#and then the fucking BEAT ON THE PRECHORUS

the entire essay I could write about the background vocals in terrible man. you don't understand
#onlyoneof#why do you think that first beat drop at the first chorus hits so hard. dude#that's the only spot in the song that I can find where the background vocals completely disappear#also the chorus is the only part of the song where the beat is completely clear and not muddy#there are 2 other spots in the verses that has a bit of the chorus beat too but it's not *as* clear as in the chorus#god when that motto motto tsunaide mou uso demo ii kara furetete HITS. it hits#this song is so insanely good and for no fucking reason I could write an essay about it. maybe I should#the intro has that . instrument that I can't name in it and then the verse has that too but with the beat from the chorus#and then the prechorus is all wahhhwoohohhf floaty. it's floaty airy breathy no clear beat#AND THEN THE. CHORUS HITS and man. uifkvfjvnfjjvjfjvbvfj yeah#also the way rie sings mimi kara karada kills me every time. unrelated to the discussion around instrumentals but#THE BACKGROUND VOCALS IN THE 2ND CHORUS BTW#the woaaahhh that continues into wooohooohh in the chorus...#the ohoohhh ohooooh#dude? listen to hidoi otoko by onlyoneof. that's what I'm saying here#really listen#put it on repeat all day and notice every little instrumental and background vocal detail in it. maybe then you'll be normal#cuz I sure am. so normal and regular about this song#GOD it's so good#sorry if you don't get it. I'm right#the only crime this song commits is being too short#the ohh woahh in the first prechorus. that part is different in the korean version of the song and that one little part is why I prefer the#japanese version of the song. literally just one woahh background vocal is what makes me heavily favor this version. lol#me when I'm so normal about my favorite background vocal parts of a song. is that even a thing it is now. it is to me

HOT TO GO! (k.hj)
Tumblr media
pairing: non idol!hongjoong + afab!reader
rating: mature (18+) minors dni!
a/n: i got carried away and wrote full smut, sorry not sorry hehehe
trafoamp series
cw: smut, long leadup, boyfriend!hongjoong, dancing/clubbing, song lyrics incorporated (the song plays at the club), mention of p in v at first, relating to the lyrics, making out, quickie, public sex (fucking in a club bathroom), unprotected sex & pull out method (be safe irl!), ‘emergency lube’ used, joong is a panty thief, one singular spank, more sex foreshadowed
it was a hot saturday night when the new hottie you’ve been seeing casually, kim hongjoong, showed up to your place to take you out to the club for some dancing. he looked even more irresistible tonight than ever, his blonde hair pushed back, his silk button up with the buttons opened at the top, showing off his pecs. he also wore some slacks and what looked to be an overpriced belt, which you would normally have poked fun at him for, but tonight it really tied his look together.
you joined him in the lyft that waited for you both outside your apartment, and you sat together in the backseat. he looked hot, and you looked hot, we’re gonna be the hottest couple in the club tonight, for sure you thought to yourself. as you arrived to the club you guys waited in line to have your ids checked, before walking in to the dim club lights, both of your groups of friends were there, but tonight was about you two, your friends could wait.
you both made it out on the floor, and began dancing amongst yourselves. it was not before the perfect song for the moment came on: hot to go! by chappell roan. as the intro played:
five six, five six seven eight!
you grabbed his hand as the beat began. you moved to the middle of the dance floor as the lyrics started and said:
i could be the one or your new addiction
it’s all in my head, but i want nonfiction
you two began freely moving your bodies together to the beat. as the lyrics went on, you kept on moving, working up the sweat due to the heat of the club and the sweaty bodies around you. you were thinking how perfect this moment was, the song and your ridiculously hot dance partner/boyfriend all fitting together perfectly as the song continued:
baby do you like this beat?
i made it so you’d dance with me
it’s like a hundred ninety-nine degrees
when you’re doing it with me, doing it with me
it was indeed perfect, because it did feel like it was hotter than hell in the club on the crowded dance floor. it was all the more hot because you had hongjoong at your side. the song continued to the chorus:
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
you can take me hot to go
H-O-T-T-O-G-O
you can take me hot to go
you kept on dancing with him, watching him move his body alongside yours, getting all sweaty, was making you think about how he’d look on top of you, getting sweaty like this while moving his body in tandem with yours like on the dance floor, but instead, fucking your brains out. the second verse went on:
well i woke up alone, staring at the ceiling
i try not to care, but it hurts my feelings
you don’t have to stare, come here, get with it
no one’s touched me there in a damn hot minute
you reflected on the lyrics as you danced, thinking about how you could relate, you haven’t been touched anywhere in a hot minute, and you wanted hongjoong badly now, after this song was over, you knew exactly what to do. the song went on, and distracted you from your thoughts:
and baby don’t you like this beat?
i made it so you’d sleep with me
it’s like a hundred ninety-nine degrees
when you’re doing it with me, doing it with me
the song continued to it’s catchy prechorus and chorus, eventually finishing, you felt the urge pull hongjoong into the club bathroom and to fucking, which you just happened to do. you took his hand and dragged him quickly into the biggest stall in the women’s bathroom before making out with him. he was caught off guard, but not hesitating, as you moved this on and pulled away from the kiss.
