Food, Friendship and Comfort
This fic is part of the @critter-genfic-events Bingo to fulfill the Comfort and Cooking slots. [Check my bingo card and other works here.] Set post-Campaign 2 and Mighty Nein Reunited. Read on AO3
Beauregard Lionett’s days as a Cobalt Soul Expositor are either dreary and dull with endless paperwork or exhausting with back-and-forth trips to Rexxentrum to track the Cerberus Assembly. Today is one of the latter days where she trades a warm, sunny Zadash for a gloomy and cold Rexxentrum.
Beauregard scheduled to meet her friend Caleb for breakfast this morning, so as soon as she steps out of the teleportation circle connecting the Rexxentrum and Zadash archives, she speeds past the guardians and archivists without a word and exits the dimly lit library onto the bustling street of the capital of the Dwendalian Empire. The feeling is immediate as the cold hits her uncovered skin and makes her curse between her teeth. Beau doesn’t have time to linger, so she follows the familiar cobblestone streets, ignoring the people rushing to and from work, the colorful buildings, and the heavy presence of crown guards in the more seedy areas.
The cottage that appears when Beauregard turns on another crossroad is a sight that makes the corners of her lips curl and her skin tingle in anticipation of warmth. She should have known better by now and brought a warm jacket along. The two small planter boxes out front are still full of tall, green plants, possibly kept alive in the cold by some arcane means from the owner of the cottage, and as Beau approaches, she notices that it either has recently been harvested or is yet to produce green beans.
Beau knocks at the rustic door, and where the motion would usually be followed by the sound of a chair scraping the wooden floor, it is now followed by silence. Weird. Caleb knew she was coming. Even if he is still in his arcane tower, he would have certainly set up alarms that would have triggered by now. Beau knocks again, louder this time, but still, no answer comes from the other side. She tries to peek in the side window through the small gap in the curtain but can’t see anything out of the ordinary. The house is intact, with no signs of a struggle (or worse, an attack). Beauregard doesn’t want to expend the single use of her sending stone yet, lest it be needed later. However, the cold is bothering her right now, so she does what any good friend would do if they suspected their friend might be up to something or in a difficult situation: she picks Caleb’s lock. What are the chances that he has arcane wards against thieves? Highly, Beau tells herself as the lockpick clicks. Too late now. However, the door opens with a creak, but nothing explodes in her face. Beau sighs in relief as she steps into the musty interior and relocks the door behind her.
“Caleb?” She calls out to the empty house. It’s cold inside. The hearth is full of ash, and there is a layer of dust on every surface as if someone hasn’t cleaned in weeks. Beau inspects every room, each darker and emptier than the one before until she finally reaches the back room where she knows Caleb often tutors children who didn’t get accepted to the academy. This room, too, is empty and dark. Dust covers the desks and chairs, a few pieces of old parchment are spread out, and empty and dry bottles of ink sit forgotten. At first glance, this would be an average room. Messy, yes, but ordinary. But Beauregard knows better. She knows what to look for and finds it in a corner, slightly obscured by a tall bookshelf, a shimmering door that leads into Caleb’s tower.
Beau is welcomed by a lit fireplace in the study, a spectral Bengal cat rubbing at her legs, and a mess of Caleb lying on the soft, plush couch by the fire, reading a book about Dunemancy. He is alive but looks almost as bad as he did when they first met. Caleb’s shiny red hair is full of knots, although still in a ponytail, his beard is shaggy and unkempt, his clothes are wrinkly, and there are a few coffee stains on his shirt. Caleb is indeed a mess, which can only mean one thing.
“How long?” Beauregard asks in a harsh tone that means she will take no bullshit. Caleb lifts an eye from his book, finally acknowledging his friend’s presence, but he doesn’t reply. “Caleb, how long has it been?” Beau presses on. She strides confidently to where the man lies on the couch and effortlessly removes the book from his hold, closing it with a thud. Caleb stares at her for a moment, then finally greets her with the hoarse voice of someone who hasn’t spoken in days, “Hello to you too, Beauregard.”
Beau does quick math in her head. It hasn’t been that long since they last saw each other, perhaps two months, not even that long. She remembers Caleb saying then that he was waiting for a visit from Essek, but those were usually short and never resulted in a depressive mood like this. Something must have happened during their Xorhasian friend’s stay, and if the empty look in Caleb’s eyes is any indication of it, then Beau is determined to help and comfort him in any way she can.
