The Week In Corporate Coffeewashing

Nestlé, the Swiss multinational owner of Nespresso, Nescafé, Blue Bottle Coffee, and Dolce Gusto, among other coffee brands, is partnering with the aerospace company Airbus to use satellites to monitor reforestation rates in Thailand. The move is part of Nestlé's 2050 net zero emissions goal.

The company aims to plant and grow 200 million trees throughout its supply chain by 2030, which Airbus's new Pléiades Neo satellite will monitor to ensure that the trees continue to grow throughout the project's lifespan. "Our goal is to remove 2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent through these projects," according to Magdi Batato, Nestlé's Executive Vice-President and Head of Operations. "Growing trees close to our sourcing locations is an essential part of our climate roadmap alongside decarbonising our operations and supply chain."

Nestlé, the world's largest publicly held food company with over $99 billion in revenue in 2022, has a huge carbon footprint and has been at the center of a litany of environmental controversies, from water and plastic pollution to deforestation linked to palm oil and cocoa.

While planting more trees sounds like an undeniable good, corporate tree planting has been criticized as another form of greenwashing, throwing money at a problem without understanding local nuances of biodiversity or habitat suitability. They're often treated as another form of offsets, which, as we've discussed before, are often riddled with problems. Then there's the issue of space: as an article in the Guardian notes, "Planting trees to offset carbon emissions sounds great, but where are we going to put them all?"

Hopefully, Nestlé's afforestation program, with the help of satellites, is more than a simple box-ticking exercise.

Nestle uses satellite data to verify deforestation-free supplies

Nestle, a Swiss food and beverage company, has taken a significant step toward fulfilling its commitment to zero deforestation by announcing that 77% of its agricultural supplies are now verified to be deforestation-free.

Utilizing the Starling system in conjunction with Airbus and the Earthworm Foundation, the company launched the program in 2010 with the goal of ensuring that none of its global products would be associated with deforestation by the year 2020.

To produce deforestation-free goods, Nestle employs a certification, supply chain mapping, on-the-ground verification, and satellite imagery from the Starling system. With pilot plants for pulp and paper already in place, Nestle will expand its use of Starling to include soya later this year. The company uses Starling to monitor its palm oil supply chain.

Magdi Batato, executive vice president and head of operations for Nestle SA, stated: Our progress toward zero deforestation is being accelerated by innovation and technology like Starling. The way we manage deforestation risks in our palm oil supply chain is changing as a result. We are using this tool to hold ourselves and our suppliers accountable. Although there is still much work to be done, we are pleased with our progress. The final miles are always the most difficult.

Reaction from the business Grazia Vittadini, chief technology officer of Airbus, stated: Starling enables customers to comprehend where and why deforestation occurs and to make the best decisions by transforming terabytes of satellite images into actionable information.

Bastien Sachet, the CEO of the Earthworm Foundation, said: Nestle is the first company to use satellite monitoring throughout the entire palm oil supply chain, accelerating its commitment to no deforestation and offering this level of public transparency. The data gathered by these satellites shows that there are still obstacles, and no single company can overcome them all. Based on what these tools show us, all businesses with similar commitments must begin monitoring, verifying, and most importantly acting.

Craig Knowles, MarketDojo's marketing manager, stated: Nestle's commitment to preventing deforestation is admirable, especially in light of the fact that many businesses continue to regrettably take environmental shortcuts. All businesses can admire and aspire to the ability to declare that more than three quarters of their agricultural products are verified to be deforestation-free.

