Never not thinking about how Buffy has to beg and plead for Angel to not let the sun kill him when the first was tormenting him with what he’s done and that fact that soul or no soul he still wants to hurt Buffy and he concludes the only way he won’t is to kill himself….. and the only reason he didn’t dust was the storm and he was fully gonna let her watch him die again because he couldn’t face what a worthless piece of shit and a monster even with the soul he really is (and then suddenly they’re back together even though Buffy said they couldn’t be together anymore like RIGHT before all this so essentially Angel threatens to kill himself and then suddenly he and Buffy are back together 🙃 i hate it here)
Riley was gonna let himself die rather than become even weaker than Buffy while she again begs for him to stop being a whiny attention seeking toddler and grow the fuck up and do what he needs to do so he won’t DIE (my words not hers obviously lol) and when that doesn’t work and she still doesn’t “pay enough attention to him or need him enough” in his eyes while she’s ya know being the slayer, raising her sister and taking care of her sick mother…. He cheats on her in a way that again threatens his own life and the lives of everyone he could easily kill in her life if he were to be turned and when THAT doesn’t work he threatens to leave forever unless she forgives him IMMEDIATELY
And Spike who is the only one to actually die after she again is pleading you don’t have to do this “no there’s still time you’ve done enough” because Spike knows Buffy doesn’t deserve “good enough” Buffy deserves everything, she deserves to be free of the hellmouth even though that means they can’t be together and he’ll die
Two man-children who threaten to kill themselves because they can’t handle what they’ve done or that they’re not as strong as they think they are and drag an overburdened and traumatized young woman they had no business even dating in the first place along for their self-destructive ride vs a man who literally already sacrificed everything he was to become someone she could love without guilt, sacrificing everything he fought to become, for her and her beloved world she loves so much and fights so hard to protect.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MEN WHO THREATEN DEATH VS THE MAN WHO ACTUALLY DIED AND THE VASTLY DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THESE THREE EVENTS 😭😭😭
Spike dying BECAUSE he was worthy of Buffy’s love rather than because he wasn’t like the two who came before him

This fucking guy
My villain origin story is people claiming that Riley's biggest crime in the series was being boring. He wasn't just boring. He was a passive-aggressive chauvinist who the show bent over backward to defend. A while back on Reddit, I made a list of reasons why Riley sucks. This is that list, and I'm adding to it.
The only reason he punches Parker is because Parker is mouthing off about a girl Riley likes. Everything about this interaction suggests that Riley has heard him say similar before, and hasn't cared until the woman in question was someone he had a vested interest in.
He calls Buffy stupid for not wanting to date him (if this guy slid into your DMs and called you stupid for turning him down, lbr, this would not lead into a healthy, lasting romance)
He immediately puts himself in competition with Buffy. Even at his most inoffensive, he says things like "I don't even know if I could take you."
He has an inherently chauvinistic view of the world (established in The Initiative)
He is upset that Buffy had a significant relationship before she knew him and assumes Buffy boinked Angel in The Yoko Factor
He uses abuser language to excuse his shitty behavior like, "I love you so much I can't think straight."
He decides that Buffy doesn't love him all by himself
When he decides that Buffy doesn't love him, he confides in Xander and doesn't communicate his relationship issues with Buffy
He wants to help Buffy but only in jobs that are "manly." In No Place Like Home, for instance, he nopes out when Buffy suggests he help with the spell to identify what might be wrong with Joyce. Even if there wasn't a lot for him to do, he could, idk, stick around to be moral support for his partner who is trying to figure out what might be attacking her mother. That seems like a pretty standard partner thing to do.
He gets upset that Buffy "doesn't get all worked up over him" the way she did with Angel when "getting all worked up" in CONTEXT means "isn't constantly miserable."
He is sad boi at Buffy in OoMM for also prioritizing her mother's health after she believes Riley is healed rather than sticking around to play nursemaid
He wants Buffy to show emotion over Joyce at a time when Buffy literally cannot (if you've never had a parent in the hospital with a life-threatening illness, maybe you don't know that there are times/places to break down and "in the hospital" where you're supposed to be strong isn't one of them)
He doesn't care that his girlfriend's mother is sick, possibly with something life-threatening; he cares that he got to be the hero of the piece, the shoulder for Buffy to cry on. His only reaction to any of that was to be hurt that Buffy didn't respond the way he thought she should; no concern for her well-being or Joyce's, just Riley getting his feelings hurt because he wasn't the center of Buffy's universe or the rock for her to lean on when all went to pieces
This is further confirmed by the way he just doesn't mention Joyce's absence at all in As You Were. When he leaves Sunnydale, it's after Joyce has had a successful operation. He returns and she's not there and no questions? No condolences? It's because he doesn't care.
He doesn't ask about Buffy's death when she lets him know she died.
He starts separating himself from the Scoobies and then gets mad for not being included
He literally cheats on Buffy with vampire sex workers (there are people who say they were not sex workers, but in a show where monsters are metaphors, you have to be especially dense or willfully obtuse to not realize this is what they are)
Riley intentionally puts himself in a position where he might be killed or turned specifically to SPITE BUFFY, which demonstrates his lack of consideration for what she might have to do later if things go bad
Riley blames Buffy for being roofied by Dracula (again, monsters as metaphor)
He never apologizes or owns that he was unfaithful
He blames his infidelity on Buffy, actually
The first time Buffy learns Riley isn't happy, she's told she should've seen it, which is classic victim blaming and happens from Xander AND Riley (and a good amount of fans who want to excuse that behavior)
He is fine with torturing sentient creatures, and in fact had a stake made specifically so he could torture vampires without killing them
He goes behind Buffy's back all the time
Riley was not boring. If he were boring, he would be inoffensive. Dull to watch but not rage-inducing. But he is rage-inducing because, despite all the passive-aggressive gaslighting bullshit he gets away with, people in this fandom still believe he was "Buffy's best boyfriend." That she was to blame for the deterioration of this relationship. That he was the healthiest of the Buffyverse men. The show does, too. That's why Xander (Wh*don's mouthpiece) gives that sanctimonious little speech to Buffy (the audience in this case) in Into the Woods to scold us for not treating Riley better. Then they double down in As You Were to make Buffy fawn all over herself to let this gaslighting asshole off the hook for everything he put her through.
Riley's sin is not being boring. It's that he was actually awful. Wh*don himself once called Riley a "healthy relationship" for Buffy, and if that doesn't tell you something, there's no talking to you.