“Clean up before I message Jester to tell her you smell and look like a hobo again. Just when she was starting to let it go away…” Beau threatens, scrunching her nose at him. Caleb nods and rises from his nest of pillows and blankets with the groan of someone whose joints are stiff from being in the same position for a long time. Beau shakes her head in displeasure and stares at the back of the man’s head as he lifts through the arcane elevator and disappears above the central iris.
Caleb meets Beauregard an hour later, freshly clean and bear-trimmed, in the dining room, where they plan their day over eggs, pancakes, and pocket bacon. Caleb doesn’t mention Essek, and Beau doesn’t ask questions about the state she found her Empire friend, so the only names said aloud are those of the Cerberus Assembly, particularly Ludinus Da’leth, who is up to no good. Caleb shares with Beau the detailed information he gathered since their last time together, information that cannot fit the 25 words of the sending spell they use for their daily reports. Beau is glad he took the official position at the Soltryce Academy, not for his proximity to the Assembly members, but for how much happier Caleb has been since he was allowed to teach and shape young minds.
When they separate hours later at the gates that lead up to the school, Caleb’s shoulders are lighter, and his smile brighter. Beau knows whatever happened is still lurking in the shadows, but she won’t pull unless he wants to push. So, before she turns her back to him and returns to the archives to fill out report after report, Beau throws her friend an invitation, “Why don’t you stop by later to have dinner with Yasha and me? She would love to see you.”
“I’ll think about it,” Caleb says, but from the look in his eyes, Beau knows he will knock at her door with a bottle of wine and apple tarts. So be it. She waves him goodbye and leaves.
—
Caleb is happy to find that Zadash isn’t as cold tonight as Rexxentrum. The smaller city’s lights are already sparkling against the dusky sky, and the aromas of food and burning wood fill the residential area around him. He knows he could have teleported directly to Beauregard and Yasha’s house, but he would hate to intrude on them, so Caleb teleported into a narrow alleyway not far from the center of town and strolled to their friends’ abode. The house is just as he remembers it. Not large, but cozy. The garden that Caduceus has been teaching Yasha how to care for is dormant as the first signs of winter approach, but the ivy growing up the front of the house is still there, larger and taller than the last time Caleb saw it. He stops at the iron gate, peering through the open curtains to see Yasha stirring a pot on the stove. He knows she has been learning how to cook from a neighbor, not always successful, according to Beau’s reviews in the few words they share about their day. Meanwhile, the tall Aasimar’s wife is just finishing setting the table for three people. How Beau knew Caleb would show up, he doesn’t know. Maybe she hoped? Perhaps she just… knew. Either way, Caleb is here now, crossing the iron gate, walking down the pebbled path towards the ivy-framed door, and knocking twice.
Beauregard opens the door with a smirk. She is wearing different clothes than Caleb saw her wear in the morning—more casual, comfortable clothes—her hair is still up in her signature bun, and she is still wearing some of her golden jewelry. The woman in front of him is not an Expositor of the Cobalt Soul anymore, but his friend from adventures that have been almost forgotten in time.
“Hello, Beauregard,” Caleb greets her sheepishly. Beau’s smirk gives room to a bright grin as she greets him back and steps away to let him in the house.
It’s a cozy, lived-in house (although a bit too messy for Caleb’s tastes) that smells of stew and sweets, where a small fireplace crackles in front of a comfy couch and a shaggy rug. The walls are adorned with art, paintings done by their tiefling friend of the Mighty Nein and their allies. Caleb’s favorite piece is definitely the large painting above the mantelpiece of their group of misfits, one that includes Mollymauk at one end, Kingsley at the other, and Essek smiling next to Caleb. Caleb has the same painting in his office in his small cottage (Jester painted one for everyone so they wouldn’t forget about them. So they could look upon it and smile, remember the memories of what they have been through, and soothe the sorrow of missing their friends).
“I’m glad you could join us, Caleb,” Yasha greets him, bending to give the man a bear hug. Beauregard must have told her wife the situation she found him in that morning because he sees compassion and comfort in Yasha’s eyes. Caleb merely nods and drapes his coat over the back of the couch. He produces a bottle of wine and a plate of apple tarts—not homemade today, though—that he kept in his private pocket dimension and hands it to Beau, who tuts at the wine label reprovingly but promptly uncorks it nonetheless.
