Song Review: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - “San Joaquin” (Live in Studio)
Making their bluegrass instruments mimic a train, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway are heading down the line to sell some weed in “San Joaquin.”
A Tuttle/Ketch Secor co-write, the high-test track follows “El Dorado” and “Next Rodeo” from City of Gold, out July 21.
The track burns down the track in three minutes, leaving just enough time for solos from Tuttle’s axe, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes’ fiddle, Dominick Leslie’s mandolin, Kyle Tuttle’s banjo and Shelby Means’ upright bass as Tuttle sings the smuggler’s story:
Riding on the San Joaquin/bringing in some Humboldt green … /when I get to Richmond I’ll be gold/soon as this suitcase is sold/’til then I’m rolling down the line/just looking for the next high time/riding on the San Joaquin
“San Joaquin” is not a lyrical masterpiece. But the music is mighty.

Grammy–winning singer, songwriter, and musician Molly Tuttle and her band, Golden Highway, will release their new album, City of Gold, July 21, on Nonesuch. You can pre-order and hear the track “El Dorado” now here.
Produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and recorded in Nashville, City of Gold was inspired by Tuttle’s near constant touring with Golden Highway—fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, bassist Shelby Means, and banjo player Kyle Tuttle—and their growth together as musicians and performers, cohering as a band. These 13 tracks, mostly written by Tuttle and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show), capture the electric energy of the band’s live shows by highlighting each members’ musical strengths. City of Gold also features special guest Dave Matthews on the song “Yosemite.”

Five Must-See Shows from the Initial Americanafest Lineup
The initial lineup of the 2024 Americana Music Festival and Conference has been revealed. With dozens of choices (and remember, that's just the first release), it's difficult to decide what to see. We've gone through the lineup and pulled five artists who we think are must-see sets at Americanafest 2024. So far, that is.
Bronwyn Keith-Hynes When Molly Tuttle put together her bluegrass band Golden Highway, she had her choice of instrumentalists. And with a bluegrass band, no instrument was more important than the fiddle. So when she tapped Bronwyn Keith-Hynes as Golden Highway's fiddler, she was getting a 2-time IBMA Fiddle Player of the Year, as well as an accomplished solo artist. Her latest album I Built a World has an impressive list of guest appearances, from Sam Bush to Dierks Bentley to her boss Molly Tuttle, making this a set ripe for the kind of guest sit-in that makes Americanafest special.
Mike Farris If you're looking for the Americanafest set most likely to have you on your feet dancing, look no further than Mike Farris. The Screaming Cheetah Wheelies frontman and prolific solo artist's mix of blues, Southern gospel, and soul is given a high-energy injection. While he knows his way around a ballad (check out his cover of Mary Gauthier's “Mercy Now”), it's when he cuts loose that his sets become truly special.
John Oates Acoustic Band Anytime a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer graces an Americanafest stage, it's worth the wait in line to see them. Even the largest Americanafest venue is smaller than you'll ever see these stars normally. When the show is booked as “One Night Only,” you can put it in ink. Considering its prominent place (and font size) on the lineup poster, Americanafest knows the level of special they have with John Oates (of Hall & Oates fame) performing a one-off acoustic set. Oates has been a guest at Americanafest before and seems to relish the community so expect him to leave it all on the stage.
Tony Trischka- Earl Jam: A Tribute to Earl Scruggs Anytime you see the word “Tribute” in an Americanafest show, consider it. While you can catch most of the lineup any given year on tour at another time, the tribute shows happen once and never again. And with the level of Americana talent on hand for the festival and awards show, you never know who is going to show up. That's doubly the case when the tribute, to banjo legend Earl Scruggs, is led by Tony Trischka, who has done more to innovate with that instrument than anyone not named Bela Fleck. Scruggs is, rightly, revered among Americana fans so expect both his name and Trischka's connections to deliver a mind-blowing list of guests.
Willie Watson Willie Watson has been on my “must-see” list at Americanafest before and will continue to be so any year he performs. Watson is one of the most thorough chroniclers of roots music history that has ever lived. But his shows aren't dry history lessons. Watson's delivery is earnest and intense, his voice cutting through the silence of a hushed crowd as he holds court with a long-forgotten song from the 19th Century.
Americanafest 2024 is being held September 17-21 in venues across Nashville. Festival passes are on sale now. Stay tuned for more Concert Hopper coverage of Americanafest as future lineup drops happen!

