Very fun to be an dormant Homestuck in 2023. We saw a post with an aside about the mid-to-highblood bias present in the fandom and we took a moment to think "wait, what?" before remembering how much people posted about Mallek, Lanque, and Marvus. Obviously no one asked our opinion on the matter but we think that a lot of the bias here may just be because fandom people will jump at any vaguely conventionally attractive male character who can say something angsty, and we don't see 99% of this effect because we rapidly get fatigued with any character who is overly present in the fandom and any ship that has overrepresentation in the sample size and start blocking tags.
Very highly effective approach, admittedly, but it leaves us a bit out of the loop. We only really start encountering Issues with that approach in smaller fandoms when blocking any given popular ship will instantly shrink our mutual circle to Just Us and maybe, like, one guy who we dragged in here ourself, so we have to relax blocking standards somewhat and just make it "blocked for a week" or something similar.
#we speak#whenever we decide to revisit homestuck ao3 we just block the entire first block of Popular Ships#we have not seen a da vekat fic in years and this is vital for not burning out our tolerance of Them Interacting At All#we are censoring that tag so it does not appear in their ship tag also#we still have the mar vus tag blocked. we know this bc we have one specific clown mutual who likes him and will reblog him sometimes#but its been like a year since we've seen mal lek or lan que in anything and we like it that way#this has also made our character preferences skew like. OVERWHELMINGLY to woman and enbies over time#because fandom as a whole is EXTREMELY prone to focusing on men and setting anyone who is Not A Men as a background character#which results in a weird little loop where we'll get into something and get burnt out on like. Every Guy within a week#simply due to the sheer oversaturation That One Guy has#and then we only get time to recover on the saturation of Random Gals bc of the trends falling towards Just Men and nothing else#and then our Characters We Like portfolio ends up being like. five women used as background characters and one enby#sometimes we will also pick up a guy who gets villainized by like half the fandom or a popular character where the popular takes suck#but like. it's almost all background characters you see what we mean. we're a home for random blorbos that no one pays attention to#because in order to get into Actually Liking A Character Enough For Them To Hit Heavy Rotation#a high concentration of fans is like. an active detriment bc we'll get burnt out on them#and if people talk about them Too Much to the extent that theyre unavoidable then we will inevitably start to dislike them#we are but a simple beast and if we don't get recovery time we begin to run into Issues with random things & tropes#and then our recovery time once we've hit burnout is like. months to years#anyways this is a long tag ramble but generally if we spend the time to explore a character and figure them out we'll enjoy them in some wa#with the major caveat that if theyre Too Popular we may dislike them regardless#and the way that they're framed both inside and outside of the original narrative can heavily influence us if we run into it too often#bianca and jaune are utterly facinating characters who work with a set of tropes we would LOVE to do justice to#but unfortunately people who like bianca and jaune are the kind of people who think they did nothing wrong#so we can't just like. Talk About Them And Whats Going On There#without running face first into people that genuinely believe theyre a Good And Loving Family Who've Done Nothing Wrong In Their Lives#but we feel a lot like if we go into depicting them without making “THIS IS IN FACT BAD” incredibly blatantly obvious#that we will begin running into people who DO NOT have the prerequisite knowledge and will take it WAY off from intended

Korosensei Never Dies - Chapter 6
Words - 1967 Ao3 Version Chapter 5 (last) Chapter 7 (Next)
AN: Just wanted to note (although it’s already in tags) that there are no ships in this story. The characters may be affectionate with each other, but it’s all platonic.
====
Exams are the worst part of school, but the end of the first term approaches fast. Tommy determines he will not fail. Philza has promised to teach them how to fight, and by the ever-loving stars, Tommy wants to show off his mad skillz.
He's so intent on getting fighting lessons that he's dragged his friends into group study sessions. Wilbur insists on leading said sessions, and somehow the schoolwork gets entwined with role-playing battles with fiercesome monsters.
"The answer is forty-two!! I pull out a bazooka and blast everything to smithereens!" Tubbo cackles. "Nothing shall stand in the way of world domination."
"Tubbo," Wilbur sighs for the fortieth time. "That would kill all of your teammates."
"Do I care?" Tubbo grins innocently. "Less competition, big man!"
"I lay down and die." Ranboo says drily, leaning against the wall with his arm around Tubbo's shoulders.
"Not you, Ranboo, you're going to be my puppet queen. Every world-dominating super-villain needs a puppet queen." Tubbo says, quite matter-of-fact.
Tommy scrawls messily on his workbook, determined to complete the next answer first and get a turn. "Ha! Fucking x equals twenty-nine!" He crows. "I shoot my nets at Tubbo and capture him!!"
"Stand-off." Wilbur says with a grin. "Who wrote Frankenstein?"
"Some woman with a boring name." Tommy retorts.
"Anne Rice!" Tubbo cries.
"Tommy, you got the closer answer. It was Mary Shelley."
"Alright, I win, and I say 'Hahaha, you fucking imbecile, you are no match for me!' and then I drag them to jail."
"I completed my worksheet, Wilbur." Eret pipes up. Wilbur takes it, then nods for Eret to complete his bonus action. "I stab Tommy and release Tubbo, saying, 'The world is yours for the taking, but allow me to oversee a portion of it.' and then I kneel and plant my sword in the dust."
"Oh! Oh!" Tubbo waves his worksheet in the air. "Ranboo, stab him for me!"
"As you wish." Ranboo sighs with a wicked grin. Eret protests weakly in the background.
"Ranboo, you need to answer a question correctly, first." Wilbur steeples his fingers. "Or else there will be penalties."
"I, uh, I think I got this one correct." Ranboo shows his study sheet to Wilbur, who nods curtly.
"Fine, go ahead."
Ranboo turns to Eret and says in a dark tone, "You betrayed your friend. I can't trust you, Eret." Then he turns to Wilbur, "I run him through with my dagger."
"Eret, you're now a ghost." Wilbur shuffles through his game notes.
"Aw, man. Can I haunt anyone?"
"Yes."
"I haunt Ranboo to remind him of his crimes."
"Aw, dang, another voice." Ranboo groans playfully.
"Whaddya mean, another??" Tubbo cries. "Am I being replaced, Ranboo??"
"You- you are the voice." Ranboo laughs nervously. "Even when you're dead, I'll still hear you, shouting at me to not kill the bees."
"You better not. I worked hard to cultivate our apiary."
"I won't, I won't."
Tommy finishes his worksheet, ignoring the chatter of the others. "Ha!" He turns it into a paper plane and throws it to Wilbur. "I want twelve actions now!"
"Okay, Tommy." Wilbur replies with a sly smile. The others protest, but Tommy has Wilbur wrapped around his little finger, so they won't be winning this battle.
"But! I want to split them up between us, because I'm a fucking nice person who loves women."
"Go ahead."
"My first action as King de facto of the world is to declare peace between the Moon and Mars."
"Wait, wait, you're king?? Eret, you didn't even kill him properly!!" Tubbo throws up his hands. "Ranboo, kill Tommy for me."
"Hypothetically, what if I didn't?"
"Ranboo. Are you betraying me??"
"No, no, I said hypothetically."
"Then, hypothetically, I would nuke your entire homeland and make you watch as I killed your family before your very eyes."
"Oh! Oh, no."
"And then I would torture you to death."
"Oh, man. That would not be good."
"So are you going to betray me?"
"Apparently not."
"Aw, man. I wanted to torture somebody." Tubbo sighs.
Ranboo gives Tommy a look that says 'help me'.
"You both lost your turns for talking too long." Wilbur decides. "Tommy and Eret, you both have an extra turn."
"I turn corporeal using necromancy, and I use Tubbo's soul as the energy source, draining him of life." Eret says, his cheerful eyes belying his dark tone.
"No! Ranboo, avenge meeeee!!" Tubbo cries melodramatically to the heavens.
"Oh no! I'll avenge you!!"
"I kill Ranboo." Tommy cackles at the horrified look on Ranboo's face.
"Oh, that's not good."
"How do you kill him, Tommy?" Wilbur asks.
"I stab the bastard through the fucking eyes."
"Oh. Man. That sounds painful." Ranboo winces.
"It is. You're screaming like a fucking bitch."
"Am I? Oh dang, that's not fun. Am I a ghost now?"
"Ghostboo." Tubbo laughs. "You're now Ghostboo."
"You're Toast, you don't get to mock my name."
Tommy frowns. "What's my ghost name?"
"Ghommy." Ranboo laughs. "Eret is Gheret."
"Tommy, you think we're ready for the exams?" Wilbur gathers the papers scattered across the floor.
"Fuck yeah, we are. We'll crush those bastards to dust. We'll get the highest grades of anybody in the entire school!"
++++
"What do you mean, you can't transfer me?? My grades are the worst they've ever been in years!!" Jack cries, stomping his foot on the polished wood floor of the principal's office.
"I'm sorry, duckie, but I can't let anyone transfer between classes this year." Puffy-- rumored to be a pirate in a past life and therefore always called Captain-- frowns as she flicks through Jack's portfolio. "Why did you want to be transferred, anyway?"
"No reason." Jack grumbles, then stomps out of the office, slamming the door behind himself.
"How'd it go?" Niki hops down from one of the pillars.
"Terribly. Those bastards in 3-E must've told Captain Puffy to not let anyone in. They're probably planning to take over the world now, using Techno as bait!" Jack cries, his eyes burning with furious tears.
"That's awful!" Niki wails. "What will we do?"
"What do heroes do to villains? We bomb them."
"Bomb them?"
"I don't know how yet." Jack grins, filled with burning rage. "But we'll think of something."
"I know a man." Niki says decisively. "He'll get us supplies. If they really are planning to end the world, we need to stop them."
++++
Exams roll around, and 3-E joins the the main school buildings for the tests. Quackity and Sapnap both leap on and hug Karl Jacobs. Tommy strides through the testing auditorium like he owns the place, with Wilbur glaring at everyone and Tubbo whetting his dagger with a placid smile.
Fundy watches the chaos from the sidelines, chewing on caramel taffy and bubblegum at the same time. He doesn't recognize the quiet boy huddled in a corner and writing. Before he can creep over and look at the boy's words, Eret accosts him. "Hey, man."
"Oh, hey!" Fundy grins and hugs his friend. "What've you been up to?"
"Oh, just trying to stop the world from ending and make a profit in the process, you know, the usual."
"Right, right. What's up with that, anyway? This guy, Technoblade? He must be really hard to kill if nobody's done it yet."
"We have till the year ends." Eret says gravely.
"Right. But why hasn't anybody, I don't know, tried to get in on the action?"
"The government is supposed to be keeping his location a secret." Eret adjusts his sunglasses.
"Weird." Fundy pops a bubble between his lips.
"Indeed. I know there must be a weakness. But I'm not sure what it is."
"Maybe it's something like technical immortality! Maybe he can only be killed if he lets it happen!" Fundy theorizes, chewing more intensely.
Eret grimaces. "Perhaps. Threatening his friend, Philza, directly is out of the question. But perhaps we can get the kill switch from the president."
"Woah, woah, back up!" Fundy laughs. "There's already a kill switch in his friend and the prezz hasn't thought to use that??"
"Well, he's a hostage, but- oh."
"Exactly!! If the prezz actually wanted him dead, all they'd have to do is threaten to kill this Philza dude if Techno doesn't let himself be killed!" Fundy blows another bubble and pops it with his teeth. "Damn, I'm good."
"That's assuming Technoblade would die if he allowed it. What if he can't?" Eret muses.
"He has to have some weakness. How was he even created??"
"I- I don't know."
