Oh Krystal @kmomof4, there are a LOT of questions here (and I am so late trying to answer them!) But I'll do my best, and I'm sorry for the delay. Thank you so much for asking though; I'm flattered you want to hear more about my writing. :)

4 - Total number of words you wrote this year?

I know that this is probably not a satisfactory answer to your question, but I genuinely have no clue. Because I so often write by hand on paper, I don’t have a quick word count. Then, by the time I get it typed up, I’m usually in such a pinch and time crunch to edit and post it, that I don’t usually make note of the word count. Sorry that I don’t have a better guess, but I just don’t know.

7- Longest completed fic you wrote this year?

My longest completed fic is almost certainly “The Belle Dame Emma”, written for the @cssns . I enjoyed writing a take on a dark fae Emma and knight Killian, and weaving in some of the Keats I studied in college as well. It had been in my head a long time and I was really happy with how it turned out. :)

14 - A fic you didn't expect to write?

I honestly never expect to write another chapter to my French Revolution CS AU, “A Private Revolution”, and then somehow I get excited thinking about you enjoying one more installment... Then there I was in October writing one more part for your birthday! ;p

15 - Something you learned this year?

Honestly, I’m not completely sure this is a positive, but I’ve learned that I can get as many fics going as I’m inspired to, and the world won’t cave in. I used to not want to have more than one (or maybe two stories) in progress at a time. I was afraid people would get frustrated with me, or tired of waiting and stop reading, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised to see that most fandom friends seem to be of a “the more the merrier” mindset and to be incredibly kind, encouraging and patient. I’m still trying to get quicker with the updates though!

18 - Current number of WIPs?

Oh sheesh, are you trying to overwhelm me here?!? Let’s just say that I have nearly ten fics that are actually started and have some amount of words written down for them. Yet, I also have nearly an entire subject section of a notebook full of possible ideas yet to tackle!

19 - Any new fics to start next year?

Yes, definitely. I’ve wanted to write a police/bailbondswoman modern AU, or some sort of mash-up policeman/writer Castle-inspired AU for quite some time. Maybe I’ll finally get one going this year.

Not only that, but I’d also love to do one where Killian is trying to raise either a young Liam 2.0 or young Alice alone, and someone makes trouble for him. Emma is a social worker who gets involved and helps him so he doesn’t lose Liam/Alice. (I’ve always thought a good social worker - like she deserved as a kid - would be a wonderful modern AU job for Emma.)

Plus, I have to decide on a new @cssns 22 idea. So you get the drift - the well of ideas never seems to dry up...

Sassy Recap--OUAT--1x04 "The Price of Gold"

It's the Cinderella episode!

In this version, though, Cinderella's fairy godmother gets poofed off the face of the earth bc Rumplestiltskin loves attention. He also wants her nifty wand, you see, and IF I WERE CINDERELLA I WOULD PROBABLY JUST LET HIM GO ON HIS MERRY WAY, but no. She's all "Hey, I still want to go to the ball!" and so of course she makes a DEAL WITH THE LITERAL DEVIL and promises him something "precious" in her vague future.

Girl. Just because you don't have anything NOW...

Also, since I'm now a lawyer let me just say: always read your g*ddamn contracts.

The glass slippers are more plexiglass than anything else but I like Rumple's line that "every story needs a memorable detail." Very meta.

Emma is walking Henry to the schoolbus and their tentative Mother-Son relationship is very cute and I cherish them.

As Emma muses, Sheriff Graham peels around the corner, sirens blaring, all ust to get her to notice him. HE LIKES HER. He offers her a job! As a deputy! The feels! And she's like, "Well I don't see a lot sheriffing going on around here," and doesn’t turn him down!!

Regina has COME TO GLOAT, though, over...well, not over much. Just that she's got Emma's number, blah blah, Emma never stays anywhere except once for two years in Tallahassee (THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT LIKE TWENTY EPISODES FROM NOW), and she's going to ditch Henry just like all the rest.

Which...again, that's a lot of bluff from someone trying to prove their own confidence.

Emma is more annoyed than anything else, and spills her delicious hot cocoa ALL OVER HER SHIRT. Did Regina cast some kind of spell? It's providential, though, because in visiting the laundry room Emma runs into a very pregnant Ashley, who happens to be...this world's Cinderella. She's not doing so hot.

Emma, as a single mom herself, has some badass sagacity to bestow. "Screw them," she says. "People are going to tell you who you are your whole life. You've just got to punch back and say no, this is who I am." And then she concludes by noting that there are no fairy godmothers in this world.

This advice, however, does nothing but convince Ashley to BREAK INTO MR. GOLD'S SHOP WITH A BRICK AND NO PLAN except to...SPRAY HIM IN THE FACE WITH MACE?? WTF.

