Barbie Movies Tournament: Preliminaries
Hello! Just for fun I thought I'd see what tumblr's favorite Barbie movie is. However, there are not quite the right number of Barbie movies to neatly fit into a tournament, so I've arbitrarily decided that the most recent 16 movies will have to earn their place in the showdown.
Preliminaries will start on Monday at noon EST and polls will be open for one week. The lineup is as follows:
Barbie: Spy Squad VS Barbie: Starlight Adventure
Barbie: Mariposa and the Fairy Princess VS Barbie: Mermaid Power
Barbie in Princess Power VS Barbie Dolphin Magic
Barbie and the Secret Door VS Barbie Princess Adventure
Barbie and Her Sisters in The Great Puppy Adventure VS Barbie and Her Sisters in a Puppy Chase
Barbie and Her Sisters in a Pony Tale VS Barbie: Big City Big Dreams
Barbie in Rock 'N Royals VS Barbie Video Game Hero
Barbie: The Pearl Princess VS Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday
The 8 winners will enter into the official bracket. I might be persuaded to do a consolation bracket for the 8 movies that lose the preliminaries.
The official bracket will be released after these preliminaries are over. This is my first time doing a tournament so any and all feedback is appreciated. Hope you all enjoy and consider following if you want to participate in all of the polls. Thanks!

Barbie movie tier list: part 3!
We're in the home stretch now! Just 10 more movies until I'm caught up to the newest release. You can find part 1 of the tier list here and part 2 here.
Barbie & Her Sisters in a Puppy Chase (2016): F tier. Mattel really said "Barbie can be anything, including a negligent caretaker!" With 8 talking animals (why!!!) and a complete disregard for shot consistency, this movie is only rescued from a "literal dogshit" rating by the rather sweet climactic moment where Barbie admits that sometimes even she doesn't know what to do.
Barbie: Video Game Hero (2017): D tier. This whole movie felt like a fever dream, honestly. The blocky animation style was kinda cute, and the BGM was nice at times, and one of the characters did say "noob", so...... minimal points for that, I suppose?
Barbie: Dolphin Magic (2017): C tier. The thing that really sucks about Mattel phasing out the "Barbie as" movies in favor of casting her only as herself is that Barbie is no longer allowed to experience any change, lest her character development cause complications for future films in the BCU. This means Barbie is fundamentally unable to play a pivotal (or even active) role in her own movies, and is instead relegated to the sidelines of some other character's A plot -- and yet, to bill the movie as a Barbie movie, Barbie must be given some requisite amount of screentime, which comes at the expense of the A plot's development. As a result, these movies are left feeling stale and underdeveloped, with no stakes and no commitment to the story being told, and Barbie: Dolphin Magic is no exception. No doubt the mermaid crystal given to Barbie by Isla will vanish into the ether between this movie and the next, and Barbie will continue to fret over whether or not she has the right to agency over her own choices. The kleptomaniac crab D plot was pretty funny, though.
Barbie Princess Adventure (2020): A tier. See, Mattel, you can still make awesome Barbie movies if you just full send it! With fun songs, lovely friendships, a meaningful message, and a sweetly awkward Ken, this movie is a worthy homage to the original Princess and the Pauper that nevertheless possesses its own charming identity.
Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday (2021): D tier. Was this a good movie? No. Was this a fun movie? Also no. Were the songs at least passable? Well, actually.....absolutely not. But there were some highly amusing characters with unique designs, and the silly little gags throughout (like the weird vegan DJ and the beach vampire) did make me chuckle!
Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams (2021): D tier. I begrudgingly appreciate the lack of talking animals, but this was such an absolute nothing-burger contrivance of a movie that I find myself hard pressed to give it points for that. There was no reason this needed to be set in NYC given it did not portray any NYC culture; there was no reason Brooklyn Barbie needed to also be named Barbie; there was no reason for literally anything that happened at any point in the movie! The only redeeming quality of this movie is the pigeons, which were fucking adorable.

☼☾ ( elle fanning , 26 , she/her , cis woman , lorraine 3 ) - have you seen GIZELLA SCHELLENBERG (NEE LORRAINE)?  we’ve heard through the grapevine that they’re FORGIVING but also MOODY. when you think of them , you think of A PILE OF PINK PEARLS, A ROSE ON FIRE, AND RUFFLED SATIN SHEETS.