"The only way a mutant like that could be created is through Human intervention, aka a laboratory and scientists!!" Fundy claps his hands together excitedly. "But why would scientists create a creature who can destroy the world?? Unless he can't, and this is all just a damn test."
"Hmm." Eret doesn't sound convinced.
"So, they're trying to develop immortality, and they're testing it on Technoblade-"
"Why him?" Eret asks. "And if it is a test, why here, with a bunch of students?"
"He got loose before the tests could be finalized, and they're trying to contain him again!" Fundy starts pacing. "He was a terrorist, yeah? I remember him in the news. The Acolyte."
"Blood for the blood god." Eret reminisces, paling. "That's right."
"He only ever went after important government figures! But, five years ago, he disappeared, and nobody ever heard from him again. Until now..." Fundy grins wildly. "This is amazing, I can't believe I get front row seats to a conspiracy!"
"Wait." Eret groans. "He had a partner."
"Oh! He did?"
"Technoblade was the Acolyte. But his partner was the Angel. What if that was-"
"Philza!!" Fundy cries. "Oh god, we have both of the most deadly international terrorists in my school!! Why couldn't I have worn better clothes??"
"I don't think that should be our main concern." Eret steeples his fingers. "I think we should worry more about what they're planning to do."
"I'm going to talk to Captain Puffy." Fundy decides. "Come with me?"
"I'll pass. Good luck."
"I've got the best luck in the world." Fundy crows and skips off. He glances back once, briefly, only to see Eret watching him with an unreadable expression.
++++
Tipsy, Schlatt lounges on one of the pristine metal tables. In the background, HBomb sweeps up the shards of a broken whiskey bottle, the remnants of a drunken tantrum.
"Heyyy." Schlatt greets the mercenary waiting in the doorway. "Come on in."
"How much do I get paid for my trouble?" The mercenary asks, slouching in a too-large purple hoodie and baggy pants.
"Fifteen billion, take it or leave it." Schlatt grins.
"I'll take it. But this is the last time."
"Sure, honey."
"How'd you lose him again?"
"Bitch killed half my fucking scientists." Schlatt shrugs genially, hiding his irritation. "But we've got a neutralizing agent, now." He tosses a capsule to the mercenary, who catches it and inspects it. "Inject that and he'll be as harmless as a two-ton hippo."
"That's hardly what I'd call harmless."
"Eh, semantics. He won't be immortal."
"Hmm." The mercenary pockets the neutralizer. "I'll do it. But you'd better pay me exactly what you promised, or he dies."
"C'mon, darling, what do you take me for? A scam artist?? Nah, that's not my fucking style. Return him safe and sound, and everything will be just fine." Schlatt lights a cigar, takes a deep drag, then lets it all out in a slow plume. "Do as I say and nobody gets hurt."
++++
Eret opens his buzzing phone and answers, "Hey."
"Crocodiles don't cry often." The familiar voice says coldly into their ear.
"Crocodile tears are worthless." Eret replies.
Purpled laughs on the other end. "What do you say, partner? Ready to make some dough?"
Eret grins, baring her teeth. "Always."

Hail to the Queens!
(crossposted from Kurtis J. Wiebe’s website)
Tumblr media
THIS IS ME NOW
It was early 2012 when the core concept of Rat Queens came together. I’d been in contact with Roc Upchurch after meeting him randomly on a street corner over the weekend of NYCC in 2011. I’d seen his work on Vescell and was inspired by it. He was making art in a way I’d never seen in a comic series.
While he finished Vescell, we emailed several times, batting around ideas. We’d attempted a small pitch on a concept that I’d originally worked on with Owen Gieni (who, in a strange twist, became a later Rat Queens artist), it was called Goblinettes, and it ultimately didn’t float. Didn’t seem like there was much interest in a story about a three-piece all girl goblin punk band that sang about love and getting along.
We went back to the ideas phase. We both knew we wanted to work on fantasy. And we both knew we wanted to try something fresh with a genre we loved.
Tumblr media
I sat and thought on it awhile. I asked myself all kinds of questions. What did I love about fantasy? What was ridiculous? What was annoying and outdated?
It wasn’t a new thing for me to have female leads in my stories; Debris, The Intrepids, Beautiful Creatures and even Peter Panzerfaust, while predominantly male, had women that are, to date, my favourite I’ve written.
Tumblr media
Having four female leads wasn’t the novel idea, in my opinion. What I wanted to do was have a fantasy adventure story where being a woman wasn’t a thing. And in so many of the fantasy books I’d read, it almost always certainly was.
We did a call and I laid out the idea that I’d come up with in the worst way possible: It’s Lord of the Rings meets Sex in the City. We both laughed. It was a terrible mash, but we both knew what it meant.
That’s where it started. Where it would land, how it would end, we had no idea. Our best guess was five issues and a good looking trade collection.
Rat Queens #1 came out on September 25th, 2013. Five and a half years ago, now.
On that day, my life changed.
Within months, Rat Queens became the most successful project I’d ever worked on. Both in sales and in the acclaim it garnered from an industry, a community that had become so important to me. It was the highlight of success after years of personal struggles that had nearly sapped me of hope and strength.
Tumblr media
I felt like I finally belonged.
And it was good for a while. We always struggled to get the series out on its monthly schedule (I have many thoughts about the industry’s demand on artists, but that’s for another time), but we were creating something we loved and the fans loved in returned. It was the best a creator could ask for.
Since then, it’s been a long and difficult journey. The years following September 25th, 2013 have been a trail through the highest mountains and the darkest caves.
I had a daughter.
I moved seven times. (Yes. Seven.)
I began new comic series’.
I finished several others.
It’s no secret Rat Queens has had its share of controversies. They took a heavy toll, bringing me back to a dark place I thought I’d escaped when this Rat Queens journey began.
You can read about my brush with suicide in the summer of 2016 here: https://kurtiswiebe.com/2016/10/28/this-side-of-suicide/
Tumblr media
Even then, I kept creating new stories with these four women throughout it all. But, I have to be honest, it was getting more difficult with each new iteration. Each new artistic team that came on.
At the end of the day, I had to step back and ask myself some familiar questions: What did I love about fantasy? What was ridiculous? What was annoying and outdated?
This past summer of 2018, I found that I didn’t have the answers I used to. Or maybe I’d already answered them and somehow lost myself along the way.
In that reflection I realized that I’d been burned out on the one thing that once gave me joy and provided for my family.
I was terrified.
And then I knew: it was time to move on.
That fear only grew, but it was the seed to plant a new foundation. I’d wrapped up so much of my identity in Rat Queens; my worth, my voice, and world-view.
Five years is a long time. We all grow and change, day to day, and over the span of five years, I’ve faced many shifts to my status quo.
Those changes excite me, I want to write about them. While that doesn’t mean the Rat Queens can’t be part of the equation, it means that I want to commit the next span of years to these new perspectives that have deeply informed my life.
So, I’m saying goodbye to Rat Queens. For now, and the foreseeable future.
THE NEXT CHAPTER
Rat Queens is still popular. I know fans love these characters, and I’ve always been interested to see what other people would bring to the table with this large cast of characters. There are still a hundred stories that could be told with Betty, Hannah, Braga, Dee and Violet.
With that said, I’m passing on the torch to a new team, a group of amazing creators who will carry on the legacy of the Rat Queens in an exciting and new direction.
Tumblr media
Ryan Ferrier, who has lettered the series since we came back in 2017, will be taking over writing duties. He was absolutely the first choice for me. We share a similar sense of humour and he’s been living with these characters for over a year now. If you haven’t read any of Ryan’s work, I HIGHLY recommend D4ve. It was my first foray into his work, and it’s genius and funny and heartfelt and great.
Our new line artist, Priscilla Petraites, is someone I’ve been watching for years. She has emailed me every year since 2014, always sending me her new portfolio, to show her progress and growth as an artist. I’ve always had an interest in working with her, but could never find the right concept for the collaboration. When I decided to move on from Rat Queens, Priscilla was an obvious choice. And the heavens aligned, schedules collided and Rat Queens is now her baby.
Marco Lesko and Priscilla had worked together on several other projects as a team before coming on to Rat Queens. I’d seen their work together and bringing Marco onto Rat Queens as our colourist made absolute sense. They have an artistic chemistry that drips off the page, and I can’t wait to see them craft their take on the world of Rat Queens.
This new team will be taking over in April, 2019, with their one shot: Rat Queens Swamp Romp, before jumping into their full-time duties with issue 16 in June.
Tumblr media
So. What’s next? And what about current Rat Queens artist, Owen Gieni?
In the past few years, Owen has become like a brother to me. He’s been around through the toughest of times and has always been an honest and stalwart friend. Through our long conversations over the years, we’ve discussed hundreds of theories and philosophies, and even more stories and worlds.
It’s time we did something with them.
2019 is about change. About taking a risk, in art and in life.
Together, Owen and I are founding a creative company; Beast and Bone Studios.
We’re going to be creating a pile of new art, comics and otherwise. We’re finally going to get a start on a series we’ve been talking about since summer of 2017. Plus a few others we’ve been hashing out in the last few months. I cannot wait.
First, I want to thank Jim Valentino, the man who saw something unique in this little series. He backed me through everything, and has supported my decisions, both creatively and professionally, and it’s been a fantastic journey. I call him my second dad for a reason!
And finally, I want to thank every single person out there who’s supported Rat Queens, and more directly, supported me through the past five years. It has never been unappreciated, and the kindness you’ve shown through emails and messages has saved me more than you can know. I will be forever grateful for the fans and to the five Queens who made my current life possible.
Here’s to you, Violet, Dee, Hannah, Braga and Betty.Especially you, Betty. You know you’ve always been my favourite.
Tumblr media
Much love,Kurtis Wiebe
PS: Here’s your first look at Ryan, Priscilla and Marco’s Rat Queens!

nick carraway and jay gatsby are both gay and heres why
its 11:30 at night and i have class tomorrow but ive been itching to make this post for about a week so im gonna do it. this wont be centered as much around jay and nick being in LOVE, since id have to read and analyze it a bit more to make honest to god claims and opinions for that, but these r some of the reasons that point to both of these characters being completely gay. also, im going to be issuing some points from others sources, but ill include links to the original texts which i recommend reading!
