i think people somewhat talk about how horrifically tragic hal's situation is, but i frequently wonder about dirk's reaction to hal's situation once he pulls his head out of his ass. consider this:

you effectively trapped a thirteen year old copy of yourself in a bodiless prison and kept him there, denied him a form, called him dangerous for three years straight and undervalued him at every time. you blamed everything on him. you knew he liked jake, or at least wanted to be on good terms with him, and YOU fucked up YOUR relationship with him then told him it was his fault, that he was dangerous. and just like you believed some of the shit he said about you, he might have actually believed that in return. at his request you finally gave him a body (after threatening to kill him, might you add) yet when he started panicking at the fact that he was experiencing guilt for the first time in three years you laughed in his face. in the moment, he demanded you fix this. and considering the weird verbiage of the troll you fused him with, he might have been begging instead. fuck dave, fuck yourself, he's the closest thing you had to a brother and you did that to him. he was right in the end. it's your fault. out of all of your splinters, yourself included, he's the only one who even so much as tried to use his functionality for your direct benefit—fuck whatever you thought of your bro, he was the closest thing you had to an actual brother and you did that to him. he was right in the end. it's your fault. he probably knew this. "and still in the end in his last days he goes down doing what you made him to do (what he made himself to do): serving you, putting his neck out on the block so you could aim for the head" (@choctalksalot). and now you'll never know.