“i need you so badly” you finally say, your voice barely above a whisper. he just chuckled, “i need you too” he said, before his hands began to feel you up and pull the bottom of your dress up. you grabbed your emergency travel sized bottle of lube from your bag and pulled down his zipper and took out his cock before putting some lube onto it.
he then removed your panties before slipping them into his pocket. you smiled at his dirty action and bent over the toilet and held onto the lid for him to insert himself into you. as he did so, you could hear the slight sound of the club music from outside the bathroom. he thrust into you from behind, his hips snapping against your ass, causing him to groan at the recoil of your ass against him. he kept thrusting, both of your breathing getting heavier as you both began to sweat.
he held onto your hips and kept a steady rhythm of thrusts, him groaning quietly and you moaning in a hushed tone. as you both reached your orgasms, you felt like your body was on fire, you never did anything this risky before, you felt bad, but in the best way possible. he kept fucking into you, both of you wishing no one would walk in as you both chased your upcoming releases.
your orgasms weren’t too eventful, they hit you both at about the same time, him making you cum first before he pulled out and came on your ass. he groaned an almost inaudible “fuck” as he came. after you came down from your highs, he grabbed a large wad of toilet paper and wiped down your ass, giving it a slight tap after doing so. he chuckled as you pulled your dress down and he put his dick away.
you kissed him on the cheek as you both regulated yourselves, you both made a dash out of the bathroom and back into the dimly lit club, hand in hand. you guys hid in the corner to order a lyft back to your apartment, his arm around your waist. you knew there would be more sex to come when you got back to your place.

exo - exist review
i just wanna start by saying that this comeback is the highlight of my year already. i did have high expectations because after all, this is exo and their discography is easily at the top of the entire industry... and for groups that debuted over a decade ago they're one of the last still standing, so after a 4 year old hiatus the expectations were high to say the least. did they manage to meet them? let's find out!
the title track deserves a whole paragraph so:
cream soda - a high paced r&b pop song with a luscious instrumental and a collection of high notes that flex the strengths of the group. it definitely packs a punch and i think it would benefit from getting a slower intro but even so, the song doesn't disappoint. it kinda reminds me of a maroon 5 song during their golden years and i think it's the perfect balance of "grown men r&b" and playfulness (coupled with less than subtle sexual innuendos about popping like a soda bottle this is a great evolution for exo, who have been known to always make pussy popping music but have struggled to shed the high school boys image sm is so fixated on giving them). rating: 9/10
regret it - literally straight out of the pcy1 vault and you can't convince me otherwise. soooo happy to hear an r&b jam straight out of the 90s since that is literally exo's blueprint. i love the production on this track because it has enough elements to keep it interesting and the chorus is super catchy. chanyeol takes the crown for me for obvious biased reasons but i love kyungsoo and jongdae's runs in this. rating: 10/10
hear me out - sounds much better like this. like now i get 100% the reasoning behind this song and the style it has. it's really such a chill vibe and a welcome breather after the one two punch of the previous songs. i feel like the prechorus and post chorus of this song could have been amped up way more and a breakdown for the bridge would've made it ten times more fun tho. rating: 9/10
random observation i noticed: the resting silences between songs are a tad too short for my liking. we need to let this marinate and sometimes it does feel like the album is sprinting towards the end.
private party - chanyeol opening the song AS HE FUCKING SHOULD. this beat is nasty... it's the perfect combination of exo's r&b sultry side and a hot sexy beat to shake ass to. it's just fun and good and takes you on a sonic ride from start to finish. i did expect the weeknd vibes from the title alone but i'm glad with the result here. rating: 10/10
cinderella - oh marz. oh you.... i knew exactly what the beat drop was gonna sound like from the second the song started and i'm not mad about it! this is another old school r&b infused serenade song while giving it a fresh modern style with the synth arrangements. taking a point off just because the mixing is too compressed and the synth takes over the landscape in an overbearing way (happens all the time with flume too so i get it but i feel like this could've been prevented here). rating: 9/10
no makeup - okay so the whore music run of this album from private party to no makeup is insane. we get it. these men fuck. they made sure to let us know they're in their 30s and it was about DAMN time. that post that's like they melted their dick and balls into a flashdrive and fucked the console in the recording studio.... yeah. the background harmonies are TOP TIER too but i didn't expect anything less from exo. props to jongdae, minseok and chanyeol cause they were working overtime layering these vocals. rating: 10/10
love fool - deadass was expecting this to be the slower snoozefest of the album... but exo are intent on making every track off this album COUNT. this is such a classic exo jam... every element of this song works in their favor. great melody, great instrumentals, great topline, great chorus. this is PURE quintessential exo. rating: 10/10
another day - this is good song! a great song even. my notes for this one just say "good song. really like it" it's just not something that stuck out to me enough to analyze it further. i think that's fine. the layering of vocals is once again great. i don't love the topline specially for the chorus (feels super nct 127 past their peak) but it's still a good song. rating: 8/10
let me in - this is their boyz ii men serve of the year. perfect closer. perfect slow ballad and i'm not a fan of those in the first place. definitely the vocal highlight of the album. that's all i can say. exo did it once again kids. rating: 9/10

top 5 perfumes, top 5 makeup products & top 5 songs you would play to bracha… 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🤭💘
ouhhh i haven’t actually gotten to smell very many perfumes that i liked 😔 i truly mostly don’t like anything (at least out of the things i’ve gotten to smell which is all like. drugstore available stuff like no niche perfumery things which i rly do want to get into!) howeverrr… i do have some that i like:
1. killian angel’s share (i WILL buy this for myself.. one day 🧿)
2. givenchy l’interdit rouge
3. d&g the only one = ysl libre intense
4. tom ford black orchid
5. fuckass lush honey i washed the kids LMFAO i really love it it’s my after-shower scent, doesn’t smell incredible upon first spritz but it develops into this gorgeous subtly sweet scent that i looove to go to sleep with. same goes for lush twilight but it’s a lavender scent so you’d hate it kfhskkd
makeup products well 🤭 i WOULD usually put l’oreal 24h matte foundation here prob as number one however i haven’t worn foundation in almost a full year now so!