Dinner doesn’t take long to be served, and it’s not half-bad (a vegetable stew with harvests from Beau and Yasha’s garden with a side of rustic bread also made by the latter). The conversation flows nicely between the three, sometimes pausing to sip on wine or to change the subject. Caleb listens attentively to Yasha’s tales about their neighbor, Martina, who has been teaching her new recipes to use their produce (she was, apparently, the one who taught Yasha the stew recipe they are eating). The conversation changes again to Beau and Caleb’s work tracking the Assembly, and the three discuss and share theories about Ludinus’s plans. Through it all, no one mentions the name of their drow friend, the war criminal who has been running from both the Empire and the Dynasty, which makes Caleb relax.
Essek doesn’t get the opportunity to visit often, and when he does, it’s in disguise, so Caleb has learned to cherish those fleeting moments. However, things seemed to have calmed down for a while, and Essek’s stay was extended to over a fortnight before chatter began, and the man departed again under the light of the moon. He hasn’t heard from his Xorhasian friend in weeks, which is not uncommon, but this separation has taken a harder hit on him. Beau clearly saw it that morning. She guessed from the state she found Caleb’s house in but didn’t ask, and neither did Yasha. Caleb knows the women will wait until he’s ready to share, and he’s thankful for that. He makes sure to give them a smile to convey his gratitude, and, in response, he is offered a place to stay overnight so he doesn’t have to return to his empty house and empty cold bed. Here, surrounded by two of his dearest friends, chatting happily about vegetables, fertilizer, and power-hungry mages, Caleb is still far from healed but on the mend, and the dark loneliness in his starts to vanish.

whenever shippers compare shadowgast and beauyasha I usually see it with Essek and Yasha being paralleled, and I do love the gardening buddies and Yasha telling Essek not to wait too long for love, but Essek and Beau vs Yasha and Caleb is much more compelling to me.
Beau and Essek are both young, rebellious and resentful prodigies from wealthy backgrounds with bad relationships with their parents. They’re both naturally suspicious loners. Both of them experience friendship and family for the first time with the Nein. I think it’s meaningful when Beau says “fuck, I like him,” after Essek opens up at dinner in the Xhorhouse; I think she relates to him a bit.
Caleb and Yasha have both been manipulated and mind controlled; have both done things they consider unforgivable. They have both experienced, and then lost, family and romantic love. They both lost time and memories, and eventually were found and saved by an unexpected friendship. Both their stories involve learning to live and love again, to find second chances.

Welcome to Critter Rarepair Reccs!
Hey y'all! Welcome to Critter Rarepair Reccs, a recommendation list aimed at fics written for ships that are largely under-represented, appreciated, and loved in our fandom! Now, let's address the elephant in the room first; rarepair is a misnomer here, knowingly. Some of the ships eligible to be recc'ed on this list might not be ones you'd consider a rarepair! So, the more proper welcome would be-
Welcome to Critter Underloved Ship Reccs
For brevity's sake, the URL is staying, though.
Now, it goes without saying, but before we get into the details here, let's get one thing clear: this blog is dedicated to spreading love and appreciation to fanworks and their creators. Ship hate of any kind will not be tolerated and will result in a block.
With that said, let's talk about the criteria for an underloved ship and why we're defining it the way we are.
Definition & Explantion
There is one qualifier for a ship to be eligible for this list: less than 100 fics were written for it and posted to Ao3 during 2023.
We landed on this metric for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it casts a very wide net for pairings while still narrowing the field a fair bit. The gulf of works between flagship pairings, endgame pairings, and some of the larger side/non-canon pairings is significant. Secondly, we wanted to take a look at how the fandom is currently, which is why we pivoted away from using the Wildflower System ( @cr-summer-wildflowers ) of excluding any pairing with more than 500 fics total. There are a number of pairings that were extremely popular at one point in time, but these days get far less love and attention. Let's take Widofjord for example. They have almost a thousand fics total and were in the Top 10 relationship tags for Critical Role on Ao3 for a long time. But last year? Only 27 fics were written for them. They have, functionally, become a rarepair.
So, to be fair to ships that exist in that same, nebulous space, we're looking at totals from last year, not lifetime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For illustration purposes, here are charts (compiled by the wonderful @spottedenchants ) showing how many fics were written for each PC/PC ship last year.
