Synopsis

Diane est invitée au "Aspen Books Peaks," un festival littéraire se déroulant dans les montagnes. Elle décide d'y convier d'autres survivants. Poetry springs from an intuition of the insane violence of relativity, but it does not follow from this fact that it is in any sense ‘relativist’ or that it has relativist aspirations. It is not remotely relativist; it is a furious and bloody-minded response to the fact that what it values absolutely is even capable of being relativised. Everything and nothing become for the defensive poet like two differently coloured floodlights that can be switched on and off alternately. Everything is made to appear alternately under their illumination, to light up alternately under these two evaluative headings; the rhythm of the transformation sets the tempo for the protest it gives rise to, crashing away in the chest like a Bloomberg equities monitor on the blink during a stock market plummet. In Xu Lizhi’s ‘The Last Graveyard’, ‘The jig forces the skin to peel,/ And while it’s at it, plates on a layer of aluminum alloy’. In the first line, my suffering is everything. In the second, it is nothing. Everything I am becomes greater under the light in which I necessarily appear as nothing at all, as the most immediately replaceable among an infinity of more valuable production factors, put to work until my skin blisters and my body becomes unsuitable for the part operation that it was employed to perform. It becomes inexorably greater and not less under this light because under it the possibility that everything I have and am and everything that I hope for will be brutally taken from me is blown up and distorted until finally it comes to look like all of my horizons pressing in simultaneously on whatever it is that I am and unstoppably squashing it, densifying it, jamming it more and more relentlessly into just this moment of living expression cut off from the whole life in which we would never have to place on it demands that it could never hope to meet.