Basics:
NAME: Gizella Schellenberg TITLE: Queen of Liechtenstein AGE: 26 BIRTHDAY: June 23rd (Cancer) SEXUALITY: Heterosexual MARITAL STATUS: Married POSITIVE TRAITS: Forgiving, excitable, bubbly, fair. NEGATIVE TRAITS: Explosive, moody, tumultuous, provocative. HOBBIES: Playing violin, drawing, shopping, dancing FAMILY: Elias Schellenberg (husband), Ilyana Lorraine (sister), Barbra Lorraine (sister), Dorit Schellenberg (sister-in-law), Stefan Schellenberg (brother-in-law), Reuben Schellenberg (brother-in-law).
The Story:
As a child, Gizella was a beautiful baby, but oddly small and dainty looking. She hardly spoke a word, leaving her parents to fear she was to grow up mute or uncommunicative. It was easy to forget she was there as she played amongst her feather pillows and dolls in the shape of friendly animals. One day she'd learned to scribble on paper, drawing a beautiful pink flower that made her so happy she could scream. And so she did, she screamed at the top of her lungs and her family came rushing to her as though viewing her flower drawing was a matter of life or death. It was then she learned the power of her own cries. She cried for everything, but most of all, for attention. Once she'd grown, she'd finessed this habit to hers and used it as her key to happiness, to the point where she was entirely unconscious to it. Whenever she was unhappy, she would be the most unhappy person alive until she got what she wanted. A simple conversation with the princess would consist of an aggressively cheerful tone, followed by mentioning the person's name multiple times (as to help her remember it), immediately bursting into screams or tears when upset, only to lighten up again with the snap of her fingers. It was like being carried by the wind in a hurricane, talking to her. Often, she'd leave them speechless from not being entirely sure how to respond. Gizella arrived to French Court in the winter, covered in pink, her favorite color, wearing an engagement ring given to her by Elias (which she does not know is fake), her dreams all beginning to come true. It was only a short while before they were married at the French palace; a romantic setting. Before the late winter months, she was a mere duchess, but recently she has suddenly become a queen. It is a new power dynamic for her, but she is far too excited to discover what being a queen of an independent nation can do for her, especially the queen of a nation that is desperate need of money.
SIMILAR CHARACTERS: Barbie (Barbie), Catherine The Great (The Great), Eliza (Hamilton), London Tipton (Suite Life of Zack and Cody), Anna (Frozen), Anastasia (Cinderella).
ESTABLISHED PLOTS:
Elias Schellenberg. Husband. The Lorraine children were quite close to Schellenbergs of Liechtenstein, which is how Gizella met Elias. She was like a lost puppy chasing after a man who paid her little to no regard, one could even see the hearts pounding her eyes each time she came across him. As well known as she was for making a fuss when things didn't go her way, she refrained from making a fuss in front of him for fear of looking unattractive to him. It was torture, swallowing her cries down her throat, all the while growing more in love, for the man who made her laugh and enthralled her, and in hatred, for the man who refused to notice her. To impress him, she learned all that she could about royals so that she could look smart around him. Eventually, when the Schellenbergs needed a betrothal, Elias finally conceded and chose to marry Gizella.
Illyana Lorraine. Sister. A most beloved member of her family, one she gets into fights the least amount of times, though their contentious relationship does result in bouts of silence between them, there remains a forgiveness between them that can never be broken. Their relationship took quite a rocky turn when Elias's feelings for her became quite clear, and Gizella's heart broken into a thousand pieces. But now she is his wife, and the awkwardness remains between the sisters, scrambling to figure out how they can live with one another amidst all of these emotions.
Barbara Lorraine. Sister. Gizella has an interesting relationship with her sister. One minute they are happy as can be, shopping together and attending all the best soirées. The next, they are screaming at one another over something so silly. Though Barbara has a particular disdain for Gizella’s husband, she has held her tongue on how much it hurts to see them not get along. But it’s only a matter of time before the lid pops off from boiling too hot.