1
so the great gatsby was written in 1925, a time full of alcohol, financial bliss, and parties like u would not believe. many of these themes are prevalent in the novel, making themselves known all throughout. even the term ‘gatsby-like’ is extremely well known. needless to say, this book is extremely well known in every front. one of the ones i saw the most was calling the great gatsby ‘the greatest love story ever written.’ and before i read the novel myself, i wouldnt have been able to tell u any different. but when u read it, and really, how u analyze it, really shapes how u see the characters. to some people, it really could be an amazing love story. but to me, this story is written about someone obsessed with a facade, denying himself who he is, and a man who watches his downfall and can do nothing to stop him.
one very important thing to acknowledge is how this novel is told: its told completely in nicks perspective. we only know how he feels, we only know these characters based on how nick sees them. it is immediately biased towards nick. and what he does is describe a hell of a lot of people. but it is very distinctive in the way he does it; men and women are very differently described.
nick describes daisy in her voice and the power it has over people. all of nicks flowery language goes into daisys speech, but not in great length about what daisy looked like. with jordan, nick does a bit more describing in the way she is ‘small-breasted’ and had the ‘shoulders of a young cadet.’ these traits are masculine, and we know from the novel that nick does enjoy jordans company and he does say he ‘enjoys looking at her.’ hell, even the name ‘jordan’ is traditionally masculine. nick sees jordan leaning more towards masculinity than femininity. but even still, the flowery language is not as grand as it could be, not as we know nick can get.
its when nick is describing men that things get bold and expressive. even while describing tom does nick go into great and intimate length with him;  ‘ He had changed since his Haven years. Now he was a sturdy straw haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward. Not even the effeminate swank of his riding boots could hide the enormous power of that body he seemed to fill those glistening boots until he strained the top lacing, and you could see a great pack of muscle shifting when his shoulder moved under his thin coat. It was a body capable of enormous leverage -- a cruel body’ the author of this paper literally said this passage ‘pulses with sexual energy,’ and this is for a character nick doesnt even like. it obviously means more in the way nick describes him, has more heart and passion put into it.
and now gatsby, who nick, in the final chapters, dwells on even more. we know gatsby is attractive, that much we can tell without nick even really having to describe him. but even in a single paragraph about his smile does it provoke more feeling than anything else about daisy or jordan;  ‘ He smiled understandingly-- much more than understandingly. It was one of those rare smiles with a quality of eternal reassurance in it, that you might come across four or five times in your life. It faced --or seemed to face-- the whole external world for an instant, and then concentrated on you with an irresistible prejudice in your favor. It understood you just as far as you wanted to be understood, believed in you as you would like to believe in yourself, and assured you that it had precisely the impression of you that, at your best, you hoped to convey.’
like. damn nick. this is only about gatsbys smile. this was no accident or cruel twist of fate; nick is enamored with jay and obviously finds him attractive and also enjoys looking at him, like jordan. nick sees men and women differently. this could be chocked up to ‘it was the olden days’ and ‘sexism,’ but nick isnt rude to these women, nick is simply not interested in them, at all.
but how do we know nick is gay? wheres the textual proof? its written out word for word, you just have to know where to look. and where to look is at the very end of chapter 2.
so chapter 2 does a lot for the plot; it basically introduces nick to the life these people live and makes him see how unappealing it is. we meet a large cast of characters and expand on others, like myrtle, her sister, and most importantly to the subject of nicks sexuality, mr. mckee.
mr. mckee is described as a ‘pale feminine man’ and nick offhandedly describes the smudge of shaving cream on his cheek. weird right? later in the night, nick describes himself as ‘ Taking out my handkerchief I wiped from his cheek the remains of the spot of dried lather that had worried me all the afternoon.’ nick has been LOOKING at this married man all night and cleaned him up when he was messy like come ON. plus, a ‘pale feminine man’ could very easily be a stereotype of a gay man, especially in the 1920s.
but then comes the most important part about nicks sexuality in the entire book: the ellipses.
the great gatsby is relatively short, only about 200 pages or so, give or take. fitzgerald would not include anything he wouldnt need, as he is also an expert in metaphors and making things seem as they are not. everything is masterfully placed and paced, making it seem to flow like water.
the scene in question describes mr. mckee and nick on an elevator, leaving the party. mr. mckee walked out, leaving his wife, and nick decided to follow. heres the scene:
Come to lunch some day,” he suggested, as we groaned down in the elevator.
“Where?”
“Anywhere.”
“Keep your hands off the lever,” snapped the elevator boy.
“I beg your pardon,” said Mr. McKee with dignity, “I didn’t know I was touching it.”
“All right,” I agreed, “I’ll be glad to.”
. . . I was standing beside his bed and he was sitting up between the sheets, clad in his underwear, with a great portfolio in his hands.
“Beauty and the Beast . . . Loneliness . . . Old Grocery Horse . . . Brook’n Bridge. . . . ”
Then I was lying half asleep in the cold lower level of the Pennsylvania Station, staring at the morning Tribune, and waiting for the four o’clock train.
LIKE. WHAT.
those ellipses separate the time between nick and mr. mckee on the elevator and nick and mckee at his home, with one in underwear and then nick leaving for the train at 4am. there is a large gap of time missing from this, and nick decided to leave it out while fitzgerald decided to keep it in. it means something, and the use of ellipses gives the audience enough to know what is happening without explicitly telling them. it is the authors ‘wink wink nudge nudge’ to the audience. think of the environment nick was in; tom was cheating with myrtle, the heavy metaphor of the eyes watching over the sins we think no one can see. this party was full of mischief and nick fucked a married man.
mckee does not seem intoxicated, he invites nick out to lunch while gripping the elevator handle, which are always objects shaped like dicks. plus in the novel, the scene does feel somewhat out of place; nick does not spend too much time discussing the interactions between mckee and himself, it seems thrown in. i get the impression that nick almost didnt want to include it it his writing, and put it in last minute. however, nick is fictional and i dont have much to go on off from an almost 100 year old book. its open to personal interpretation, but it seems like nick and mckee had sex and nick left on the 4am train, leaving mckee in his underwear at his own home looking through his pictures.
even at the beginning of the novel, nick is planning on living in a house with another man before the plan falls through and he goes to washington dc. could this be a failed boyfriend? we cant say. but it is a possibility.
nick carraway ends the novel mourning his friend jay gatsby, moving back to the midwest alone and away from the glitz and glam of new york. his ending does not involve getting married and having kids and riding off into the sunset, which seems bittersweet for our narrator. however, given the way things planned out for other characters, this is the best ending we could hope for for nick, one away from the destruction and one where he can at least begin to to to be happy again.
and now we move onto jay.
ill admit, this has little to do with textual evidence; i cant point out a place where jay fucks a dude or describe the way jay sees men and women; with nick being our narrator, again, he only know his perspective. but we do hear things about jay from other characters, how he acts and acted before nick and the type of man he is.
wolfshiem describes jay as ‘ very careful about women. He would never so much as look at a friend’s wife.’ this means that jay knows women and knows when to back off, never advancing on someone he had no claim to. this is very important to me for several reasons.
1. it implies jay is not a cheater
2. it implies jay has been around enough women to know who is who
3. it shows jay is respectful
this also says to me that jay is not bi; he only has eyes for daisy, and not other woman. and those eyes for daisy are questionable.
we know daisy and jay had last seen each other 5 years prior to the events of the novel. in that time, jay had collected numerous things about daisy, built a house just so he could see her, and blew thousands of dollars every weekend for parties in hope that daisy would show up, even obtaining money illegally just to impress daisy.
jay gatsby is obsessed with daisy.
this is obvious from the text, the behaviors he puts forward are strange and creepy in pursuit of daisy. gatsby stares longingly out the window, cant hold a conversation with nick, and flat out bolts out of a restaurant to avoid embarrassment. he is an awkward guy, no doubt. and he lives his life as trying to be someone else, specifically, the man he thinks daisy wants from 5 years ago. when the car crashes with myrtle, all gatsby cares about is how daisy feels; when hes literally about to get ganked all he thinks about is daisy, daisy daisy daisy.
this isnt love, and i think deep down, jay knows it. this is the equivalent of dudebros who go above and beyond to prove they arent gay but end up the most gay of them all. gatsby is compensating for his feelings and trying to push the limit to deny himself more and hide back into the closet. he wants to seem the most manly he can get and basically say ‘wow i love women! i love women so much! look what i did for this woman! look at how much i love her!’
daisy is the first person jay felt he could be himself around, could begin to feel happy. and when he went to war, he no longer had something to push all his feelings onto. plus he was surrounded by other men, and for someone so in denial about their own sexuality, it probably drives them to pretty bad places. pretty obsessive places. he needs daisy, not because he loves her, but because he needs to security blanket. he needs to feel validated.
those glaces and stares out at nick feel like cracks of the real jay poking through, one who likes men but cannot admit it to himself. after all, as a man so attached and desperate for the ‘american dream,’ back in the 1920s, that did not include marrying a man. jay lives with internalized homophobia and tries to calm his nerves with his pretend love of daisy.
i could go on and on about this forever but its 12:30 and i have class.
if u take nothing from this, let me leave u with these main bullets:
TL;DR
nick fucked a dude
nick describes men erotically while he describes women very dully
nick almost lived with another man
jay is obsessed with daisy to repress his emotions
the separation and wartime made things worse for him
his internalized homophobia causes the plot
his longing stares out the window at nick are cracks in his facade
ty and goodnight

Creating Our Own Spaces: Open Television and the Importance of Intersectional Streaming Platforms
Open Television (OTV) supports Chicago-based artists by producing indie web series and pilots that tell intersectional stories. The platform revolutionizes streaming by highlighting nuances in the lived experiences of people of color and the LGBTQ community, and by intentionally holding space for joy, healing, and humor. Lack of diversity in film is well-documented; a recent study by the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative shows that of the top 100 films in 2019, 78 had no LGBTQ characters and 94 had no female-identified LGBTQ characters. The study also found that of 4,357 speaking roles, only 61 (1.4%) were LGBTQ, forty-five characters were gay, 10 characters were lesbian, 3 characters were bisexual and 3 characters were transgender. All three trans characters had a total screen time of no more than 2 minutes. About 71% of these LGBTQ speaking roles were white. While there have been both strides and shortcomings in efforts to increase the depth of LGBTQ and BIPOC television characters in mainstream media, diversity, and inclusion behind the camera is just as integral to filmmaking as representation on screen.
There are some perceptions that we are entering into a Black film Renaissance. The rise of shows like Insecure and Atlanta FX in addition to major Black blockbuster moments for films like Black Panther and Moonlight all suggest that progress is being made. However, the figures reported by The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative show that the number of movies with Black Directors in 2019 fell by more than half; only nine movies released in 2019 had Black directors whereas 15 movies released in 2018 had Black directors.Even when we look at Black and POC directors as a whole, the numbers don’t get much more encouraging; the study also found that out of the 112 directors that made movies in 2019, 19.6% were from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups. While representation for Black directors has been halved, the percentage of women directors helming the most popular films more than doubled between 2018 and 2019. Nevertheless, their share of representation remains critically low. The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that only 10.6% of directors across the top 100 films of 2019 were women. When it comes to writing and producing, representation for women is only slightly better. Women made up 14.4 % of writers across the top 100 films, and only 21.1% of producers.
Diversity behind the scenes is so crucial because it ensures that marginalized communities can tell their stories using characters that have distinct voices, complex backgrounds, agency that extends beyond tokenistic supporting roles, or even leads roles that myopically reinforce tired tropes and harmful stereotypes. For example, when Black writers are in the room, they can construct characters that speak like us instead of mis/overusing awkward AAVE that’s cut and pasted from Twitter into contexts that don’t fit. When women writers are in the room, they can squelch manic pixie tropes and fridging for the sake of male character development. When LGBTQ writers are in the room they can mitigate issues like queerbaiting or focus solely on the trauma of coming out stories without centering queer joy and romance. Similarly, when producers with marginalized identities are in the room, they can thwart gatekeeping by expanding the production value of films made by marginalized artists with limited resources, and by prioritizing inexpensive and creative ways of funding and distributing media (e.g. crowdfunding, virtual screenings, DIY film festivals, etc.). Furthermore, when filmmaking spaces lack diversity, the result can be toxic and alienating, which stifles creativity and demoralizes BIPOC and/or LGBTQ creators. OTV has shown that one of the keys to creating authentic stories is not only getting diverse voices in the room but also making the room a brave space that emphasizes accountability and community while allowing artists the independence and freedom to innovatively experiment with storytelling without fear of exploitation, bigotry, or violence.
OTV exemplifies how critical it is to not only feed diverse narratives into the mainstream media, but to introduce more accessible, inclusive, and alternative ways of filmmaking.