hey remember when Willow told Riley if he hurt Buffy she'd beat him to death with a shovel? where was that energy in s5, Willow? Riley has hurt Buffy and you didn't even poke at Riley with a shovel, much less hurt him with one. where was this energy when he came back in s6 with a spanking new wife and a "mission" and showed up at Buffy's place of work pretending that he needed her, proceeded to take her away from there, avoided telling her anything about his marriage OR the key point about their mission (namely: do not kill the demon we're hunting down, we need it alive), and then made her feel like shit about her life to the point that she ended up apologising to him despite her life and choices being none of his goddamn business?  where were the shovels, Will? you're a powerful witch by that point, you could have summoned one from the ether or whatever and still no shovels. you made a vow that day, Willow, and all things considered I think you should have upheld it, in spirit if not the letter of it exactly

Into the Woods aired for BTVS season 5, episode 10. Riley has an emotional confrontation with someone. Thank goodness for helicopters, although this is not the last we see of Riley in the Buffyverse.

Buffy: "I was never there for Riley. Not like I was for Angel."
Well, your family wasn't falling apart while you were with Angel.
Well, yeah, but if it was, she would've leaned on Angel and let him see how she was really feeling. She would've told Angel everything she knew about Dawn as she found it out, and probably asked for his help finding out more. The breaking point wasn't really her not being 'there' for Riley, it was how glaringly obvious it became that she had no real use for Riley in her life. She didn't trust him or respect him as an equal, and there was nothing he could do to fix that because, well, she was right. He didn't understand the complexities of the supernatural, he couldn't handle her jagged edges, and he couldn't do anything for her that she couldn't do better herself. If he had just put on his big boy pants and told her all that instead of lying and cheating and gaslighting and generally being a giant bitch, I really wouldn't blame him at all.

the worst part of that godawful riley episode in s6 is that willow looks so freaking stinking cute but i can't appreciate the look without wanting to vomit bc what on earth is that riley-written-fanfic episode? stop recording riley's revenge fantasies, they aren't even good!

three more for the ask game: ❄️ 🥐🍦
Yay, more!! Thank u!
❄️ ⇢ what's your dream theme/plot for a fic, and who would write it best?
Any fic with a ship I love + one or both of the characters is trans. Idk who would write it best haha! The ideas I have are things I plan to write but I def don't think my own writing is "the best." But if I have the idea I already kinda know how I would write it so I don't think I'd ask someone else to because even if it's the best thing I've ever read, it wouldn't be what I imagined? Idk if that makes sense 😂
🥐 ⇢ name one internet reference that will always make you laugh
I immediately forgot every internet reference I have ever laughed at ever... The only thing coming to mind are vines so. There's this one video on YouTube that's every episode of btvs as vines and sometimes random ones pop into my head and make me laugh so I'm going with that 😂 also text posts and out of context videos
🍦 ⇢ name three good things about a character you hate
My most hated character is def Warren but I simply cannot do this about him so I'm going with...this took me forever to decide haha i dislike a couple characters but it's more because I think that's kinda fun to jokingly character bash with my friends than because I actually truly hate them. I probably joke about hating Riley the most so I'm going with him 😂
1. think he was an okay person for Buffy to date because sometimes you learn a lot from a relationship even if it doesn't work out, like about what you do or don't want from a future partner
2. The balls poster on his wall makes me laugh because I'm actually five years old so I'm happy when it gets an appearance
3. He is a very large man so it's really fun to watch Buffy spar with him because she's so tiny and yet easily kicks his ass

Riley was Buffy's TA when he started pushing her into a romantic relationship! He controlled a huge share of her grades, and therefore her scholarship money going into sophomore year. Really, Riley is as predatory as Angelus - and at least Angelus didn't oil around Buffy's friends and family to convince them that this gross abuse of power is perfectly normal.

