Sometimes tumblr recommends me post about how actually Cytherea went on a serial killing spree as an act of mercy and defiance against a cruel god and she was actually doing the morally correct thing and she cannot be blamed, et cetera... boring tbh
Every time that happens I'm like, she's an unrepentant mass murderer actually. I'm sorry we have read two completely different versions of these books but the one I read is way sexier. She's grieving and heartbroken and righteous in her anger but also she's an evil murdering bitch just so we're clear. She HAS AGENCY and she chose to FUCK SHIT UP. This is very hot of her.

Blue eyes… limpid… ???
Tumblr media
. . .
. . .
Hi my name is Cytherea “Dulcinea Septimus” Loveday and I have silky chestnut ringlets (that’s how I got my fake identity) that have been painstakingly curled to spread out over my shoulders and blue eyes that appear a limpid moonless purple and a lot of people tell me I look like the Duchess of Rhodes (AN: if u don’t know who she is get da hell out of here!).

meaning, at some point during gideon the ninth, harrow the ninth, nona the ninth, or one of the in-universe short stories, a character on page either alluded to or explicitly mentioned/feared/joked about the possibility, either present or future, of this pairing
sources:
ianthe + augustine: harrow, htn (smh harrow. allow a girlboss to try to manipulate a myriad-old lyctor with her feminine wiles in peace, please)
harrow + palamedes: gideon, htn (on one hand i hate it, on the other hand harrow would also hate it and would have a very funny reaction to hearing gideon say it so)
camilla + coronabeth: judith, as yet unsent; nona, ntn (i have questions if you voted for this but ok)
ianthe + silas: gideon, gtn (gideon was so funny for this)
pyrrha + juno: palamedes, ntn (if you voted for this i don't agree, but i understand)
g1deon + cytherea's corpse: harrow, htn (i mean, sure, maybe that was actually the case in practice, but it wasn't the Intention, so i think it counts)
palamedes + cytherea: gideon, ntn (lmao)
judith + camilla: coronabeth, as yet unsent (great work, jodybeth! masterful deflection on both sides)
ianthe + a bunch of skeletons in hell: babs - second hand, according to ianthe, htn (honestly she might enjoy this. it'd remind her of harrow at the very least)

I think Wake and Cytherea should've fucked nasty. They would've made each other worse and it would have been Cytherea toying with Gideon SO much worse. Do you see the vision

I WILL REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU KISSED ME—YOU APOLOGISED—YOU SAID, I AM SORRY, DESTROY ME AS I AM, BUT I WANT TO KISS YOU BEFORE I AM KILLED, AND I SAID TO YOU WHY, AND YOU SAID, BECAUSE I HAVE ONLY ONCE MET SOMEONE SO UTTERLY WILLING TO BURN FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVED IN, AND I LOVED HIM ON SIGHT, AND THE FIRST TIME I DIED I ASKED OF HIM WHAT I NOW ASK OF YOU

something i adore about the locked tomb (and Tamsyn’s writing) is that no one is just evil. everyone is the main character of their story and is internally justified in their actions.
g1deon is actively trying to murder our main character throughout all of book two and it is a PERFECTLY understandable choice for him. that is insane, you don’t see a ton of g1deon haters out there. again harrow is OUR GAL. we do not want to see her dead and yet. he understands Harrow to be a threat to the emperor, and therefore must die. of course.
cytherea murdered perfectly innocent children mercilessly and yet it seems a perfectly reasonable conclusion of her life. if she has to kill everyone in canaan house to get john back here and killed, so be it. it is merciful even, in comparison to a universe ruled by john in her eyes.
mercymorn calls ianthe and harrow infants and babies throughout Harrow. this is incredibly infantalising to the intellect and capacity of them both. it causes harrow to be utterly uncared for in a time when she is the most vulnerable she has ever been and ianthe to be utterly underestimated. and still, that is a perfectly reasonable response for mercymorn. she is ten thousand years old and the infants are 20ish. it’s nothing. they are utterly irrelevant to her material reality for ten. thousand. years. and they present very little impact to the job she has put herself to.
even john, as much as we love to hate him, is treated kindly by the narrative. no one can say he didn’t care. he didn’t nuke the world for fun (and didn’t do it alone). he lied about alecto and yet i do not doubt for a minute that he is internally justified. there must be something about perfect lyctorhood that he deemed reproachable enough to keep it a secret.

Cytherea makes me so !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like. listen. she is perfect: on a thematic, doyalist level, lyctorhood could never have erased the impact of her cancer because there is no cure that is independent of permanent disability. the silver bullet does not exist. that mythical, able bodied, "cured" version of the self not exist. your body has been irrevocably altered by disease & the devil deals you made to survive & that is your LIFE. the only way to wipe that slate clean is to die, and Cytherea wanted so badly to live. anyway.

The name Dulcinea comes from the Latin word dulce, meaning sweet, which is even more evident when people shorten it to to Dulcie, which is very appropriate for her.
However, it also reminds me of the poem 'Dulce et decorum est' - a poem about young people being persuaded to go to war only to either die or be horribly traumatised. The poem's name comes from the line 'The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est Pro patria mori.'
This fits with the theme of John Gaius lying to the Lyctors, their necromancers, and anyone who's ever fought for John in the Cohort: the lie that they're suffering or dying for a worthy cause. Which is exactly why Cytherea, posing as Dulcie, wanted to kill him.