Executives in the film industry often buy into the misconception that intersectional stories that have characters with marginalized identities aren’t worth the investment because they only appeal to niche audiences. On the contrary, many viewers don’t just want cookie cutter, predominately white shows; they are hungry for diverse content that is striking, informational, and binge-worthy. A study released by UCLA revealed that in 2019, films with 41%-50% minority cast earned the most from box office ticket sales, whereas films with the least diverse casts performed the poorest. The #RepresentationMatters report that the National Research Group released in September 2020 shows that 2 in 3 Black Americans don’t see themselves represented in movies or television, and 86% of Black Americans want to see more representative stories on screen. Taken together, these findings suggest that when underrepresented groups see someone who looks like them in a film, it makes them want to support it more because representation is such a coveted rarity for these groups.
It's not enough to sprinkle diversity into mainstream media to increase sales. OTV exemplifies how critical it is to not only feed diverse narratives into the mainstream media, but to introduce more accessible, inclusive, and alternative ways of filmmaking. Recently, Open Television started the OTV Fellows program for emerging writers and directors from marginalized communities. The program seeks out and supports promising talent, helping them build their portfolios for a career in the film industry. OTV also hosts a seven-part workshop series called OTV Study Hall, which features a wide range of panelists and offers insights into career development, production, and marketing.
When we create intersectional TV platforms that are for and by us, shows that spotlight multiple marginalized identities can reach their full potential, and flourish in conversation with content that has a similar range. There is power and value in seeing multi-faceted, genre-bending, intersectional stories as the centerpiece of streaming, rather than cramming them into a specialty category tucked away in a corner of Netflix or Hulu or trying to make them fit in a category where they don’t belong.
Check out some top picks from OTV’s incredible content below

CTN WRAPUP I've spent the last three days visiting with people at CTN-X. CTN is an amazing thing. It's kind of like the invasion of Normandy except with portfolio cases instead of guns! Platoons of people being dropped off to storm the beachhead of animation in an endless stream. It's a bit daunting and exhausting. My voice today is a croak from all the conversations! I'm going to start with a general note... I refer to young animators as "kids". That isn't meant as a pejorative thing. When I was in college people like Frank Thomas and Mike Lah and Grim Natwick would refer to me and my aspiring animation friends as "kids" too. They were honest and straightforward with me. They spent time sharing important information that I still use. I'm here today because of their generosity and kindness and the reason I do what I do is to "pay it forward" to the new crop of kids the same way they did for mine. If I call you a kid, it's a compliment. I'm telling you that you have what it takes and are worth investing into. That said, here are some of my reflections on CTN... When I would sit down to talk with a young artist, I would always start with a few questions to find out who they were and what their experience at CTN had been like. I learned some very interesting things. A lot of young artists were fresh out of college and were eager to show their work. They lined up to get their portfolios reviewed by studio recruiters, but when I would ask them what the reviewers had told them about their portfolios, they all said that they got very little time and feedback. The reviews were brisk, pretty general and the critique was not specific enough to be helpful. Most of the time the feedback was "Not yet. Keep working on it." That shouldn't be surprising. It's the job of a studio recruiter to identify artists who are qualified to fill their available positions. It's not their job to let applicants know how to become qualified. More and more schools are offering programs in animation. I met a lot of recent graduates who were looking for their first job in the business. I would always ask them if they were finding that their education had prepared them to find their first job in animation. Every single one of them answered the same- no. That also shouldn't be surprising. It's possible to give a student an overview of the general points of what it means to work in animation, but learning the specific skills is their responsibility. School isn't a place where you buy an education off the shelf. It's a forum for learning. The self study students do in school is even more important than their classwork. It takes self study to get the fundamental skills to land the first entry level job. It takes self study to advance those skills to get promoted to a better job. If you want to advance and grow as an artist, that self study is what gets you there and it never ends. Grim Natwick was setting aside two hours of each day to study when he was 95 years old. It's important to develop that drive and focus to learn on your own early in your schooling. If you wait until after you've graduated to figure that out, you've wasted four of the most valuable years of your life. I see kids with the "deer in the headlights" look on their faces all the time, and events like CTN just remind them of all the things they should have done but haven't made the effort to do yet. I met a lot of kids that "get it" and a lot of kids that don't. I sat down and talked to them and helped them as best as I could and gave them the time it took to get to the point where I asked, "Do you have any more questions?" and they said "No, I understand." My other AR Board Members Taber, JoJo, Pez, Paul and Mike were all there generously doing the same. After one of us had spent a half hour or more helping explain what is needed to work in animation and how to acquire those skills, every single aspiring animator said the same thing to us. They told us how much our honesty and clarity meant to them. No one else at CTN had given them the same kind of help that we had. That shouldn't be surprising either. Companies at CTN are there to serve their own purposes- to sell their product, advertise their services, recruit candidates for employment- no one is there specifically to help and support artists... except for Animation Resources. When I explained to people what Animation Resources was all about, I would see a look of puzzlement in their eyes. They would be trying to think of another group to compare us to. There's the Union that's focused on the business aspects of animation. There's ASIFA which has become a professional organization, but they don't really address the needs of aspiring artists or independent animators. There are schools, but they are focused on a tuition based curriculum. Women in Animation do good things, but they are focused on women who work in the business. Animation Resources is different. We're a non-profit group that is dedicated to serving artists. We are "artists for artists". Nothing more. Nothing less. You would think there would be a lot of that, but there really isn't. It's just us. I kept seeing that expression of puzzlement as I would explain that we were an educational group that supported self study- meaning no formal lessons, tests or grades. Our charter is to pile up golden reference- the best of the best- so people who want to study can study from the best. Animation students generally didn't know they even needed that, and many professionals I spoke to had never considered that they might need to focus on objective analysis and study if they want to sharpen their skills and advance. But as I talked to them, I would see the look of realization form in their eyes as they began to understand. Then they would get excited and grab a brochure with our website link so they could sign up as soon as they got home to their computer. We live in an era of social media. Everything is bite sized. I understand that. This article I'm writing now is too long for Facebook. Very few people will get to the end of it. But you can't get the ideas across that Animation Resources is trying to get across in 140 characters or a five minute portfolio review at CTN. I'm counting on the people who are serious enough to want to become animators to take the time to absorb the treasures all of us at Animation Resources are taking the time to digitize and share with you. Two professional animators came up to me at CTN and said that they follow us on Facebook and Instagram. They raved about how great the frame by frame breakdowns are- the ones Nicholas John Pozega posts for us every day. They said they are always amazed by the images we post. I asked them if they had ever clicked through to the website. They admitted that they hadn't. They are on their phone and not on a computer, and it's hard to read articles and view galleries of images on a phone. I told them that as professionals, they should have enough of an interest in their art form to figure out a way to bookmark important reference and follow up on it. The purpose of Animation Resources isn't to entertain. It's to inspire and facilitate learning. The lesson for students is the same as the lesson for professionals. The responsibility for learning, growing and advancing as an artist is up to you. We're willing to help you with that, but ultimately it's still up to you. Seeing the spark of understanding and enthusiasm in young artists' eyes is a great thing. I finished up my conversations with all of them the same way... I pointed out that Walt Disney pushed the art of animation forward light years between Steamboat Willie and Snow White. In that short period of ten years, he set the standard of quality and expressiveness that we all look up to. The way he did that was by instituting a program of self study under Don Graham that taught artists how to analyze and break down reference and apply it to their work. We look up to films like Fantasia and Pinocchio to this day. Some people talk about a "second golden age". But we shouldn't go backwards. We should build on the knowledge of the past and apply it to creating a future that is relevant to today and reflects who we are as a society. Reboots and aping style won't do that. Mining the past for technique and observing our world for personalities and things to talk about will create something better than the golden age. I would end our conversation by saying "Make cartoons that I want to watch." I also have to say that speaking to professionals was gratifying as well. I met a few folks I worked with twenty years ago and haven't seen since then. They told me how much they enjoyed working with me back then and that was very nice... but they also said that they have kept up with what I'm doing now with Animation Resources and thanked me for it. I had a gentleman come up to the booth and put his hand on my shoulder and say "Are you Stephen Worth?" I said yes, and he said, "I'm here to thank you and apologize." I was a bit taken aback because I didn't recognize him. He said, "I've been following the Animation Archive for many years. I've used your material and appreciated everything you do. I thank you for that. But I apologize because I've never sent you any money to help you support the project. When I get home, I'm going to correct that and send you a check." I told him, "Don't send a donation. Join as a member. That's the best way to show that we are helping you." "Done." he said. I asked if he was an artist. He said, yes I'm a director... and then he told me a couple of the films that he directed. I knew instantly who he was. He was one of the keynote speakers at CTN. I had never met him and didn't recognize him by sight, but I sure knew all about his great work. I was floored that he knew all about me and my passion project. Sometimes those of us at Animation Resources don't know if the messages in a bottle we're packing up and sending out through the WWW and social media are getting out there over the vast ocean of the internet. I thank Tina Price and all the people behind CTN for creating this great opportunity for the family of animation to get together and celebrate our art form. For me, CTN this year was like thanksgiving. Now I can make my turkey and have another one! -Stephen Worth

with Jacob Aere
After a 14-year absence, American Express returns as a PGA Tour tournament title sponsor beginning next year as The Desert Classic becomes The American Express. American Express has teed off a multiyear title sponsorship deal that returns it to the PGA Tour entitlement roster and provides the event that was played as The Desert Classic this year with a new name. According to a news release, the 2020 pro-am event is scheduled for January 13-19 in La Quinta, California and will operate as The American Express going forward. “American Express’ new multi-year partnership with this historic event on the PGA Tour is a perfect match,” said Stephen Squeri, American Express Chairman and CEO. “Golf consistently ranks as one of the top passions of our Card Members, and the Tour provides some of the most exciting experiences at some of the best venues the game offers. We’re looking forward to making The American Express a ‘must-see’ event.” The deal comes in the nick of time for the tournament, which was in danger of losing its place on the PGA Tour schedule without a title sponsor and cash injection.
A California bill that would allow college athletes to accept endorsement money moved one step closer to becoming law when it cleared the state senate by a vote of 39-0. Once the details are ironed out, the proposed law — known as the Fair Pay to Play Act — heads to California Governor Gavin Newsom, who has 30 days to sign it. If it becomes law, it will go into effect in January, 2023. This bill would allow all college athletes in California to profit from their name, image and likeness. Similar bills are in their infancy in Washington state and Colorado, and North Carolina representative Mark Walker introduced a federal bill in March that would have the same effect, making the Fair Pay to Play Act a "catalyst rather than an end unto itself," as the New York Times noted. The bill's high-profile backers include LeBron James and Draymond Green, both of whom tweeted their support. Naturally, the NCAA has come out in strong opposition of the bill. The association last week claimed the Fair Pay to Play Act is harmful, unconstitutional, and would "upend the balance" of national competition in college sports. Stay tuned.
SportsBusiness Journal lauds corporate social responsibility. Amidst a recent roundup of sports CSR initiatives, SportsBusiness Journal noted that the first project on which educational platform developer EverFi collaborated with a sports property was “a financial literacy program that regional bank BBVA offered for use by elementary school students in a handful of NBA markets, including Dallas, Houston, and Phoenix.” When Houston hosted the NBA All-Star Game in 2013, league sponsor BBVA arranged for Rockets star James Harden to appear at a participating school. “While it’s cool to have a BBVA banker come into the classroom, it’s even cooler if James Harden shows up,” said Jon Chapman, co-founder and president of global partnerships for EverFi, which has developed online educational modules on topics ranging from financial literacy to STEM to anti-bullying, branded for presentation by teams, leagues, and sponsors. After Houston, EverFi developed educational modules for the NHL and NHLPA around science, technology, engineering and math; for the NFL and the United Way around character development and African American history; for MLB focusing on learning loss during summer vacation; and with MLS around anti-bullying. We look forward to celebrating a Sport Business Handbook event with EverFi at their Washington, DC headquarters on October 2.
