I love the atmosphere of the Metroid games and a huge part of that is the music and sound design. The first game has one of my favorite NES soundtracks, and establishes the franchise’s musical identity as sounding very “alien”; there’s a lot of chromatic notes, compound meters, and eerie silences.
The Game Boy sequel is much weirder, with frequently changing time signatures, no apparent keys, and intentionally discordant intervals. The Metroid battle theme cuts off the phrase halfway through at seemingly random, so it makes it seem like game glitched and skipped 2 beats, but the fights demand so much attention you can’t figure out the pattern to it. The Chozo Ruins theme alone drove me nuts, because despite not being catchy at all it became stuck in my head, especially with that echo across 3 octaves.
Super Metroid’s soundtrack is perhaps the highlight of the entire series. Samus Aran’s theme, which would appear across many titles, is so darkly triumphant, a perfect motif. The ambience of many of the “safe” rooms sounds like nothing you would ever hear on earth. Ridley’s theme is in 5|4, with the mission impossible style “2 long beats, 2 fast beats” that makes it seem like the track is speeding up halfway through each measure then laying off the gas again, which makes for a frantic fight. The “item obtained” jingle is as memorable as Zelda’s, but darker.
Metroid Dread, the most recent Metroid game, has some great themes as well, like Ferenia’s theme, where the bass and left hand piano eventually become deliciously out of sync, and it carries the tradition of ominous ambience and tense battle music, but I truly think the prime trilogy nailed the sound design in particular. Everything - from your footsteps, to the creature noises, to the charging of your power beam, to the scanning noise or static, sounds exactly the way it should. And the music itself is so damn good. Honestly, I think Magmoor Caverns is perfection. It’s a revamp of Norfair from Super Metroid, using the Phrygian scale (yum!), dramatic chanting, and it just keeps building up, and up…
Man, I love Metroid’s soundtrack.

please stop sexualizing anonymous, tank, riot or literally anyone else involved w their caliber of fame. you are delegitimizing their work, and with riot and tank i fear people are trying to find out their identities along with this. please. stop. the first few jokes were funny and its okay to be attracted to them but writing wattpad fics about anonymous and and them is severely inappropriate. you are making their efforts look like a joke. yes there is a difference between finding someone attractive and making them into a joke. thirst all you want but do it on your own time. stop writing fics. it isnt cute or quirky. its never. NEVER. okay to write sexual works of irl people. it is embarrassing behavior to witness or participate in. by making them all uwu daddy publicly you are making them into a joke or just something to thirst over. stop it is never okay to sexualize real people without their consent. stop sending anonymous unsolicited nudes. stop dming or @ ing them callign them daddy and other inappropriate names. imagine if people treated you like this. they are REAL PEOPLE and REAL PROTESTERS fighting for change. fighting for civil rights. basic human rights. making all of this is extremely rude to any person, let alone someone trying to help the world. they never asked for this. dont blame any of these people if they walk out because of what you people did and how youre treating them. they are real people with lives. all of them. fanart and edits and other supportive movements are fine but sexualization is crossing so many lines. if you understood the weight of the situation you wouldnt be treating it like this. it is insanely insensitive and youre boiling it down to a meme, a joke. stop doing this. if youre going to act like this you might as well change your fist icons and take out blm from your page. this is a real life issue, a serious situation, not a joke. take this situation more seriously. it is so disappointing to see. dont be upset if they disappear because of how you guys are treating them.

This Ibanez SRAS7 model just might be the most insane bass I've seen. 7 strings, first 4 are roundwound fretted w/ rosewood and the last 3 are flatwound fretless w/ bubinga. Tuned to ADGEADG. This thing is a fucking beast.

Don’t get me wrong I’m a big mcr fan I was in the emo trenches back in the day but mcr fandom bloggers acting like they’re some obscure unsigned hardcore punk band that performs in basements and only distributes their music on cassettes with the liner notes done in sharpie is funny as hell. they are a mainstream emo pop act with number one singles and triple platinum albums that sells out giant arenas. Yeah I’m sure all of us have been bullied for liking them at some point or another in middle school but that doesn’t change any of that. You can love the band, they got me through some hard as shit times for sure, none of this diminishes the impact they’ve had on you, but you’re straight up lying when you act like they’re some subversive punk group nobody will ever understand lol

I recently learned that guitar hero’s engine only allows you to create songs with 4 as the bottom number in the time signature. But, you might be thinking, guitar hero has songs from Tool and Fall of Troy and Soundgarden! There’s no way those songs are entirely in 4! You’re correct. How did they get around this? By abruptly accelerating and slowing the BPM to roughly mimic the actual song. The most horrifying example? The 21/32 bar in master of puppets is charted as 5|4 at nearly double BPM to get as close to it as possible.

has anyone else noticed that the ridley boss theme from super metroid is super similar to one of the riffs from panic attack by dream theater?
Below is the bass line from Panic Attack by Dream Theater, starting at :29. It's in Cm.
Tumblr media
Below is the bass line from Vs. Ridley from Super Metroid, which repeats with minor variations throughout the entire song. It's also in Cm (although the arranger for this particular sheet music for some reason left the key signature in C and just added accidentals)
Tumblr media
If you ignore the consistent low C played between the moving notes, it's an identical rhythm, and with the exception of Panic Attack opting for that dissonant F# over Super Metroid's flat 2nd, it's the same notes as well. What really made this stood out to me though was that they're both in 5|8, which is an unusual time signature. Most western music typically has 3, 4, or 6 beats in a measure. Using 5|8 here really gives both pieces a frenetic and urgent feeling, almost like the measure is being chopped short. Combined with the dissonance of that tritone/flat 2nd, it's all the more jarring, which is why I think Ridley's theme is one of the most effective boss tracks of all time.
Anyway, I don't think this was like plagiarism or anything, i just find it really neat! The Metroid franchise (particularly Super Metroid) is fond of strategically using off-sounding time signatures to create this very alien, unsettling soundscape, that I adore.

Grunge is just never gonna be replicated again. I don’t care how many fuzz pedals you use or how many strings you bend, you will never be a late 80’s Seattle band playing the cheapest, ugliest guitars with the sloppiest technique imaginable to produce some of the most divine music ever created.
