I am a firm believer that the Baker and Cinderella have zero romantic feelings for each other.
Cinderella’s arc is about her learning to stand up for herself and rejecting the traditional roles of womanhood that a leading lady in a fairytale is put into.
She’s not a servant. She’s not a princess. She’s not a wife. She’s trying to figure out who the he’ll she is.
The Baker is probably mid-late 20s (because he isn’t much older than Rapunzel), and I don’t think Cinderella is a child (maybe she’s 19-22), but she’s still so young. The Baker is quite literally “meant to have children.” He is very much an adult whereas Cinderella is still in the process of entering it.
I don’t want her to be the Baker’s lover because he doesn’t need another one, especially while he’s grieving his recently dead wife. And I don’t want her to be Red and Jack’s mother. Jack literally says, “I don’t want another mother, I want a friend (and a pet).” So I see her as more of an older sister figure to the kids, and a friend/companion to the Baker. They’re partners, but not romantically.
She’s still growing up. Let her find who she is. Let her find her “something in-between.”

I found myself listening to “No One Else” and thought about how lovely Denée Benton’s Cinderella was in ITW

and, like, listen, i know whereof i speak. i love the animated cinderella and snow white. i love my johanna barkers and my ITW rapunzels. i love lucie manette and kate nickleby. but it is actually very easy to love these characters, while also acknowledging the ways in which they are badly written, and/or products of misogyny, even if they are interesting characters with admirable personality traits. i am fucking begging people to do better in their cultural and media literacy.

