Congratulations Karunanidhi!
Dr. Sudath Gunasekara (SLAS) 28.9.2009. It was reported that Tamilnadu Chief Minister has very correctly decided to give Indian Citizenship to all Sri Lankan refugees who are living there. I am not sure whether he could do this under the Indian Constitution, since the decision has to be finally taken by the Central government. Any way I wish him good luck and congratulate him for this bold…

Kalaignar international convention centre to come up on 25-acre land in Chennai
Speaking on the occasion, Stalin said the world-class convention centre will be suitable for conducting global industrial exhibitions, trade conferences, technical meetings, international film festival
Tumblr media
CHENNAI: As part of the 100th birth anniversary of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday announced the state government would build a Kalaignar International Convention Centre on a 25-acre land in Chennai. The centre will have a seminar hall with a capacity to accommodate 5,000 people, exhibition halls, parks, star hotels, restaurants and multi-storey parking lot. On the occasion, Stalin also released the logo for the centenary celebrations of Karunanidhi.
Speaking on the occasion, Stalin said the world-class convention centre will be suitable for conducting global industrial exhibitions, trade conferences, technical meetings, international film festivals etc. Such utilities would take the glory of Kalaignar across the globe. “This idea struck my mind during my recent visit to Singapore and Japan,” he added.
Referring to the presence of the former Governor of West Bengal Gopalakrishna Gandhi at the event, the Chief Minister said, “The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi is here to pay encomiums to Karunanidhi who is the ‘ideological heir’ of Periyar EV Ramasamy.” Stalin said both Periyar and CN Annadurai had great respect for Mahatma Gandhi.
He said the state government has planned to celebrate the centenary of Karunanidhi for a year and recalled the contributions of the late leader for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu over several decades. Speaking on the occasion, Gopalakrishna Gandhi recalled when he joined the civil service, Karunanidhi was the chief minister and Stalin was just 15 years old.
“In public life, Kalaignar symbolised maturity. In administration and in governance, Karunanidhi symbolised balance. He knew what the word Alavu in Tamil means - Measure - When to do and what to do. Also, when not to and what should not be done. He was a skilful politician and a tremendous administrator. I would like to say this particularly to the young ministers present here and to his grandson on the stage today,” he said.
“In the politician Karunanidhi, there was a statesman par excellence. In that statesman, there was an artiste. Kalaiganar was supremely an artiste in the administration. When the late MGR, who was the heartthrob of millions was critically ill, Kalaiganar, the artiste expressed his wish that MGR should return to political life.
“The mandate to govern is the duty to discharge not a power to flaunt. Public properties should be protected as the assets of a trust. Every moment in the office is holy,” he added. On the occasion, the chief minister also released a short film on the contributions of Karunanidhi to the state, and inaugurated a photo exhibition covering the important events in the life of the late leader.
Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan recalled the contributions of Karunanidhi to the people of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil language and its literature. Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, ministers and senior officials were among those present on the occasion.

are you familiar with TN politics? (this might be a a dumb question if you’re tamil sorry) is Vijay entering politics a good or bad thing?
I'm not Tamil but I am familiar with TN politics. Vijay entering politics isn't necessarily good or bad it's just really funny. My guy really went from Arabic Kuthu to this
Also Tamil actors have a history of entering politics later in their life (Jayalalitha, Karunanidhi and MGR to name a few)

