Ooohohohohh The Garden by The Crane Wives is SUCH a codebreaker duo (Phil & Etoiles) song. I'm going to be so normal about it under the cut you have no idea.

tl;dr - This song fucks. It points to the personal vendettas that Phil and Etoiles have against the code monster, particularly the lead-up to the election dinner and the aftermath concerning the not!eggs.

Ok first of all, the violent undertones of the lyrics hidden beneath the relatively calm/pleasant sound of the instrumental itself (at the beginning, at least) compliments Phil and Etoiles personalities SO well. They're both very friendly, upbeat people. Etoiles makes light of death through his dark humor, and Phil is generally a pretty chill guy. But they both got Something stewing beneath the surface, one way or another. Some of my favorite lines from the song:

Tear it down, tear it down around my head. First of all, both of them had their Moment that made them REALLY want the codes dead (when the wool came off their eyes and their illusions of safety on the island were torn down). For Phil, his was when Tallulah lost a life to the code in a fight that was impossible to win. For Etoiles, I'm 90% sure it's when Pomme was targeted and "killed" by the code. (The death was later retconned; I'm iffy on Etoiles' early-days lore so bear with me if I misjudge something.)

In conjunction with this, "tear" is just such a visceral word when you think abt it. You usually "tear" something with your hands. It's up-close and personal. Ooohohoh love my some good word subtext.

The crows in the garden are laughing at my expense. Chatters moment. Though it particularly alludes to Phil's chat, the crows, it applies to chat in general: viewers (lovingly) bullying streamers when they take an L in a fight. With the dubiously canon existence of chats in qsmp, I feel like this applies. Also, the general feeling of frustration and embarrassment for your shortcomings (in this case, protecting your child.) Sometimes, that can feel like the universe is mocking you.

My stone, my shield, my steady hand. What they rely on. That is all.

Put your ear to my heart or set your teeth against my throat. This specifically brings to mind Etoiles' "desire" for death bc it makes him feel more alive. Also both of them frothing at the bit for the code monster to "COME AT ME ALREADY!"

Tell the crows they can have their pound of flesh. Both of their desires for revenge on the code monster!! To want your 'pound of flesh' is to be determined to get something you see as rightfully yours. And once again, an allusion to Phil’s chat in particular.

The ghosts at the window echo all our quiet prayers; when they come for us, they'll come with hammers and nails. The codes coming for them, targeting Phil and later Etoiles! The codes want both Phil and Etoiles (ESPECIALLY Etoiles) out of the equation. Also "ghosts" remind me of the not!eggs, and the not!eggs “answer their prayers” by giving them the fight they’ve been itching for for months.

And of course...

My darling, the devil knows my name! This sums up everything to do with Phil and Etoiles relationship with the codes. The code monsters (prior to the election dinner) targeted and harassed Phil while pointedly avoiding Etoiles. During the election dinner, it was Phil's eggs who were impersonated, and Etoiles was forced into a 2v1 against them. Like I mentioned earlier, it's personal for these guys. The devil (the code) knows their names, and it acts accordingly.

Anyway, remember how I pointed out the relatively calm/pleasant undertones of the music itself? Well, the song branches away from that as it continues, especially breaking through whenever "My darling, the devil knows my name," is sung, and it builds and builds and OUGHHHH the bridge into the final verse. Crazy vocals aside, when that electric guitar comes in, I die on the spot. It’s the PERFECT transition into the chaotic, darker, grungier, dirtier part of the song, all crunchy electric grit and grime, sweat and blood and clenched teeth, AAAUGHH. I could go on for ages about the last bridge.

For me, this part specifically brings to mind Phil and Etoiles at the election dinner finally getting their moment, their fair one-on-one fight against the code monster. And once again, that up-close-and-personal, violent imagery comes into play during the final verse:

Get on your knees and Dig up the garden Won't you throw down that spade and Dig up the garden, darling? Get your hands dirty and Rip up the garden Won't you cut down that apple tree for me?