1. fenty beauty gloss bombs yes they’re incredible yes they’re worth it. every single cent. i get one every time i travel somewhere w a Sephora LMAO i currently have fenty glow & fu$$y currently 💋
2. maybelline lifter gloss (currently own 5 tubes (moon, 2x silk, topaz, red flag and looking to get more i need one in every bag at every occasion. way cheaper but also way less thick/long lasting version of fenty)
3. maxfactor 2000 calories mascara in waterproof listen no matter how i flip it no matter which mascara i try (ive tried too faced, benefit, ysl, dior and soooo fawking ON) this one is just IT. the only one with such good separation and holding up a curl and lasting the entire day. my main girl always
4. nudestix! i have 3 shades rn (naughty n spice, bondi bae, in the nude) i use them depending on my mood for the day as blush & bronzer and they give such a beautiful sunkissed vibe i love them sm. longwearing too
5. maybelline age rewind (fuck you in advance teo) concealer in shade 5 brightener it’s so good stays all day doesn’t crease mwaaah mwah i also use it for spot concealing if i get spots 😌 gorgeous & cheap you gotta love it
BEST FOR LAST…. literally where do i beginnnn bang chan answer my calls i need you to HEAR my vision. this is just going to be off the top of my head bc if i really got out my playlists and started to get into this i’d need to quit my job to focus on this alone 🙏🏼
1. periferija by voyage & nucci i have already gone ON abt this and i want to show this to them with super selfish intent like to talk them into doing something similar bc i just really really truly need chan and changbin going STUPID on a balkan beat it’s actually crucial to me. lyrics gotta be in a similar vein too A JA JAK KAO TERIJER i know you know. these fits bc you KNOW i need the tank top + chain combo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. nad****a by zera oh listen this is again selfish of me bc i have this VISION of all of them doing this and ofc felix starts the song what with ‘dragon’ being in the meaning of his name and it’s gotta be a super dynamically shot video kinda like aespa supernova only at the club. felix insane face to voice ratio has to shock your system within the first 5 seconds of a song for it to truly HIT so he goes ‘ko zmaj bebo ja sam tako nadrkana’ [slaps the camera away from himself] ‘oko nas samo momci s lošim navikama’ [an almost 360 spin of the camera wherein you see bracha and then it gets to hyunjin who gets the next line] ‘ceo splav noćas popunjen je barbikama’ [zoom out to see all of danceracha aka my pretty dollface racha w hyunjin in the middle] i could go on. what i personally would change abt the song though is instead of the prechorus/verses i would do a lot of rapping i know my bracha would devour the track i am 100000% sure of it. the one other line i would NEED to keep is chan doing ‘gde god dođem imam pratnju kao predsednik’ ofc coupled w a shot of them all behind him 😌 uhm can you tell this was ALL i thought abt on todays walk LMFAOOOO i need to be like. sedated
3. keeping it SHORT NOW PROMISEEE i just gotta show nyokosuzi to my channieeeeeee i know he’d love it i know he’d relate jebeni lider etc you know how it goes i would LOVE to see his flustered face LMFAO you know how he writes the most suggestive nastiest lyrics and then pretends he doesn’t know shit. Yes exactly
4. opanci - nucci LOOK the nasty fucking tone of voice this man has just screams changbin to me and the mix of traditional singing w the rap strikes a chord to me (loš momak by nikolija another good example) i just think they’d both love it anddd sound so good on the track it’s a win win situation
5. a classic.. GLUH I NIJEM ZBOG NJE i can’t explain to you how much i want a bouncy beat from chan i know he’s got it in him ive heard what he can do. if they WANT to be pathetic i neeeeed ‘bacam ruže sto i jednu ružu na kučku bez duše ❤️‍🩹’ energy over a delicious beat and not fuckass lose my breath with underwhelming vocals type pathetic shit (+ bonus something like Divljam w the bouncy beat and added balkan spice in the instrumental PLUSS kako gleda me ko vučica vuka no no now ive said too much.)

