Hi Maven!! Same q to everyone this week: what are your top 3 wincest episodes, and why?

a) top 3 sam/dean episodes

3. A Very Supernatural Christmas: has the samulet (their engagement ring, obviously!), you can palpably feel the isolation, the neglect, it's very two-children-in-a-motel-esque. and of course, the final scene, where i think, if there was any point in the series aside from the barn scene in which they would have said "i love you," it would have been there. the deep long stare, the watery eyes, the fact that they both know dean will be gone within the year, and then... "do you feel like watching the game?" ahhhhhhh drives me nuts

2. Swan Song: their love literally!!!!! saves the world, i mean come on. it has the whole wincest montage that you could literally set a richard siken poem to, or a taylor swift song to (look i know those are vastly different things but. bear with me), and it would just feel right. dean finally lets sam do things on his own. he lives because sam tells him to. sam manages to revoke his possession consent because of how much he's in love with dean, even as his fist is smashing dean's face into a pulp. ok i have to stop or i'm going to start crying in this goddamn airport.

Playthings: obviously. gothic horror episode of all time. picture-perfect family in the outside, secret sibling hidden upstairs. the way sam and dean's codependency is paired with that of the grandmother and her ghostly sister. the face-stroking. the almost kiss. god i swear it always looks like they're gonna kiss. sam writhing on the bed. dean staring at him like that. the subtext was about to bust through the screen, what with the acting and the way the plot and the meta-plot fit together perfectly. catherine tosenberger said it much better than i can, go read her article in TWC about wincest if you haven't!

b) top 3 family-horror-what-the-incestuous-freudian-fuck-is-going-on-here episodes

2. Devil's Trap: azazel uses john's body in a sexual manner against both sam and dean--primarily the latter but sam gets it, too. it's a chilling scene and really cements that this is what spn is about: never being able to escape the family. sam learns partly of azazel's plot, dean gets his daddy issues flayed onto him, and all through the eyes of the father. it's so well done.

3. Skin: imo the most damning thing the shifter says is, "i will be sorry to lose this skin. your brother's got a lot of great qualities. you should appreciate him more than you do." uh...what? the way he ties up sam and plans on torturing him also aligns with the shifter's pattern of turning into the husband and beating up the wife. another HMM moment actually comes from dean himself, when he tells sam that none of his friends will ever understand him and that dean's the only one who can...it's very isolating, kind of abuser tactics, and just. whew. this was episode SIX!!

In the Beginning: come on you knew i was gonna say this. aside from the obvious moments of "mom is a babe" (and remember, dean invokes sam into this moment as well..."sammy, wherever you are..."), samuel!azazel leaning over dean and smelling him, and samuel!azazel kissing mary--passionately returned(?), may i add, the plot itself sets up the winchester family as this enclosed, inbred unit. mary's kiss with her possessed father seal's sam's fate as part of azazel's army. the sexuality she shares with her father makes her son's blood diseased and cursed. the family line is tainted by incest. her kiss is what allows sam and dean to grow up that way, to become so codependent, what allows the moments of avsc, swan song, and playthings to happen! in the beginning. this begins the cycle of selling and saving souls--mary for john, john for dean, dean for sam. it's literally THEE spn episode, perhaps even more than playthings. even though sam's barely in it, his fate hangs over the whole episode, and this is full house of wincest at its finest.

November: Loss & Life

From the cooling weather to the turning colors of the leaves, Autumn is a time of transformation and reflection. Of mourning and celebration. It's a bittersweet season; the falling leaves remind us that in the sorrow loss, there is also great beauty in letting go.

Accordingly, the All Valley Skills Challenge theme for November is:

Below, you will find this month's prompts. Our mods have created a series of moodboards, each inspired by a Festival of the Dead from a culture represented in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai universe. We've also included a short description of the unique traditions of each:

Dia de los Difuntos - Ecuador Celebrated on November the 2nd, and coinciding with All Souls Day, Ecuador's Dia de los Difuntos (Day of the Deceased) is a holiday that combines Catholic tradition with the death rituals of the indigenous Quechua people. On this day, families gather to honor and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have passed away. Traditionally, they visit cemeteries to clean graves and to bring gifts of flowers and food to share with those they've lost. The belief is that the food will help give souls strength for their journey to the afterlife. Stalls selling guaguas de pan (bread babies - a sweet bread piped with colorful icing, shaped to resemble a doll or baby) and colada morada (a thick, dark purple corn drink, served hot) line the streets, along with vendors selling other treats and grave decorations. In rural areas, it is common for families to dress in their finest clothes and share a picnic together in the cemetery. The festivities also often include carnivals and parades.