The mention of “apple tree” brings to mind all the times the code monster goaded the players with items that symbolize their eggs, particularly Pomme. She’s the only egg with two lives, so the mention of cutting down the apple tree in the final line feels like a taunt. That code monster’s not gonna need anymore apples because its threats are pointless.

Anyway yeah. Codebreakers my beloveds. The moment my brain comes up with enough cohesive plot for a codebreakers fic, it is OVER for you bitches.

Finally got around to do an in-depth analysis of The Garden by The Crane Wives

(mostly of the text)

TW: religious oppression/violence

Ok so. The singer is talking to someone they're close to (bed=intimacy) and asking them to conceal something shameful, because ''bury'' is a pretty extreme way of hiding something and the singer can't even name it, using ''this''. Usually when you use ''this'' there is a precedence in the text, but there's none here.

The religious imagery begins with the garden probably referencing the garden of Eden. But the supposed paradise is now full of crows, an animal associated with bad omens and superstition (!), creating an antithesis. We understand the singer has been exposed and lies can't help them anymore. Hiding didn't work out!

Anaphora of ''my'' showing the strong bond between the singer and their lover (also aliteration of ''s'' right after the ''my'' which sounds absolutely lovely. One of my favorite parts of the song). The singer needs the other person, talks directly to them and asks them to help again.

The lover is presented here as a protector and a supporter but also a way to fight back.

There's a dichotomy between light and darkness: notice how ''your light'' opposes ''the darkness'', the lover's light is a part of themselves but the singer's darkness is something external that made its way into their head, probably a consequence of the environment (they're being bullied by crows).

(ok i lied all parts of this song are my favorites urgh)

Lexical field of the body, the singer is abandoning themselves to their lover. This is also pretty erotic, evoking high intimacy between those two people.

The singer seems to resign themselves to being unable to conceal the shameful thing that are their feelings, manifesting here into ''blood-stained clothes'' (as if they comitted a crime). But at least the lover can give the singer something beautiful that no one else can see.

Ah yes, my favorite lyrics, ''woah, oh''

Term of endearment ! ''My darling, the devil'' just sounds so sound. Religious imagery hitting you right in the face here. The singer has been led to believe that they were a sinner, so much that the devil himself knows their name ! Love contrasting with this terribly brutal notion.

The singer decides now to bury their lover and themselves. The crows be damned, they can take what they want, at least the two lovers are together in their bed. At this stage of the song, the shame/hiding has turned into acceptance of the not so ideal situation.

Ok this is actually a mystery to me. Who are those ghosts. At first i thought about the holy ghost in catholicism but it doesn't make much sense. Are those people dead ? Are they ghosts only to the lovers who feel completely disconnected from them ?

(also I can't stop hearing ''the quiet prayers'' which changes everything urgh)

Anyway they're pretty indiscreet, looking through a window into the singer's home (room even, with all the mentions of the bed), an intimate place. They even echo something meant to be quiet, making it known to everyone else. The antagonists in this song (crows, ghosts, is this halloween) really won't let things go quietly.

''Hammers and nails'' the lovers will be martyrs (literally like Jesus) if (or rather when) they're caught. Terrible violence expressed here, and this ''when'' presents it as inevitable.

There's also another interpretation I consider, with the nails and hammers being tools to build/fix things, with the antagonists wanting to literally fix the two lovers, which will of course only hurt them.

Even tho the singer is repeating the same line as before, they're not singing it in the same way. There's something ferocious about it. And the repetition of ''my name'' shows that the singer is reclaiming it. I think there's some pride here, with the reclaiming of one's identity.

Aaaaaaaaa

The singer telling the lover to get on their knees not to pray but to destroy the garden (the supposedly origin of humanity !). They're the ones using their own tools (the spade and even their hands) not only to protect themselves but to fight back (as seen before ''my stone, my shield'' ect).

