February 1: On this day in 1862, Julia Ward Howe published "Battle Hymn of the Republic," now a treasured song marking American patriotism. Julia Ward Howe first wrote the words while staying at the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C. (a historic hotel that is still open to guests today). She recounted how she “awoke in the gray of the morning twilight; and as I lay waiting for the dawn, the long lines of the desired poem began to twine themselves in my mind.”
Julia Ward Howe adapted her song from the soldiers' song "John Brown's Body." On February 1 of 1862, she published the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" in The Atlantic Monthly.

January 28, 1908: Author and activist Julia Ward Howe (May 27, 1819 - October 17, 1910) is the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
Howe was born in New York City to New York City Banker Samuel Anderson and poet Julia Rush Ward. Being from an affluent family, Julia traveled in social and literary circles that included writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. In 1862 her poem "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was published in the Atlantic Monthly. The poem is considered by many as being the anthem for the Union army.
After the war, Howe shifted her focus to Women's suffrage. She was part of the founding of several suffrage groups as the New England Suffrage Association (1868), the Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association and the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA). After leaving the NWSA, she and Lucy Stone found the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA). Julia also lectured throughout the country for the improvement of women's education and for increased opportunities for women in the workforce. She continued to write and publish books up to the time of her death in 1910.
The American Academy of Arts and Letters was established in 1898 as an honor society of leading architects, artists, composers and writers of the United States. The society's aim was for the "advancement of art and literature." The Academy is located on Audubon Terrace in Washington Heights.

Tumblr media
Julia Ward Howe was an influential seam upon the red thread of history. Born in New York on May 27th 1819 (1), Howe would go on to become a writer, poet, suffragist, abolitionist, and social activist. (2) Howe contributed to the international peace movement through her writing when, in 1870, she authored the book “Appeal to Womanhood throughout the world”. (3) This book was a call for women around the world to take up the call for peace and was an appeal for a women’s peace conference. Howe’s most famous work, “The Battle Hymn of the Republic”, written during the American Civil War (4), would be quoted and referenced in such great American works as John Steinbeck’s novel “The Grapes of Wrath”(5) and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech at the conclusion of his famous march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama.(6) Howe died on October 17th, 1910.