ROUND 1D, MATCH 4 OUT OF 16!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda Under the Cut:
Into the Woods:
The embodiment of "Aren't you tired of being nice? Don't you just want to go apeshit?" but then she eventually decides that even if she's tired of being nice it's still worthwhile to try, and that doesn't mean she had to let people walk all over her
Her story is so fascinating, and she feels more realistic than other depictions of Cinderella. Most ItW characters have some fatal flaw- hers is her indecisiveness. After she goes to the ball, it isn’t a spell ending at midnight causing her to leave- it’s her fear of being discovered as a peasant. But the Prince loves her, so should she stay? But what would he do if she finds out she’s poor? But what if he wants that in a wife? But she wouldn’t fit in. But how would she know if she fits in if she doesn’t know who she is? This dilemma is what leads to her leaving her shoe on the steps of the palace and seeing if he comes back for her. But we know this story, she gets with the Prince and they live happily ever after… until act 2. The tree marking her mother’s grave has fallen down due to a rampaging giant, and she goes to mourn the loss of it. While she’s there, she learns of heartbreaking news- her husband cheated on her. Now this could lead to another example of her indecisiveness, but by now she’s grown from her last venture into the woods. She knows exactly what she needs to do and how to do it. She meets up with her companions from act 1 and comes up with a plan to kill the giant. But before this, she notices one member of the group, Little Red Riding Hood, is looking gloomy. The girl’s mother and granny had died due to the wrath of the giant, and she’s questioning her morality because she’s about to kill somebody. Cinderella, who knows about losing a mother, comforts her with the heartwrenching No One Is Alone, where she assures Red that there will always be someone looking out for her. She then runs into the Prince, and she confronts him on his infidelity. She is given the option to return to her marriage with him, but she denies and tells him to consider her “a victim of the giant.” After the giant is defeated, she moves in the with other survivors of the attack and helps our main character the Baker raise his newborn baby, as well as take care of Red and Jack. I wouldn’t consider anybody in ItW a good person- grey morality is a major theme in the show, after all- but out of the main cast, Cinderella is easily the most moral. Also she feels super aromantic so we love that for her too.
Into the woods is an incredible deconstruction of fairytales in general, and her arc is my favorite. Her story focuses on being a damsel because she doesn’t know what she wants.  She even purposely leaves her shoe so she doesn’t have to choose if the prince finds her. The show ends with her realizing that she has to have agency even if the choices she makes might be bad because that’s just part of being an adult. Also she has great songs.
SHE JUST WANTS A FUN NIGHT OUT, NONE OF THIS SUDDEN QUEENLY RESPONSIBILITY!
in this version she intentionally leaves behind the shoe because she's indecisive over whether she wants to stay at home which is familiar but horrible or go with the prince to the palace which is a whole new world for her she isn't used to at all and doesn't feel like she belongs. by leaving the shoe behind she makes it the prince's choice instead. but after she does marry him she still finds herself rather unhappy especially considering her prince is unfaithful and just all around sucks. by the end she decides to move in with a baker after leaving the prince finally finding the in between she was looking for. it's a really interesting take on her imo.
Okay we all know the movie adaptation is garbage but hear me out: I think that Anna Kendrick does a really good job of portraying her in the movie. She’s not nearly as bad as the Baker who was played by James fucking Cordon. With what she’s given, she does a really good job of portraying this version of Cinderella, who to me feels like a lost child that now as an adult is trying to figure out her place in the world. She’s indecisive but she wasn’t given the same tools in life as others to become that more confident and strong version of herself, which she finally is able to do by the end.
SHES SILLY!!! i had a huge essay but i realize now that i should probably save it for it's own post so here's a shortened version: -A huge part of her character arc revolves around realizing the prince is an asshole and she wasn't actually in love with him, but an idea of him (she's so comphet lesbian coded) -She can talk to birds and they do favors for her, but people think it's weird -She actually sometimes enjoys cleaning, when her step family isn't forcing her to do it. -Has multiple bangers, the first being On The Steps of The Palace where she basically goes "hm i think my life would be much easier and greatly improved if i just let other people decide my future for me" (aka leaving her shoe on the palace steps and letting fate decide if the prince finds her or not). The second is No One Is Alone, where she has what I would argue is one of the best solos in the entire show -Overall I think she's a really layered adaptation of Cinderella that seems like the standard kind no personality princess but is actually a really good study on romance and getting what you want and also shes a huge girlfail and we love her for that <3 ok bye Girlypop's husband cheats on her with the Baker's Wife and is told this by birds. That entire sentence is just batshit and no other Cinderella version has this. Not to mention the keep the step-sisters being blinded by said birds
Once Upon a Time:
Look. This is Season 1 episode 4. When I still watched this show. Girl is pregnant (and I guess has been for like  28 years?!?) and in trouble now. See she is Cinderella except Rumplestiltzkin has trampled all over her story by proofing away her fairy godmother. It’s not her fault her fairy tale was hijacked and then cast out in favor of a new Cinderella down the line.
I've only seen up to the first few episodes of season 4, but it really seems that she didn't get that much of a happy ending - or she did, and then it was ruined. In the flashbacks in the Enchanted Forest, it's revealed that he fairy godmother was killed by Rumpelstiltskin who helped her in return for her firstborn, so, after her marriage, they decide to help Snow White capture Rumpel once she's pregnant. During all of this, her husband (Thomas) goes to a well to fetch water - and then disappears. I'm currently making my way through season 4 and I have very little faith that they'll ever explain why he just disappeared. Then, in Storybrooke, she's alone, heavily pregnant, and desperate enough to steal. In the end, she's reunited with Thomas/Sean Herman and has her baby, and she's seen on a night out with Red Riding Hood and Snow White where Sean proposes, but I think the fact that her happy ending isn't as happy as people think it is fascinating. Since I've not finished watching all of them, it might be best to take someone else's propaganda, since they might know more than me.
She's an underrated Cinderella who in our world is a pregnant young woman abandoned by everyone and who tries to preserve her relationship with her boyfriend (the prince charming in their original story) who isn't sûre he's ready to be a father but who loves her deeply and decides to finally be the man she deserves. Also she saves her step sister from her step mother six seasons later