I genuinely don’t understand how people can watch the body swap episode and enjoy seeing Faith inhabit Buffy’s body and WORSE objectifying (Faith)Buffy being like “omg she’s so hot she slayed so hard I love Buffy in black leather”
Not only is SMG’s FRIGHTENING thinness even more apparent in Faith’s traditional wardrobe showcasing just how much she is practically skin and bone due to her being under immense stress and being so overworked which always just tears at my heart in so many ways but we are witnessing the WORST violation of Buffy’s body and autonomy!!!! I’m genuinely just sick the entire episode.
Bad enough she almost gets Buffy killed and finally gets her wish of (temporarily) stealing Buffy’s life which she has wanted to do since her arrival in season 3 (only to STILL not understand Buffy’s perspective until she does it again in a far less invasive way in season 7 after Buffy allowed her back into her home and she still never properly apologizes she’s like hehe turns our your life is actually pretty miserable and I don’t want it because I can’t handle the stress and constant pressure you’re under…. Oops!🙃) but unlike when Willow takes Buffy’s free will and autonomy away (where she at least still retains all the memories after the fact of everything that happened so she doesn’t have to wonder and can process them when she’s ready) Buffy has ZERO CLUE what all Faith allows to happen to her body while she’s not in it. And Faith isn’t unaware or passive about the power she holds and the things she can do to Buffy’s body in the position she’s in - she literally tells Riley, BEGS HIM - to do all of the nastiest things he’s ever wanted to do “to this body” she WANTS Riley to do things to Buffy’s body Buffy herself WOULD. NOT. ALLOW. it is one of THE MOST insidious lines in the entire series to me because not only is that an absolutely stomach churning, bone-chilling thing to say but then after the fact when angel asks what Faith did to upset Buffy so much she’s like “I slept with her boyfriend” like UMMMM WHAT??? EXCUSE ME???? That is literally the absolute LEAST of your crimes bitch be so fucking for real. This horrific violation is minimized down to oh well Buffy is just insecure about sex and especially sex in comparison to Faith like GROSS GROSSSSSSS. The entire thing is SO DISGUSTING and misogynistic AND it is part of why I genuinely do not give A FUCK about the events of seeing red as far as my love of spuffy goes because while that was absolutely the most traumatizing to watch not only was it so completely out of left field and out of character that it just doesn’t make sense in the narrative and is so obviously joss whedon coming over the loud speaker and going “women who enjoy sex with men I don’t approve of should and always will be punished” but it is the ONLY time someone hurts her in this way and PROPERLY APOLOGIZES AND MAKES THE PROPER AMENDS!!!!
So until EVERY. SINGLE. violation of Buffy’s body is treated with the same level of outcry seeing red is by all the anti-spuffys I genuinely DO NOT CARE. I DONT CARE because I’m just so done with spuffy girlies having that thrown in our faces by the morality police who are listening to the tiny white male puritanical cop in their head.
ALSO the fact that Riley not only doesn’t think ANYTHING is off about Buffy (when Faith is doing an absolutely HORRIFIC JOB of acting like Buffy) so he not only sleeps with her BUT TELLS HER HE LOVES HER FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!??!?!?!? WHILE SHE IS LITERALLY PINNED BENEATH HIM?!?!?!?!? AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!! RILEY FINN I WILL KILL YOU IF IT IS THE LAST THING THAT I DO.

Hear me out: the hot tall dark and mysterious vampire/immortal/other kind of mystical creature boyfriend will always be supperior to the boring basic “normal joe” bf, (no matter how toxic their relationship with the mc is). At least the toxicity is usually rooted in the fictional aspect of their relationship, (like their age gap, or idk killing somebody close to the mc). But the “normal joe”s are always just controlling and jealous in a very “every other guy you find on tinder” kinda way.

