Adam Carolla Gives Us the Inside Scoop on the Midcentury Marvel He’s Selling

Adam Carolla knows homes. Don’t laugh.

The funnyman, best known for his hit podcast “The Adam Carolla Show,” has been involved in construction for decades and has hands-on experience with every aspect of home building—from foundations to roofing and every 2-by-4 in between. He even hosted two home renovation shows!

His latest project is a midcentury modern home from 1963 in La Canada Flintridge, which we had the privilege of seeing in person. Carolla completely renovated the place and recently put it on the market for $3.4 million.

The neighborhood is full of stately residences and boasts an excellent public school system (Carolla and his wife, Lynette Paradise, have 12-year-old twins). He purchased the place for $2.5 million in August 2015, with the intention to completely rebuild it.

But upon closer inspection, Carolla found the home had excellent bones—and the layout simply needed “tweaking.”

So he rearranged the space of the one-story home, and added a saltwater spa and pool out back. Because, why not?

“Tweaking” undersells the work Carolla did. He carefully refinished nearly every inch of the place, while keeping period touches intact. It’s now an ideal family home and a showcase of midcentury modern design.

When we visited the home, we quickly learned he’s no demolition dilettante. If you’ve ever seen any of his construction-oriented cable shows, including TLC’s “The Adam Carolla Project” and Spike’s “To Catch a Contractor,” it’s easy to see he has contractor chops.

“I have imagination, and I know how to apply it,” says Carolla of his home building experience, which includes cabinetry and closet construction. “I can look at things and figure out how to make them work.”

The first thing you notice when you enter the front door is the clear view straight to the lush, secluded backyard thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows.

After peeling your eyes away from the view, the second thing you notice is the gleaming terrazzo flooring. It’s one of Carolla’s favorite features in the home even though it was hard to find the right product and almost more difficult to install.

“I travel a lot,” he explains. “And one of my favorite things about traveling is the terrazzo floors in airports. They’re bulletproof! They’re hard to put down and they’re expensive, but they’re worth it.”

Carolla chose a lovely shade of blue for the kitchen cabinets, which he had a hand in designing and constructing. The kitchen layout features two peninsulas as well as freestanding cabinets built around a double Sub-Zero refrigerator. The kitchen is adjacent the living room on one side and the den on the other.

Carolla says the spacious master suite, which includes an artfully illuminated closet and master bath, was his wife’s dream.

The 4,000-square-foot home has five bedrooms and 3.5 baths. But because of its sprawling single-story layout, the interior seems much larger.

So after putting in all that hard work, why is Carolla selling the house? Phil, the family’s black Labrador retriever, might be somewhat responsible. Carolla says he loves the neighborhood, and often takes Phil on long walks up and down the streets.

“There was this one house in the neighborhood that I really liked, and thought it would be great to live in if it ever came up for sale,” he recalls. “One day we were walking by it, and we saw a ‘For Sale’ sign.”

Carolla continues: “I’m a pretty impulsive guy. When I saw that sign, I asked myself, ‘Are you going to watch a new family move in, or are you going to jump on it?'”
