Portman Announces $3.5 Million in New CARA Grants for Franklin County to Help Combat Opioid Crisis

 COLUMBUS, OH – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Site-based Program awarded Comprehensive Addiction & Recovery Act (CARA) grants totaling more than $3.5 million to help prevent and treat opioid addiction in Franklin County:   

“These CARA grants will help those on the frontlines in Franklin County to combat this crisis as we work together to help turn the tide of addiction. We need more partnerships between the federal government, state and local health officials, prevention experts, treatment providers, and law enforcement to work together to address this epidemic, and I’m pleased that my CARA legislation is making a difference. I’m grateful for the progress that we have made and will continue to make, and I will continue to fight for more resources to combat this epidemic. Recently, Congress passed by my bipartisan STOP Act, legislation to help stop dangerous synthetic drugs like fentanyl from being shipped into our communities, and lifted the cap on Medicaid funding for residential treatment facilities through my bipartisan Improving CARE Act. These measures will soon be signed into law next week.” 

NOTE: The City of Columbus – Public Safety, Division of Fire was awarded a $799,105 CARA grant that will support the development of partnerships between first responders and treatment providers who respond to overdoses as a team. In May, Senator Portman sent a letter to the DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) to consider the competitive grant application submitted by the City of Columbus. Columbus Public Health was awarded a $999,146 CARA grant that will help local and state agencies leverage information from a variety data sources to analyze substance abuse issues and identify potential solutions from public health, treatment, and public safety perspectives. Franklin County was awarded a $881,070 CARA grant and Franklin County Municipal Court was awarded a $899,602 CARA grant, both of which will provide staffing and treatment resources within jails and upon reentry into the community, as well as funding to support opioid courts which connect new arrestees to treatment services immediately upon arrest. Senator Portman’s bipartisan Comprehensive Addiction & Recovery Act (CARA) law ensures that federal resources are focused on evidence-based prevention, treatment, and recovery programs that have proven effective in local communities so that it can make a difference in people’s lives.

The water level is going down and as we approach low tide it's pretty far literally it's about five and a half feet down now when it reaches low tide at about 3:30 a.m. and it changes a little it will be at about 6 ft 5 that's pretty far down considering that it is raining and so forth and they're still removing diamonds from 50 to 100 and they did not come in to remove the plugs but they are taking the ships out.