ok full wayv album thoughts
blame it on my youth - the chorus is annoying the first time it hits but the rest of the song is SO GOOD..... the running synth in the back is so good and the bridge is INSANE..... and it sounds SO CHINESE like, it sounds exactly like what's popular in c-pop now. they were right -- this doesn't sound like old wayv at all, and i miss old wayv, but i'm not gonna lie. i love wayv 2.0 😰 they can stay, i guess
poppin' love - ok first of all. the signature sm entertainment buzz sound at the start of this song scared me so bad. but also WHEN YOU LOOKIN AT ME IM SO OFF MY FACE hell yeah every wayv album needs a cuntenserven hornysad song
ain't no thang - FUN..... HIGH ENERGY....... I NEED TO INJECT THIS SONG INTO MY BRAIN AND THAT MIGHT FIX ME
no one but you - probably my least favorite off the album, a little boring but still very enjoyable and cute. reminds me of something that'd be on exo's xoxo album.
invincible - first of all this song is so fun and second of all, we LOVE a fuck you song ... this is a song that can make me believe that wayv is not irrevocably fucked under sm entertainment <3
rodeo - cock music.... music to fuck and fight to.... beat goes hard, the producers knew the rapping would be bad so the made every other part of the song insane to make up for it. i thought i was gonna have a heart attack and die the first time the beat dropped. i haven't watched any of their promotional programs yet but i can't imagine how they're gonna convince me that this song isn't about riding dick.
moonlight - this is my favorite song off the album, and it has the most wayv 1.0 feel. it's got their signature sweeping orchestral instrumental and the dramatic prechorus to the vocal bridge w/ the xiao dejun signature belting. this would have kicked ass as a title track. from the very first millisecond this sounds like classic wayv
lighthouse - among my mutuals i am a noted ballad apologist... and i don't usually like wayv ballads (i hated face to face with a passion and similarly couldn't stand horizon) but this is good.... ballad-haters might quibble and say that all ballads are the same/boring, but i think this one doesn't fall into the low-energy pit that their others do. the chorus is super strong and memorable, and i can see myself reaching for this all the time. like, no ballads are high-energy, but this one has momentum!!
be alright - the obligatory feel-good concert closer of every nct album is the bane of my existence but i actually vibe w this one... the bass line is cute and bouncy and the chorus has those wayv orchestral instrumentals. i'm honestly so relieved that be alright was good, because it was potentially going to be the weakest link, as the feel-good closer always is, but yeah..... closing the loop and making this into a true no-skip album for me <3

hometown hypocrisy
and the bloods beating down in the city tonight and no-one will ever sympathize with our plight try to get up, but we just fall down trying to escape this damn hometown
and we got fires burning in our souls and the scars to prove it, what do you know but the rains putting us out drowning our sparks and our shouts
and the fogs setting in rain against my skin and the sky's beating me down wandering my hometown and the roads gotten twisted the old life's gone, i missed it guess it is true, you can never go home again
and the bloods beating down in the city tonight and no-one will ever sympathize with our plight try to get up, but we just fall down trying to escape this damn hometown
and blood seeping through our clothes violence begets violence, don't ya know but these fists are my hometown pride gritted teeth and bloodshot eyes
and the fogs setting in rain against my skin and the sky's beating me down wandering my hometown and the roads gotten twisted the old life's gone, i missed it guess it is true, you can never go home again
'and the bloods beating down' is the 2nd chorus/prechorus [look i changed the structure but im not editing my analysis i dont want it to get longer]
'and the fogs setting in' is the [main]chorus [planned to use a diffrent tone to musicaly distinguish it from teh verses and pre/2nd chorus][is in italics]
and 'we got fires' is teh 1st verse and 'blood seeping thru our clothes' is the second
NOTE: should be spoken or sung for optimal beat with contractions, but for readability has been mostly uncontracted. also idk how to spell what do you know contracted right.
the chorus is much later in the singers life than the pre chorus & the two verses, the hypocrisy is that the singer wants to both escape and go back to his hometown.
the younger singer always uses plural, to symbolize community, until 'these fists are my hometown pride' almost at the end. he refutes the cycle of violence by owning his violence as part of himself- his link to his hometown.
in addition, he has become the active perpetrator of violence, [previous references were 'we all fall down' [something else to him] and 'we got the scars to prove it' which is implied to be violence perpetrated unknowingly to each other because of 'fires burning in our souls'- when they get close, they hurt each other unintentionally] he now links his sense of self to violence, and thus when he loses his ability to do violence, he loses his self, and his link to his hometown, becoming the older singer
but by doing this he also will inevitably refute his hometown, by linking it intrinsically to violence, becoming the older singer who sings the chorus when he can no longer have that link to his self or his hometown because he can no longer do violence [his inability shown by him being 'beaten down' by the rain/oppressive atmosphere], i did want to expand on this, writing more verses to show the fall and how he ended up as the chorus person but it didnt work. heres the scrapped third verse
but soon those fists turned weak what do you know? you aint at your peak stress and violence aint good for your heart and you find that your bodys now falling apart
it can also be seen as by growing up to become a perpetrator and someone with power, he is now distant from his people and community, the solidarity is formed from their shared victimhood so when he steps out of that/rejects it, he loses the community [also becoming part of the violent cycle means getting rejected] [also the chorus says 'twisted road' we dont know what happened to make him fall, thats up to the readers interpretation] [transmasc journey of realizing your masculinity then becoming ostracised][or disability]
"guess its true, you can never go home again" is the only exception to the rhyming scheme, and it gives it emphasis, it was more noticeable before the chorus was squished together [previously each half line was its own line until 'guess its true'] fuck it it can take up space on yalls dashboards its getting split again
'bloodshot eyes' can be interpreted many different ways, from crying to injury to rage, each suggesting different meanings and affecting the text in diffrent ways

no one will understand how truly obsessed i am with the pre-chorus of home;run, like i am home;run's number one fan no one can beat me. (idt i've ever mentioned it here but i'm a bit of a music nerd. i don't like music theory but the knowledge is there so here's a small rant) THE FUCKING CHORD PROGRESSION IN THE PRE CHORUS DRIVES ME FUCKING INSANE LIKE that has got to be one of my favorite chord progressions ever like it's fucking gorgeous AND ON TOP OF THAT THE FUCKING DRUMSET i love a simple rhythm from the ride cymbal HELLO. and then that subtle build with the ride cymbal and the brush on the snare into the chorus PLSKSKSK oh my god and that ascending bass in the chorus where they go 모두 따라다라닷 뛰쳐나와라 baby (i lowkey thought it was a lick at first without the bass booster)
tldr ; the prechorus of home run gives off jazzy vibes and jazz is my favorite kind of music genre so . bottom line? woozi best producer MY GOD.