La campaña de un campeón excepcional

Con apenas 22 años -nació el 3 de junio del 2000- Alison Brendom Alves dos Santos ya se encuentra entre los atletas sudamericanos más grandes de la historia y acaba de concretar una hazaña notable: el título mundial de los 400 metros con vallas en el estadio Hayward Field, en Eugene, donde batió a todos los astros de la especialidad para llevar su récord sudamericano y récord de campeonato a 46s.29. La campaña que venía desarrollando Alison en su ciclo internacional del 2022 anticipaba que algo grande podía darse. Arrancó a fines de abril con los Drake Relays en Des Moines donde marcó 48s.41 y semanas después, en la apertura de la Diamond League en Doha, ganó con 47s.24. A fines de mayo logró el meeting Prefontaine Classic en esta misma pista de Eugene que ahora lo consagró con 47s23, colocándose al frente de las listas mundiales. Completó el ciclo premundialista con triunfos en pruebas tradicionales como los Bislett Games en Oslo (47s26 el 16 de junio) y dos semanas después, con 46.80 en Estocolmo, que avisaban de su excepcional estado de forma. Nacido el 3 de junio del 2000, tenía apenas diez meses cuando sufrió un grave accidente. Se le derramó el contenido de una sartén que manipulaba su abuela, sufrió quemaduras de tercer grado y pasó cuatro meses en el hospital de Barretos. Aún son visibles las cicatrices en su frente, rostro, pecho y brazo izquierdo, por lo que usa gorras para proteger su piel sensible al sol. Su primer deporte fue el judo, pero a los trece años comenzó a practicar atletismo en la Escuela Técnica Pedro Badran de su ciudad natal, São Joaquim da Barra. Y allí uno de sus profesores le aconsejó entrenar en el Instituto que lidera el ex velocista y medallista olímpico de relevos, Edson Luciano Ribeiro. “Cuando lo vi, mientras entrenaba en una pista de tierra, pensé que era muy bueno, por su altura, su coordinación y su velocidad”, dijo su primera entrenadora, Ana Claudia Fidelis. Rápidamente se ubicó entre las promesas brasileñas sobre 400 metros y 400 con vallas, y en el Mundial u18 de Nairobi (2017) logró el 5° lugar en esta prueba, además de llevarse una medalla de oro con el relevo mixto 4×400. En 2018 logró la medalla de bronce de los 400 con vallas en el Mundial u20 de Tampere con 49s78. Y también logró la prueba en el Sudamericano u23 en Cuenca con 50s.56, además de quedar segundo en los 400 llanos con su marca personal de 45s.97, escoltando a quien –un año más tarde- se proclamaría subcampeón mundial de la prueba, el colombiano Anthony Zambrano. La temporada 2019 resultó inolvidable para Alison, en su despedida de la categoría u20, donde su marca de 48s.28 queda por ahora como la tercera de todos los tiempos a nivel mundial, sólo precedida por los 48s.02 (récord junior) del estadounidense Danny Harris en 1984 y los 48.26 del triniteño Jehua Gordon en 2009. En aquella temporada del 2019, Alison corrió 16 veces por debajo de los 50 segundos, siete de ellas por debajo de los 49s. Y se constituyó en protagonista de todas las competencias relevantes. Durante su estadía preparatoria en California batió el récord sudamericano junior con 49s.84 (19 de abril en Azusa) y once días más tarde lo mejoró a 48s.84 al ganar el Gran Premio Brasil, en Braganca Paulista. “Nuestras metas al comenzar la temporada eran batir el récord sudamericano u20 y ganar el Panamericano de la categoría. Pero después de la victoria en el Gran Premio Brasil, todos los planes cambiaron, Alison terminó superando todas las expectativas, fue increíble”, contó su entrenador. Fue campeón sudamericano de mayores en Lima con 49s88 y el 11 de julio obtuvo la medalla dorada de los Juegos Mundiales Universitarios en Napoli, llevando el récord a 48s.57 y diez días más tarde se proclamó campeón panamericano u20 en Costa Rica con nuevo registro de 48s.49. De allí pasó a los Juegos Panamericanos, nuevamente en Lima y nuevamente con récord, 48s.45. Fue una carrera muy peleada junto al dominicano Juander Santos, cuya caída en la última valla le impidió cualquier discusión con Alison en los tramos finales. “Estoy muy feliz y le dedico la victoria a mi madre, Sueli, y a mi técnico, Felipe. Estoy viviendo un año maravilloso, no me imaginaba que correría sobre los 48 segundos. Cada competencia es una sorpresa para mí, estoy mejorando constantemente y eso me da confianza”, dijo Alison aquella tarde. Y dio otro salto de calidad al instalarse entre los finalistas del Campeonato Mundial en Doha, donde terminó 7° con 48s28, tras sus 48s.35 de las semifinales. También fue 7ª. su ubicación en la lista mundial absoluta de esa temporada. “Me sentí muy feliz de llegar a la final del Mundial con 19 años y compartir la pista con varios de los atletas más rápidos de la historia. Lo vi como una oportunidad para mejorar mi propio desempeño”, expresó. Su técnico Felipe Siqueira opina que “Alison tiene una facilidad impresionante para comprender el atletismo. Estamos cansados de ver atletas talentosos, pero que no tienen una comprensión total de la carrera, el compromiso y los cuidados adicionales. Alison lo tiene de sobra y eso es muy importante. A principios del 2020, Alison Brendom Alves dos Santos había retornado al Centro de Entrenamiento de Chula Vista, en California (EE.UU.) junto a su entrenador Felipe de Siqueira para iniciar un nuevo “Cámping CBAT” y un ciclo de preparación con vistas a los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio. Sin embargo, como al mundo entero, la pandemia le derrumbó todos los planes y aquella temporada quedó en blanco para Alison. No así sus objetivos , tras su formidable campaña junior, eran colocarse entre los principales especialistas del mundo en los 400 metros con vallas, ya en la categoría superior. El recorrido de Alison en el 2021 resultó asombroso. A principios de mayo realizó un formidable remate en el 4×400 mixto del World Relays en Chorzow (Polonia), corriendo su parcial por debajo de los 45 segundos y remontando desde el quinto hasta el segundo puesto, que le valió la medalla de plata a Brasil. Después, ya concentrado en los 400 vallas, inició su seguidilla de récords sudamericanos -seis consecutivos- hasta desembocar en los 46s.72 de los Juegos Olímpicos de Tokio que, inclusive, estaban por debajo del wr que Kevin Young ostentaba hasta hace pocas semanas. La carrera de los 400 vallas en Tokio fue la más grande de la historia. Allí el noruego Karsten Warholm barrió con su propio récord del mundo –fijado pocas semanas antes, el 1° de julio en Oslo- al marcar 45s.94, seguido por el estadounidense Rai Benjamin con 46s.17. Y Alison en el tercer puesto llevó el tope sudamericano a 46s.72, que estaban inclusive por debajo del récord mundial que Kevin Young había ostentado hasta hacía pocas semana antes (46.78 en Barcelona 92). Fue la primera medalla en la historia para un vallista sudamericano en los Juegos Olímpicos. If there is indeed a poetics of riot — opposed to what Sean called “police realism” — it is to be found in his prose and poetry, and exemplified in his often chilling public performances.

Sean continues to be one of the most important guides for imagining avenues beyond our current cultural-political impasses. He taught us how to read. He introduced us to everything. He introduced us to Milton and Baudelaire and Brecht and Blake and Michel and Trakl and Pasolini and Rimbaud and Cesaire and Gogou and Baraka and di Prima and Wieners and Berber, and he rewrote every single one of them and made us want to rewrite every single one of them too, on laptops and typewriters and notepads and across the insides of government offices and on the surfaces of our bodies. He introduced us to collage and cut-up and rhythm & blues and geometry and harmony and rock ’n’ roll dance moves and Fall lyrics and Class War and revolutionary letters and the cosmology of Louis-Auguste Blanqui. He taught us about birdsong and dawn and Thatcher and ACAB and the esoteric properties of numbers. He wrote a poetry of irrefutable moral truth and performed it as if he had just listened to everything that history had to say and this was what he fucking thought of it, yeh; and history never had any goddamn answer; and you can hear his cadences and his attack and his velocity mutated and transformed in every single one of us, and he will live on forever in our muscle memories and our nervous systems as well as our thoughts, and he taught us most of what we know about those things as well.
