It took us a long time to process this email when we received it. We had to read the words several times before we could comprehend the message. And to be honest we still don’t know what to make of it. Do we feel anything? Apathetic? Not really sure. We keep looking at the words bitches referencing children and it’s offensive. Painful to believe children don’t need dolls. We hear so many stories of how dolls enriched people’s live. And when we hand delivered them it was a moment of elation, joy and sadness that we didn’t have enough for everyone. There is truth people need to eat. But joy is just as important! From @dominicanslovehaitiansmovement - March 3, 1865 marks the day when Queen Isabell II signed the treaty annulling the annexation effectively giving Dominican Independence back after 17 years of resistance and revolution. Saturday March 3rd, 153 years from this date we come together to celebrate our forefather’s resistance to Spanish domination. On this day honoring our ancestors and reimagining our island nation’s reconciliation. We ask what would our experience be liked today if we honored 1865 as the true year of our independence. If we recognized the love of our Haitian brethren in liberating all black people from bondage, servitude and oppression. Come celebrate with us as we continue to resist impressions of colonization, as we reimagine the unification of our racial identities to reconcile with the myths created by the past. 6-7 pm we call it the “Drunk In Love” hour serving a special mixer of Barbancourt and Brugal. Come taste the joy of our robust island along with some tasty finger treats. 7-8pm we’ll have a “Love Exchange” where we ask you to share, self reflect and express your thoughts. 8-9pm our wonderful artists Regine Romain @regineromain and Mariela Regaldo @marielaregal plus others will share their most intimate thoughts. This is a visual representation of how words do effect us. As they hold vibrations and energy. Two plants one bombarded by verbal abuse the other receives only compliments. Now how many of us through generations have lived being bombarded by negative advertisements, negative representation, negative words, negative spaces. We give thanks to our ancestors, family and spiritual guides for shining us up. For giving us and reminding us of our glory. But for many of us still today we are demeaned and subjugated in text books, politics and the media. Friday I was so enchanted and elated to meet up with Lisa @yoganqueensx! My girl had gifts!!! This lovely big red bag of LOVE!! This bag if from her and her mother. She said I bought three dolls and my mom bought the rest. 11 toys in all!! Whoohoo!! Back in the 90’s her mom was so offended to see children in Cuba with white dolls she bought black dolls for them. And so was super excited to bring me these dolls. These dolls that we are collecting will be going to the Dominican Republic in May. Afterwards we’ll be continuing to receive dolls that will be going to Haiti and PR. These non white dolls are to uplift our children and for them to be empowered in seeing themselves and to affirm that they matter.
