18th June 1815, the Battle of Waterloo; the armies of the seventh coalition under the Duke of Wellington, and the Prussian army under Field Marshal von Blücher, totalling 118,000 troops face the French army of 73,000 under Napoleon Bonaparte in Belgium. The last battle of the Napoleonic Wars, which had ravaged Europe and had been fought across the world since 1803; ends with Napoleon’s defeat in a hardwon and carnage filled battle, with Wellington stating, ‘believe me, nothing except a battle lost can be half so melancholy as a battle won’. The battle stayed in the public imagination for a hundred years, ensuring relative peace in Europe until the first world war. The armies of Wellington and Blücher lost 22,000 dead or wounded, with Napoleon’s armies losing 24,000 to 26,000. Human remains were still visible upon the battlefield for at least a year after. The site also became a place of salvage for the teeth of the dead, with thousands being made into dentures, known as ‘Waterloo teeth’. Four days after the battle Napoleon abdicated, and was eventually exiled to the British island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean. 20th June 1743, birth of radical English poet, essayist teacher and writer Anna Laetitia Barbauld. Outspoken at a time when women were considered ignorant of politics, Barbauld not only expressed political opinions, but also vehemently published them, and also enlightenment poetry which contributed to the development of British Romanticism, alongside William Wordworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. A supporter of the abolition of slavery, she published works in support of William Wilberforce In 1791. In 1812 she published ‘Eighteen Hundred and Eleven’, (Continued in the comments) #battleofwaterloo #battleofwaterloo1815 #napoleonicwars #napoleónbonaparte #arthurwellesley #waterloo #19thcentury #19thcenturyhistory #18thcentury #18thcenturyhistory #samueltaylorcoleridge #williamwordsworth #frenchrevolution #historicaltarot #regencygothic #tarotillustration #tarotart #tarotartist #historicalillustration #deathcard #deathtarot #deathtarotcard #annalaetitiabarbauld #romanticism #romanticismart #tarotillustration #tarotcards #tarotcardsdeck https://www.instagram.com/p/CQRKNQlHkFm/?utm_medium=tumblr

Saw the film recently so today seemed a good day to post about it. The most impressive aspect is the battle scenes. The lack of cgi makes them very realistic, with the 17,000 soviet soldiers and 1500 horses used making for an extraordinary spectacle. Unfortunately the other narrative is a bit lumbering and whilst Christopher Plummer does OK as Wellington, Rod Steiger struggles with Naploeon's rather melodramatic scenes. Still worth seeing for the battle scenes I think, and I saw it on TV so it must look great on bluray - even if it does remind us 205 years later just how viscerally brutal 19th century battles were. .. . . . . . . . . #waterloomovie #waterloofilm #battleofwaterloo #battleofwaterloo1815 #rodsteiger #christopherplummer #napoleon #napoleonbonaparte #wellington #dukeofwellington #cgi https://www.instagram.com/p/CBlbx5QlhNx/?igshid=1kakzxj6jelm

Battle of Waterloo
The Battle of Waterloo (18 June 1815) was the last major engagement of the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), fought by a French army under Emperor Napoleon I (r. 1804-1814; 1815) against two armies of the Seventh Coalition. Waterloo resulted in the end of both Napoleon's career and the First French Empire and is often considered one of history's most important battles.

30th March 1746, birth of Spanish romantic painter and printmaker, Francisco Jose de Goya. The most important Spanish artist and artistic chronicler of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1793 Goya, after suffering from an undiagnosed illness, went deaf, which marked a darker and pessimistic transformation in his work. One theory is that this illness, and the subsequent mental and physical breakdown was caused by lead poisoning from the lead white paint he used extensively in his works; grinding the paint himself in his studio. Goya’s gothic and morbid outlook was also further intensified during the Napoleonic Wars after the French army invaded Spain in 1808, leading to the Peninsular War of 1808–1814. In 1888, Goya was exhumed for burial in France, and upon opening his tomb it was discovered that his skull was missing. 31st March 1837, death of English Romantic landscape painter John Constable, best known for his painting the ‘Hay wain’. Writing in 1821, the same year he completed his most famous painting, he stated "painting is but another word for feeling". In 1829, Constable started teaching landscape painting at the Royal Academy, and became a critique of emerging art movements, such as by the Gothic Revival movement. It is this movement that gave birth to the art of our next notable figure. 2nd April 1827, birth of Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt, who founded the movement with Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and John Everett Millais in 1848, having rejected the teachings of the Royal Academy, the movement sought a return to the ideals and symbolism of the medieval period, and observation of the natural world.