Kyu-Bon (Obon) - Okinawa/Japan The Obon Festival, also called Kyu-Bon in Okinawa, is celebrated throughout both Okinawa and Japan. While the holiday is based on the solar calendar in mainland Japan, in Okinawa, it follows the lunar calendar. This means it can fall anywhere from mid-July to early September. Always starting on a Monday, the celebration lasts for three days. It is customary for Okinawans from all over to Japan to return to their hometowns, in order to observe the holiday with their families. On the first day (Unke), families hang glowing lanterns outside and leave their doors and windows open, to guide and welcome the spirits of their ancestors home. They also leave offerings such as sugarcane sticks and uchikabi paper (money for the afterlife) on the family altar. On the second day (Nakanuhi), families prepare food, visit other relatives homes, and exchange gifts. The final day (Ukui), is a time for feasting, celebrating, and sharing stories. Prayers and goodbyes are said before sending the spirits back to the afterlife. Food, handwritten notes, and uchikabi paper are placed in a large bowl as a gift for the ancestors. The contents are then burned, so the spirits can take the offerings with them when they go. Over the course of the festival, colorfully clad Eisa dancers march through the streets, entertaining both the crowds and the spirits by dancing, chanting, drumming, and playing folk songs on the sanshin.

Chuseok - South Korea Celebrated on the full moon of the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar for about a 3 day holiday. People return home bearing gifts, visit and clean grave sites, and share a feast. Parts of these feasts include songpyeon (a type of colorful rice cake), types of Hangwa like the honey cookie yakgwa, fruit, baekju (a type of alcohol), jeon (savory pancakes), japchae, bulgogi and more. Food will also be set out at a in-home memorial for the ancestors and those who've passed. Games are played like Yut Nori, as well as sports like Ssireum (a type of wrestling), and Taekkyon (a type of martial arts). There is also a dance, Ganggangsullae.

All Souls Day (Il Giorno Dei Morti) - Italy Also coinciding with All Souls Day, Il Giorno Dei Morti is the Italian Day of the Dead. While November 1st (All Saints Day) is the day to honor the Catholic saints, November 2nd is reserved for honoring dearly departed loved ones. On this day, families flock to cemeteries in order to pay their respects to the dead by lighting candles and laying flowers - customarily, bouquets of chrysanthemums - on their graves. In Sicily and other parts of southern Italy, parents will hide small gifts, such as toys, sweets and Pupi ri Zuccaru (sugar puppets) around the house for their children to find. The children are then told that the gifts were left for them by their deceased relatives, who came to visit them in the night. Traditional foods vary from region to region. Pan dei morti (bread of the dead) is consumed in almost every part of the country. Other treats include Frutta di Martorana (marzipan sweets from Sicily), and Ossa dei morti (bones of the dead - crunchy, almond-flavored cookies that are shaped to resemble bones.)

Here's a moodboard I made for the @allvalleyskillschallenge. There was supposed to be a story that went with it, but life (a.k.a. my parents and their tiny, hollow bones) once again got in the way. I'd hoped maybe I could at least get the first chapter posted before Halloween, but it was sadly not meant to be. But I thought I'd at least share this, and a brief summary/preview of the story.

When six-year-old Robby begs his dad to take him Trick or Treating, Johnny has to scramble to come up with a plan. Having recently been laid off from his construction job and struggling to make ends meet, he realizes he can't afford the Ninja Turtle costume that Robby really wants. So he's forced to get creative. After spending a whole day DIY-ing him a costume, Johnny makes use of his rich kid past and takes Robby trick or treating in his old stomping grounds in the Hills. By the end of the night, Robby has a pail overflowing with full-sized candy bars and Johnny has a tired, happy kid. They're just about to call it an evening, when Robby sees a cool TMNT-themed jack-o-lantern on a porch, and begs his dad to ring one, last doorbell...

(AU where Shannon ran off much earlier, leaving a struggling Johnny to raise Robby on his own. Pre-Lawrusso.)

I really love the idea of this story, so hopefully I'll get it written when things calm down. Until then, I hope everyone has a Happy Halloween!!

Good morning! This is such a good question! One of the most “oh god they’re a couple” episodes to me is AVSC but that’s way too early for me to want it to be confirmed. S11 is true brothermarriage sweet spot to me, after the push-pull of seasons 4-10. So I think i’d want it to be Baby or Red Meat, the best episodes of the season (to me lol). I love them in like a situationship up until like 12…so maybe just a kiss from Dean after Sam sleeps with Piper as like a “yeah, but you’re still mine” hehe.

In Red Meat it nearly IS confirmed tbh but after Michelle talks about seeing the man she loved die…I’d love an explicit confirmation from Dean that he was feeling the same about Sam in more than just a brother way ;)

sooomewhere on tumblr i saw someone mention being of the opinion [x character] is dayman

and i thought why not add my 2 cents to this bottomless pit of a website

so basically, this post is abt the dayman and the nightman so like beware bc yk (if u dont, 1 - y r u even reading this?, 2 - go watch iasip)

also idk shit abt psychology n all that stuff sooo

(and like i went to the fandom wiki to look up the lyrics bc its easier seeing all the words in front of u, but accidentally read a bit of the article and yea some of the stuff m gonna mention is on the fandom wiki alr so like totally unoriginal ideas of mine but whatevs)

so basic info

the nightman:

