Make Me Smile: Former Chicago Drummer Danny Seraphine Turns LXXV
Danny Seraphine has been out of Chicago - 33 years - for a decade longer than he was with the band he co-founded in 1967.
But the drummer, born Aug. 28, 1948, continues making music and today celebrates birthday No. 75, or LXXV in Chicago parlance.
Just as Terry Kath was under-recognized as a guitarist because of the band he played in, Seraphine is under-appreciated as a drummer because of the band he played in. People who heard Chicago only on the radio heard competent guitar and drum playing but were mostly drawn to the horns and vocals.
But the folks who had - and played straight through - the band’s first XI (11 in Arabic) albums knew about Seraphine’s prowess behind the kit. Like the band itself, he blended a jazz sensibility with a rock ‘n’ roll drive.
Seraphine didn’t showboat; he simply rode his “Motorboat to Mars” and left drum fans knowing what many others did not - this guy was, and remains, a monster player.
Seraphine’s 1990 firing remains one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most bone-headed moves. Chicago hasn’t swung the same since the group inexplicably severed ties with its founding sticksman.
These albums in the vein of Supernatural work. I mean, they get their jobs done, though the musicians who make them should be wary of them. Ask Chicago about what happens afterwards. Yes, they went through their Supernatural phase from Chicago 16 to the end of the 80's. Still, we shouldn't hold the platters from the period against them, they merely wished to be relevant again. Thus, their success with Chicago 16 caused them to rethink their sonic approach and they began to chase the success. However, I am not sure what else they could've done then, they were a group for the 60's and the 70's, the 80's had no use for them, unless they went crazily current. Of course, their peers had the same dilemmas, i.e. they gained their biggest sales with the discs few admire.
Danny Seraphine (born August 28, 1948) He is best known for being the original #drummer and founding member of the #rock #group Chicago, a tenure which lasted from February 1967 to May 1990.
Seraphine co-wrote several songs for the band: “Lowdown” (a Top 40 hit for the band), “Little One,” “Take Me Back to Chicago,” “Show Me the Way,” “Birthday Boy” and “Street Player.” His writing partner was often David “Hawk” Wolinski, the keyboardist for Chaka Khan and Rufus. His song “Street Player” was sampled by The Bucketheads for the dance hit “The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall into My Mind)”, and later by rapper Pitbull for the hit “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” from the album “Rebelution”. The song samples “75, Brazil Street” by Nicola Fasano versus Pat Rich, which itself samples “Street Player”. “I Know You Want Me” has also been featured in Dance Central, the dancing game based on Xbox Kinect, Dance Dance Revolution X2 for PlayStation 2, and SingStar Dance, the dancing game based on PlayStation Move.
In 1974, during the peak of the band’s career, Seraphine invested in and was a moving force in the establishment of B'Ginnings, a music venue with capacity of almost 1,000, in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.
Seraphine left Chicago in 1990, following the recording of Chicago 19. After some session drummers, this vacancy was filled permanently by veteran drummer, Tris Imboden, in time for Twenty 1.
Noah felt amazing now that he was in his human realm body. As much as he loved his female form while in Faerie, he much preferred the lithe frame of his male form. Though he did keep the female anatomy inside and down below, that he was rather fond of. To those who didn't know who he was, he was Noah Park Adoptive brother of Danny, but to those who did he was the former Queen of the Fae. Ever since he stepped down and coronation Seraphine and her husband as his replacements, he only wanted to get his life started with his soulmates and children. He decided not to tell them when he was coming, wanting to surprise the two, and made his way to their home. Knocking on the door he waited for one of them to open it. "Surprise, my darling, I'm home." He beams.
So, I love playlists. They are so important to me. The playlist for Pride & Justice is 65 songs long (and counting), and the individual character playlists are 32 songs (and counting) each. That's a bit too extremely long to be a soundtrack, so I'll list my favorites here and leave the full playlists at the end of the post so you can listen to them in their full glory.