Reuben Schellenberg. Brother (in law). He affectionately calls himself her very own brother, which is exactly what she’s always wanted. Though he is possibly mocking her when he does so, he enjoys teasing her and mocking her, which she must take in stride. Now that she has won Elias’s heart, she can’t help but feel like an outsider in her own new family, and so she works tirelessly to make them happy, though they will never be happy with her. To Reuben, she is the very thing that stands in the way of freeing him the guilt of betraying his eldest sister, and the only person alive who can actually control him with money and politics. They have a contentious relationship, and Gizella thrives in getting him to do as she says.
Stefan Schellenberg. Brother (in law). Despite her other in-laws loathing her, Gizella has a sweet relationship with the middle child. They were dear friends as children, despite that he tried to flirt with her on different occasions until she'd confessed her love for his brother. She admires the way he works quietly, patiently lies in wait for his opportunities. It makes it easy for her to co. exist with him, therefore, she awards him with her favor.
Dorit Schellenberg. Adversary. She views Gizella as the only thing standing her way between her and her rightful crown, but she feels just as betrayed as Elias for her recklessness with her money. The last thing that can happen is the crown of Liechtenstein to fall upon her head, because then that would mean the end of her husband. Dorit must be stopped by any means necessary.
WC’S
LADIES. Friends!!! It doesn't have to be ladies in waiting, but it can also be other queens, princesses, etc. If anyone is brave enough to have fun with her and her insane personality, or at least brave enough to tolerate her, please let her be friends with them. It'll be easier if they don't upset her, that's for sure.
TO BE A QUEEN. She's overexcited about becoming a queen, but also has no idea where to start, so she needs HELP and is eager to learn and listen.
A FRIEND IN NEED. (see main) Gizella has been friends with these two people since she came of age. They are nobles from Hungary who absolutely adore her (because they’ve put up with her long enough that there’s no turning back now). They tried their hardest to prevent the marriage between Gizella and Elias, but once the contract was set, they gave up their efforts. Now they are friends with a queen, they may be excited by that, they may despair that this is too much power for her. Nevertheless, they want what’s best for her.

Episode 34 - Barbie and Her Sisters in a Puppy Chase

Pack your bags and join us as we chase down this latest Barbie movie. Her sisters and the puppies are back for another adventure!

Hi there! First off I love your barbie posts so much - especially the "analysis" ones
Second, I was wondering if you could voice your thoughts on a "timeline" issue:
So... by all accounts, Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures kicked off w/ the movie Dolphin Magic. (Even though the vlogs themselves are some sort of pre-canon, but Harper's (am I rememberung that name correctly?) absence in the mainline DA series) kinda makes me question the canonicity of those earliest vlogs (I'd like them to be canon!)
But also like-
Dreamhouse Adventures features the Roberts sisters' puppies (Honey, Taffy, DJ, Rookie) -
And it's Great Puppy Adventure- the last Barbie movie featuring Kelly Sheridan - that details *how* the sisters got the puppies. Plus, the GPA movie is in the same style as Dreamhouse Adventures.
Only contradiction with DA I could find was Barbie in GPA saying "Chelsea was just a baby when we moved to Malibu".But in Dreamhouse Adventures' episode 1 (Welcome To The Dreamhouse!), Barbie said that she was eight years old when they moved to Malibu. As Barbie is shown to be seventeen and Chelsea is shown to be six, that means they have an eleven year age gap. So that means Chelsea wasn't even born when the rest of them moved to Malibu.
I'm not aware of any other contradictory info.... so if one disregards that as a "writers done booboo", could the GPA be considered the starting point of the Dreamhouse Adventures phase?
This wouldn't be the first time the writers goofed up. Even later Barbie vlogs which are supposedly canon to Dreamhouse Adventures sometimes have conflicting info. At least, I *think* the vlogs are canon to DA? Bc in the vlog where Barbie and Ken had a dance battle, Barbie told her viewers about Ken's breakdancing skills and a bit of story from Spirit Week, an episode from Dreamhouse Adventures.
Furthermore, IF - if and only if - Great Puppy Adventure *can possibly* be considered the starting point - would that make Great Puppy Chase, Spy Squad, Video Game Hero also part of Dreamhouse Adventures?