Random movie facts I just know for some reason??
I’m literally a living mani ratnam encyclopedia, so beware
The cast Bheem wears on his hand in RRR is not a deliberate choice. He wears it because Tarak irl broke his hand (or wrist).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eega is the only movie for which Rajamouli wrote the story.
Nearly all of Rajamouli’s movies are centered around revenge and have (atleast) one iconic silhouette shot and weapon.
Actress Sridevi was the first choice for the role of Sivagami.
Baahubali was just supposed to be one movie.
Kilikili (the language of the Kalakeyas from Baahubali) is a legit language with grammer rules and a website dedicated to it. According to Rajamouli it’s the “worlds youngest and easiest language”
Speaking of language, Mani Ratnam’s only Telugu movie, Geethanjali, was possible because Nagarjuna (yes, the actor Nagarjuna) followed (stalked?) Mani Ratnam every morning after watching Agni Natchathiram/Gharshana.
The arc of Surya from Thalapathi begins and ends with the shot of the sun. This is because he’s modeled after Karna and Karna is the son of the Sun God. Also many important moments of Surya in the movie has the sun in the background.
Arvind Swamy and Shobana (mild spoiler ahead?) who get married in the movie were classmates when they were kids.
Arvind Swamy was not the first choice for his now iconic roles in Thalapathi, Roja, Bombay, and Thani oruvan/Dhruva.
In Iruvar/Iddaru, Kalpana (played by Aishwarya Rai) looking like Pushpavalli has an important part. The movie is the metaphorical biography of the friendship between MGR and Karunanidhi and it was recently found that Jayalitha (on whom Kalpana is based on) did in fact look similar to MGR’s first wife.
In the same movie, the role of Tamizhselvan (the Karunanidhi equivalent) was offered to and was auditioned by many, including R. Madhavan (who was rejected because his “eyes looked too young”), Mammootty (who had a look test, but rejected the role), Kamal Haasan (who rejected the role), and Arvind Swamy (who was initially finalized, had a look test, and even recorded two poems that are used in the final cut, but was unable to act, as AVM productions refused to let him, as it would bring continuity issues to his other film Minsara Kanavu/Merupu Kalalu). The role finally went to Prakash Raj, who got a national award for this role.
The song Vennila Vennila from this movie is shot in all natural light as the technicians were on strike during the schedule.
Mammootty is 70. Not a fact. Just wanted to let y’all know that Mammukka is 70 years old.
There is an alternate ending to Minsara Kanavu/Merupu Kalalu, (spoiler ahead) where Thomas does not become a priest. Instead Priya and Deva simply get married after Deva jumps off the train.
Director Gautam Vasudev Menon has two cameos in this movie. He worked as an assistant director.
For a movie, Mani Ratnam and AR Rahman wanted to use a Backstreet Boys song. When asked for permission, the production company asked for 1.5 million (not sure if INR or USD) as royalties (they ended up just creating a song from scratch). But when the same production company asked permission to use Chaiyya Chaiyya, from Dil Se for Inside Man, though they were willing to give it for free, Mani Ratnam (the director of Dil Se) and AR Rahman (the composer) demanded the same amount of money which the production company paid.
AR Rahman wanted to record an album with SPB in which Rahman wanted SPB to sing ARR’s popular songs that were originally sung by other singers.
That’s all I can remember for now. Some of these are from deep Wikipedia rabbit holes. Most from a book called Conversations with Mani Ratnam. More soon?

HISTORY OF TAMIL NADU
Name :Sanjith Y
Dep:B A HISTORY(EM)
REG NO:2121E0246
The history of Tamil Nadu is rich and diverse, spanning thousands of years. While it's challenging to cover its entire history in just 1000 words, I can provide a concise overview of key periods and developments.
1. **Ancient History (300 BCE - 300 CE):**
Tamil Nadu's history can be traced back to the Sangam period, characterized by the flourishing of Tamil literature. The Sangam texts, composed between 300 BCE and 300 CE, provide insights into the early Tamil society, culture, and politics.
2. **Medieval Period (7th - 14th Century):**
The Chola dynasty, one of the most prominent in Tamil Nadu's history, ruled during this time. They expanded their empire across South India and Southeast Asia. The Cholas made significant contributions to art, literature, and temple architecture.
3. **Vijayanagara Empire (14th - 17th Century):**
The Vijayanagara Empire, although not Tamil, influenced the region. They promoted the growth of the Tamil language and culture. Temples and grand architectural projects were undertaken during this period.
4. **Nayak and Maratha Rule (17th - 18th Century):**
After the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, Tamil Nadu saw the rise of various Nayak dynasties and later, the Marathas. The Nayaks continued to promote Tamil culture and literature.
5. **British Colonial Rule (18th Century - 1947):**
The British East India Company established control over Tamil Nadu in the 18th century. The region played a crucial role in the Indian independence movement. Prominent leaders like C. Rajagopalachari and Periyar E.V. Ramasamy emerged during this period.
6. **Independence and Post-Independence Era (1947 - Present):**
India gained independence in 1947, and Tamil Nadu played a significant role in the formation of the Indian Republic. The state has been politically active, with the Dravidian movement advocating for regional autonomy and social reform.
7. **Cultural Heritage:**
Tamil Nadu has a rich cultural heritage, including classical dance forms like Bharatanatyam, traditional music, and a vibrant literary tradition. Temples like the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur and the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai are architectural marvels.
8. **Language and Literature:**
Tamil is one of the oldest surviving classical languages in the world. It has a vast body of literature, including the Sangam poetry, religious texts, and modern works by literary giants like Subramania Bharati and Kalki Krishnamurthy.
9. **Economy and Industrialization:**
Tamil Nadu has a diverse economy, with sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, and services playing crucial roles. The state has become an industrial hub with a focus on automotive manufacturing and information technology.
10. **Political Landscape:**
The state has been known for its dynamic and competitive politics. Dravidian parties, the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam), have dominated the political scene. Key leaders include M.G. Ramachandran, M. Karunanidhi, and J. Jayalalithaa.
11. **Social Reforms:**
Tamil Nadu has a history of social reform movements, addressing issues like caste discrimination and women's rights. Figures like Periyar E.V. Ramasamy played pivotal roles in these movements.
12. **Education and Science:**
Tamil Nadu is known for its educational institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Trichy. It has contributed significantly to fields such as science, technology, and healthcare.
13. **Cinema:**
The state is a hub for the Indian film industry, with the Tamil film industry, or "Kollywood," producing a vast number of films. Superstars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have gained international recognition.
14. **Recent Developments:**
Tamil Nadu has witnessed various infrastructural developments, including metro rail projects, and has continued to focus on economic growth and social welfare.
In summary, Tamil Nadu's history is a tapestry of ancient civilizations, colonial influence, political movements, cultural richness, and economic progress. Its legacy continues to shape the social, political, and cultural landscape of modern India.

