I saw my first snake of the season today! A little Dekays brown snake. These little guys eat mostly insects, snails, and slugs. 🥰 Can't wait to share more snakes from the nature preserve this year.

Taken 2022 6th August, this was a DeKay's brown snake (Storeria dekayi) juvenile I originally found on the sidewalk. They occur from the eastern half of North America to Honduras hiding under cover such as logs or leaf litter, but can sometimes be found in the open at night. They feed exlusively on soft-bodied invertebrates such as earthworms or slugs. As soon as they reach sexual maturity after 2-3 years, they will mate once they wake up from brumation in spring. After which, the females will give live birth to 3-41 young by late summer. Happy Monday, friends. 🍂 I helped a new friend find his way off the roadway and into the grass because wee snakes should not be trying to cross the road by themselves. I come from a line of women who are utterly batshit terrified of snakes, so every time I encounter one on a hike I feel an instant rush of irrational fear, which I hate. I love snakes (and their symbolism) so to rewire this generational response, I’ve learned to choose to be curious instead of scared: I actually remind myself right then and there that curiosity is the cure. I don’t freak out over snakes anymore, there is just too much about them that is fascinating and beautiful. I do still freak out over centipedes tho.