Ineligible Ships
Which ships, then, don't qualify under that definition? It's not a terribly long list. PC endgame relationships, primarily, a handful of non-canon pairings, and some prospective endgame ships. For simplicity's sake, we'll break them down by campaign.
Campaign 1: Perc'ahlia, Vaxleth, Pikelan, Perc'ildan
Campaign 2: Shadowgast, Beauyasha, Fjorester, Widomauk
Campaign 3: Imodna, Dorym, Ashrym
If one of these pairings is secondary or background to a fic, that's alright! But the fic shouldn't focus or center on them. It's also worth noting that polyamorous ships that include one of these pairs are also alright! Shadowidomauk, for example, only had 61 fics written for it last year, so they're in the clear! The same goes for Dashrym, as another example, as they've only ever had 36 fics written for them.
It is also worth noting all accepted submissions must be respectful of character’s canon sexualities; for example, we will not take fics that feature an M/F pairing of a lesbian character, even if said pairing fits the “rarepair” criteria.
The caveat to the above would be queerplatonic fic! There will be an option on the submission form to specify, to avoid confusion due to Ao3’s lack of a designated QPR relationship tag!
So when does the list open for submissions?
Very soon! February 7th, next Wednesday! The opening theme with be Fluff, and that list will be posted a week later, on Valentine’s Day, February 14th! I hope we’ll see you then! 🩷

Pinned Post II: Electric Boogaloo
Hi, I'm Chris! I'm updating my pinned post to be more streamlined so here we go.
I liveblog Critical Role every week and tag with "cr spoilers" up until Monday. This tag also gets used for Candela Obscura and any one-shots. Dimension 20 spoilers are labeled “d20 spoilers.”
This is primarily a Critical Role and Dimension 20 blog, but I contain multitudes. You will see a lot of random shit depending on my mood. I’m really into Hazbin Hotel right now, for example, so my blog is kinda inundated in that. Honestly I might as well admit I am also a Hazbin blog at this point. Sorry, women.
I write a lot of fic, which can be found on my AO3 here. I primarily write fic centered on minor/supporting characters. I'm also the author of the life in the margins of redemption and red roses and dead things series- more about these below.
I have a ko-fi if you'd like to give me a tip for any reason.
Tumblr media
My two big series are as follows:
red roses and dead things (or Roseverse), a canon divergent Hazbin Hotel (goes AU after 1x06) series that deals with working on continuing the story while I wait for new material. It is lore-heavy, Team as Family, and redemption-focused with focus on Huskerdust, Alastor and his deal, Lucifer and his relationship to Heaven and Hell and his family, and Charlie continuing to pursue her dreams. Also contains significant amounts of Helluva Boss because we’re not beholden to copyright here.
life in the margins of redemption (or LitMoR), a For Want of a Nail CR2 Canon Divergent series, is a duology (with additional side stories) that takes the alternate path outlined in the Harvest's Close session notes- Cree rescuing the Nein from the Gentleman's wrath should they betray him- and takes it a step further with Cree reviving Molly on the Glory Run Road and traveling with the Nein in the hopes of finding a way to bring Lucien back. It is extremely Canon Divergent, but does feature CR2 plots under radically different circumstances and with additional characters. It's worldbuilding heavy, character-driven, often dark, but has a guaranteed happy ending. You may heard of it as "that 1.5 million word fanfic series."
It is not canon compliant with TNEOL as I had finished OUADYA before TNEOL came out. While I use some elements from the novel, the backstory presented for Lucien and the Tombtakers in the series is entirely different.
More details, including links to the fics, beneath the cut.
THE MAIN STORIES.
Note that while the series features Fjorester, Beauyasha, and Widomauk as primary ships, it is above all a gen fic that focuses on the platonic relationships even more than the romantic ones. I cannot in good faith rec this fic to you if you HATE any of those ships, but I can say if you're indifferent/just want a plot and platonic relationship focus, this fic will appeal to you.
once upon a damn-you-all. Cree saves Molly on the Glory Run Road, sending the Nein's trajectory off the rails in a story about redemption, change, fate, and team-building. Also Molly having to contend with the Somnovem.
you can't deny high noon. The Nein continue their journey with an additional member- a reluctant, captive Lucien- as they continue to face numerous challenges while enemies lurk in the background. While OUADYA is mostly original plotlines, this fic follows the majority of the major plot beats of canon albeit a bit twisted around and out of order.