- charlie clearly has conflicting feelings "i think i love you", "you make me wanna die", etc (SDDARP)

- this whole thing: "every night you come into my room and pin me down and i try to fight you", "i can't fight you, man", etc (SDDARP)

- oddly, the only real description of the nightman is "it's just two men" (aka nightman is a, well, man) and "strong arms", "sexy hands" (SDDARP)

- wants charlies soul??? "at last the boy's soul is mine!" (TNC)

- likes them sleeping "he's sleeping right over there! just the way you like 'em!" (TNC)

the dayman:

- fights the nightman "fighter of the nightman" (SDDARP & TNC)

- is (at least partly) charlie "i fought the nightman, lived as dayman" (TNC)

- "champion of the sun", "master of [...] friendship for everyone" (SDDARP & TNC): these parts were added by dennis in SDDARP but stayed in the song (so idk whether to count them or not)

- "master of karate" (SDDARP & TNC)

my interpretation is that the dayman and nightman are embodiments of things affecting charlie, like dayman would be [x] affecting charlie, nightman would be [z] affecting charlie (tho i will be referring to [x] as dayman and [z] as nightman)

before that, info on characters

uncle jack:

- unusual obsession with his hands (DGD, GFT:SH, etc)

- shared a room with charlie for a while, "wresteled" and charlie supposedly stayed awake the whole night during that time (TGR)

- touchy toward charlie, makes him uncomfortable (TGR, DGD, MVP:TTOTC, OLH:ASC, etc)

- weird about kids (DGD, GFT:SH)

mac:

- thinks he can do karate, charlie admits to thinking otherwise (MAC:WT; PP:TWBIP)

- childhood friends with charlie (AVSC, etc), officially BFFs since MBTW

- was supposed to play the dayman in the play (TNC)

- kicked charlie out of the band (i swear this is relevant; SDDARP)

dennis:

- officially BFFs with charlie since MBTW

- was supposed to play the nightman in the play, although supposedly to avoid the kiss scene with dee (TNC)

- came to team up with charlie after also getting kicked outta the band, wrote the dayman song with him right afterwards (SDDARP)

now, the whole "uncle jack is the nightman" thing is nth new but i do wanna point at the hand thing:

uncle jack is very uh what do i call this? self conscious? embarrassed? abt his "small hands"

and yet the nightman explicitly has "strong arms" & "sexy hands"

so i see 3 possibilities

1) a warped view bc charlie was young and yk everythin seems bigger when ure smaller

2) uncle jack was obsessively muttering how comparably to a small charlie the hands look big n manly and whatever else

3) charlie subconsciously tried to detach uncle jack from the nightman and went for the one noticeable thing abt his uncle and inverted it on the nightman, thus making it seem impossible for them to be the same person

again, i have no clue abt anything brain related so this is just a local dumbass rambling (also it might b a mix of em or smth completely different ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

now, for dayman:

lets explore if one of charlies BFFs could b dayman

mac:

karate might be referring to him, childhood friends so he was probly there for charlie (whether he knew abt it or not), he was cast as the dayman (tho changed it himself to nightman), dennis was gonna b the nightman

dennis:

was also friends (ig) with charlie in high school (never stated *when* the "growing up & fightin the nightman" thing happened), he was cast as nightman to avoid the kiss, cheered charlie up after mac kicked them both outta the band (whether dennis intended to or not), they wrote the dayman song together

it might be both, it might be neither

so what if its someone (or smth) else?

lets see...if "dayman" helped fight the nightman (as in: the effect it had on charlie) then isnt the dayman...a coping mechanism?

(ONCE AGAIN, IDK SHIT ABT BRAINS)

and if dayman is a coping mechanism that helps fend off the nightman...

well, what does charlie do when he is not coping well with smth?

- he has a bad room in the bar where he breaks shit (TGGHH), he bit a mall santa after the revelation of what his mum was up to on christmases (in CGM mac says when charlie got excited his face would turn purple n hed start biting things; AVSC), etc

- he gets high, a lot...literally in the eps where he writes the damn song he goes home n huffs spray paint (SDDARP)

i cant think of more atm but like yea

and as a kid, did he have an outlet for his violence? yes, he threw rocks at shit and whatever else (AVSC, etc)

did he have access to stuff that could get him high? yes, he was literally huffin glue in AVSC as. a. child.

now, as for the karate, friendship, champion of sun stuff

champion of the sun: metaphors, people, metaphors; also just the scene in SDDARP where charlie is all negative, dennis comes in & lets the daylight in, all of a sudden charlie is more positive

karate & friendship: charlie thinks karate is cool, he maybe thought it would b awesome to make dayman do karate; or he took a look at his friends (n probably support system) and was like damn they make me not feel that bad and included master of karate bc mac (idk y no dennis, maybe bc childhood friends, maybe bc karate = fighting, maybe bc whats more badass than karate?)

so all in all, my conclusion is dayman is just all his coping mechanisms & support system rolled into one badass personification
