It messes me up how hard Kouyou believed she was protecting Kyouka from the ADA. How much she truly thought that since Kyouka built her skills in a place as dark as the PM, she could not longer live a normal life.
She's not pulling evil manipulation tactics because she wants Kyouka for herself and lies to her to break her mind. She's 100% believing her own words because that's the lesson she got from her traumatic experience as a child: hope will disappoint and leave you broken; the people who tell you they can show you a better world cannot follow through on that promise.
She tells Kyouka she'll understand when she's older. Kouyou wishes she didn't have to live through being told she could see the world outside of (the Old Boss') mafia and then seeing the person who made her that promise be killed for it. Seeing her teenage dreams of peace reduced to nothing. She would probably say that she despises the man who gave her hope for having done exactly that.
"It would have been better if she'd come get Kyouka earlier instead of waiting" she says. Because to her the pattern is already established: Kyouka has been promised better. But those promises are lies, they can't be anything else. So now she will inevitably suffer.
All because the situation, however different it is this time, is making Kouyou relive her own nightmare from half her life ago.

There’s just something deeply disorienting about seeing Dazai act like a chaotic demigod of mischief 99% of the time, but then suddenly losing all composure the second that poisonous gas began killing the hostages in this week’s episode.
He yelled at Atsushi to stay back in a tone of voice we’d never heard before, then he psychically wrangled Kunikida away from the window, clearly afraid his partner would get himself killed. The gas could have harmed Dazai, too, if Kunikida had interfered, but I don’t think that was the point.
I think we’re just used to seeing Dazai ready for anything. I think we’re used to seeing him fight for the ADA, but not for individual people, and absolutely not in a state of panic or fear. To me, this is one of the first times we get a glimpse of how much Dazai actually cares for these two.

One thing I love about Kunikida and Dazai's dynamic is Kunikida's ability to still believe in him so much he still falls for his jokes. Like you know this has happened so many times yet still he dutifully will write down Dazai's suggestion in pen no less. But Dazai is also kind enough to not let him carry on with it too long.

please imagine 17 yr old skk sitting down to create the names for their plans. Fresh new double black duo name, the pressure is on. There’s a whiteboard involved. A lot of yelling. Chuuya wants everything to sound cool. A sharpie gets thrown at supersonic speeds. It takes 3 weeks.