Sidenote: the unicorn crib mobile from Fairytale Land is in his shop! As is just about every other curio you could imagine.

Meanwhile, Regina and a sharp LBD have a City Council meeting while Henry is stuck at home alone. Regina's home has fantastic decor, I have to say. Her taste has improved SO MUCH since Fairytale Land.

Mary Margaret is cooking Emma breakfast while Emma unpacks her boxes and it's charmingly domestic until Mr. Gold shows up to ask Emma to make use of her bailbondswoman skills. He plays cannily on Emma's sympathies for Ashley and tells her that she needs to find Ashley and recover a mysterious, precious thing she stole. Hmmm. Mr. Gold, evidently, Knows Too Much about practically everything, and I cherish him and his villainous ways*

(*would that that show had always treated his character as they did in Season 1)

Henry shows up and attempts to join Emma on her quest. Emma is wearing a GLORIOUS blue leather jacket and I want it SO MUCH though I could not pull it off.

Emma's all "You can't come" but Henry is a wheedling little boi and always gets what he wants, so off they go.

In Fairytale Land, Cinderella is marrying the prince, who looks like Ryan from High School Musical. Snow and Charming are at her wedding! Everyone looks like they're going to a 1991 prom, but what are you going to do.

The trouble with Snow White, I have decided--post-bandit days--is that she always has to be Inspirational with a capital I, and I, a very dour person, find that vaguely grating.

Also grating? Rumple, on Cinderella's conscience. He crashes the wedding and DEMANDS HER FIRST-BORN, JUST LIKE ANY RATIONAL PERSON WOULD EXPECT HIM TO

Omg she and her prince are so VACANT

Also her nightgown is cheesy af and I don't care about their problems.

Ruby has the tea on Ashley the maid, which is basically that her boyfriend left her when he found out she was pregnant and that she has two step-sisters and a step-mom she doesn't talk to. Henry is of course, DELIGHTED because of PARALLELS, and Emma is like, "Timing, son."

I honestly can't believe Granny allows Ruby to work in this uniform lol.

In this world, Cinderella's prince is a young dbag named Sean who lives with his even douchier Dad. His dad is wearing the Dad-est sweater I've ever seen. He tells Emma that he proudly broke them up, and also, that he helped her strike a deal THROUGH MR. GOLD to have the baby adopted out. THE BABY IS THE STOLEN THING OMG MR. GOLD IS SUCH A SNAKE

Henry, how do you know that people shouldn't break deals with Mr. Gold if you don't know that he's Rumplestiltskin?

Back at Granny's diner, Ruby admits that she helped Ashley escape out of town. She only admits this after Henry agrees to leave, because he's the mayor's son and snitches get stitches. BUT OF COURSE THAT LIL WEASEL IS IN THE BACK SEAT OF EMMA'S CAR WHEN SHE HIGHTAILS AFTER ASHLEY! It's a good thing he's cute.

Back in Fairytale Land, Charming is helping Cinderella and her prince get around their Rumple problem by proposing Trickery. If said Trickery (a new deal #FDR) succeeds, Rumple will be imprisoned in a cell in the old mines. How did they communicate that they wanted to meet? "We sent one of Snow's bluebirds," Charming explains, somehow managing to keep a straight face.

The way to trap Rumple is to make him sign the contract with a special pen. Cinderella is worried about what THIS magic will cost, but Prince Sean assures her that he'll pay it.

Sure enough, Henry's predictions that nobody can ever leave Storybrooke are true. At the town line, Ashley went off the road--because SHE IS HAVING HER BABY

Emma SPEEDS back to town with her and gives her a good pep talk about parental responsibility while Henry listens solemnly. SHE LOVES YOU HENRY, I HOPE YOU KNOW.

As I'm sure you've guessed, dear reader, Cinderella convinces Rumple to sign the contract but, as usual, he's wise to her tricks. ALl magic comes with a price, and Rumple in prison doesn't mean she gets off scott-free. Actually, she gets off SEAN-free, since Prince Sean basically...disappears? Evaporates into a well? It's all very vague and tragic.

And that leaves us with the current day and world: but this time, Ashley has Emma Swan as her champion, who isn't taking no for answer. (Who would, if you had a leather jacket like that?)

It goes down like this: Mr. Gold thanks Emma for bringing him his "merchandise," which is f'ed up, and which Emma is in NO MOOD FOR. "You're not getting that baby," she says, and Gold threatens that he'll call the police and press charges. Emma calls his BS and tells him that she'll take his ass to court. Gold is...suitably impressed and offers to make a deal with her instead. AND EMMA MAKES IT, AND NOW SHE OWES HIM A FAVOR, OH NO.

The good news is that Ashley gets to keep her baby. Emma really IS the Savior, even though Henry tells her she doesn't have to stay.

And Emma's answer to that? "See you tomorrow."