"Kami memberikan apresiasi atas dukungan dan kemitraan Nestle dengan koperasi di Indonesia, terutama perannya sebagai offtaker bagi produksi susu dari Koperasi Peternak Sapi Perah," kata Teten. Secara khusus, Teten juga menyampaikan ucapan terima kasih atas bantuan Nestle kepada koperasi peternak sapi perah saat menghadapi Penyakit Mulut dan Kaki (PMK) pada 2022 yang berdampak pada penurunan produktivitas susu koperasi peternak sapi perah di Indonesia mencapai 30-40 persen. Ia mengatakan, Kementerian Koperasi dan UKM mengharapkan peningkatan peran Nestle Indonesia agar dapat membantu produktivitas koperasi peternak sapi perah di Indonesia, mulai dari penyediaan bibit, pakan, sampai dengan produk sekunder dari susu. "Dengan cara ini diharapkan peternak sapi perah dapat memperoleh nilai tambah dan koperasi peternak sapi perah semakin berkembang dan masuk dalam rantai pasok," kata Teten. Do kornilio malplenigis lian sakon metante ĉion sur tablo en la kuirejo. Estis ajlo, cepo, karotoj, terpomoj, batatoj, salo, pipro, kapsiketo, kaj legomo nekutima. Kornilio komencis tranĉi la supaĵojn en la ordo de kiu li elprenis ilin el la sako kaj metis la tranĉaĵojn en poto da akvo. Kiam la supisto estis la lastan aferon stranĉanto silia pro enuo kaj kuriozeco kaŝe enrigardis la kuirejon. Kio estis okazanta ŝi ne certis. La supisto tranĉis kio aspektis kiel malbela pupo farita el maldikaj longaj terpomoj. Kornilio tranĉis unu "brakon" de la malbela terpomeca pupo. La vizaĝeto sur ĝi ŝajnis grimaci, silia preskaŭ atendis ke ĝi krius sed nur estis la sono de la tranĉilo same kiel kiam oni tranĉas karoton. Kornilio remetis la ceteron de la terpompupo en la sako kaj senŝeligis la fortranĉitan pecon kaj dispecigis same kiel li faris al la karoto kaj terpomo kaj batato. Tre laca silia rekuŝiĝis sursofe kaj atendis por la supo esti preta.

Kun ĉio kune en la poto kornilio boligis ĝin ĝis ĉio estis moligita per la varma akvo. Li verŝis la supon en bovlo la aldonis glacikubon por iomete malvarmigi la supon kaj portis ĝin al silia kiu duone dormis nun.

"Kara, la supo estas preta por vi. Ĝuu!" Silia dankis lin kaj manĝis ĝin tute kaj preskaŭ tuj post plenmanĝi la supon trinkinte ĉiun guton de la buljonon ŝi endormiĝis profunde. Kornilio purigis la kuirejon. antaŭ foriri li skribis lian telefonnumeron kaj nomon sur peceto de papero kaj ŝlosis la pordon elirinte.

"Mirinde! sed Kiom longe mi dormis kaj kie estas la supisto?" Silia trovis la paperon kiun lasis kornilio tie kaj ekvokis lin.

Kornilio:"Saluton?"

Silia: "Saluton, ĉu vi estas la supisto? Mi estas silia.

Kornilio:"jes, supisto kornilio. Vi certe fartas multe pli bone hodiaŭ, kara.

Silia: "Jes multege pli bone sed mi havas du demandojn, kara. Kio estis tiu malbela terpoma pupo kies brakon vi uzis en la supo kaj kiom longe mi dormis? Mi ĵus vekiĝis antaŭ malpli ol dek minutoj."

Kornilio: "Ho la terpompupo tio estas mandragoro, speciala planto uzata en kuraciloj dum jarcentoj kaj vi dormis la kutiman tempodaŭron tri tagoj"

Silia: "TRI TAGOJ!...... VI ŜERCAS!"

Kornilio:"Mi ne ŝercas, kara. Vi vidos mem. Ĉu vi bezonas ion alian, kara ? Vi tute sanas nun."

Silia: "Mmmmm Nu, ne dankon, kara. Mi devas eki al mia laboro"

Kornilio: "Bone, kara. Mi lasos vin labori. Vi havas multe por fari post tri tagoj da dormado. Adiaŭ kara."

Silia:"Adiaŭ"