THE SIDE STORIES
While not necessary to read in order to understand the main duology, I feel like not reading them causes a loss of impact, as often events/characters from them are referenced in the main narrative and having more perspective on the events adds more oomph. This is an extremely detail-oriented series and barely anything goes in without some thought put into it. For the sake of not overwhelming my audience, I'm only listing the side stories I think are actually important to the overall narrative, but please do read the others if you have the time.
there's something divine in the way screams can sound. The events of OUADYA as seen through the eyes of someone trapped in the Astral Sea- or Lucien's utter breakdown, now with context. Introduces several backstory elements that become super relevant in YCDHN.
as in the painted parlor, ophelia dreams. The story of how Ophelia came to the Run, became a Mardoon, and gave up her son.
all of the dreamers defying convention. A fic that takes place in the two month gap between the two duology stories and bridges the two narratives.

dancing in the moonlight (beauyasha week day 1)
Prompt: Dance + Moon @beauyasha-week This week will be a continuation of my series from last year which you can find here! Read on ao3!
Crickets chirp softly from the garden and owls hoot from the tree line, providing a comforting noise to background the laughter of Imdrin and Cricket.
It’s a warm summer night, humid enough to make Yasha’s hair frizzy, but not enough to be uncomfortable. She and Beau sit on the back steps of their house, watching Imdrin and Cricket where they kneel in the grass and play. Their laughter rings out loudly, despite neither of their parents knowing what the hell they're on about.
Though Imdrin is a fair bit older than Cricket, it doesn’t stop him from adoring her and vice versa. The first few days after her arrived, Cricket followed Imdrin around with wide eyes, asking him nearly ceaseless questions. Apparently her utter adoration with him rubbed off as it took only a few weeks for him to get comfortable in the house.
He hasn’t quite been able to call her his little sister yet, but Beau and Yasha are sure it’s going to happen any day now. Cricket has been calling him her big brother since he came home.
Beau hums softly as she leans her head on Yasha’s shoulder, “Look at them, Yasha.” She nods with her glass of moderately spiked iced tea. Yasha looks up to see Cricket and Imdrin now running around the yard, massive smiles on both of their faces as they chase each other.
Imdrin has become a bright star in their lives. He is intelligent and shy and in many ways, far much more like Yasha than any of them were expecting. He's a very thoughtful boy, contrasting his incredibly energetic little sister.
Above them, Catha shines down brightly, giving everything a soft silver glow. Beau bumps her knee into Yasha’s before she takes her hand.
Beau’s had a hard week at the Soul, working overtime nearly every night as she and Caleb are working to investigate Ludinus Daleth and a few other members of the Assembly.
A quiet night at home with a home cooked meal and watching their kids play is exactly what she needed. Especially these kids, two children who came from awful places now laughing and smiling and happy.
Sometimes her research makes her think that there is nothing good in this world. These kids are proof there is.
“Mom!” Cricket chirps, getting both of their attention. She and Imdrin are kneeling in the grass side by side. “Drin is going to do magic! Come see!”
The two women chuckle, but get up off the stairs and walk over towards the kids. For the past few weeks, Imdrin’s innate magic has started to appear, though he hasn’t quite gotten control of it yet or managed to produce much of everything. Still, Cricket is full of excitement every time he attempts it.
Yasha kneels down beside Imdrin in the grass, putting a gentle hand on his shoulder, “You can do it.”
He takes a deep breath and nods, opening up his hands. In it, there’s a very small globule of white light. It seems to take all his concentration to maintain it as his hands start to shake. After only a few seconds, the light sputters out with a soft pop. Imdrin looks at Beau and Yasha for their reaction, clearly nervous.
Beau grins, “You’re doing so well, Drin." She traps his head with her hand and kisses his temple. "Even better than yesterday.”
“Really?” His eyes grow big with hope.
Yasha nods sagely, “Really. In fact, that much progress deserves a treat, what do you say?”
Imdrin’s face lights up. It wasn’t hard for Beau and Yasha to figure out Imdrin’s ticks. He grew up in an orphanage with nothing to his name, no family, and being told he was worthless. So they do the exact opposite, rewarding him when he does well, constantly reminding him of his worth. “Will you play the harp?”
Yasha smiles, “That’s what you want?”
Imdrin nods shyly. Yasha ruffles his hair, “I’ll be right back then.”