Henry manages to get home IN THE NICK OF TIME BEFORE FIVE, though one of his shoes falls on the stairs in a real Cinderella-y touch. Ashley reunites with her boyfriend, who brought her baby-shoes and his...undying loyalty, this time?

And Emma is for real ready for the deputy job. There's just one little problem...

Y'ALL THOUGHT REGINA HAD A CITY COUNCIL MEETING DIDN'T YOU? Nope. She's BANGING SHERIFF GRAHAM, BECAUSE OF COURSE SHE IS.

The tech behind: ‘Once Upon A Time’

Once Upon A Time

The ABC hitshow, first airing in 2011, is about fairytale characters that get cursed from their home, The Enchanted Forest, to a small town in Maine. Storybrooke. It all starts with Prince Charming, played by Josh Dallas, on his white horse, riding through the Forest in search for his true love Snow White, who’s played by Ginnifer Goodwin. He wakes her up with the famous True Loves’ Kiss. This is known as the end of the Disney movie. But for these characters it’s just the beginning. Because the moment they get married, and are about to share a kiss, the ceremony gets interrupted by none other than Snow White’s worst enemy. The Evil Queen, who’s geniously played by Lana Parrilla. And she makes an awful threat, she vows to destroy their happiness, if it is the last thing she does. What she doesn’t yet know then, is that Snow White will give birth to a baby on the night that she casts the curse. Or actually, she does, to make sure that Snow White will really lose everything once the Dark Curse washes over. However, she didn’t expect that the, then, baby, would escape through an enchanted wardrobe. The baby, named Emma, shall be known as the Savior. The one destined to break the curse when she’s twenty-eight. In Storybrooke, the infamous Queen is known as Regina Mills. The town mayor, with a ten-year-old son named Henry, after her father, whom she killed to cast the curse. However, Henry owns a storybook, and knows exactly what’s wrong with the town. And so he sets up a mission in search of his birthmother. Bailbondswoman Emma Swan, played by Jennifer Morrison. On the night of her twenty-eighth birthday he sets out to Boston to find her, sure of it, that she’s the Savior destined to save everyone that’s under the curse. During Emma’s time in Storybrooke, we also see flashes of the backstories of the Storybrooke characters. The Enchanted Forest is a medieval place with castles, knights, princes, princesses, kings and queens. And monsters, like werewolves and ogres. Now there’s one question: how do they do it? making all those castles and ogres? The answer: Green (and blue) Screen. Is it really that easy? Yes it is, because the show owns a huge 360 degree green stage. And not just that, they have 3D sets. Let’s dive into the history and innovations of green screen, green stages and the 3D sets that the show owns.

What is Green Screen?

Another word for ‘Green Screen’ is Chromakey. If you use green screen for your visual effects, it’s called chroma key compositing, or chroma keying. Chroma keying is a visual effects / post-production technique for compositing (layering) two images or video streams together based on color hues (chroma range). The technique has been used heavily in many fields to remove a background from the subject of a photo or video – particularly the newscasting, motion picture and videogame industries. A color range in the foreground footage is made transparent, allowing separately filmed background footage or a static image to be inserted into the scene. The chroma keying technique is commonly used in video production and post-production.

The History of Green and Blue Screen

Before green or blue screen existed producers used double exposure to introduce elements that didn’t exist into a scene which weren’t present in the initial exposure. This was done using black draping where a green screen would be used today. In the 1930s the blue screen method was developed at RKO Radio Pictures. At RKO, Linwood Dunn used an early version of the travelling matte to create "wipes" – where there were transitions like a windshield wiper in films such as Flying Down to Rio (1933). For decades, travelling matte shots had to be done "locked-down", so that neither the matted subject nor the background could shift their camera perspective at all. Later, computer-timed, motion-control cameras alleviated this problem, as both the foreground and background could be filmed with the same camera moves.Meteorologists on television often use a field monitor, to the side of the screen, to see where they are putting their hands against the background images. A newer technique is to project a faint image onto the screen.Some films make heavy use of chroma key to add backgrounds that are constructed entirely using computer-generated imagery (CGI). Performances from different takes can be composited together, which allows actors to be filmed separately and then placed together in the same scene. Chroma key allows performers to appear to be in any location without leaving the studio.

Green and Blue Screen in ‘Once Upon A Time’

Earlier I mentioned that the show uses a 360-degree Green Stage, and owns 3D sets. Crafting up to 400 VFX shots for each episode of Once Upon a Time is no easy feat, especially when there are 22 episodes each season. But the effects company behind the work, Zoic Studios, has mastered the art of virtual sets and integrated pipeline tools to make those deliveries possible. Having realized the effects for several episodic television series filmed largely on greenscreen sets, Zoic is well-versed in the area of virtual sets. That culminated in the development of iPad app called ZEUS:Scout to aid in the planning of shots and shooting on virtual set stages.

