The kind of ones which you have to experience yourself. Udaan is one such for me. By far one of the best films Indian Cinema has ever made. The movie gives a brilliant take on an adolescent who has stepped into his teens and how he faces a tyrannical father, a step brother he never knew existed and how he eventually breaks the shackles and frees himself from a world that's slowly suffocating him. Gem of a screenplay from Motwane and Kashyap, closer to life acting from Rajat Barmecha and Ronit Roy( who has portrayed one of the best negative characters we've ever had with such finesse), quite an exceptional soundtrack from Amit Trivedi (who was then trying to establish himself in the industry) and masterclass direction from Motwane in his directorial debut. Swades (2004) Director: Ashutosh Gowariker Cast : Shah Rukh Khan, Gayatri Joshi, Kishori Ballal Music: AR Rahman Cinematography: Mahesh Aney What makes Swades one of the most soulful films of the millennium are the several imageries used by Ashutosh Gowariker to communicate so much more than what was on the screen. A claypot of water, a gift box of Indian spices, a glowing light bulb, a movie projecting screen and a montage of journeys are few of those which are more than enough to define the idea of being an Indian. Swades is the kind of film that still instills patriotism in many without any adulteration or jingoism. The fact that the character of Mohan Bhargav is inspired and named after Mahatma Gandhiji and has parallels with him throughout its entire run time shows why Gowariker is a thinking filmmaker. Swades deals with many topics which include servant leadership, women empowerment, casteism, child labour, poverty and a transformative journey profound in humanity. Swades gave a reality check to a country that has always been delusional to its greatness. Terrific performances from the whole cast and a career best outing from Shah Rukh Khan makes it a million times rewatchable. AR Rahman's evergreen songs and score add to its greatness and the song 'Yeh Jo Des Hai Tera' is a patriotic anthem for the ages. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this cinematic marvel and this is an example of solid film making at its very best. Is it just a coincidence that both movies have its best scenes in front of the Sea? In other words the Sea acts as a metaphor to the tale of the humans in both the frames. One is in black and white while the other is in colour. One is heart-wrenching while the other is heart-warming. One won the Golden Lion while the other won the Palme d'Or. Without any doubt, RDB is one of the greatest Indian films to have come out and for me it is the best Indian film of the 21st century. Each and every factor associated with the film was close to perfection. An ensemble cast in #AamirKhan, #Sidharth, #Madhavan, #SohaAliKhan, #KunalKapoor, #SharmanJoshi, #AtulKulkarni, #AlicePatten, #AnupamKher, #Ompuri, #WaheedaRehman and #KironKher, giving their best to a great script and enacting some well written dialogues to perfection. Beautiful shooting locales and some great shots from #BinodPradhan. Soulful songs and score from #ArRahman and some great choices from him like the decision to rope in the great #LataMangeshkar to sing #LukaChuppi and to give the perfect platform to unleash #NareshIyer. More than anyone, it was the writing and vision of #RakeyshOmprakashMehra that made RDB the gem it is and the message he gave through the film will always be eternal. Inspired from the life of #MGR and #Karunanidhi, #ManiRatnam spoke a cinematic language that is still alien to major chunk of the mainstream audience. In what was one of the best ever casting decisions, #Mohanlal just lived out as #Anandan, from a man of nothing to the most powerful man in #TamilNadu. International critics have called him the #MarlonBrando of Indian Cinema, but only we know who he really is. #PrakashRaj, in a national award winning performance was equally brilliant and nuanced as Tamizhselvan. #AishwaryaRai in her debut outing, #Nassar, #Tabu, #Gautami, #Revathi and #DelhiGanesh were apt castings and delivered powerful performances. Santosh Sivan's composition and use of natural lighting in static interiors and extraordinary deep focus cinematography gave him a National award and his work in Iruvar is still a study material for students of Cinema. Ar Rahman used some retro tunes fitting to the 50s and 60s, evergreen tracks that still makes me high. The editing of Suresh Urs and the production design by the late #SamirChanda were also commendable. I was just one month old when #Iruvar released. I wish the movie released in times of now so that I would've been able to experience it fully from the theatres. Guru: Tha nahi, hai, aur rahega, GURUKANT DESAI….............. #12yearsofGURU ❤️ Normally I don't listen much to the Tamil versions of the Hindi songs composed by #ArRahman. Most times, the beauty lies in the original alone, though the resurfaced ones ain't that bad. But this one is a rare exception. #YeManpuruMangaye, one Tamil song I love more than its Hindi original #AyHairathe. Though #Hariharan and #AlkaYagnik were both their element in the Hindi original, the Tamil version sung by #Srinivas and #Sujatha is just pure gold. Having parts of #TeraBina going along with it and beautiful lyrics by Vairamuthu, this is one of my all time favourite compositions from AR Rahman. And there is no surprise why Sujatha is one of his favourite singers...what a magical voice❤️. #GURU is also one of Mani Ratnam's best. Inspired from the life of industrialist #DhirubhaiAmbani, Guru is one of the better made semi-autobiographical stuffs we've had. A career best performance from #AbhishekBachchan, who's often criticized for his acting capabilities. He imprinted Gurubhai in our minds with such aplomb that you'll wonder how under-utilised his histrionic skills are. He's always been a director's actor with #Manmarziyaan being the latest example. Powerful performances from #AishwaryaRai, #Madhavan, #MithunChakraborty and #VidyaBalan and some technical finesse of the highest order through #RajivMenon, #SreekarPrasad and #SamirChanda makes Guru stand out. AR Rahman as always gave his best effort in another remarkable outing with #ManiRatnam. #BarsoRe made #ShreyaGhoshal a household name in India. #TeraBina made me a #Chinmayi fan. #ShaukHai is one of the finest background pieces Indian cinema had ever seen.