@shesaboozle tagged me for '4 albums i've been listening to lately'
this is difficult criteria for me because i am. historically not really an Album Person (i favor making playlists with as many artists as there are songs, usually, or bouncing around discographies) so i'm going to count 'at least 2 songs from the album' as 'listening to an album' or else i couldn't answer this at all. yeah i even do this with the cds in my car, i'm unfixable
i also disqualified short little albums / singles or else 'eat your young' & jisoo's 'flower' both also belong here
svt fml is really good (sans fire which i do not like i'm so sorry). the linked song is my favorite b-side... i really like the beat and especially the prechorus. fml itself is my favorite of the 2 title tracks even though super does fuck really hard. i do wish they'd let seventeen actually say uncensored fuck though lmao
yes, yes, i know, predictable. this link is the only friends trailer music, aka my favorite song of theirs, and my second favorite is 'baggage'.
i listen to crane wives literally all the time, so this is kind of a copout, but like i said i was thinking about the garden x akkaye So Much today. my other favorites from this album are 'curses' & 'ribs' & 'can't go back'
known purity ring fan has been listening to purity ring again.... shocker..... i love watersong's instrumental so so much the meter is so funky. unlucky is my secondary favorite
i am going to brave the inexplicable physical anxiety that always beats me up when i get to this part of being tagged in things and try. to tag @petrichoraline and.... @troubled-mind if u 2 would like

chan's postchorus melody (and in the outro) is so fun, it's got choral/circus-y vibes if that makes sense
felix's weird xylophone raps + jeongin's panning ah's. it's giving me maze of memories >:)
the man on the moon clip.... chan must be proud of that one
this feels like cheese's cousin and will probably be on loop
s-class: 8/10
not the hugest fan of changbin's opener, shockingly enough
hyunjin's first line is the best attention grabber, soooooo well done
goofy ass sound effects in the first verse but i'm not complaining
"swerving i'm speeding on serpent rooooad" i think i floated a couple inches in the air the first time i heard this prechorus it's sooooo fucking good -- and this is coming from someone who normally hates the melodic prechorus thing in like every other song (god's menu, venom, freeze, etc.)
the chorus... i hated it the first time i heard it. but now it's catchy. also in context with the rest of the song it makes complete sense to me
controversial opinion(?): i love changbin's enunciated simple rap over the old school beat, and i especially love how han's track layers some classic samples on top
SECOND CHORUS DISTORTION suuuuuuch a good call... otherwise the chorus would be boring but it's enough of a change-up that it also foreshadows the upcoming parts of the song that stretch and shift the typical song structure
pre-dance break rap exchange is not my fav but it keeps the energy up anyway
DANCE BREAK IS GOOD!!!!!! love the production
title track ranking: better than thunderous, maniac, case 143 (duh); not quite god's menu level of shocking and not as tasteful as back door
item: 9.5/10
the productionnnnn.......... i'm drooling
the rap tone from changbin is so bratty and the pacman/game theme of the song is so funny
i wish had better words for the backtrack sounds bc i want to point out all the sounds and their textures; like the high-hat percussion beat which is super similar to the one they used in domino; and this heavy dark crunchy synth sound they keep using
FELIX GROWLY CHORUS. cheap thrills maybe but my fav part of the song
the fucking autotune felix section "celebraaaate" is so bad that it's funny which makes it perfect for the song. it's like jeongin moaning in N/S do you understand
second prechorus + postchorus is a little boring idk why -- that's why it's not 10/10
repetitive lee know before felix's final chorus is inspired
domino's annoying but lovable younger sibling. will be on loop
super bowl: 8/10
digusting beat, very excellent (makes me think of doodle)
the lyrics are so insanely corny it's DJ VXNILLX at his best i swear to god
the nct-esque chanting lmao... sm wake up!