In a bid to boost fan engagement during the regular season and into the hunt for October, MLB has launched a new licensed lottery draw game called Baseball Bucks that will feature the official brand marks of MLB and its 30 franchises. According to Hashtag Sports, the game involves players buying a $5 quick-pick ticket featuring ten games from that day’s MLB regular-season schedule. The partnership could also see both parties collaborate on other lottery games based on live baseball, including designs that offer winnings similar to national lottery draws including Powerball and Mega Millions. The deal adds to EquiLottery Games’ growing sports portfolio, having also announced a partnership with Speedway Motorsports to develop a game based on live auto racing which has been tentatively called Race Car Cash.
A generous community benefits package is tied to the Clippers' arena proposal. According to the Orange County Register, the Clippers and city of Inglewood are negotiating an estimated $100 million "community development plan associated with the proposed new 18,500-seat arena that the team wants to open" in 2024. Among the items that Inglewood would like to see included in the agreement are “employment targets during and after construction, with a goal of half of 35% of the permanent jobs in event operations going to Inglewood residents.” Inglewood is also requesting $12.8 million in "grant support, targeted at city youth via after-school programs and scholarships." The city also wants development plans to include $6 million worth of "improvements to the public library and community center and $500,000 for parks." There also is another request that the Clippers dedicate $5.5 million to "cover a first-time home-buyer program and emergency support for renters for families facing eviction." The Clippers in an email "indicated that they’re receptive to the city’s proposal, which they view as being in line with their philanthropic efforts."
New L.A. stadium designed to attract – and hold – the attention of fickle fans. The $5 billion Inglewood stadium is the "most expensive in the U.S., and perhaps the world," and "every dollar spent here has gone toward tackling one of the toughest problems in American sports: making professional football work" in Los Angeles, according to the Wall Street Journal. Rams Owner Stan Kroenke is "spending lavishly to create a building" that he and the team "felt could only exist" in L.A. The complex is "far larger than just a stadium," and the approximately $5 billion "spent on the stadium may wind up being less than half the total cost" of the development. Outside of the stadium, there are "vast and largely empty plots of land," but they are "perhaps more important than the stadium itself." The Rams and the NFL "knew for this project to make any sort of financial sense, it had to be operational year round and not just on Sundays." Sources said that when the property is fully developed, the total expenditure could exceed $10 billion.
Fresh on the heels of donating $1 million to Bahamas hurricane relief, Michael Jordan has "agreed to sell a large piece" of the Hornets to two New York-based investors. The Charlotte Observer reported that Jordan "controls about" 97% of Hornets equity. The sale is "expected to close in the next few weeks." Jordan is reportedly "bringing in" Melvin Capital Founder and Chief Information Officer Gabe Plotkin and D1 Capital Founder Daniel Sundheim. The percentages Plotkin and Sundheim are buying "have not been revealed, nor has the price they are paying." Both prospective owners "must be approved by the NBA, but that process is already underway and the sale is expected to close quickly." A source with knowledge of the deal said that it "does not involve" Jordan "giving up majority ownership" of the team. Jordan reportedly "plans to remain the Hornets’ primary owner 'for a long time.'"  Last February, Forbes "estimated the Hornets were worth" about $1.3 billion.
Four Americans are among the 41 Paralympians from 20 countries to get sponsorship deals from Citi heading into the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. According to Cynopsis Sports, Citi is rolling out its activation plans for its two-year deal with the International Paralympic Committee and 18 national teams it signed last December. All of the athletes will appear with Citi at a range of in-market activations, philanthropic, and community-building events. “It’s a 365-day-a-year partnership, there’s always something going in a market with this partnership,” said Citi Managing Director of Corporate Sponsorship and Marketing Tina Davis. The team includes 22 women, 19 men, and ranges from 17 to 50 in age. Last year, Citi signed a brief two-year deal with the IPC, returning it to the Olympic-Paralympic world after its five years as a USOPC sponsor. The international deal gives Citi rights to the Tokyo Games and rights in 18 countries where it has a significant workforce, but not in the U.S., because the U.S. does not generally sell Paralympic rights separately.
Twitch partners with the Las Vegas Raiders and the brand new Allegiant Stadium for 2020. According to Shack News, the partnership will include a Twitch-branded lounge in the lower level of the stadium, with features including streamer stations, Twitch viewing screens, and esports competitions. Twitch's live-streaming capabilities will be available in a variety of entertainment at Allegiant Stadium, including sporting events, concerts, and esports competitions. The Raiders are moving from Oakland after this season and their new 65,000-seat stadium will also be the home of UNLV football, the Las Vegas Bowl, and the Pac-12 title game. The big overall news is that esports competitions will be coming to Allegiant Stadium and sponsored by Twitch, integrating the NFL and esports under one roof.
Cal Ripken, Jr.’s celebrity golf tournament draws in legendary athletes across major U.S. sports leagues. According to the Patriot News, the event, featuring such legends as Julius Erving, Lawrence Taylor, Ozzie Smith, and Jim McMahon, was held to benefit the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. The inaugural golf outing was held in 2011, and since then, the event has raised several million dollars for the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation. The principal goals of the foundation are to utilize baseball- and softball-themed programs in an effort to build character and teach life lessons to underprivileged children. Founded in 2001, the Foundation has served kids in all 50 states and in other countries such as Canada and Nicaragua. With over 20 Hall of Famers across the NFL and MLB, the event has an impressive amount of star power to help draw attention to giving back to those less privileged through baseball and softball.

Revista Jet Set - August 2016
Where the interest in fashion born?
"Since I was little I had an obsession to disguise me, from there comes the passion to dress me differently. It's a way of expressing that I think is important."
Your arrival at modeling has occurred spontaneously...
"That's right, I started with a taste for photography. In Puerto Rico I posed for some friends artists, I uploaded those photos to the networks and it seems that the photos liked because some photographers began to look for me. Over time I wanted to take more pictures, dress, make-up, it became an exciting subject. Now that I arrived at Bogota, I started working on my portfolio."
Don't you have a taboo with your body?
"Unfortunately I don't have taboos with almost nothing and less with my body. I like to walk around naked, it seems cool to me. It'd be nice that one day no one would realize that one is without clothes and see it as something natural. It's important for me to show that to the people of my generation who need that security. "
How you handle that freedom of being a Vives?
"I am representative of my surname and I never stop having that in my conscience. But it could be worse if my dad and I didn't seem that much, he doesn't have taboos either. Although he is very careful as a father that never crosse the line of morbidity or eroticism. As long as he respects me and makes me respect, I can push my limits a little further."
Today most women look in the mirror and don't like what they see...
"They look ugly, fat, weird, and they wonder how much it costs to have a surgery. I don't feel that way, when I look in the mirror, the most important are my eyes because I realize how I feel, sometimes I look at myself and say: 'Oh, what sadness or what a good day ! because they shine.' "
You have been in the stage to sing with your dad, have you thought about dedicating to music?
"Everything I know I've learned from my dad, but it's a project that worries me because I have a lot of pressure. For the past two years, I've been sitting down and saying, 'I'm going to start my musical project 'and then there's a silence of about 20 minutes and I think,' But where to start?' "
Do you see yourself singing vallenato?  “No, although it seems important to me that there is a woman who does it, but I don’t have the gift to sing with that feeling and put a whole soul in it. Although that music seems beautiful to me.”
So which genre would you like to sing?
“My dad always told me that the most important thing is to create a genre, your own sound and that’s what I’m doing. I like jazz, acoustic music and rap, who have an African American background. I try to mix those sounds with instruments that I like like the harp, the violin, the piano, the ukulele.”
What is your favorite song of your dad?
“I have faith (Tengo Fe) and What has the night (Que tiene la noche) that are part of the rock of my people”
When are we going to hear your songs?
“I’m working on my album, let’s go bit by bit. My dad is part of my team, this year he went to New Orleans and we sat down with my producer and heard the five tracks we have. I expected the worst because he’s very honest but he liked it. That gave me an impetus that maybe this is a good material. I composed all the songs, every sound, it’s my baby. The day I release my music I can’t look back. I hope in a year and a half to have it ready.”
How is Carlos as a dad?
He’s overprotective, by any phone I get a message or a photo of him and he says: ‘Look, daddy exists, don’t forget’ I’m the worst with communication, I have to admit it.
Do you look yourself as a singer or model in the future?
“What I want to be is an activist on women's issues, which is one of the things I study at university. There I focus on our right to equality, to freedom. I am against domestic violence and mistreatment from men.”
Where did this concern arise from the female equality?
“I was born in a family full of women and it has always been very interesting to see the difference between us, how we think. In my family, women say what we feel and we make ourselves respected, but for society that’s very rare. What seems strange to me is that they look different to a woman who says what she thinks.”
Why did you decide to study philosophy?
“My father gave me my first book of philosophy when I was very young, in that book Friedrich Nietzsche said that God doesn’t exist. I read it all the book because I loved it. This man said the most absurd things, but he argued them so well that in the end I agreed with his thinking and even ended up being an atheist. There I entered the passion of being able to say things, to express my reasons with arguments and to be able to convince many people.”
Are you still an atheist?
“No, thanks God I read other books of philosophy that convinced me that God exists. I am not very religious but I consider myself Christian. Now I have another vision that is not that evil God who punishes or judges.”
How are you doing at the university?
“I love my career, I’ve been two and a half year and there are four. I am part of many activist groups, I study in a community very open to the racial theme, which in the United States is now in full bloom. I live in a state where most of us are African-American and there’s a lot of jazz and blues. I have joined those groups to know how I can help, I love to be part of the protests. Every year there is a week of talks and in this I had the opportunity to share experiences with Congo women in Africa on clitoral mutilation and the burqa in Palestine. I talked about misogyny in the Hispanic culture. I really like to compare our situations.”
Do you also like acting?
“Yes, all that theme of dressing up and doing another character fills me. I did a lot of theater at school. I remember coming to my house and saying: ‘Mom, tomorrow I am José in the production of Carmen’ and I’d go with a tie and a mustache; And the next day I would say, ‘Tomorrow I am Francis Bacon’ and she was looking for another mustache.”
How did you assume the separation of your parents?
“It didn’t affect me as much as my brother Carlos Enrique. I have always been weird in my way of thinking, when I was 6 years old I wrote a letter to my parents asking them to divorce because to see them fighting wasn’t good. I said, ‘If you are here for me, don’t do it, if we are going to be together but unhappy, it won’t be better.’ For my brother it was different, he said this has to work. Maybe if in that moment I’d think what was going to come later, in the possibility of another woman and children, I would enter in a panic attack like Carlos Enrique. The good thing is that everything came little by little.”
How do you assimilate it now?
“Well, Elena and Pedro have a very fresh mentality on the subject. The other day Elena told me: ‘Margarita Rosa de Francisco is my mom, my mom is my mom and your mom is also my mom’ I said ‘She sees everything as an immense family and why can not it be like that, if at any moment all those people were important in my dad’s life?’ I feel cool and I don’t think that much anymore.
Do you have plans to come and live in Colombia?
“I was thinking about it, I even took my lease until December because I wanted to do another semester and go to Colombia. Sometimes I feel lonely and I think I can be here with my family. But I really don’t think I’ll come back yet. Now I want to see what campaigns I can work on, there are a lot of activist groups that need help with so much that is happening now in Europe, and I am in the age to do it.”