Yasha’s harp has found much use since the kids, they love to listen to it, to dance, or to let it lull them to sleep. So her harp is placed in the living room with pride, easy to grab when one of them asks her to play. The wood has started to become worn, the strings having been replaced twice now.
Yasha returns outside to find Beau sitting in the grass with the kids, talking softly but gesturing wildly as she tells them what is surely a highly exaggerated story of their adventuring days. Yasha smiles fondly as she sits down on the steps and starts playing a soft song.
Immediately Imdrin’s face lights up, Beau’s tale completely forgotten.
He absolutely adores hearing her play and hearing her sing lullabies to him and Cricket. Yasha assumes it’s because he wasn’t exposed to much music at the orphanage so she and Beau have tried to bring as much of it as they can into his life. Little does he know there’s a harp of his own hiding in Beau’s closet, waiting for his birthday.
“Mama, dance with me,” Cricket demands, jumping to her feet and standing in front of Beau.
Beau chuckles, “If the princess demands. Want to join, Imdrin?"
The boy shakes his head, just watching Yasha’s fingers move against the strings with wide eyes. Cricket pulls Beau up and stands on her feet as Beau begins to dance in slow circles with their daughter.
Yasha can’t help but lose focus on the music, letting herself rely on muscle memory. She watches Beau and Cricket, their smiles and dirty feet on the grass as they dance under the moon. Their daughter’s tusks just poke over her lip now, making her smile even sweeter.
And she watches Imdrin and his peaceful face, inching closer and closer to the source of the music. She shifts over so he can sit on the steps beside her and watch her fingers. She smiles a little and softly starts telling him what note she’s playing, voicing the rhythm.
As the melody repeats, Imdrin starts to repeat with her, slowly but surely memorizing the notes.
Cricket laughs loudly as Beau lifts her above her head in a spin before setting her right back onto her feet as they keep dancing.
It’s incredible, Yasha thinks. This little family they created of lost people, needing a home and somehow they all found each other. A miracle if you believe in them, happenstance if you don’t. Yasha isn’t sure where she falls yet, but everyday it feels closer and closer to a miracle.

Eve’s Big List of Fanfic
Hello all! I decided that even if Twitter doesn’t die, I want to keep this as a writing blog, of sorts. So here’s a list of my Critical Role/Shadowgast fics, for your reference and reading pleasure.
CURRENT FIC:
“How To Rest”
COMPLETE!
Shadowgast
Rated T
17.7k words (6/6 chapters)
Six snapshots across six months in the lives of two wizards falling in love. Each chapter can be read on its own, but all contribute to the broader narrative.
Last updated: March 3, 2024
Chapter 6 (3.3k words): Caleb gets some good news, then some great news.
COMPLETED FICS:
“On the Nature of Love” series, or Eve’s acespec shadowgast cinematic universe:
“Miss You Dearly”
Shadowgast
Rated G
4.6k words (3/3 chapters)
My rom-com era 💕
At the close of Trent Ikithon’s trial, Essek is invited to a Mighty Nein reunion party on the Nein Heroez, and the wizards spend a fair bit of that time pining.
“All Things End, All Things Change”
Shadowgast
Rated T
2.8k words (2/2 chapters)
The wizards make a decision at the T-Dock, and Caleb gets a moment to grieve.
“On the Nature of Attraction”
Shadowgast
Rated T
7.5k words
My magnum opus. My beloved.
The wizards are ace (both of them!!!) and very in love. Boundaries are set and respected.
Fics, not otherwise specified:
“admonition, admission”
Essek Thelyss & Leylas Kryn, background Shadowgast
Rated G
1.6k words
An examination of the Bright Queen’s feelings towards and relationship to Essek, before and after his betrayal.
“oh, by the way”
Beau & Caleb, background Shadowgast
Rated G
932 words
Caleb drops the “Essek-and-I-are-dating” bomb on Beauregard, and his timing is, as always, impeccable.
“The Shadowhand Becomes a Baker”
Shadowgast
Rated G
2.1k words
Essek bakes pastries and Caleb is soft about it.
First critrole fic. Inspired by the theory that the Shadow Baker from Campaign 3 is Essek in disguise.
WORK IN PROGRESS FICS:
—A fic that is currently in the outlining phase, affectionately titled “kissy kissy uwu”, or the Shadowgast get-together fic. Takes place shortly after the wizards’ solo Aeor trip, featuring a BeauYasha wedding and “the joyful yet agonizing state of being in the same vicinity as your crush and knowing that there’s something there but being too scared to make any moves.”
