Does anyone else have nicknames for the bears that don't have officially recognized names?
I would like to share with you the nicknames I have for some of the Katmai bears:
901 Charger
335 Barbie (because she's blonde)
164 Sandwich (got this one from his bio on the national park service website)
856 Prettyboy

Fat Bear Week Finale 2022
Today marks the last day of voting for Fat Bear Week 2022! All the bears did great this year, getting as fat as possible for their winter hibernation, but there can only be one who is crowned the winner. This year it’s between Bear 747, who won in 2020, and Bear 901, who has never won Fat Bear Week.
Bears abound in Twenty-Two Bears by Swiss children’s writer and librarian Claire Huchet Bishop (1898-1993) with illustrations by German illustrator Kurt Wiese (1887-1974). Published by Viking Press in 1964, the book tells a counting story about twenty-two bears that your very own bear meets for a birthday feast. Of course, your bear returns home in time for bedtime snuggles. This book is part of our Historical Curriculum Collection.

The second bear I voted for was Bear 901. She's the bear I'm hoping will end up on the other side of the bracket on Tuesday.
901 is a truly huge and pretty bear. Interested to see how Saturday goes, when she's placed opposite fan favorite Otis!

“Choose the fattest bear of the year! Some of the largest brown bears on Earth make their home at Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska. Brown bears get fat to survive and Fat Bear Week is an annual tournament celebrating their success in preparation for winter hibernation.
“Fat Bear Week 2023 is October 4 - October 10. Your vote decides who is the fattest of the fat. Matchups will be open for voting between 12 - 9 p.m. Eastern (9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Pacific)” (Fat Bear Week About Page).

it's the most wonderful time of the year
Fat Bear Week starts today!! Head on over to fatbearweek.org to vote on two weighty matchups! Make sure you scroll down to vote in both as they are entirely separate ballots.
The first of today's battles is between 806 'Donk the Chonk' Junior, and 428 'Studious Svetlana'!
Also known as 'Phelps' and 'Tank' 806 jr. is a first year cub who is such a butterball that at least 2 bears tried to eat him on camera. Despite being very delicious he has chonked and floofed up very nicely!!
His rival, 428, is from Brooks Falls Royalty. Daughter of 128 Grazer, granddaughter of 408 Crooked Claw, this savvy young sow paid close attention to her mom's fishing lessons and went from scrawny sub to fat and fab!
In the second match we see two moms, the old guard and the new: 402 'Mother of Bears' and 901.
402 is a massive matriarch who has raised 8 (EIGHT!) litters of cubs! Her genes are all over Brooks River, and who can blame the boars for courting her? She has one yearling cub this year, a feisty little nugget, who is keeping her on her toes, but she has still managed to get both herself and her cub nice and fat!
901 is a first time mom who has persevered admirably. Despite both nursing and sharing food with her cubs (not to mention fishing her heart our day after day), 901 is looking amazing this fall.
There are no wrong choices in today's matches! They are all fat! You can vote based on whatever criteria you want. Just do your civic duty, and may the most deserving Fat Bear win! The polls are open now, until 9pm eastern.