"aw this shit's so bussing" WHY LMAO (edit: i have learned this is not what he's saying but it's what everyone is hearing so)
honestly. the ASMR whispering is so cringy to me but it's also amazing genius. and also so embarrassing but also hot. very confusing stuff
bridge is so out of place but who cares tbh
topline: 6/10
very fun almost "throwback" hiphop type of sound, i love whatever they sampled for the backtrack
"cause we don't give a fu--" we cheered.
tiger jk is a good rapper! :)
maybe strange opinion but hyunjin's second rap was the best of all the raps imo
it's a good song, but it's a little plain for me (maybe just in comparison to the other songs); i'm probably gonna skip it a lot
dlc: 7/10
it's CUTE! it sits at the same table as blueprint, run, mixtape: oh, ex if that makes sense
i think this has better production than the other changbin songs i'm aware of, actually; it still has his trademark sort of wistful bitter melancholy but the sound is a little more diverse than stuff like sorry i love you or streetlight
the instrumental beat drop sections i like more than i thought i would, especially the breakdown towards the end
one criticism: i would've introduced the "la la" sample much earlier in the song, it feels a little out of nowhere in the last third
i actually love this kind of skz song so it'll probably have longer lasting power with me
get lit: 7.5/10
this song comes out of the gate swinging jesus fucking christ
love the club banger backbeat that's like 100% muffled bass
this is insane but i would've preferred an even harder drop from the bassline for the chorus
the mumbling line hyunjin + felix have with the muffled beat is so good
last drop is CRAAAAAAZY!!! CHAN IS BARKING
collision: 5.5/10
why am i suddenly in a dimly lit smoky jazz bar with bronze/gold details and red roses everywhere
i saw someone on twitter say smth about the sax and i have to emphasize that this is clearly a trumpet
a rare bangchan win from me: his verse was the best imo
the main chorus melody is extremely plain but still very sweet and catchy; it feels like a song to slow dance to after a date night at a fancy steak place. tbh not my cup of tea but still nice
fnf: 8.5/10
i cried at literally the first line. my dog just died sue me
normally i don't like how chan arranges guitar-heavy production but this song did a great job without feeling too mixtape: time out
prechorus doing something to my heart that hurts
the chorus is so sad to me... i think watching the intro for 5star and seeing chan's thoughts on this track casts this whole song into a different, more complicated vibe. like the meaning behind "i'm catching up" when singing about death and grief -- that's actually really good, and i really like how this line is "stuttered" or halted in the first two choruses, and only gets pronounced in full for the very last chorus, bc they've literally "caught up"
i also really like how for the "uh-uh-uh" lines, the melody shifts into a minor key -- that's what's keeping the chorus interesting and from falling into bland territory
second verse is deeply upsetting for me. yes i'm still thinking about my dead dog
the eagle cry is a little silly/on the nose but i think it's a sweet touch bc i know how earnest it is
also just generally speaking, i'm a sucker for songs whose lyrics/topic are really fucking sad but are musically very upbeat (which is why i love txt's discography so much too)
outro/final chorus very good, especially the full "i'm catching up!" followed by the falsetto...
also this song activates my synethesia like crazy for that fresh spring green, so i will be listening to this a bunch
youtiful / the sound / mixtape: time out 0 / 10
these pissed me off that's all i have to say

FINAL THOUGHTS
first thing: i will say this, and it will be deeply upsetting for stays who loved skz for their pre-noeasy stuff, but it's true: chan's production and musical direction was heavily influenced by other things when he was first starting out because he was still learning, but i would say starting most obviously with oddinary, this is actually what skz's (read: chan's) personal production style is like -- and this is what skz's future releases will sound like too. there's much less imitation in production style in this album, and if it's there, it's more of a reference or allusion like in topline, and not so much a participation in a genre tradition. this makes sense, bc they've been saying repeatedly how they don't want to be defined by a genre, but want to pioneer their own -- even if it sounds really fucking weird. stuff like victory song, levanter, even side effects felt like they could've been made by other artists bc chan was still getting his production legs under him, but stuff like god's menu, domino, and case 143 is where he started pulling together a personal style.
i would characterize go live as a demonstration of skz's flashes of genius while still borrowing the sound profile of genre to use as training wheels; noeasy was them slowly playing with developing a unique sound and practicing songwriting; and 5 star is them doubling down on the production and songwriting skills they've developed since noeasy. this is their most "matured" set of songs and you can hear the difference. it's not necessarily better than the other two albums in terms of personal taste, but i think it's obvious how much work they've done the past two years to be able to come up with and execute the 5 star tracklist, and listening to it i feel like i can see 100% the intention behind the execution, which is admirable even if you hate the music. luckily i don't!
you can tell that all of them figured out what their particular talent is (what makes them "special" ha) bc they echoed what they did in the past, when those talents were first apparent. s class has a lot in common with god's menu, in vibe and structure. item is the successor to domino which skz admitted themselves, bc they were aware of how special that kind of song is. hall of fame and super bowl feels adjacent to stuff like cheese, where it's all attitude and/or aggression. felix has leaned into his voice being used as an "accent" or "point", lee know has a lot of "shouting" tone power, han's songwriting is getting more diverse (with get lit) and more defined (with collision), etc. it's not that they're copying what they've done before, because more stays would be happy with this album if that were the case, which judging by my mutuals' reactions, many are NOT; it's more that they've developed a self-awareness as artists. this album felt like evidence that everything they say in interviews about their artistic development is true, it's not just posturing: they work hard to change, and they'd much rather be continually weird and alienating than stay the same and grow complacent, even if it pisses of their fanbase and most of the general public.