oh my god Riley is such an asshole (warning: rant ahead)
did he really just complain that Buffy didn't call him when her mom went to the hospital?
like, he needs her to need him to take care of her and he clearly resents that she's perfectly capable of taking care of herself
"you can't handle the fact that I'm stronger than you" perfectly said - god he's so frustrating, I wanna punch his stupid generic forgettable face so bad 😂 (no hate to the actor but he just looks like your average white dude sns)
wait, SHE has to give HIM a reason to stay? dude, you basically cheated on her and you're blaming it on her omg I'm so annoyed, I'm gonna have to take a break after this episode oh my god
that whole conversation was so awful omg
how is Xander taking Riley's side here and blaming Buffy? she had shit going on and there's really nothing wrong with the fact that her boyfriend wasn't her priority 🤦🏻‍♀️ this is a frustrating episode, I'm so pissed 😂
she's running after him right now????? bitch, he ain't worth it
jfc Riley is the biggest flaw in this season - does the ending mean they're broken up and we won't see him again? because I'd love that
the ending kinda feels like the creators really wanted us to still root for them and be heartbroken that Buffy broke poor Riley's heart but like.... LMAO you got what you deserved dude
in season 4 Buffy was so focused on Riley she stopped hanging out with her friends and barely saw her mom - and now in s5 she was taking care of her sick mom and her sister, and she was busy with the new big bad and overall being the slayer, and since he's not the center of her world anymore he's getting insecure and pissed off and jealous and he just wanted her to need him (like, his reaction when Buffy says she cried? like, it doesn't have to be on your shoulder, get over yourself lol - or his face when Dawn says Buffy doesn't cry over him like that's a bad thing 🤯) - who in a healthy relationship does that??
this season up until this point it felt like he was getting pissed about Buffy not prioritizing him even though she had more important shit going on, and that she's stronger than him (and like, she was hypnotized by Dracula - like Xander - and Riley was pissed about that??? dude wtf)
I have a lot more opinions and feelings about Riley, none of them positive, but I'm already pissed off enough so I'll leave it at that hahah (I'm so pissed rn I'm not even sure if I articulated everything the way I wanted it to but he makes me so annoyed and mad I was literally screaming at the screen lmao)

hey i figured out how to fix the whole Buffy - Riley arc! let's retcon / fixit shall we? [partial insp <- agree with all of that] (I do think in canon Buffy loved him and hate how terrible Riley was to her.)
S4 starts with Buffy in college. UC Sunnydale. Have Riley be a slightly older student than her, maybe a junior while she's a frosh. He's NOT her TA, but he does give her tips on how to survive Prof. Walsh's class since he took it. They flirt, somehow they keep running into each other at lunch. Buffy's breakup with Parker goes poorly (same as canon).
After a healing period Buffy swears off "intense / real" relationships. Triggered partially by Willow's frequent overnight stays with Tara, Buffy has - for her - a little ho phase. Zero judgment, in fact I'm cheering her on. She makes out with a lot of guys! She does more than that with several of them. (Personally I want her to hook up with girls too but honestly either way works. Faith is sadly still in her coma though, out of the picture.) Sometimes Buffy starts feeling too connected to the guy / person, so then she drops them.
She still struggles with feeling whole. College Buffy is having fun and doing well in her classes, while The Slayer is still going out at night and getting worried about (what turns out to be) Adam. She never tells her hook ups about how she is The Chosen One. She is doing great in Prof. Walsh's class and really admires her.
Riley starts out as just another guy, just a fun no-strings-attached hook up. They meet up several times. He immediately falls VERY HARD for her. She doesn't fight it when he takes her out for a picnic, but to her he is just another fun time. (She's still seeing a couple other guys at this point.)
Then she figures out he is part of The Initiative. Then she learns Prof. Walsh is part of it too. She doesn't know about the demon torture (yet), and now she thinks Riley could be more than just a hook up. She tells him she is The Slayer. He accepts it, and is excited that they can patrol together. (He's way less of an asshat about competing with her than in canon, he acts towards her like he acts towards Sam in that episode when he comes back.)
They start acting like more of a couple with Buffy finally accepting he is more than a friend she hooks up with. She has feelings for him, breaks it off with the other hook ups. Buffy and Riley become an official couple and Riley accelerates things immediately. Talking about living together, talking about her joining The Initiative. He admits to Xander that he plans to propose. (Boy you've only known each other for like 6 months! And hooking up for like 3 months.) His whole identity switches from Initiative Guy to Guy with Buffy. (Things have started deteriorating with The Initiative drugging being revealed and him having withdrawal.) Riley has become way too intense and Buffy pulls back, trying to set some boundaries. There's no way she's ready to move in with him. They've only been officially dating for 1 month.
Riley starts becoming really antagonistic. He goes ballistic when he "realizes" she was hooking up with other guys / people when they first started hooking up, even though they talked about not being exclusive and seeing other people. Even though she was honest with him before.
Then we dip back into canon. Buffy's Mom, Riley's being terrible, etc etc, etc.
This makes S4 Briley make more sense to me. Although I would still delete Xander's stupid little "go run after him" speech. Even though I can see Xander saying all that, Buffy would NOT run after him.