Apple tree, the root of evil, actually (apple being presented as the fruit of the original sin). This is basically saying ''let's destroy the entire structure that is oppressing us''. And they've been put in that situation, we've seen that the whole song, they have no choice, because the ghosts will come for them no matter what they do, because who they are is the problem to those people.

From shame to acceptance to justified anger. Love to see it.

Very funky. The effects on the vocalist's voice are nicely balanced between heavy reverb and chorusing. Their falsetto voice is really nice. The beat is nice and groovy, very nice beat. The guitar solo was a nice deviation from the main song. The random extra beat into the last chorus threw me off, though. But honestly, that's nitpicking. I even do that in my songs sometimes to change things up. Reminds me of newer Red Vox music a tiny bit. 7.5/10 would listen again if I were in the mood for a song like this.

Tenebre Rosso Sangue by Keygen Church

I like this. A lot. The coupling of church organ and metal is excellent. Sounds like a cross between Doom and Castlevania in the best of ways. Made me want to play Castlevania. The drop is excellent, but I do wish it wasn't so suppressed. They could have made the synth louder. Added to my liked song, 9/10. Would listen again. As an added bonus, We've Got Hostiles from Half Life came on afterwards on Spotify.

Sleepwalk by Forrest Day

This catch to this got stuck in my head 100%. I love the pizzicato done throughout the song on the violin. I really love the use of the violin, or maybe its a fiddle? I felt like I should like this more, but something didn't get me with it. I don't think I would go out of my way to listen to this, but it was an enjoyable song. 8/10 loved the fiddle and made me want to go out and buy one.

The Spy and the Liar by Puddles Pity Party

A beautiful song. The vocalist has some serious talent. Surprised the song was so short. The ending was extremely satisfying with that note the vocalist sustained. It had a very good resolution melodically as most songs of these type do. It isn't my style of music, but I'll be damned if I don't appreciate a good set of lungs when I hear them. 7/10.

The Garden by The Crane Wives

Again, wonderful vocalist. Love the tremolo they did with their voice. They were the one carrying most of the melody as opposed the the guitar, which is pretty impressive when bands can do that. It made me feel like a cowboy though, 5/10.

Queen of Nothing by The Crane Wives

Again, vocalist has amazing vocals. They've got that feminine country grit. The fadeout in the end was a nice touch to the song, with only the vocalist singing. It gave the lyrics more impact. 5/10, I wouldn't listen to this again.

Before I get into it Im going to plug this collaborative Troop Playlist on Spotify, feel free to add onto it!! Continuing with my picks

I think a lot of the songs I associate with The Troop in general are just because I happened to listen to them around the same time I got into the book in the first place (So they could only be tangentially related BUT only if you squint hard) Example: Drunk by The Living Tombstone, cant really tie it into the story but in my mind its linked Some better, more fitting songs under the cut (Side note its LONGGG IM SORRY... Also its all YouTube links because some of these arent on Spotify :'^()

Disclaimer -Like 95% of my choices arent really a "These lyrics match up exactly 1 to 1" but more of an overall "the vibe/general idea its trying to capture lines up" type thing. If that makes sense.

Its Alright by Jack Stauber: Kind of self explanatory, I think its a perfect song for these guys. From "It's alright, I'm here, Everything's alright, Feels weird but calm, I wanna hear It's alright" to the whole sound of it- its all great. Equal parts distressing and sad with an almost eerie calmness to it. Despite it all theyre gonna be alright, right?

The Second Little Piggy by Worthikids: Another one that I think is sort of self explanatory- at least with the chorus. "If my brain turns to mush, If the shit hits the fan, Will you be my friend?" Kind of the falling apart of everything, specifically their relationships, in light of the incident.

Poor George by James Supercave: Another case of "listened to at the same time I read the book" BUT I was actually making a Troop PMV script with that song. I never finished it but maybe Ill revisit it... just for you

Cold Summer by Le Matos ft Computer Magic: I dont even think this takes place in the summer but the VIBES and also it came from Summer of 84, which is another good piece of murder boy media.