Kalaignar Karunanidhi succeeded where north Indian leaders of social justice failed. I looked at the different itineraries of the social justice movements and tried to investigate how the RSS won the north but failed in Tamilnadu. Forever Kalaignar
The movement led by the troika of Periyar-Annadurai-Karunanidhi in Tamil Nadu has emerged as the most successful model of social justice and economic transformation in India…
I would like to argue that the success of this model was made possible due to the efforts of one of the greatest sons of Tamil Nadu, Dr. M. Karunanidhi.
Interestingly, north Indian leaders of the social justice movement failed to replicate the success story of Tamil Nadu and succumbed to the communal politics of the BJP/RSS.
Independent India has seen many silent revolutions — the rise of so-called lower castes in the political sphere — in different states at different times. Caste-based social imbalances continued to create havocs and tensions in the stagnant social paradigms.
But paradigms are never fixed. When old paradigms fail to sustain, the inherent tensions eventually lead to social changes and revolutions.
The Subalterns, underclass, farmers, artisans and other producing classes were earlier not represented adequately in various spaces. This created tensions in the political spaces.
This was the genesis of the social justice movement in India. This movement took shape and gathered momentum at different times in different geographical locations and states.
Tamil Nadu saw such paradigm shifts in the 1920s and again in 50s & 60s.
Thanthai Periyar was undoubtedly the greatest ideologue of Dravidian philosophy but it was Annadurai and his finest disciple Kalaignar who actually implemented the policies of social justice, rationalism, growth and self respect in Tamil Nadu.
Kaliagnar won assembly elections 13 times. He became Tamil Nadu’s chief minister on five occasions and ruled the state for almost two decades. Even when he was not the chief minister, his presence continued to guide the course of state politics and policies.
What made Karunanidhi special was his unique way of blending growth and social/gender justice. He was a social revolutionary, rationalist writer and thinker, champion of ideas like federalism and social justice, able administrator, master of electoral politics.
He took part in the language movement when he was in school and always opposed the hegemonic imposition of Hindi on Tamil people. He always worked to enable the masses and strived to make them able to work for their own welfare.
He tried to democratise religion and introduced the idea of all caste and gender priests in Tamil Nadu temples. This scheme was actually implemented during the mk stalin era.
Kalaignar changed the lives of millions of Tamil people for good and thus provided a role model and template for other Indian states and also for the Union government to follow. He introduced a common education board in Tamil Nadu and fought to retain it during the AIADMK rule.
He introduced a common habitat model for all castes — Samathuvapuram Housing Scheme — for the first time. His government introduced inheritance rights for the women in ancestral property. He also started reserving seats in local bodies for the women.
30 percent reservation for women in government jobs was one of his ideas. In many of his acts and deeds, he was actually ahead of his times.
Today Tamil Nadu has the highest number of working women in the country. This is one of the legacies of #DravidianModel, established by Annadurai and his disciple Kalaignar Karunanidhi.
Karunanidhi was credited for carrying forward the legacy of the Justice Party and Self-Respect Movement. He succeeded where north Indian stalwarts failed. Karunanidhi blended his ideology with governance and growth. That is his unique contribution to the idea of justice.
He remained an atheist all his life but when he got ill due to old age and his condition deteriorated, people of all faiths organised prayers at their religious places for him. Such was the life of Dr. M Karunanidhi.
He always wished to be buried next to his mentor Anna. Despite the AIADMK Govt creating hurdles, the Madras High Court order ensured that Karunanidhi’s last wish was fulfilled. Senior advocate and now Rajya Sabha MP @PWilsonDMK played a stellar role in that legal battle.
Karunanidhi emerged as the winner even after his death.