personally i'm extremely relieved because 1) i obviously loved nearly all the songs but also 2) i was terrified maxident and The Sound were going to signify the BTS-ification of stray kids, a la dynamite / butter / permission to dance. 5 star solidly put those worries to rest thank fucking god. maybe my music taste is broken but i get Weird skz forever so i win
extra notes:
the "switchup" happens in a lot of songs in this album, most obviously in s class, but i'm not 100% convinced it's them capitalizing on any trend (like the switchups that nmixx is known for), since they've done switchups like this before in god's menu & back door and other songs too; for me it feels more like chan playing w the patterning he did in god's menu, bc 5 star as an album has a lot of homages to their go live era
everyone got a lot better at everything imo -- particularly in vocals; seungmin did a standout job on all of his lines obviously, but i also noticed lee know's voice has a lot more support and actually chan's lines i would put in the top three too.
live vocals from their stages are also WAY improved; i'm guessing the maniac tour gave them a lot of experience

SKZ REPLAY (new songs) LISTEN THROUGH 💛💫📣💫💛
CONNECTED - this is SUUUUCH A CHAN SONG. WE’RE CONNECTED IN WAYS THAT ARE UNDENIABLE [EDM NOISES] WE’RE HORNY AND HAPPY WITH EACH OTHER [MORE EDM NOISES] obsessed with this, i need this on a festival setlist IMMEDIATELY. you know how many rave babes would lose their mind of WE’RE CONNECTED [DANCE DROP] the song structure is perfect to me. the way the funky percussion in the beginning keeps popping up. CHAN MAKE AN EDM SOLO MIXTAPE PLEASE I NEED IT MY FUNKY LIL RAVE BOY
LIMBO - joining the ranks of break up songs that are actually about when your best friend dies at a young age and you thought you had a forever of friendship ahead of you and you have to reconcile with all the things you never told her, all the ways you were distant when you shouldn’t have been, the ways you can never make it up to her because she’s gone. i love the way the chorus is so shouty and the drums are SO energetic. the contrast between the chorus and the verses is striking!! the prechorus building to the volume of the chorus is soooo [chef’s kiss] GET INTO IT SONG STRUCTURE.
DOODLE - SHOVES IT IN MY FUCKING MOUTH I CAN ALREADY IMAGINE HOW THIS IS GUNNA SOUND ON MY SUBS. THE PRODUCTION I’LL LITERALLY FUCKING LOSE MY GODDAMN MIND WHO DOES IT LIKE SEO CHANGBIN!!!! creating a playlist in my mind that’s like uhhh bewhy’s the mainland & the greatest into skz 3racha into changbin doodle, there’s like fucking little vibrating zipperY rumbly noise that is SOOOOO sexy. THE FUCKING SEESAWING HIGH NOISE, THE MARKER SCRATCHES, THE WAY CHANGBIN RIDES THE BEAT. WHEN THE SONG CRASHES LIKE ALL A BOX OF MARKERS IS POURING OUT ONTO A TABLE/FLOOR AND IT CHANGES COMPLETELY HE STARTS GOING FUCKING CRAZZZZY OVER THE TOP AND THEN IT GOES BACK !!! THE FACT THAT HE DREW OUT THE CHORUS A FEW MORE LINES AT THE END IS FUCKING PERFECT I’LL KISS YOU ON THE MOUTH SEO CHANGBIN
LOVE UNTOLD - I’ll fucking lose my mind, I’ll lose my GODDAMN ENTIRE MIND. the fact that love untold has lyric parallels to wish you back is ENOUGH but the fact that the fucking melody and production and structure is SOOOO similar is also FUCKING CRAZYMAKING. imagine you listen to love untold and wish you back one after another three times in a row like i just did and LOSE YOUR ENTIRE BRAIN PAN like i just did. hyunsung!!!!!!!!! are you kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!! AFTER BECOMING SOMEONE WHO LOVES YOU, I’M BECOMING SOMEONE WHO LOVES MYSELF.
RUN - i love how run fits with connected, like they could both be on chan’s edm mixtape and i support that. i love how old the song is, i love how jisung said in 2019 he was someone who wanted to run away and now he’s someone who wants to run towards. what a little vibey baby!! this is gunna sound sooooo good in my car.
DEEP END - i’m like SOOOOO obsessed with the way this song is so perfectly felix. the way it’s so self-contained outside the sound of the album, like it has SUCH a strong sense of identity. some parts of this are so billie eilish, the vocal layering and reverb, so isn’t it lovely. he’s showing VOCAL RANGE. my fave is his midrange, especially singing. in like...every song, i can mostly always do without falsetto (unless it’s like...zayn tbh) but that’s personal preference, i’m OBSESSED with the way he slides so effortlessly between depths. high to low and everything in between. his voice is so unique and flexible and he sings with SUCH expression. INDULGE THIS MORE. GIVE HIM MORE LINES.
STARS AND RAINDROPS - you beautiful talented bitch. i LOVE the tempo of this song. it’s a VIBE. HIS VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL. WHAT MORE IS THERE TO SAY. he has it ALL. energy! brightness! line delivery! a vibe! a bop!!! kim seungmin!!! [dog dancing] THE FUCKING CHORDS TRAILING OFF AT THE END ARE SOOOO EARLY 00S ALT ROCK GUITAR MUSIC I’M GUNNA BITE SOME ONE
HUG ME - iyenie you are sooooo fucking iyenie, he said y’all are singing about ROMANCE? COUNT ME OUT? LET’S HAVE A HUG. god how much ammunition did he just give all his ‘desperate for jeongin skinship’ members. i can HEAR hyunjin’s voice saying ‘I GIVE YOU A HUG OH BABY’ and latching onto that bread while jeongin regrets his entire life. ANYWAY I LOVE THE LIL BASS(?) MELODY LINE THAT RUNS THROUGH THIS. REPLICATED IT ON A DOUBLE BASS, GIVE THIS A BRASS COVER. i love how vocalracha are so in sync. you could just smack this and stars n raindrops and can’t stop all on the same playlist and the vibes will vibe.
doodle is my fave.
okay now i’m going to listen to i got it on repeat for the foreseeable future BLESS.