Treehouse by Alex G ft Emily Yacina: This is a Eef and Max type of song because they are bffs and thats final. Basic song because Im not creative, but I think its a nice heart to heart theyd have (with Eef doing the talking)

Fifteen Minuets by Nick Krol: On the flipside heres a song that goes with Eef and Maxs friendship fracturing, once again more from Eefs side than Maxs. THE GIRLS ARE FIGHTINGGG

As far as songs for the boys as individuals hmmm thats a good one that I havent thought about as much...

MAX + The Ghosts by The Real Tuesday Weld: That survivors guilt... lyrics arent like a perfect match but I think it gets that sort of hollow feeling across. Hes haunted man... + Final Girl by Electric Youth: Ok its a little funny because har har Final Girl Trope but I mean HE IS ONE. ANd dont look at me its a nice song- "Others were gone, and you kept going on, You know they never really noticed, you were always different, One by one, They're all done, And you're the last one standing" + Going Grazy by Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks: HONESTLY this could go for all the characters but Im tagging it onto Max because hes the one who has to deal with the aftermath of losing everyone (sorry survivors guilt Max again </3) "Everyone's saying my mind is unsound, 'Cause I always see you when you aren't around" "They're gonna wrap me in a jacket of white, And lock me away in a room without light" is what cements it as a Max song for me

EEF + The Existential Threat by Sparks: Once again starting sad, I link this one specifically to his paranoia about the worms- especially with lines like "Can't they see the existential threat is on its way". Kind of exasperated no one else can see the danger (he thinks) hes in. + Wrecking Ball by Mother Mother: I know I know its basic but I cant help it!!! Eef anger issues arc we are shaking hands me too + Haunted by Laura Les: Eef struggles with people seeing him as "just like his father" and I think we can get some good angst out of this track if we keep that in mind. Especially the back half of the song with lyrics like "Do you think I'm frightening?" and "Mirrors shatter when I'm passing, broken glass and crashing" since he is just a reflection of his dad (to others at least). Also song good.

KENT + Goodbye Mr A by The Hoosiers: Mfw the disillusionment with authority sets in. I think the vibe fits when he had that little epiphany about how adults are fucked- not perfect but it gets the idea across me thinks. + I'm Gonna Win by Rob Cantor: Ties into his need to "win" aka be the best at everything, be in charge, all that jazz! Hell do whatever it takes to be successful, even if it hurts. That was a little emo + Toba the Tura by Forgive Durden ft Chris Conley: Not to be emo again but "They say you're gifted, well I just see a scared kid. They must have flipped it, your skills are latent. O, you snuffed the glow. Replaced it with coals. Threw away the throne... This mess that you've made, it's a six-foot grave. It's a home for your lonesome bones that remain. We'll disappear, but you'll stay here to rot" AND SO ON AND SO FOURTH representing his fall after it was revealed he was sick. He was referred to as "the uncrowned king" and was on top of the world but then POOF that all crumbled and it was made out that he basically deserved what happened to him. It would be fun to make a pmv of him with this song (Simplifying my thoughts a bit because Ive already written a LOT)

NEWT + I Earn My Life by Lemon Demon: Ok a little Kentcore but Im actually having a hard time coming up with songs for Newton so here we are, they can share. Newt existential crisis moment time I guess + Know How by The Crane Wives: POV Newt struggles with going through with the plans he makes to keep everyone safe (stopping Max from touching Kent, going back into the cabin, etc) "I am not brave, I am not brave, I keep my focus on what is safe, You drew a line, made up your mind, And now I'm struggling to realize" And also maybe struggling with his place in the group and as a person in general- all that living through his cousin thing. "I gotta wrap my head around, What my heart is telling me, I've been trying to drown it out, Just because I know what I am, I am supposed to do now, Doesn't mean I know, Doesn't mean I know how" + On The Outside by Oingo Boingo: Idk man. Hes on the outside lookin in!! Loner nerd!! Its ok though, we still love him