I was originally planning on this being a fairly chunky one shot, but it has gotten much bigger during the planning stages, so it may end up being multi-chapter. We’ll see.
I am very excited to work on this one!
—A silly AU/crack treated seriously fic focused on the Thelyss brothers and their relationship. Maybe a hint of background Shadowgast if there is a place for it. Outlined fairly well, but on the back-burner while I work on “On the Nature of Love”.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @crackinglamb, tysm 💜
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
Currently 33
2. what’s your total ao3 word count?
110,421
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Currently writing for Final Fantasy XIV, but I have also written for Borderlands 2, Fallout 4, and Critical Role
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
Only A Thought Away - Critical Role, Widomauk, Soulmates AU.
This Is Home - Critical Role, Widomauk/Fjorester/BeauYasha, Domestic slice of life.
I Will Endure - Critical Role, Widomauk, background Yashagard, Canon Divergence.
Forgiveness - Critical Role, Genfic, a bit of catharsis that still ended up happening in game just not the way i first envisioned it.
Boy, Oh Boy - Critical Role, Genfic, modern au.
All of these were done for a discord event several years ago.
5. do you respond to comments?
I do, I make an effort to respond to every one I get. Only exceptions being a couple "moar plz" "when's the next chapter?" type ones that I just deleted.
6. what’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Extinguishing the Last Light, my worst end Lightwarden AU where the Scions fail to defeat the final Lightwarden and the First continues to drown in Light.
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Walk to the Water, a 10k Borderlands Gaingel MerMay AU
8. do you get hate on fics?
Not yet, but if anyone tries it they've got another thing coming :)
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
I've written plenty, I've only posted the one E fic though. Mostly gay elf porn.
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
No.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope, though I'd be fine with it as long as I'm added as a co-author with a link to the original English.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have, I was doing a pretty large scale Critical Role rp fic with four other people. It disintegrated from some interpersonal tensions and one person leaving the fandom entirely but I still think very fondly on it. Before that, I was doing a Borderlands OC rp with a friend.
14. what’s your all-time favorite ship?
You ask me, a bisexual, to make a choice? Lol. Lmao, even. I do not have a One True Pairing, I have learned the mature art of multishipping like a goddamn adult.
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
OOF well this is a tie between Sometimes Goodbye and A Thistle's Thorns, both being all but abandoned due to fandom drift and loss of motivation. I found the original outline I had (thankfully) written out for Sometimes Goodbye, and I have started another BL2 playthrough, but FFXIV has eaten my life at this point so idk if I'll ever come back to it properly.
16. what are your writing strengths?
Show don't tell, detail descriptions, I have been told my characterisation through dialogue has been consistently on point (which is a relief), worldbuilding
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Finding a good place to end. if left to my own devices I will Just Keep Rambling. That was actually one of the reasons I kept my FFXIVWrite entries so short. I needed to get over the hump of just letting things end.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I haven't had this particular problem yet, but I will once I start writing stuff for Stormblood, because Kitali is multilingual.
When I'm reading it, though, I prefer to just have a dialogue tag indicating which language is being spoken and then either a bold, italics, or both to show what's being spoken in what language. It saves me the trouble of scrolling back and forth and back and forth from the notes at the end of the chapter or trying to remember what was said where exactly and in what context.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
Borderlands 2
20. favorite fic you’ve ever written?
That would be Dragoon Age: Origins, the telling of Kitali and Estinien's first clash which I definitely did not just spend the last hour or so rereading nope not me
Tagging: @captainsparklefingers @screamingvikings @ir0n-angel and anyone else who wants to take a shot, I have lost track of who writes and who doesn't lol

Yeah, I've definitely noticed that the guests (at least the ones that aren't Robbie/Dorian) have been the ones consistently pushing for Imodna. From Dusk needling Imogen about Laudna and intentionally manipulating our fun-scary witch, to what we've seen from FRIDA and Deanna as well. That, and the fans have been thanking the guests for pushing for it to happen, which... doesn't feel right to me.
I feel like the one exception was Bor'dor as he was asking Laudna questions specifically about Imogen. At first it felt like every other instance... but after the reveal of his Ruby Vanguard affiliation, and that he was there when it all went down, I wonder if it was purely to gather intel, most likely to determine a weakness that he could have exploited had he lived.