midnights by taylor swift review im back for another first listen release review. the majority of songs i love (bolded i will stand and die by) and enjoy but there are some skips. i think this album has a lot more variety than her last two albums that will pertain to a lot more people, but is less focused on one sound like folklore. off the bat, i doesnt eclipse any of my favs (folklore and reputation), but hm it might fight reputation, it reminds me of a more mature reputation and is more experimental with vocals and instrumentals. lets dive in:
lavender haze - the electronic start of this song with "meet me at midnight" is so danceable. i love the "yeah oh yeah"s, they are so goood. this song just makes me want to move, im obsessed.
maroon - the verses dont do a whole lot for me, a little boring and 2 drum beats, but i love the whole chorus "the burgundy on my t-shirt when you splashed your wine into me" and the "maroon"s coming in louder and louder throughout the song. anti-hero - this song is kind of funny and cheeky, despite the words being super dark (my fav "when my depression works the graveyard shift, all of the people ive ghosted stand there in the room"). i thought the "its me, hi, im the problem, its me" was a little lame, but its growing a lot of me after 2 listens.
snow on the beach - theres like two speeds in this album, one electronic and other side super soft and slow, this one being the later side. in contrast to some of my other favorite songs, it doesnt quite hit as dramatically but i do enjoy its dreamy, light verses and "weird but fucking beautiful". youre on your kid - this little indie beat is so sweet and her spoken "youre on your own kid, you always have been" is perfect, uplifting, brings me peace. i also love the verse, prechorus, verse, chorus pattern. it tells a story from beginning to end, and i love a story. midnight rain - the beginning!!! the contrast of her electronically-deepened voice is so fun against the first line "my town was a wasteland". the soft claps, the drum beat, "picture perfect shiny family holiday peppermint candy" wrap everything together. question..? - i dont love the chorus lyrics, its far too specific. the tone of the song also stays very flat and i dont really love the bridge either especially that autotuned "tonightttt". lmao the clapping and cheering. but the song isnt like annoying or anything so ill listen to it more. vigilante shit - super reputation-like "are you ready for it" sound. i only like this song when she sings "don't get sad, get even". i live for the spice on the "even", its maybe one of my favorite lines in the whole album, but the song itself is bottom tier. bejeweled - i cant with this song. the way she sings *shimmer*, i cant do it. the rhymes at the end of the songs "man / remember", the childish "nice!", "i miss sparkling". cant relate. labyrinth - for a song that is about falling in love, its far too chill and i dont like the weird floob-floob sounds scattered throughout. the vocals are so soft and the instrumentals are random.
karma - this song is an easy fan favorite that blew up on tiktok immediately and im clapping riding that train. its catchy, its funny, its "sweet like honey". this makes me love taylor.
sweet nothing - this funky lullaby is a sweet love song and reminds me of delicate "you must like me for me". the choruses are much better than the verses though, like lol wut "i wrote a poem, you say what a mind, this happens all the time".
mastermind - obsessed with the intro beats and "checkmate i couldnt lose", but the "im a mastermind" and the whole song makes me think really, did you plan your current relationship, kind of weird and creepy sorry (3am track time!) the great war - the chorus is so strong and catchy "my hand was the one you reached for all throughout the great war". i also just like the messaging that her current relationship carried her through this huge drama. bigger than the whole sky - i do like the sound of the background instruments, some of the lyrics im not a huge fan of like "did some bird flap its wing over asia" and etc, and "shouldve been couldve been" feels like it shouldve been in another song. the song just flows past you and its over. paris - uh excuse me? rhyming paris with (some)where else?? genius. the verses are witty and i cant wait to learn them: "drew a map on your bedroom ceiling". also anyone else notice in the bridge "at midnight in my mind" sounds just like daylight. this feels very much meant for lover but it still fits.
high infidelity - the piano and vocals are straight out of evermore but all the beeping and button sounds brings it into the midnights era. im also getting strong renegade energy ("are you really gonna talk about timing in times like these?") from "do i really have to ...". i love "put on your records and regret meeting me, put on your headphones and burn my city". there are some things i would change about the song but overall its good. glitch - the background static and "oh oh ooh"s add velvet and warmth to the song, despite the kind of boring lyrics "i think theres been a glitch im fastening myself to you with a stitch". she writes this glitch/system/static/counterfeit/malfunction metaphor but it never really sticks 100% for me. its just missing something to tie it all together. would've, could've, should've - this song is impressively balanced, with such strong verses, choruses, and bridges. "if youd never looked my way i wouldve stayed on my knees". dear reader - heavenly vocals with a melody that actually surprised me, and a bridge that feels liberating like taylor is finally telling you her truth. the way she manipulates her voice electronically adds so much interest and intrigue to the song. overall, taylor does not disappoint yet again with a funky fun album with a song for everyone.