it's almost been a year since i first hyperfixated on into the woods so let's get back into my cinderella bullshit! people seem to forget that into the woods is a satire sometimes so let's state that real quick before i get into the nitty-gritty-- on the steps of the palace is meant to be funny-- satirical, if you will, and cinderella's character arc is meant to be reflective of someone who slowly grows to scorn societal expectations of how women should react when faced with the choice to marry a rich handsome prince.
okay so let's get into why i think my beloved itw cindy can be read multiple ways; first, we've got the aroace lens. her dissatisfaction within her marriage with the prince, her disregard for romantic love, almost? she evidently does not want this. she likes (or is she forced into liking) caring for people in the platonic sense; when it comes to romance, however, she starts to quail and i think that's really quite interesting. this response can also be read into her not wanting a man for a romantic partner (lesbian cindy is my favourite reading but let's not get into that; that deserves a whole brainrot post), being pressed into marriage with the prince because it's what society tells her is right for a woman of her age and station, or just, you know. WANTING TO SOCIALISE WITH PEOPLE AT A BALL, because the only people that she converses with at home are her demeaning stepfamily, distant father, and the birds who flutter in occasionally to help her with things.
the last one is where the satire really comes in, i think, because what cinderella wants is freedom and autonomy; not a prince. that is why she struggles so much with making that decision of staying or leaving; she's never been in control of her fate before and she doesn't know if she should go with what society wants or what she personally wants, so she ultimately concedes her power of choice and lets the deus ex machina to do it for her. I've got a whole other post about the motif of decision making in itw somewhere on my blog (if you go to the into the woods tag and scroll back far enough it'll be there) but yeah. that's all i wanted to say i guess. i think this last bit is reflective of what happens in society; we long for something, but when it's given to us, we throw it away because we're unsure what to do now that we've got it. crazy, huh.

Trivender au headcanon masterlist
Trina Mora: first of all her last name comes from a sims 4 falsettos game file i hsve where i just tried to randomize her a last name and this is what i got. She's bisexual and has depression i don't think anyone ever doubted that. Also a lot more chaotic in this au than canon? That's just the effect Lavender has on her ig.
Lavender Baker: MY LOVE!! I already explained her name's origin in the pinned post. Like my url implies she's trans and she's also bisexual. Girlboss. Polyamorous but thankfully no longer a cheater we don't talk about that storyline in the original. It didn't happen. How did she get pregnant if she's trans you may ask? I don't fucking know how did Cinderella talk to a tree by that logic. There's no logic in the itw universe <3
Baker Baker: he's a baker if you couldn't guess. Transmasc bisexual wet cat of a man. Malewife. Left handed. Severely traumatized. Daddy issues. Also both him and his wife are jewish, naturally.
Bread Baker: Baker and Lavender's child. His name is Bread. I don't have much to say about him.
Jack: gay gay homosexual gay. Autism. Zero braincells whatsoever.
Little red riding hood: non binary icon 😌. because i said so. Also lesbian. You can't tell me what to do. Also autism but a different genre of autism than Jack.
Cinderella: also a lesbian with the worst case of comphet I've ever seen.
Milky white: bigender icon.
Marvin Gardens: just my regular headcanons for any incarnation of him. ADHD, bpd, being a weatherman. Controversally i did go with the Gardens last name. I'm sorry.
Whizzer Brown: autism, and demiromanticism. Also photographer Whizzer since everyone seems to love this headcanon. And he's from Omaha Nebraska just for the fun of it. He and Marvin have two cats btw he bought both of them which Marvin initially didn't approve of but accepted later on. They're named Chess and Racquet because I'm uncreative.
Mendel fucking Weisenbachfeld: BISEXUAL!! Bi Mendel real!! He canonically didn't earn his diploma in this one 0/10 worst psychiatrist ever
Mr Bungee: not actually homophobic, he himself is gay, but he is a capitalist. Cis white rich gay man. He's also an absolute loser. Frogs.
Jason Gardens: I'm so sorry for making him get the gardens name too. AUTISTIC as hell also aromantic and possibly aplatonic i'm projecting too hard probably. Jack, Red, Cinderella and Bread all count as his siblings and i would love to make content of these kids in the future
Charlotte and Cordelia: idk how exactly they fit into the au except Trina definitely did talk to them first thing when having her sexuality crisis. Charlotte probably has anxiety idk. And some level of non binary.
The witch/Luna: lesbian. But also arospec. And asexual possibly. And autistic now that i think about it. One look at the baker's father was what made her realize she's not attracted to men. She's mostly just done with everyone's bullshit. Her name is Luna i don't know why i decided that. This is my au so my rules. She somehow ends up dating Dot i have no clue how that happens.
Dot: local she/they. Token neurotypical. Some flavor of queer. Idk how she became part of the story. Louis the baker she dated is not the same baker as Baker Baker our local baker, they're actually rivals since they work in the same business.
George Seurat: JUST TO CLARIFY I'm talking about the musical version i wouldn't make headcanons for a real life person!! Autistic. He/she pronouns (don't ask just don't.) doggirl in the same way catgirls are catgirls. As I'm writing this I'm regretting all my life choices.

