Well, it's not holiday time anymore, but here's a holiday themed outfit I wore earlier this month for afternoon tea at the Ritz. (It’s also red and Lunar New Year, so...)
I had been looking for this dress for a few years and obtained it a few months ago, so I'm both happy to have it and wear it! The red velveteen material lends a lovely richness to the relatively simple cut, which I also coorded rather simply.
However...this dress is quite notorious for color transfer in this colorway. I was aware of it, so I chose a pink-toned blouse so any possible transfer wouldn't be too distressing😫
I've also tried 3 soaks in dye fixative type solutions, which has helped a little, but I think there's just something about the material JetJ chose to use that makes it want to transfer on rubbing.

One super funny thing about the French Rev (that Victor Hugo even references in Les Mis) is the way it altered naming conventions, resulting in tons of WILD amazing ridiculous names!
Basically what happened was— during the French Rev the laws around registering names were relaxed, so people started giving extremely revolutionary names to themselves and their babies.
Sadly Napoleon’s government later cracked down on this. When Napoleon came into power he passed a restrictive law mandating that people had to choose among a list of “normal” names, banning the weird revolution ones, because he was a spineless coward afraid of the power these names had. The restrictive naming laws weren’t repealed until late in the 20th century.
But anyway here are some of my favorite French Rev baby names (taken from this list):
Mort Aux Aristocrates -“Death to Aristocrats”
Amour Sacré de la Patrie l’an Trois -“Sacred Love of the Fatherland Year III”
Lagrenade —“The Grenade”
Droit de l’Homme Tricolor “Right of Man Tricolor”
Égalité — “Equality”
Régénérée Vigueur— “Regenerated Strength”
Marat, ami du peuple -“Marat, friend of the people”
Marat, défenseur de la Patrie—“Marat, defender of the Fatherland”
La Loi-“The Law”
Philippe Thomas Ve de bon coeur pour la République — “Philippe Thomas ‘Go with a good heart for the Republic’”
Raison —“Reason”
Simon Liberté ou la Mort —“Simon “Freedom or Death””
today I offer you tiny Enjolras, tomorrow, who knows?
(also for the translation: « les capitalistes à la lanterne! » or “capitalists to the lamp post!” uses the french revolutionary expression “to the lampost”, basically calling for ppl to be hanged… If you’re at all familiar with french revolution songs it’s most famous in a line from le Ça Ira, «les aristocrates à la lanterne »… so, the more you know!)
The most excellent thing about Astarion's story as a metaphor for abuse and how it's kept perpetuated in a cycle of sick, twisted minds corrupting those below them into their own image is how truly pathetic they made Cazadorr.
Cazadorr's introduced to us through Astarion's eyes - the eyes of a terrified, runaway victim - so of course the information we're being given is that he is this all - powerful, invincible creature, a vampire lord alligned with evil beyond comprehension, possessing mysterious powers, he seems worse than Gortash, the Absolute and Myrkul himself. He can turn into mist! He could be walking into the camp right this moment! It makes every sense that Astarion sees his tormentor in this way and is paranoid that he'll jump out of the nearest shadow. After 200 years of abuse, he has every right to do so.
But what Cazadorr truly is?
Other than the facade of a local aristocrate, how powerful he really is? Especially without his spawns, who do his dirty work and provide him with sustenance? He's never bested anyone. The only ones who truly suffered at his hands were the innocent fools or drunk idiots. Outside of the city, he doesn't have much influence or reach, which he admits himself in his journal. Not even counting in the fact that he is himself an abuse victim who didn't find strength to break out of the cycle and deep inside him, he wishes for death. What kind of an actual threat he is, compared to what Tav with her gang bested before him?
That's right. In the bigger picture, Cazadorr is overwhelmingly miserable and pathetic. He is cruel, manipulative, cunning, but he is no great threat those he has under his heel see him as.
And it goes to show what kind of people abusers of any sort are. Lost, pitiable, small - minded, disgusting, trying to build their own might and illusion of power through the suffering of others, hiding from the world in their dens while desperately trying to maintain their illusion of powerful grasp they have on everything around them. And deep down, they know it's all a lie.
Cazadorr knew that too, but he lost himself in the endless circle of torment so long ago that there was nothing left of him but hunger and cruelty, that was all he knew, so that was all he chased after - the power Ritual of Ascension would have granted him. Actual power, perhaps. Not the illusion of it he's been hanging onto for centuries.
Abusers are the truly pathetic and disgusting ones. Puny, tainted minds wreaking havoc in the world to make sense of the pain and misery inside them. Not their victims, who they tried to make into their own image.