A weakness that had been exploited once before by Otohan and could be again.
After all, he most likely realized who Imogen was because of her resemblance to Liliana.
Robbie was definitely fine, and I think that's largely due to the fact that while he is technically a guest, he started the campaign with the group and therefore, was there and gone before the true Imodna shipping began, at least to the degree that it is today.
Utkarsh, while he did definitely bring up Laudna/Imogen, I think his background made it more of a "I don't care what you two define yourselves as, I just know you're important to each other, how can I exploit this" and so it doesn't come across as him trying to push Laudna and Imogen together.
But the rest, definitely pushing an agenda, and it does very much come across as inorganic because like I said, in my opinion, outside of the guests, Imogen and Laudna as anything more than what they currently are isn't something that has been talked about at all among the main players at the table. This, and the fact that, as I've also mentioned, I also noticed some... looks during this last stream that were more "here we go" or "please no" from the actual players that make me think that Laura and Marisha don't want Imodna to happen, or don't want it to happen right now.
Personally, I think my perspective is driven home by the stark contrast of how Beauyasha was treated by the main cast versus how Imogen and Laudna are being treated.
Even in the VERY early days of Beauyasha, the main cast was jumping in and joking around and very much pushing that ship, most likely because they knew on some level, that if things went there with Beau and Yasha, Marisha and Ashley were more than okay with that. We don't see that at all with Imogen and Laudna, in my opinion. Yes, people will post clips of looks that others give when Imogen and Laudna are interacting, but looks are so ambiguous and can mean literally anything. Like from this last episode, when Laudna and Prism are saying goodbye, I saw people posting a brief moment of expression on Laura's face that they took to mean Imogen was jealous, but if you watch the rest of the scene, for the very large majority of that entire interaction, Imogen is laughing and finding their interaction amusing.
Long story short, I put more stock into the actual in-game conversations/actions of the characters rather than the microexpressions of the players because they can mean anything, and so far, in my opinion, there really hasn't been anything regarding anything more between these two from anyone besides guests.

Beau for the ask meme?
First impression: I don't think I had any strong feelings about Beau when I started c2? Although this animatic of Beau and Nott's tree race was a big reason I got into c2 lol so I guess we can thank Beau for my c2 obsession. :)
Impression now: God I love Beau. She's absolutely my favourite of Marisha's pcs. Not only is she a badass with an amazing character arc and some fantastic relationships (Brjeaus? Empire siblings? Beauyasha? All fantastic) but I'm also so in love with how Marisha plays Beau.
Like Beau's whole gender presentation and relationship with femininity is deeply deeply relatable. I love that Beau is kind of masc, I love the slightly deeper voice Marisha puts on for her, I love that she's unapologetically a horny lesbian and kind of a fuck boy, I love that she wears makeup but it's always described as messy day-old makeup, I love that she didn't want to wear that tiara of intellect or wear a dress to a ball because it's not her, but she made the circlet into something that fit her, she was so happy when the clerics bought her a nice suit, she cares about how she looks, she is very much a woman and connected to her womanhood but not in a feminine way. It's just... it's so much and it's so good and Marisha plays it soooo well.
(That got long but wow I have feelings about Beauregard Lionett.)
Favorite moment: The tree race with Nott lmao. Absolutely iconic moment. (Also any bit where she turns to Fjord for how-to-people advice is my favourite, too.)
Idea for a story: Something exploring Beau and Veth's relationship, maybe? Ooh, maybe something about Luc and TJ growing up and becoming friends, with Beau and Veth as kind of a background friendship.
Or an AU where Beau becomes Fjord's second mate and continues to have pirate adventures with Fjord and Jester? Tbh I just want all of the Nein to continue to be pirates together post-canon lol. That was my favourite era of theirs.
Unpopular opinion: I don't know if I have any unpopular Beau opinions?? Idk man I just think she's cool.
Favorite relationship: The Brjeaussssss!! I love Fjord and Beau's relationship. They play off of each other so well, they're best friends, they're funny together but there's also so much genuine emotion between them... They're both kind of stoic but they love each other so much. I love them.
Favorite headcanon: Kind of said this above but I looove the idea of Luc and TJ growing up and being besties. Beau even mentions it several times, that she thinks they should be friends. I think she continually sets up playdates for them as they grow up. :)
(Feel free to send me more characters for this ask meme!)
