Album Number Four Hundred Ninety One. “Peter Gabriel” is the third solo studio album by the English rock musician #petergabriel, released on 30 May 1980 by #charismarecords. The album, produced by #stevelillywhite, has been acclaimed as Gabriel's artistic breakthrough as a solo artist. AllMusic wrote that it established him as "one of rock's most ambitious, innovative musicians". My copy is of the 1983 #geffenrecords release - GHSP 2035. Building on the experimental sound of his previous self-titled studio album, it saw Gabriel embracing post-punk and new wave with an art rock sensibility. Gabriel also explored more overtly political material with the anti-war song "#gameswithoutfrontiers" (which became a No. 4 hit and remains his joint highest-charting single in the UK) and the anti-apartheid protest song "Biko", which remembered the murdered activist #SteveBiko. In the US, the album was titled Peter Gabriel III. The album is also often referred to as Melt, owing to its cover photograph by #hipgnosis. A stúdiómunkálatok során jelen volt egy producer is, Roy Thomas Baker, akinek annyira tetszett a srácok „Keep Yourself Alive” című száma, hogy el is kérte a demót. A Queen tagjainak sikerült néhány megbeszélésen részt venniük, azonban hiába voltak magabiztosak és hiába volt profi demó a kezükben, senki nem vette őket igazán komolyan. Végül a Charisma Records vezetője, Tony Stratton-Smith, 25 ezer fontos ajánlatot tett nekik. Ez akkor rendkívül magas összegnek számított, főleg olyan fiatal zenészeknek, mint a Queen tagjai, akik szinte napról napra éltek akkoriban. Épp ezért volt megdöbbentő a Queen válasza, ugyanis elutasították az ajánlatot.

A Charisma Recordshoz tartozott ebben az időben, a Genesis nevű zenekar is. Kecsegtető ajánlatokat kaptunk, olyasmiket mondtak, hogy mi leszünk a következő T-Rex, de nagyon-nagyon óvatosan jártunk el, nem akartunk fejest ugrani semmibe. Nem akartuk, hogy közönséges zenekarként kezeljenek minket. Úgy voltunk vele, hogy „Vagy komolyan vesztek minket, vagy hagyjuk az egészet!”.” – mesélte később Freddie. Döntésükből kristálytisztán látszott, hogy nem csak hitték, hogy jók, hanem tudták, hogy azok.

Az ajánlat elutasítása után kénytelenek voltak visszatérni a londoni és a London környéki koncertezgetésekhez. Mindeközben Freddie szabadidejében azon kísérletezgetett, hogy hogyan is nézzenek ki a színpadon. Egy ismerőse, Wendy Edmonds így emlékszik vissza Freddie törekvéseire: „Freddie tudott varrni. Elég jól is ment neki, például fel tudta varrni ő maga a flittereket a ruhára. Én megvarrtam neki azokat a tapadós felsőket, amiket viselhetett a színpadon. Nagyon konkrétan tudta, hogy mit akar, és mondta, hogy mit, honnan másoljak le.”.

A producer, Roy Thomas Baker, was present during the studio work and liked the guys' "Keep Yourself Alive" so much that he asked for a demo. The Queen's members were able to attend some meetings, but despite being confident and having a professional demo in their hands, no one took them seriously. Finally, Charisma Records chief Tony Stratton-Smith offered them £ 25,000. This was an extremely high sum at that time, especially for young musicians like the Queen’s members who were living day by day. That is why the Queen's response was staggering, as the offer was rejected.

Also belonged to Charisma Records at that time, the Genesis band. The Queen felt that they would always rank second only after Genesis, spend a lot of money on new equipment, and they didn’t think the publisher was good enough. “As soon as the demo was finished, we knew that the sharks were circling around us. We got promising offers, something that we were going to be the next T-Rex, but we were very, very careful not to skip to nothing. We didn't want us to be treated as ordinary bands. We were told, "They either take us seriously or we leave the whole thing.” - Freddie said later. Their decision made it crystal clear that they not only believed they were good, but they knew they were.

After rejecting the offer, they were forced to return to concerts in London and around London. Meanwhile, in his spare time, Freddie was experimenting with how to look on stage. A friend, Wendy Edmonds, recalls Freddie's aspirations: “Freddie could sew. It worked out pretty well for him, for example, he could sew sequins on the dress himself. I sewed him the sticky tops he could wear on the stage. He knew exactly what he wanted and said what, where to copy it.”

Sir John Betjeman was the British Poet Laureate from 1972 to his death in 1984. He was a much-loved cultural figure, featuring regularly on TV and radio, championing architecture, Victoriana and English towns. I was aware of him at an early age since he had a bit of a thing for Diss, my hometown from the ages of 8 to 18. So much so, that he filmed a television documentary on it in 1964. For reasons I have yet to discover, he also recorded albums of his poems set to quite magical musical accompaniment composed and arranged by Jim Parker. The first of these was Banana Blush. It was followed up in the same year (1974) by this one, Late Flowering Love. There were a further two in 1977 and 1981. I was aware of none of this when I came across this LP at a Utrecht Record Fair for €1. I bought it on curiosity alone and can honestly say it’s one of the best random purchases I’ve made. It’s released on the Charisma label, whose Mad Hatter logo I’m familiar with from all my Genesis records. It’s a more apt pairing than you might expect, with something of the English psychedelic folk whimsy of Soft Machine and the Canterbury scene. Betjeman is quintessentially English, and the subject matter here is quintessentially Betjeman. It wouldn’t have worked without Betjeman’s brilliantly characterful delivery, and Parker’s quite masterful accompaniments – expertly deploying brass band, string quartet, and jazzy rhythm sections as befitting the nature of the poem. Album Number Five Hundred Four

“Abacab” is the eleventh studio album by Genesis, released on 18 September 1981 by #charismarecords. After their 1980 tour in support of their previous album, #Duke (1980), the band took a break before they reconvened in 1981 to write and record a new album. #Abacab is the first Genesis album recorded at The Farm, a recording studio bought by the group in Chiddingfold, Surrey. It marked the band's development from their progressive roots into more accessible and pop-oriented songs, and their conscious decision to write songs unlike their previous albums.

My copy is on Atlantic Records - SD 19313.

Abacab received a mostly positive reception from critics and was a commercial success for the band, becoming their second No. 1 LP on the UK Albums Chart and their first to reach the top ten of the US Billboard 200, peaking at No. 7. Genesis released four singles from the album, the most successful being "Abacab" and "#noreplyatall".