I never thought about this but after seeing a wiki post by someone (lemme copy-paste the contents here)
"While playing Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures (the game that is a available on Play Store), I opened Barbie's purple box and found stickers of characters from Video Game Hero. It could be a mistake, but if we look closely at Barbie's room in early Barbie Vlogs and Video Game Hero, the two are the same. So, Video Game Hero might be connected to Dreamhouse Adventures. And in Puppy Chase, we heard Chelsea say that cupcakes are her favorite. And in Video Game Hero (and Dreamtopia), it is obvious that Chelsea still has cupcakes as her favorite.
When I was looking at a picture of Barbie's room in Dreamhouse Adventures, I saw a picture of Renee and Teresa from Spy Squad. Might be an Easter egg, but hey, listen out. Barbie and Teresa performed gymnastics in Dreamhouse Adventures, while we saw some of Renee's gymnastic skills in Princess Adventure. And we already know the three were gymnasts in Spy Squad. Teresa mentioned both in Spy Squad and Dreamhouse Adventures that she is afraid of the dark. She still has her interests in technology. So, I think Spy Squad takes place after Dreamhouse Adventures, and the image might be an Easter egg.
We saw that the DreamCamper shown in A Puppy Chase is the same as the older one in Dreamhouse Adventures. Barbie says "Positive Attitude Changes Everything," the same saying she says in Barbie Vlogs and Dreamhouse Adventures. Skipper's personality remains pretty much the same in both, except she doesn't get airsick in Dreamhouse Adventures. Stacie and Chelsea's personalities too pretty much remain the same."
The author of that post then proposes their own take on the timeline (I have many thoughts on this, but mostly I don't know how to feel):
"If The Great Puppy Adventure is really related to Dreamhouse Adventures, and the mistakes I pointed out are just mistakes, then the timeline must go like this:
Barbie & Her Sisters In The Great Puppy Adventure
Barbie & Her Sisters In A Puppy Chase
Barbie: Video Game Hero
Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures
Barbie: Dolphin Magic
Barbie Princess Adventure
Barbie & Chelsea: The Lost Birthday
Barbie: Big City, Big Dreams
Barbie: Spy Squad"
My head is swirling w/ so much thoughts and confusion that -
Honestly, I'd LOVE to hear your opinions on this whole thing. You have such great insight, and all of your analysis posts (like I already said) are ABSOLUTELY MARVELLOUS bc you 1) make such valid and strong arguments and 2) always support your posts w irrefutable evidence!
Lastly, I'd like to sign off by saying that if any of my messages came off as pushy, arrogant, demanding, or conveyed any negative connotations, I apologize in advance because English is not my primary language. Often, I struggle to express myself clearly, and in the past, people have misinterpreted my messages negatively due to my wording and sentence structure. I assure you, my only intention is to be friendly and polite. Have a great day ahead!
Hi, thanks so much for the compliment! I'm happy you enjoy my ramblings LOL. And you definitely did not come off as pushy, don't worry about that! I'm sorry if I'm answering this really late I'm sorry I am REALLY bad about doing that unless directly asking for asks.
So, I personally have kind of given up on tying the Dreamhouse Adventures universe to anything outside of itself, even when there are little hints/Easter eggs/details that carry over from the original movie line. If it didn't happen in one of the Netflix properties, it's just not a possible canon to me. The timelines (yes I believe there are multiple) are too complicated enough as it is.
I think the DA universe has been continuously fractured and split, which is why every show and movie so far as somehow been in the same time of "Barbie is 17 right now". We are seeing different versions of it happening. For example, let's take the first installment, Dolphin Magic. Barbie helps Isla and the dolphins escape Marlo. They later reunite in Mermaid Magic, but this time Isla is completely different. Her design, voice, even personality. So, this Isla, and the Isla from DM could be different "Isla"s from different timelines.
Jumping around, I don't bother to include the earlier vlogs anymore. Barbie's personality is so much different in the initial vlogs and like you said they have conflicting information. They made a transition later to being directly tied to the DAverse so those can be counted but the first wave I just think are their own thing now.
Again thank you so much for your thoughts and you have more you want to share I'd love to read them!