Bronwyn Keith-Hynes
...and the release of her first solo album: Fiddler’s Pastime
Available now on her site!
Originally from Charlottesville, VA, Bronwyn picked up the fiddle at age 3 and never looked back. The daughter of a first generation Irish American father and southern American mother, her first musical love was traditional Irish fiddling. But after a childhood of deep immersion in Irish music and culture, she traced its immigration across the Atlantic ocean and into the Appalachian Mountains and found a sound that resonated even more completely with her in the bluegrass music she heard as a teenager.

Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway Release Live Version of “Crooked Tree” to Mark End of Alopecia Awareness Month
That Molly Tuttle doffed her wig is the least-remarkable thing about a freshly released live version of “Crooked Tree.”
It’s the performance that’s remarkable, silly.
Recorded during Golden Highway’s March 28 gig at Nashville’s Station Inn, the video was issued to mark the last day of Alopecia Awareness Month.
“I wrote this song with Melody Walker about embracing the things that make us unique and different,” Tuttle said in a statement. “Losing my hair at age 3 taught me over time that it’s OK to be a crooked tree.”
The track finds guitarist Tuttle trading solos with Dobro master Jerry Douglas as she and her youthful band - which also includes fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, banjoist Kyle Tuttle and bassist Shelby Means - prove bluegrass’ future is secure as they sing about the beauty in being true to oneself.
Who am I to wish I wasn’t just the way I am, Tuttle sings.
And it’s obvious she means it.

Quick Q and A with Mile Twelve
Quick Q and A with Mile Twelve
Mile Twelve makes some tasty bluegrass music.  Nothing is more joyous than seeing people doing what they are meant to be doing and that’s the case with this band.  Mile Twelve consists of some of the most outstanding and versatile pickers and players around: Evan Murphy (guitar), Nate Sabat (bass), BB Bowness (banjo). Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle), and David Benedict (mandolin). Mile Twelve raises…

Album Review: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - City of Gold
There’s some good listening to be had on City of Gold despite the lack of inspired and original songwriting.
The latest from Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - guitarist-singer Tuttle, fiddler Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, mandolinist Dominick Leslie, bassist Shelby Means and banjo picker Kyle Tuttle - features virtuosic bluegrass playing and singing, a guest spot from Dave Matthews and solid production from Tuttle and Jerry Douglas.
But Tuttle and co-writer Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) too often borrow melodies from others, as with “When My Race is Run” (“I Shall be Released”), “More Like a River” (“Buckets of Rain”) and “Goodbye Mary” (“Find the Cost of Freedom”); wallow in cliché as on “Next Rodeo;” create sequels like “Alice in the Bluegrass” to accompany Tuttle’s fondness for covering “White Rabbit;” or get a little too rambunctious for the song’s own good as on “Down Home Dispensary.”
Hello, legislator, the voters have spoken/there’s too much politicin’ and not enough tokin’, Tuttle sings on the warp-speed novelty track.
Through sheer talent - and stronger tracks like “El Dorado” - Tuttle & Golden Highway will City of Gold to work. But the source material is lacking sparkle.
Grade card: Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway - City of Gold - C+

Album Review: Jason Carter - Lowdown Hoedown
Twenty-five years after On the Move, Jason Carter is back with Lowdown Hoedown.
The Del McCoury Band and Travelin’ McCourys fiddler and in-demand session man called in a bunch of friends and favors to make the LP, which is not a fiddle record.
Carter does play, of course, but it’s his sonorous baritone that carries bluegrass covers of Bruce Hornsby’s “King of the Hill,” John Hartford’s “The Six O’Clock Train and a Girl with Green Eyes,” the Eagles’ “Midnight Flyer,” the Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song” and nine additional tracks.
The McCoury family all play and sing along, as do friends including Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Billy Strings, Marty Stuart, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Vince Gill, Tim O’Brien, Aoife O’Donovan and Sarah Jarosz among others.
Such large collaborations often become too busy and wind up unfocused on wax. Carter is too adept to let that happen and Lowdown Hoedown makes the case for another solo record before the next 25 years slip away.
Grade card: Jason Carter - Lowdown Hoedown - B