Paul Rudnick
You’re getting attention for “Coastal Elites,” which was supposed to be a play at the Public Theater, but launches as a film on HBO September 12th, starring Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Sarah Paulson, and Issa Rae in five separate monologues about coping with the new abnormal. Less heralded is your role as Tweeter of Trump family foibles; some of these Tweets strike me as mini-plays, and others just draw blood. How did you come up with the two enterprises, and do you consider them connected in any way?
Paul Rudnick: As with everybody else, Twitter lets me talk back to the Trump administration. It’s like an anti-anxiety medication, and I’ve been trying to make my tweets mostly funny, instead of just constant howls of anguish. The Twitter community intrigued me, from every side of the political divide; it’s like a global town hall. It’s insane and filled with crackpots, but I like logging on to follow the world’s reactions to unfolding events in real time. Trump has galvanized Twitter and the weirdest part is, he pays attention to it. He’s furious when #TrumpMeltdown or #TrumpIsAnIdiot are trending.
I wanted to capture some of this rawness and frenzy in “Coastal Elites.” Right after the 2016 election I went to see my doctor for a check-up. He’s a very circumspect, ultra-professional guy, and he looked shell-shocked. He said that all of his patients didn’t want to talk about any medical problems – they couldn’t stop talking about the election. I wondered if this obsessiveness would subside, but it’s only expanded. And that’s where “Coastal Elites” came from. I started writing it about a year ago, and I was able to rewrite up until shooting, which ended a little over a month ago. We filmed the show remotely, with every possible Covid protection, and our director, Jay Roach and the amazing cast were incredibly helpful – everyone was hyper-informed about every nuance of politics.
The piece was always a collection of monologues, which also reflects Twitter, where people can pour out their frustrations without getting interrupted.
Neither of these projects are theater in any normal definition of theater, although it feels like there’s a theatrical sensibility at work (whatever that means.) I know you’ve had a varied career as a writer [e.g. films such as  Addams Family Values and In & Out; essay collections such as I Shudder], but many people see you primarily as a playwright [The Collected Plays of Paul Rudnick] Or at least I certainly do, given that I’ve been attending your plays since “Poor Little Lambs.” Do you see yourself that way? Yet now playwrights are focusing online. Do you foresee any lasting effect on the theater of the current period, when “theater” and “online theater” are basically synonymous?
I very much think of myself as first and foremost a playwright. That’s how I started and that’s the world I love. When I started writing “Coastal Elites” it felt theatrical but I wasn’t sure where it would land; I wasn’t thinking that far ahead. I’ve written monologues before and combined them into full evenings – this was the structure of my play “The New Century,” which was produced at Lincoln Center. I knew “Coastal Elites” wanted to be monologues, because I was dealing with characters at peaks of emotion and storytelling; they’re all in crisis. Monologues can be like songs in musicals – they’re outbursts.
We were originally going to stage “Coastal Elites” for a series of performances at the Public Theater in NYC, with a live audience, which Jay Roach would film for HBO. When the pandemic hit this became impossible, but then HBO and the show’s production team, which includes Jeffrey Seller, Scott Chaloff and Flody Suarez, all with extensive backgrounds in theater, wondered if there was another route. Once we knew that our cast and crew could be kept safe, Jay and I talked about how the show could be filmed remotely. Because the pieces are monologues, they lent themselves to the intense focus and intimacy of being filmed for TV. It’s like having a front row seat for performances by an incredible cast.
I never anticipated any of this, but the format ended up feeling like a great match for the material, and thanks to Jay, it doesn’t feel limited.
I’ve watched a lot of online theater, and much of it is amazing, especially because the times we’re living in give the shows such yearning. But with all that, I’m like everybody else: I’m desperate for the live event, to see actors onstage, to react as part of a packed theater, and to be in a rehearsal room. I have a new play called “Guilty Pleasure,” which was scheduled for this Fall at the LaJolla Playhouse, to be directed by my long-time collaborator, Chris Ashley. The production has understandably been postponed to next Fall.
I love how theater people are adapting creatively to the shutdown, and trying to stay economically afloat. And online theater will continue to be a world to explore, but nothing replaces, or will ever replace, live theater. It’s too essential and too joyous.
Ok, but do you think this moment of online theater experimentation will have any kind of effect on live theater itself when live theater returns?
The online experimentation during the pandemic will certainly affect subject matter, in terms of plays or musicals taking place during this period. It’s part of the internet’s and social media’s ongoing effect on theater; artists are inventing ways to include the online world in live events, with regard to everything from dating apps to TikTok. The world lives online, and theater had already begun to reflect that. Also, auditions and meetings were already taking place virtually, but this may become even more commonplace. Zoom readings will probably remain a useful tool for writers, actors and directors, as a shorthand during the development of theater projects. Maybe the pandemic has normalized a new form of rehearsal, especially for performers whose personal lives and schedules don’t always allow everyone to be in the same room.
Even more than the pandemic, the Black Lives Matter movement is already having a huge and welcome effect on theater. Artists have been using this downtime to examine how theater, at every level, can become truly inclusive. Whenever life returns to something resembling normal, theater may, in many necessary ways, be changed forever.
What was lost in “Coastal Elites” by having it become a film on HBO rather than a play at the Public Theater?
I’m not sure what was lost in transforming Coastal Elites from a theatrical experience to a filmed one. On one hand, comedy benefits enormously from audience response; but I watched our cast navigate this potential obstacle with incredible skill, and the script gained an intensity. Most of our cast has stage and film experience, so they drew on both. Also, on a sheerly practical level, it most likely would have been impossible to assemble this particular group of actors for a stage run, due to their schedule demands and other commitments. So while I miss having a live audience, and the thrill that can provide, I’m so grateful that these performances have been captured on film.

In the monologue The Blonde Cloud in “Coastal Elites,” Issa Rae portrays a former schoolmate of Ivanka, who calls her “Dracula with a blowout!” In your writing (especially in your feed), you focus more attention — more venom and more wit — on Ivanka than Donald. Why? Is there a strategy in that?
Trump has become a hopelessly easy and infuriating target. We know he’s a horrific tyrant. I’ve tried to approach his ongoing damage from an angle. Ivanka, who claims to empower women, has denied all of her father’s sexual assaults, and when asked about his war on women’s reproductive freedom, she smiles brightly, and refuses to answer, claiming such matters aren’t in her “portfolio.” She, along with her family members, have wholeheartedly supported Trump’s bigotry, lies and his many other crimes.
Ivanka has tried to remain in an untouchable bubble, which is insulting to all Americans. She’s constantly retweeting praise for herself, along with hopelessly privileged and out-of-touch advice: in the early days of the pandemic, she posted photos of herself making pillow forts with her kids at her Washington estate, and flew private to her family’s resorts. None of this is okay and a lot of it is ripe for satire. In Coastal Elites, I examined this situation through a character who’s every bit as rich and powerful as Ivanka, but her moral opposite. The brilliant Issa Rae plays Callie, who attended boarding school with Ivanka, but who’s been raised with a sense of responsibility and service. Their reunion, at the White House, raises the stakes for everyone involved.
The five monologues of “Coastal Elites”  each seem to represent different aspects of the new abnormal. Which are you most hopeful about?
I can be as anxious and pessimistic as anyone, but this can be self-defeating. I’ve been inspired by the millions of people, all over the world, who are figuring out work, family, love and basic survival right now. One of the Coastal Elite characters is a young nurse from Wyoming, superbly played by Kaitlyn Dever, who comes to New York to volunteer as a frontline worker, The courage of doctors, nurses and healthcare workers remains astonishing. Even in the early days, without any protective equipment, they worked around the clock, providing care and whenever possible, saving lives. This degree of sacrifice is both staggering and hopeful; these workers are an inspiration to all of us.
In addition, I wanted Coastal Elites to be a tribute to the sense of humor that’s helping everyone cope. Bette Midler plays Miriam, a public school teacher and hardcore New York liberal who’s very much a tribute to my Mom and her sisters. Their passion and wisecracks always gave me hope, and I see their spirit in so many people. Bette Midler herself gives me hope: she’s a legendary performer whose tweets are hilarious and outrageously committed to changing the world for the better. Theater artists always give me hope. No one pursues theater to make a fortune or have an easy life. People work in the theater because they can’t imagine doing anything else. The pandemic has made theater almost impossible, but the theater community has stayed in constant touch, Theater people don’t give up, and that’s hope itself.