“How it works,” explains Zoic visual effects supervisor Andrew Orloff, “is that in the pre-production process the art department put together a SketchUp file and a piece of concept art for each of the virtual sets that we’re going to use, and we build those for real-time 3D playback. We convert them through Unity to our ZEUS:Scout app.” “We upload all of those into a protected FTP site for Once Upon a Time and they have their whole library in the Scout app,” adds Orloff. “So when we’re in pre-production we’ve got the ability now for the director to pull up any of the sets, move around the sets with the controllers that we have in the app, and also use the gyroscope in the iPad to do real-time tracking. If they’re sitting on a chair and they start moving around, they can look around the set as though they were standing in one spot on it and moving a magical window around it. If you’re on a greenscreen we can do a realtime composite as well.”

As Orloff notes, the Scout app is most helpful in pre-production, helping Zoic and crew members decide on orientation of the actors to camera and the location of objects in the scene. Then when the cameras start rolling, that’s when Zoic’s implementation of a complete virtual set system ZEUS comes into play.

The virtual world

ZEUS, short for Zoic Environmental Unification System, is a combination previsualization and on-set realtime compositing that relies on Lightcraft’s Previzion tech for realtime camera tracking and keying. It allows for 3D sets to be ‘piped in’ to the Once Upon a Time greenscreen stage, helping the actors and crew to get an idea of what the final shots will look like.

The Future of Green Screen

Looking further into the future, we see a new camera coming up, introduced at NAB by Lytro. The Lytro Cinema, and this camera can, in fact fix the problem, which green screen was created for. The problem of separating foreground and background. How? The answer is simple: Lytro’s primary power is its ability to capture accurate per-pixel depth information. With depth-based separation, you can easily keep or discard areas in the frame according to their distance from the camera. This could mean, that green screen won’t be necessary anymore in the near future.

The Future of Once Upon A Time’s Green Screen Stage

The 360-degree, 3D stage they use in Once Upon A Time won’t be gone anytime soon, I suspect, as the show is going into it’s 7th season and possibly it’s last. And the shots look fairly realistic, for as far the representation of Medieval times go. But who knows, maybe we’ll see the change to something similar to Lytro if the show gets renewed for an 8th season by ABC next year. Besides, when the show started in October 2011, we weren’t even close to something as Lytro, and so the Green Stage was fairly innovative back in 2011, in a show with so many VFX effects and CGI. Also, the iPad app that’s used: ZEUS: Scout is fairly innovative, you can already see the stage and how it’s going to look while using your iPad. How innovative is that for 2011?

I always forget how the idea of finding love is so deeply spun into ouat. Like yes we have the ‘I will always find you’ snowing line, but we have Emma becoming a bailbondswoman to find her parents. Henry finding Emma. Hansel and Gretel’s episode. The whole Regina/Robin plot line with Tinkerbell. Ingrid trying to find people to connect with. Rumple searching realms to find Balefire. Even Emma finding a way to love herself-magic and all. And that’s not even the beginning of it. Graham searched for his literal heart. Princess Abigail tried to find a way to degoldify her knight. I could go on picking example from every episode.

Thank you for these, Krystal!! :) I was genuinely hoping someone would send a few of these my way!!

#14: A fic you didn’t expect to write: Well you (@kmomof4 , yes you! ;p) were the cause of one fic I didn’t intend to write: the second and third (and maybe more sometime) installments of the French Revolution AU you requested. I considered that finished when I wrote the first little drabble long ago, but you convinced me otherwise. ;) Also, the “A Litter More Than They Bargained For” one shot I wrote for @cspupstravaganza was not a fic I would have envisioned until I tried to come up with something for the event - but I loved writing it once I got started.

#15: Something you learned this year: I learned the benefits and joys of participating in and using the various Discord channels and group chats. That was not really something I had been part of (or even known how to use) until this past year, but it’s been invaluable and so much fun!! I love being able to talk with other writers about what we’re working on, about the show and CS, and motivating each other through sprints.

#18: Current number of WIPs: Oh man, I’m almost embarrassed to try to mentally count them up! Some are in the process of posting, and some haven’t been seen by anyone yet. But I think I have around 10? Yep, TEN! (At least...)

#19: Any new fics to start next year? Again, if you could see my pages and PAGES of fic ideas yet to be written you would either be super excited or completely appalled - there’s so much CS to write and so little time! And the ideas pop up much more quickly than I can write them, so it’s always expanding!! (I guess that’s a good problem to have though?) I really want to start the CASABLANCA AU I’ve had in mind for ages in the next year. And I would like to find the right way to go about a detectives modern AU, or detective and bailbondswoman AU - I have some vague ideas for various plot points, but need a main through line...