yes lesbian red. anyways same anon hi. i have a hyperfixation on itw so!!! baker n his wife ¿
Anon you are seriously tempting me to kiss you on the lips with this ask you know damn well I have a soft spot for those two
Baker
Sexuality Headcanon: like most Chip Zien characters except in trousers Marvin, this fucker is so bisexual you wouldn't even believe it
Gender Headcanon: transmasc purely because it's funny with the whole can't have a child because of a curse thing like honey i think it might not be the curse
A ship I have with said character: i mean. his wife. ...also Trina falsettos because of the polyamory.
A BROTP I have with said character: I'm going to say Jack. I'm realizing I can say Jack to every character for this question. Jack has ultimate bro energy ig.
A NOTP I have with said character: him and cinderella's prince but it's like a funny notp because Gavin Creel out of all people implied something happening between them and i hate it so much but like in a funny way. It's not the same kind of disgust reaction as little red and Jack. It's still disgust but a different kind of disgust.
A random headcanon: his full name is Baker Baker. Also because we have no information on what happened after his parents died I'm choosing to believe he just raised himself from when he was a baby. I'd seriously like a genuine explanation of what happened there by the way because we do know his mother died and father left when he was a really small child and i don't think he would've been able to take care of himself. Who raised him? Does he have step parents? A somewhat sweet explanation for this I'd like to believe in is the witch realized he wouldn't survive on his own so she put a spell on him that keeps him alive until he's old enough to take care of himself. Maybe. We can never know.
General Opinion over said character: he is everything to me you do NOT understand. He along with Marvin are the definition of the word blorbo and poor little meow meow in my mind. Everything about him. His daddy issues. The green green hat. The fact that he can't find the cheese cloth. The way he drank the respect women juice while in the woods. The fact that he actually felt bad for Jack after his wife tricked him. His little dance when he got the money. No more. "Maybe i just wasn't meant to have children" while surrounded by children he just accidentally adopted. The fact that he's canonically left handed in the original thank you Chip Zien for being born with the same dominant hand as me. I'm talking too much about this man.
Alright let's do the baker's wife now if you thought i have too much canon divergent shit made up about the baker wait until you read all this
Sexuality Headcanon: bi bi bi bi bi bi bi bi bi
Gender Headcanon: she's also trans for the same reasons as her husband it just makes the whole story funnier. Plus you can't argue with it using logic because like. "How did she get pregnant if she's trans?" idk how did Cinderella get a dress from a tree. This is why i love Into the woods. I can make up whatever bullshit and it works because logic just doesn't exist here.
A ship I have with said character: on one hand with her husband definitely them forever but on the other hand, trivender (Trina from falsettos and Lavender aka the baker's wife we'll get to where the name came from) is so close to my heart.
A BROTP I have with said character: Cinderella definitely i love their conversations (aside from the underlying reason behind her questions about the prince)
A NOTP I have with said character: fucking cinderella's prince i understand why it happened from a narrative standpoint. I really do. Doesn't stop me from hating it.
A random headcanon: okay here we go, the major one: Lavender. Lavender Baker my beloved. The headcanon itself came from an early trivender fanfiction which wasn't good and i was trying to build up something bigger than I have the motivation for, my bad, it doesn't matter. The one thing I'm glad I did was coming up with Trina naming her Lavender because she didn't have a chosen name yet. Considering lavenders are already my favorite flower and that lavender is considered the gayest color (lmao) she's just Lavender to me now. I'm obsessed
General Opinion over said character: if i were to summarize her in short it'd be "girlboss with a darkside". Because that's what she is. I still can't believe she died.

hello dolly <3 and into the woods!
dolly is such a cute show, i have always been fond of it! i have a soft spot for frothy midcentury victwardian musicals and i appreciate that it holds up well enough that i do not have to give a dozen disclaimers before showing it to people, lol. “before the parade passes by” was a big mental health support song for me for a while, too <3
and, as far as ITW...oh, i want to like this show so much. i really, really do. there are parts of it that are very moving to me - cinderella’s arc, the baker and his father (“no more” is probably my favorite song in the whole show). but something about it has always struck me as a little more mean-spirited than i generally like my fractured faery tales to be. it’s kind of like my complaint about just ella, which i have shared here before - at a certain point, it feels like the characters are simply being punished for wanting happy endings. and i do not care for that.
also, justice for rapunzel :(
