let’s say tomorrow we declared every third or fourth-level administrative division in the world to be independent--exactly which degree doesn’t matter, just that we’re talking about very small units that are probably too small to function effectively on their own. then in a series of plebiscites, we let each decide on what neighbors they want to form larger associations with, and then those groupings get to vote on which of the new groupings they want to join with, and so on and so forth, until no top-level groupings remain that mutually wish to merge, and we declare all the remaining top-level groupings sovereign states. the only criteria for all this is that associations should be roughly contiguous, and approximately compact--we don’t want a bunch of Baarle-Hertogs here--

(the exact mechanics for all this can be up to your own individual implementation of the thought experiment)

--then I wonder what the world’s borders would look like at the end of that process. Obviously, a lot of cultural/national borders would get recapitulated. A lot of secessionists would get their hoped-for independence. But I also imagine a lot of areas that now are currently divided by a border might take the obvious step of removing that border--Seattle and Vancouver would benefit enormously from being in the same polity, as would Detroit and Windsor, and even cities that are in the same country like the Kansas Cities or the Texarkanas would probably benefit from erasing the artificial boundary between them. Some awkward exclaves like Ceuta might prefer to remain awkward exclaves, but would all of them? And what interesting new microstates might spring up?

Be careful in which mailbox you put your letter in.

The mail is delivered by PostNL in the Dutch area and bpost in the Belgian area. So if you post something in Baarle-Hertog, in the Belgian mailbox and need to be deliver to the Dutch side, you mail would technically go to Turnhout then to Brussels, flown by plane to Amsterdam, then by truck via Tilburg, back to Baarle-Nassau. Maybe just post it on the Dutch side mailbox so it’s delivered quicker ;-).

But aside from the post being served by both countries, the location of a house decides if it has access to Dutch or Belgian utility companies. Electricity from Eandis in Baarle-Hertog or from TenneT in Baarle-Nassau. Cable TV and internet from Telenet in Hertog, but from a range or providers in Nassau. Telephone service from Belgacom in one, KPN in the other. Even refuse is collected separately for both villages. Some services are shared however, the Dutch companies Brabant and Enexis provide the water and gas supplies respectively in both villages.

Het cultuurcentrum Baarle kan met ingang van volgende week gedeeltelijk weer open. Dat blijkt uit het aanvullend en verdiepend onderzoek waartoe beide burgemeesters opdracht hebben gegeven. Deskundigen hebben alle plafonds van het cultuurcentrum geïnspecteerd. De lokalen van de academie voor Muziek en Woord, de aula en nog enkele andere lokalen op de begane grond kunnen weer veilig open. De bibliotheek blijft tijdelijk nog gesloten. Voor sommige andere lokalen is het, net als voor de bibliotheek, nodig om bijkomende werken uit te voeren. Na deze werkzaamheden bekijken de burgemeesters van Baarle-Hertog en Baarle-Nassau opnieuw welke lokalen bijkomend opengesteld kunnen worden. Cultuurcentrum Omdat slechts een deel van het CCB weer opengesteld kan worden, moet worden bezien hoe, waar en wanneer de verschillende Baarlese verenigingen gebruik kunnen maken van de beschikbare ruimtes. Het team van het cultuurcentrum Baarle gaat dit coördineren. Zij gaan hiervoor contact opnemen met de verschillende verenigingen en organisaties. Maandagmiddag 19 februari besloten de gemeenten Baarle-Nassau en Baarle-Hertog het centrum Baarle uit veiligheidsoverwegingen direct te sluiten. Aanleiding was het plotseling naar beneden vallen van een deel van het plafond in de harmoniezaal. Beide burgemeesters van Baarle-Nassau en Baarle-Hertog hebben grote waardering voor het team van het cultuurcentrum Baarle, als ook voor de verenigingen en instellingen die samen met de lokale ondernemers hebben geholpen om snel een ander tijdelijk onderkomen te vinden voor de getroffen gebruikers.
