January 2023: 1 of 12 mixtapes connecting the music of my childhood (Tamil pop) and the music that influenced me (sinophone indie) to the music of my new home (The Netherlands). This month: Ilaiyaraaja to Space Fruity Records, via Charlotte Adigéry and boba dream pop.

Track-by-track notes: 1. Ilaiyaraaja - Raaja Rajathi (1988) (from 'Agni Natchathiram') This song - from a 1988 Mani Ratnam film - was a childhood favourite, and maybe even seeded my future love for minimal post-punk?

2. 昏鴉 The Murky Crows - 我們如此超群絕倫怎能居於世俗所見 (2015) One of the first Taiwanese bands I adored, and my introduction to the branch of twee sinophone indie that would define my life between 2015 and 2020. 3. Ilaiyaraaja - Vikram Vikram (1986) I only discovered this classic thanks to the recent remake of the cult 80s Kamal Hasan spy film Vikram, but I was familiar with the writer Sujatha, whose works were serialized in magazines like Kumutham. My literary magazine of choice between ages 7 and 13 was Gokulam, where I submitted many terrible sci-fi short stories that were thankfully never published. Does anyone remember the Undir family stories? 4. Stereolab - Metronomic Underground (1996) Stereolab was the first band that got me into live bootlegs, rarities, B-sides, and "sessions" recordings, now a standard part of how I consume music. 5. METZ - Wet Blanket (2012) METZ was the first band I did a tour poster for! 6. Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupul - Ceci N'est Pas un Cliche (2022) Belgian duo. The best, most joyous, and most exciting concert I saw in the Netherlands since moving to Amsterdam in 2022. 7. Gino Cochise - Fo Woa (2022) Amsterdam hip-hop artist. The artist I most want to see live in the Netherlands in 2023. 8. Chaar Diwaari - Kaun Mera? (2022) I get excited by an average of 1 (one) Indian hip-hop song every year. This was the one for 2022. 9. Naujawanan Baidar - Khyber Sound (from Kabul to Peshawar in Fullmoon) (2020) From an incredible album of anti-imperialist Afghan-rooted experimental music, from the now Netherlands-based N.R. Safi. 10. bed - WET (2022) I saw bed play at the back of the Foo Concepts milk tea shop in Rotterdam, the crowd sipping boba and swaying to dream pop. A perfect gig. Normalize milk tea at shows! Normalize shows at milk tea shops!

11. Ts Bayandalai - 灰色公马 (2020) Seeing Bayandalai play live was always a transcendent experience, and this is the album that makes me miss Beijing the most.

Would anyone else say that Rum Bum Bum Aaarambum (from Michael Madhana Kama Rajan, by Ilaiyaraaja ) would fit into the Rockabilly genre? It reminded me of Jailhouse Rock (Elvis Presley) and Roller Skating's My Jam (from Care Bears Unlock the Music though of course that one has more '80's synth and EDM influences as well! The chorus - "ro-o-o-o-roller skating's my jam!" mainly strikes me as similar to Rum Bum Bum Aarambum) which fit into that genre or similar.

independent tamil hip hop then eventually into kollywood had an interesting moment in the early/mid 2000s where they were heavily sampling and remixing 80s tamil songs(madai thiranthu is the most famous one) but it was actually adk's remix of illamai itho that really had me looking deeper into ilaiyaraaja's discography outside of my parents attempt to acculturate me. tbh i cant think 80s tamil music without the maestro

For the uninitiated the composer of the music on this record is also a master craftsman who throughout the 1980s combined his off-the-wall ideas and sky high expectations using craft, experimental technology and a trusted team of participants to help concoct some truly bizarre local produce in mass quantity without compromise. Ilaiyaraaja, known to his family as Gnanadesikan, and to many of his zillion strong fan base as Isaignani (meaning musical genius in Tamil) represents the epitome of a nostalgic national treasure especially for a single solo composer in the Tamil micro music industry. His euphoric electrified music of the 70s and 80s (and beyond) captures every essence of joy and jubilation and is still used in celebration as much as it is celebrated in its own right. Ilaiyaraaja, a man of humble physical stature, sparsely equipped with a self-sufficient studio of compact electronic devices literally COMMANDS celebration with his single handed symphonies. Defying any fair comparisons in the Western world (besides inadequate parallels to Joe Meek and Jean-Pierre Massiera) it is also virtually impossible to find similar electronic mavericks in the East. Imagine a mixture between Turkey’s Ilhan Mimaroglu and the acidic synthesiser ragas of Charanjit Singh and you're still left short of the songs. Essentially, Ilaiyaraaja is to the local Kollywood film industry what RD Burman/Bappi Lahiri or M.Ashraf/Tafo are to Bollywood and Lollywood but then remember that Ilaiyaraaja is a one-man band, with a single vision and zero competition. This compilation reveals more tasty treats from Finders Keepers ongoing obsession with The Crown Prince Of Tamil Pop - focusing on his growth in the mid-1980s as a confident young composer adding freak pop fuel to the flickering flame of Kodambakkam's Kollywood film industry, while embracing domestic synthesiser technology and fusing the power of elec- tro and synth pop to his Carnatic canon.

Box Office: Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Film Psycho Opens to Packed Houses in Chennai

Filmmaker Mysskin’s latest offering Psycho, starring Udhayanidhi Stalin, Aditi Rao Hydari and Nithya Menen in the lead, is currently trending on Twitter courtesy all the praises coming it’s way. The psychological thriller, which hit the theatres today, has not only managed to impress the critics but also the audience it seems.

The movie, produced by Arun Mozhi Manickam, is reportedly faring well in Chennai. In fact, at the places, the shows are running full and therefore theatre owners are even planning to add a few more shows at night. Nikilesh Surya, executive director of Rohini Silver Screens, took to Twitter earlier in the day and wrote, “Good opening for #Psycho @RohiniSilverScr…More shows will be added for night show.”

Rakesh Gowthaman, owner of Vettri Theatres in Chennai, also took to Twitter and wrote, “Quite surprised with #Psycho opening … A full house in #RGBVettri.” VJ-turned-actor Abhishek Raaja, who seems to be mighty impressed with the film, also tweeted, “The 8 o clock show in @GKcinemas was organically filled. Great start for @Udhaystalin and #Mysskin #Psycho.”

Ruban Mathivanan, managing director of GK 2 cinemas, echoed the same views. He too tweeted, “#Psycho opens to packed house!! Almost 80% tickets sold online shows the expectation the film has!! #Mysskin @Udhaystalin #Ilaiyaraaja.” Well, going by the fantastic response, it won’t be surprising if Psycho puts up a good total on day 1 at the box office.

Initially, Psycho was supposed to release on December 27. But the makers postponed the film to January 24 in order to have a wider release across India. While Stalin has given a brilliant performance in Mysskin’s not-so-conventional thriller, the actor has one more film lined up for release this year. He will next be seen in Kannai Nambathe which is again a crime thriller being helmed by Mu Maran.