UnOrdinary
HI! This Is a Romance Roleplay. It is set in a future where humanity has been corrupted to be "Equal" Everyone is born into a certain role in society. No one is allowed to be outstanding or creative. There is no famous status or influences, Everyone is set on the same status their entire life. In this time it's not allowed to do anything outside what your role is. People are allowed to still have a normal life as in having friends, going out, etc but they must stick to what they're told to do. Enter the "unordinary" this is the nickname given by those who stepped out of their set roles. Lead by an unknown leader, they are given secret hideouts or as they call it "Clubs" where they can express themselves and their art. It was a rapid success and many more have opened around all the other districts. The President of District 4 (will be explained more but this is where the story takes place) Is being held responsible since the "rebellion" Started in his district. He has spent years trying to find the leader only to fail. One of his final attempts was having her murdered. Although his henchmen failed the leader had to fake her death, and after that things were peaceful, but it didn't last too long. the story takes place half a year after he finds out that the leader is still alive, and he plans to use his son to get information, to finally end it. This idea is still in the works but I know how I want it to go. Looking for a Semi-Literate roleplayer, I'm OK with one-liners, if the story pace is slow but otherwise I try to give at least 5-7 Lines. Basic Character Bio required, SFW, I'm not the best at Smut but willing to give a try for the right person, but little to none as I don't want it to be clouded by smut every second. Read what I have below, and send me a message if interested, I only RP on Discord. Thanks! ----- “When did you first have a feeling that what you were born to do wasn’t exactly what you were planned to do?” A reporter asked as she sat at a small round table with another woman. the woman had short white hair and sharp Amber red eyes. She was someone who was a vivid believer in following her dreams and her face showed it as well as her confidence. Then the woman with the white hair began to speak “I was about six years old and my mother was walking me to my daily education lessons at the schoolhouse. And you know when you walk by the stores the holograms pop out at you playing ads they think will grab your attention yet give you a hint that what we as women can do are limited but they think to give us opportunities will keep the peace. Well, this one was an ad saying that women could now be chefs. Now news like that could excite common men or women. but at the time I didn’t know about the Rules then so I was completely confused. I thought you could grow up to be whatever you want like I’ve seen on Tv, but that wasn’t the case. Me being a child I said “Mother! I want to be a music player!” And she looked at me with such a disgusting disappointing expression. I was confused about why. I later found out it’s against the law to speak against what you were born to do. I was shocked. Us as people are born into certain things. You were born to put out fake news. I was born for something more than what they destined me to be, and I want to be a musician. And I am! No one is going to take that away from me. The white-haired woman smiled and the reporter shook her head. she hoped for a more interesting reaction from her. But it irritated her how calm she was “So why are you leading this rebellion? Why is your resistance so important? And what do you have to say to the President?” The reporter pressed for answers and the woman laughed and brushed her fingers through her hair. she wasn't phased by how angry the reporter was trying to make her. “You know what. I was thrown into this leadership position. No one had the guts to express themselves unless they were surrounded by my presence. I guess myself and my confidence helped others. I’ve never been afraid to do what I wanted. And I am. And I can proudly say I am one hundred percent happier than anyone in our four districts. More of us are standing together to fight this new society that has affected the way of life for decades. I’m not afraid of the president. And I never will be. I’m twenty-five years old now. [I] Won’t live forever. The president will eventually find me and end me. And that’s not my concern. My real concern is that people will stop living when I’m gone. I don’t want anyone going back to their old lives.” The reporter was silent for a second. She had to ask one last question. So she sighed softly and smiled. “Can we at least have a name for you?” The reporter asked being a little timid now. she didn't know how well the interview was going and how it would be received, even worse, she couldn't read the interviewee. The white-haired woman shrugged her shoulders and took only a second to come up with a fake name. “Of course. My name is Penelope.“ -Backstory- In this world, controlled by one man for decades, Man and woman are separated, the men are born to do hard labor, and skillful jobs and women are born to do the less skillful yet demanding jobs. But the man who ruled the world was corrupted by his ideals. That everyone should be equal. No one should shine brighter than others, no one should have a better social status than others. There were no famous status people in the world. Everything that was deemed “creative” and could make you stand out was removed. It was a plain and dull world, but people continued to live, and those who had creative outlooks and tried to stand against the society were immediately “removed”. Enter Penelope. At a young age, her mother quickly informed her how the world was. her mother told her to stay in her place, don't try to change anything, and live a quiet life. Penelope, on the other hand, refused to believe that the world was black and white. secretly she was learning how to play guitar and quickly found out she was passionate about it. she played every single day, knowing if she didn't, she would live her boring life. after high school graduation, her mother found out about her secret life and immediately removed herself from Penelope' s life and then come to find out her mother moved to another district. Penelope was heartbroken but she wasn't going to stop doing what she loved. Eventually, she opened the "creative club" a place where others like herself could be themselves without judgment, and it quickly grew, and a few years later, she opened many more secret places for in the other districts as well as she's, she unknowingly became their leader and was happy, the problem was she still had had her daily life, the one she was born to do. and although she dreaded it, she had no choice, she couldn't bring to much attention to her or else the president or anyone else could track her. she would do anything to keep everyone safe and it's what she planned to do. -Present-day- (Y/N) Was the son of the president, along with another brother you had. It was a lot of pressure. You had to be proper and live up to every expectation, but you always fell short to your brother. He seemed to always come up on top and there was just no competing with him. So your father called (Y/N) to his studies. You immediately went and sat in a chair in front of his desk, and he stared you down, the room felt tight but then lightened up as your father smiled. "My son, I have a task for you." He said pretty bluntly. He leaned back opening one if the desk drawers pulling out a huge file. He placed it in front of you and opened it. the first page had a picture of Penelope and all the information they had on her from her appearance to her blood type "She goes by Penelope but we know its not her real name. She is in her Mid-twenties, around your age I believe. We recently just found her bar where she performs and I want you to go tonight and befriend her to get information. I believe you can do this. I know you want redemption and if you can do this, it'll go a long way, not just for us but for mankind. we need to put an end to her defiance. That's all. Look over the papers and tonight befriend her. Don't come back till you have some worthy information" for the last part, he spoke coldly with no emotion. He always showed no remorse. (Y/N) was used to it by now, he was only worried about work and there was nothing you could about. All you could was do what he said. And you got to work studying the paperwork. (Y/N) sat down at the desk inside his capitol quarters. For unspecified reasons, his quarters had been moved off of the main level and into one of the lower levels. He dropped the thick portfolio onto his desk and switched on the lamp. Sighing, his heart racing, he opened the file. *Your career, your reputation, and my respect ride on your success in this task.* His father’s words spoken in his usual hollow, lifeless voice rang through his head. Clipped to the inside of the file were several photos of “Penelope.” Some were grainy surveillance photos and one was a still capture from an interview that she had done with one of the “hack” news agencies that were struggling for viewership. (Y/N) unclipped the photo and studied it more closely under the desk lamp. Penelope’s ability to avoid incarceration made him suspect that she was wearing a disguise. The woman was pretty, in an unconventional way. Her unusual choice of white pixie-cut hairstyle stood out the most. It turned his stomach, seeing someone trying so hard to be UnOrdinary. *Disgusting. Why would anyone try to stand out like this? It’s sacrilege.* Looking more closely, he attempted to discern any tell-tales regarding whether this was her actual hair or a wig. The clarity of the image wasn’t *that* good. - Setting the photos aside, he spent the rest of the day tirelessly going through the rest of the profile on the woman. There wasn’t much to go on, but at least it wasn’t anything. The key information was a list of the bars that she would turn into temporary “creative clubs” for a night of performances. (Y/N) wondered for a few moments where the information had come from before standing. “That’s unimportant for now,” he said aloud. He flipped back to the surveillance photos, some of which had been taken at one of the clubs. He studied them for several minutes before calling in one of his father’s assistants. He would need a cover if he were going to blend it, but he couldn’t be seen purchasing UnOrdinary clothing. His reputation was at stake, after all. A conversation later, and the assistant had gone to the seedy part of town to purchase the clothing, returning a couple of hours later. Once he returned, (Y/N) went about the business of changing his look. He darkened his hair, cut it into one of the more popular styles for the UnOrdinary crowd, changing it enough to look unique, and finally changed out his pale gray suit for the clothing his assistant had purchased. - (Y/N) looked into the mirror and hardly recognized himself. (y/n) looked back from the reflection, wearing dark pants, big heavy boots, a vibrant red shirt, and a black hooded trench coat over the top. Sunglasses finished off the look, sitting atop his spiked hair. Checking the time, he used one of the secret lower entrances to leave the capitol grounds. An assistant dropped him off 7 blocks from the designated bar. (Y/N) crept through an alleyway, coming out on one of the dingy streets that led to the bar. He tried not to let his nerves show as his eyes darted back and forth, certain that someone would spot him and identify him as an impostor, but it seemed like most people were more involved in their own conversations than they were looking for government spies. (Y/N) paid the bar’s cover fee and slipped inside, heart pounding as he was greeted by the loud music. *How could anyone listen to this! It’s just noise!* he thought as he approached the bar, scanning the crowd for that familiar white hair.

Gender and Sexuality Portfolio Post Three: Connection To Pop Culture
Tumblr media
The media is one of the best ways to see societies gender binaries in our society. For this assignment we are supposed to analyze a type of media and see how it contributes to retelling, rewriting, or revising the gender binary. I wanted to interpret how the media retells the gender binary on women’s weight and body image. Retelling the binary is a way the media “encourages you to conform to traditional, normative gender expectations by telling stories of men and women who meet those expectations” (Foss, Foss, & Domenico, p. 106). People are encouraged to become this gender binary because of the way it is idolized throughout the media. Although, retelling the gender binary can then be further analyzed into three different categorizes: preparation, prescription and reinscription (Foss, Foss, & Domenico, 2013). Preparation is the way of showing children and teens what their gender binary should look like when they become adults, prescription shows the extremes of how gender binaries should be, and reinscription is a method to get individuals to conform back to the true binary (Foss, Foss, & Domenico, 2013). For the purpose of body image in gender binaries, preparation will be the highest influencer throughout the film Mean Girls (2004).
Mean Girls (2004) is a movie about three friends trying to take down the most popular girl in their school. The main character, Cady, befriends the group of “mean girls” in order to gain their trust. As the movie progresses, Cady learns all of the things she needs to do in order to fit in with the clique and become popular. This movie portrays weight addiction and poor body image by constantly encouraging weight loss and diminishing body image throughout the film. This movie retells the binary by illustrating if you want to be popular you must be skinny- which can ultimately lead to negative eating disorder responses.
The first scene I will talk about is how Cady tricks Regina into eating “healthy” bars to encourage her to lose weight. This scene began because Cady and her friend were trying to pull tricks on Regina to make her look foolish, but regardless of what they did, everyone would follow and accept what she was wearing or doing. They decided that the only thing that would truly bother her is her weight because she has the perfect body shape. This, from the start, was one way that that this scene retold the binary. The girls decided that making Regina “fat” was the only way to make her upset because being chubby is the only thing that would make people not like her. After Regina began to gain weight from the bars, she went to check on her Spring Fling dress she reserved from a store called 1,3,5 and could not fit into the dress. When the girls were saying they couldn’t get the dress to zip up, she snipped at them saying “it’s a five”, and the other girl said “okay there must be some kind of mistake” and ran to check the size (0:48:55-0:49:40). This clearly portrayed that being anything bigger than a five in unacceptable if you want to be popular. This also concluded that anyone who is a five is overweight because of the way her friends reacted to her dress size. This illustrates the binary by showing that being skinny is one of the only ways people will accept you as a person and girls must focus on losing weight all of the time. This prepares girls to believe that their biggest “choices are based on beauty and appearance of women” (Foss, Foss, & Domenico, 109). This retelling of binary could potentially trigger girls to believe that anything other than a 1,3 or 5 are too big of sizes and encourages girl to only be those sizes- resulting in an eating disorder or poor body image.
The second scene that was brought to my attention was the lunch room scene. The clique of girls would not let Regina, the most popular girl in high school, sit with them because she was wearing sweatpants and it was Monday. The girls said, “you’re wearing sweatpants and that’s against the rules so you can’t sit with us” and Regina responded “sweatpants are all that fit me right now” (0:53:45-0:54:39). After that, she looked for everyone for their approval for her to continue sitting with them, but they all kept their heads down. After that Regina left in a storm and bumped into a girl on her way out. When she bumped into the girl she got food all over her shirt and the other girl yelled “watch where you’re going fat ass” and the entire cafeteria began to make fun of her and laugh (0:53:45-0:54:39). This scene is a great example of retelling a binary. For one, she is told that she cannot sit with her friends because she is wearing the wrong clothes, regardless if they are the only clothes that fit her. This could lead people to interpret that weight is more important than good friends so girls must stay skinny if they want to have a lot of friends. Second, the comment made by the random girl in her school and the reaction by her peers showed that being fat is not allowed. That being said, if someone were to see this movie and take it seriously, they would believe that being a girl means there is no room for becoming fat or everyone will make fun of you and you will not be able to sit with your friends. This was a way of showing preparation of a gender binary because it infers the “kind of world in which [girls] will live as adults and how important they will be in the world” (Foss, Foss, & Domenico, 108). In this case, they are saying if they want to be a popular, they must be able to fit into the correct clothes. The consequences of this retelling of a binary could lead individuals to become extremely obsessed with weight in order to stay popular or within societies norms.
The last way Mean Girls (2004) portrayed body image was by constantly criticizing their bodies with one another. In this scene, one of the girls started speaking about how her “hips are huge”, then another girl jumped in and said “please I hate my calves”, and the last girl stated that “[she has] man shoulders” (0:19:25-0:19:54). This is a direct example of the gender binary showing that girls are supposed to constantly body shame themselves and see multiple flaws on their bodies. After hearing a couple more complaints about the girls bodies the camera focused on Cady and allowed the audience to hear what she was thinking. In her head she said “I used to think there was just fat and skinny. Now I learned there can be a lot wrong with your body” (0:19:25-0:19:54). This scene helped give an excellent example of what could happen if girls took this binary seriously. Ultimately, this scene concluded that if you want to fit in with your friends, you must body shame because that is what normal girls do. This gender binary can lead girls to become extremely self conscious of their bodies. The last part of this clip ended with the girls waiting for Cady to say something negative about her body. Cady did not know how to respond so she said that “she has bad breath in the morning” (0:19:25-0:19:54). The girls looked at her like she was crazy and rolled their eyes showing their disapproval of her body shaming the wrong way. This scene helped retell the binary by preparing “girls...models...to use for growing into adulthood” (Foss, Foss, & Domenico, 108). These binary models portray that girls must hate their body in not just one way but several ways and constantly work to perfect it. Retelling the gender binary in this way could drive girls to body shame and believe that it is normal to hate their bodies. When that happens, girls come extremely susceptible to eating disorders because they are constantly trying to perfect their bodies.
