are just grim.
Also I went on the wiki page for this book and apparently the MCR song “mama” was based on this play and I don’t even know how to feel about that.
The Railway Detective, book 1-->5: So, I’ve been interested in these books for a while now, mostly because I have a couple of niche book interests which are rarely indulged.
1. I really like history mysteries and
2. I think trains are cool (insert asdf joke).
As a result I’ve been kinda nosing around these books whenever I see them, but nothing ever convinced me to read them. That is, until just before christmas I was waiting to see tlj with a friend, and I was on the charity shop trawl. And there I found them. The first 5 books in a neat little cardboard box set. For £2. Which was the real push I needed to buy them (after all, I could never afford them new, I don’t have £40 to spend on anything, let alone books.)
They’re relatively short and easy to read, at least compared to a lot of the dense stuff I usually go for. Personally, I really liked them, and I might well reread one or two at some point (most likely the 3rd book “the railway viaduct” which was my fave. There’s nothing that revolutionary in them, you have your standard detective + sergeant, a series of historical characters including the perpetual Victorian favorites of pickpockets, thugs, lords, industrialists etc, a pretty love interest and her overbearing father. Normal stuff. But I think sometimes I need something a bit formulaic (and to be fair, the mysteries themselves are decent enough and can keep you guessing when they want to). Ironically enough, I think the best place to read these is whilst you’re on a bus or a train. (My 2 hour daily bus journey is definitely how I got through all 5 of them).
All in all, I wouldn’t 100% recommend buying them, unless you’re super into history mysteries or have a lot more disposable cash than I do. But if you find them second hand or in a library then they’re worth checking out.