Analyzing Mean Girls (2004) encouraged me to see the media through a different perspective. This movie nails the idea that if you want to be accepted by society you must be skinny to sit with friend, fit into extremely small sizes and body shame yourself constantly. None the less, these three scenes were just a small portion of the examples that showed the retelling binary focused on weight. Although this movie was created as a comedy, it instills the extremes of what the most popular girls should be doing and could lead to serious consequences in teenage girls. After educating myself on how the media retells, revieses, and rewrites binary I am now more sceptical to concepts brought up throughout the media.

5 Vital Functions That Make Actual Estate Investing Profitable
Cheap Real Estate Leads Each and every now and then individuals making an attempt to make up their minds exactly where to place their funds question me if real estate ventures are far more or significantly less rewarding, in comparison to other companies possibilities close to. My response is always that apart from its prospective for yielding significant profits, investing in real estate often confers extended terms rewards. I go over 5 this sort of advantages beneath: one. You Can Refurbish (to Enhance the Value of) Actual Estate Right after you purchase a stock, you hold it for a period of time and with any luck , offer it for a profit. The accomplishment of the inventory relies upon on organization management and their corporate good results, which is out of your control. Not like other conventional investment devices, like stocks, for occasion, whose charge of returns, depend on third get-togethers (e.g. company management), true estate investments are immediately underneath your handle. Even although you will not be in a position to management adjustments that may possibly occur in demographic and economic facets, or impact of mother nature induced changes, there are several other factors that you can handle, to increase the returns on your expense in it. Examples contain facets relating to introducing repairs, or enhancements/enhancements to the actual physical property and tenants you let to stay in it. If you do it appropriate, the worth of your investment will develop, ensuing in improved prosperity for you. two. Genuine Estate Investing, When Done Appropriate, is Verified to be Lucrative Even In the course of a Economic downturn (like the 1 we are in correct now) It has on a number of occasions, been used to result a bail out, from economic setbacks, these kinds of as people that numerous have knowledgeable during the economic downturn happening in Nigeria nowadays. A considerable number of consumers have confided in me that thanks to the existing financial situation, they are not certain of profitable channels to invest their funds. Some of them are accomplished with bonds and treasury expenses, but are in dire need to have of a new expense. We had comprehensive discussions, and primarily based on my experience as a real estate consultant, I recommended landed home investment decision, as the most ideal and safe alternative channel of expenditure. This is since, even if all companies crumble, land will constantly value greatly. Then to generate my stage property, I ended by sharing the following apt quote, by a former American president: "Genuine estate can not be lost, nor carried absent, managed with affordable care, it's about the safest investment in the world" - Franklin Roosevelt. Not astonishingly, the shopper chose to just take my suggestions - and signed up: it was the clear, widespread perception issue to do! 3. Real Estate Investments Are Immune to Inflation In other terms, investing your money in possession of feasible actual estate can protect you from the harsh results that inflation normally has on other traditional investments. This is because the worth of actual estate normally tends to increase in constructive correlation with inflationary pressures. This is why house values and rental rates go up with climbing inflation. The character of genuine estate, as a result affords homeowners the exclusive edge of becoming capable to adjust the charges they supply, to match inflation. Monthly rents for case in point can be elevated to compensate for inflation - thus supplying a cushion effect in opposition to inflation induced losses that other monetary investments suffer. four. True Estate is Uniquely for Currently being Universally Satisfactory as Collateral, In direction of Securing Funding from Financial institutions Today, true estate in kind of possibly creating or lands, with correct titles (i.e. Certificate of Occupancy - aka "C of O") is the most acknowledged and recognized type of collateral in Nigeria - and some other elements of the world. It has the unique function of getting in a position to safeguard the passions of each the borrower and the financial institution (that is carrying out the lending), so that funds can be introduced i.e. after due verification, and terms and conditions are agreed. This is a single of the crucial rewards a non-public C of O has in excess of the worldwide C of O, since the former (i.e. personal C of O) is what will be essential by the intending borrower, in the event of any long term fiscal dealings with lender in Nigeria. five. Genuine Estate Investing Makes it possible for Use of Other People's Money In other phrases, you can do it even if you do not have sufficient money. You just want to know how. This is feasible due to the fact genuine estate is bodily home or what is known as a hard asset. That is an attribute that makes it appealing to financiers i.e. men and women with cash to make investments. This is why numerous times actual estate goods are purchased with personal debt - in contrast to standard expense goods like stocks which are NOT tangible, and as a result perceived as getting much more dangerous to spend in. So real estate investment can be accomplished using cash or mortgage financing. In the latter circumstance, payments can be so arranged to permit payment of low initial sums, provided by you or a inclined third get together. People payments will be happening on landed property which will carry on rising in worth through the length of this sort of payments - and certainly outside of. That even more conjures up self confidence in the minds of people funding the acquisition, that their expenditure is protected. 2X True Estate Leads is a leading genuine estate guide generation system. EXPOSED-Joel Francis Tatu-D.R.C-ANGEL URBET’S SPIRITUAL SON
Joel Francis Tatu
Born in Kinshasa in the DRC, the so-called prophet Joel Francis Tatu is one of the most infamous false prophets in Africa of the end of time with all sorts of pompous titles such as composer, cantor, lecturer and mentor. Under a seemingly jovial boil and a captivating presence, although visibly effeminate, its physique being sanded and illuminated by excessive cosmetic body care (to the point of making jealous women) and by an accentuated taste for the suits and other clothes of the last cry , Hides an abominable sorcerer, expert in magical arts (more precisely the demonic energies of the martial art  Tai Chi-Chuan )  by which he simulates pseudo cures and deliverances .
One of his very recent spiritual hobbies is to amaze the crowds with magic tricks that demons help it operate, including the miraculous appearance of the banknotes in the portfolios, the supernatural download units in mobile phones or the Mystical transfer of money into bank accounts .
Details
Title: Prophet Church: Founder of the Apostolic and Prophetic Mission for Revival (MAPR) Headquarters : Kinshasa Subsidiaries: Cape Town in South Africa and London in Great Britain Related pastors:  Uebert Angel  (spiritual father), Myles Munroe, Prophet Djimi Mbaya of the MAPR - his accolite (spiritual son)
Former musician rapper, he would have received his first name Joel in his room during a visit by an "angel" (fallen).
He was born and formed "spiritually" under the apostolic authority of the couple Mwamba Mbuyi and Marcel Bbopeya within the International Ministry Deborah Kinshasa DRC. He would have received the call to the ministry by a prophetic word and by imposition of the hands of the apostle Freddy Decoster (who is an abominable false wizard sorcerer, crook and impostor) of the Protestant Baptist Church of Honfleur in France.
It was through the visit of an "angel" (of darkness), that he would have received the revelation of his ministry in 2004.
He is currently president of evangelical fraud organizations such as Joel Francis TATU Ministries, namely JFTMinistries and Apostolic and Prophetic Mission for Revival or MAPR, which take many in perdition and captivate and misappropriate unsettled people. This individual who pretends to be the only true prophet, and denounces the "others" as false pastors, is actually a true Satanist, blinded and possessed by the love of money and the glory of the world. He is one of the pastors who use occult powers, magnetism to simulate miracles, deliverances and healings.
Showing a narcissism (deep love for his own person) exacerbated, this apostle of Mamon has a pronounced taste for body care with suitcases custom-made and costing excessively expensive. He does not skimp on the means (the tithes of his flock) to look after his appearance and his image.
Tatu currently resides in Bujumbura, where he is the assistant pastor of "Apostle" Paul Gitwaza at the Zion Temple Celebration Center in Bujumbura.
His own words
"Preaching the gospel does not mean preaching Jesus, it means preaching the word of Jesus. I can connect to your mind and prophesy about you. (This is a direct admission on his part of the practice of telepathy and mental control). "
"I was in Bujumbura, I came to Kinshasa without taking the plane! Where is the problem ? I go out a lot, I go out all the time, I go out easily this is not a problem. Where is the problem? Is that the expression out of his body? Have you never prayed and seen that you are somewhere? I do not speak of astral travel, I was an occultist and I know these things well, I have already done these things. (This is proof that we are dealing with a sorcerer who subtly and maliciously introduces the theories of astral travel to get out of the body)
His words (continued)
"Our goal is to enable Christians to reach another spiritual dimension than they are today.
We want to show you (Christians) how you can activate the ministry of angels with you, how you can put the angels in motion around you (the abominable cult of angels, see the show on William Branham).
We are spirit, we have a soul and we are in a body, you can not understand the spiritual world if you do not understand that you are initially spiritual, as much as you know your body, your soul you must also know Your spirit. (He says who he really is: a spirit).
When I preach the message on the 7 mountains, on the 7 strategic sectors of society that Christians must influence: the mountain of education to be influenced, the mountain of the media, the mountain of celebration, the mountain of The economy, the mountain of the family and so many others; When we prepare Christians to say today that you are going to be leading the government, we prepare you to be good politicians and good citizens, there you will influence politics with the values of the kingdom (which disciple of Jesus Christ preached such a gospel in the Bible?).
We Christians are beyond spirituality, we are of divinity, it is written in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth: the earth is for men, the heavens are for those who sail in the heavens, But we are of the dimension of divinity.
Christians must be taught to develop their minds and to know how to work with the spiritual world that is at their disposal.
If we want to see the revival, there are several principles ... we must learn to recognize the instruments of revival, whenever God sends a movement, a reform, a change, a revival, God always arouses the instruments of awakening. There is no awakening without waking instruments, if you want to live the awakening, you must recognize the instruments that God wants to use for this awakening. If you accept these instruments, you will see this awakening manifested, if you reject these instruments, you may be waiting for another cycle of 7 years, for some they waited 20 years later for God to raise men of the Same breed. If you accept your David, you will see your Goliath fall, but if you master and reject your David, you will be influenced by Goliath. If you accept the young Joseph, tomorrow beyond the temple you will not die of starvation, but if you kill your Jospeh you will die of hunger tomorrow. Why does God like to choose someone? Because God is sovereign his choice is his choice, he asks no one's advice when he wants to choose someone. When you accept these instruments, you accept the alarm clock, when you reject these instruments, you reject your alarm clock.
All souls have the same value before God, but not all souls have the same strategic value, we are all redeemed by God, but we do not have the same look of God because there are people In whom God is very much invested, because he knows that by them the others will be saved; And when God begins to raise them to send an awakening, the people around them must have sensitivity to recognize that this man, this woman is an instrument of revival.
In an interview:

It pleased god as a prophet and apostle that I could father spiritual daughters and sons who have continued to direct the ministry as much in the Congo as in Cap-town and everywhere else.
The holy spirit is much more than a doctrine for me, the very object of pneumatology in theology, in which one studies the person of the mind, the work of the mind, the nature of the mind, Fruit of the spirit, the characters of the spirit, for me the holy spirit is a person, a friend, is someone very close to me, whom I consult at all stages of life (what blasphemy Holy Spirit! It is rather a familiar spirit that accompanies Tatu in his occult adventures).
By the grace of God, I will have the Lord Jesus more than five times in front, as far as I see you like this. (The same spirit familiar in manifestation) ".
